Zomato not an IPO review | CA Rachana Ranade - YouTube
Channel: CA Rachana Phadke Ranade
[49]
Hey folks, CA Rachana Ranade here and I welcome聽
you all to a brand new video, which is about聽聽
[54]
understanding the business model of Zomato. Now聽
coming back to our original discussion, where聽聽
[59]
did the name come from? When these people who are聽
the founders of the company, we are going to talk聽聽
[64]
about them in the coming part, but these founders聽
when they sat down together and when they started聽聽
[69]
thinking that what should be the brand name, they聽
said that ''it should be something which is short,聽聽
[74]
which is easy to remember and which makes people聽
think about food''. So while they were doing the聽聽
[79]
brainstorming, there was a lot of energy involved,聽
energy is zing and something about food is聽聽
[85]
tomato. So many people call it as Zomato聽
including me but some people call it as聽聽
[90]
Zomato. Wait wait wait wait, really, is this not聽
an IPO review? answer is yes. You might be like,聽聽
[99]
entire world is talking about Zomato IPO, why are聽
you not talking about it? Answer is very simple,聽聽
[105]
I personally believe that many of you might be聽
feeling that Zomato is equal to a food delivery聽聽
[110]
business, answer is not true, because Zomato has聽
two major business verticals, which are these? One聽聽
[117]
is a b to b business vertical and one is b to c,聽
inside b to b also, there are lot of sub types and聽聽
[124]
same case applies for a b to c vertical as well.聽
So what is the main thought process of this video,聽聽
[130]
thought process of this video is first understand聽
the various business verticals nicely, once you聽聽
[136]
grasp them properly over this weekend, on Monday,聽
what am I going to do ,I am going to come live聽聽
[142]
at 9 00 p.m on the same YouTube channel聽
wherein, I will be talking about financials,聽聽
[146]
I will be talking about valuation and many聽
many more other interesting facts about Zomato,聽聽
[152]
so first over this weekend watch this video聽
and then see you on Monday 9 P.M. live聽聽
[157]
on this channel. Well way back in 2008, Mr.聽
Dipinder Goel and Mr. Pankaj Chaddah were working聽聽
[165]
at Bain and Company. When they started working聽
there, they found that many of their colleagues聽聽
[171]
especially during lunch time were standing聽
in long queues to order for their food,聽聽
[176]
that is when an idea came in their mind and聽
that is what typical IITans do with an idea,聽聽
[181]
they start a startup. This thought of putting all聽
the menu cards of all the restaurants nearby on an聽聽
[188]
intranet website which they called it as聽
foodiebay.com, but eventually they saw聽聽
[193]
that there was a lot of surge in the traffic聽
on their intranet website as well and that's聽聽
[198]
where they decided to take it as a proper public聽
website. And then, the journey began wherein they聽聽
[204]
expanded to many restaurants in Delhi, then聽
Kolkata, then Mumbai and then to Bengaluru.聽聽
[212]
Let's quickly understand the timeline of Zomato.聽
In 2008, they launched foodie bay about which聽聽
[217]
I just talked about a minute ago, in 2010 they聽
went PAN India and they got their first funding聽聽
[224]
of 1 million us dollars from info edge India,聽
by the way that's a listed company. In 2012,聽聽
[230]
Zomato was renamed as Zomato Media Private Limited聽
and they also launched their mobile application.聽聽
[235]
In 2012, they expanded their operations to聽
Dubai Sri Lanka, United Kingdom, Philippines,聽聽
[242]
South Africa, Turkey, Brazil, Indonesia and聽
New Zealand. In April 2020 they renamed the聽聽
[248]
company to Zomato Private Limited, in April 2021聽
they renamed again the company to Zomato limited聽聽
[255]
and currently the company has its presence in 24聽
countries and 10 000 plus cities across the globe.
[265]
Now let's shift our focus to the core聽
business model of Zomato wherein,聽聽
[269]
we'll try and understand their key聽
activities. So primarily they have聽聽
[272]
two business activities one is b2c and the聽
other one is b2b. When I talk about b2c,聽聽
[278]
all these business activities come up under聽
this segment and if I talk about b2b, all聽聽
[283]
these different business activities come up under聽
the b2b segment. Now what we are going to do, we聽聽
[288]
are going to try and understand in short about all聽
these activities in the coming part of the video.
[295]
So now let's understand their b2c business model聽
wherein, the first point that we are going to聽聽
[299]
talk is about their food delivery service. You聽
might have wondered that many a times on Zomato,聽聽
[304]
they offer 30 to 40 percent discount, how聽
on earth can they really bear this big cost?聽聽
[310]
So just have a look at this table, the total 30 to聽
40 percent I am going to divide it into two parts聽聽
[315]
15 to 20 percent, another 15 to 20 percent.聽
The first 15 to 20 percent is nothing聽聽
[320]
but Zomato says that whatever is the cost in the聽
menu card they'll charge an additional 15 to 20聽聽
[327]
over and above that and that will be there on聽
the Zomato's menu card. So just to give you聽聽
[331]
an example let's say 100 rupees is the menu card聽
cost in the hotel, that 100 rupees dish on Zomato聽聽
[338]
will be listed at 120 and then tomato people will聽
say we are giving you 10 percent discount okay,聽聽
[343]
so who is bearing the discount? Is it Zomato? No,聽
it's you and me who is bearing the discount number聽聽
[347]
one okay. Right hand side if you check out, it is聽
that 15 to 20 percent the hotel owner is ready to聽聽
[354]
bear that much cost, how? See if a person eats聽
at home, there are certain overhead costs which聽聽
[361]
are reduced for the hotel, like what? Overhead聽
cost like that table is free, overhead cost like聽聽
[366]
no extra waiter needs to be there, overhead costs聽
like less utensils to be cleared, right, so hotel聽聽
[372]
owner very happily is ready to give additional聽
15 to 20 discount. So in short the first 15 to聽聽
[378]
20 percent was born by people like you and me and聽
the second 15 to 20 percent was born by the hotel,聽聽
[384]
so nowhere in picture, Zomato is going to bear聽
the brunt of this big discount okay, but of course聽聽
[389]
just to give you a small note here that there聽
are certain restaurants like Wadeshwar and Pune,聽聽
[394]
where the menu card rate and Zomato menu card rate聽
it's the same okay. So with that let's move on,聽聽
[401]
why, because the first one which I discussed which聽
was about the food delivery service, that forms a聽聽
[406]
very minor part of their revenue okay. Second one聽
is subscription. What is subscription? They have聽聽
[411]
nice tools amazing analytical tools like Zomato聽
order and Zomato book. Now through this Zomato聽聽
[417]
book, analytical tool I am sure everyone many聽
of you might have used it, we can book tables in聽聽
[422]
in advance right, a normal feature, next one is聽
Zomato loyalty services, now what is this? I am聽聽
[428]
sure again you might have heard about Zomato pro聽
and piggy bank wherein you will be able to enjoy聽聽
[433]
complementary food, drink something like one聽
plus one on a food or two plus two on a drinks.聽聽
[440]
So it's always good to get all these freebies聽
right, plus you also get a priority delivery, as聽聽
[445]
well as money back guarantee schemes. The next one聽
is Zomato other features wherein, they will say聽聽
[452]
you get an on-time delivery or you get the free聽
delivery. So many times what Zomato does is that,聽聽
[459]
you have to pay 10 rupees extra okay, why 10聽
rupees extra, if the food doesn't come to your聽聽
[464]
home in time then you will get the food delivery聽
free of cost okay, but then they know that they聽聽
[469]
are going to deliver in time, so that 10 rupees,聽
10 rupees, 10 rupees is going to be their income聽聽
[475]
right. So I hope you have understood what聽
are the different services under b2c.
[482]
So let's start with the b2b segment and the very聽
first segment which forms the major source of聽聽
[488]
income for Zomato is advertising revenue. Now聽
many times while surfing through their app,聽聽
[494]
you might have wondered that why a specific comes聽
right on the top, is it because it has a higher聽聽
[499]
demand always, answer is no. Possibility is聽
that they have a higher demand but there is聽聽
[504]
another possibility that, that restaurant聽
might have paid certain charges to Zomato聽聽
[508]
so that their name appears on the top. You聽
might have heard a similar analogy with just聽聽
[513]
dial as well okay. So, that's how the advertising聽
charges work for them, now you might be wondering,聽聽
[517]
why restaurants would be willing to pay them聽
these advertising charges? Many times restaurants聽聽
[523]
get to know through their analytics that a lot of聽
their revenue is being generated through Zomato聽聽
[527]
only, so then you know their dependency on Zomato聽
increases, so they want that more and more order聽聽
[532]
should come from Zomato and their name should go聽
on keeping in the first two three names right,聽聽
[537]
that's why they willingly pay these聽
advertisement charges to Zomato聽聽
[541]
and that might be one of the reasons why聽
this is their number one revenue segment.聽聽
[545]
The second one is sustainability, now聽
what is? This this is something new,聽聽
[550]
might be new for many of you, they have started a聽
new initiative which is tagged as hyper pure, now聽聽
[556]
what is this hyper pure? In simple words, they're聽
acting as a middleman okay, what middlemen, they聽聽
[561]
help the farmers to grow organic crops okay聽
and they supply these organic crops to whom,聽聽
[568]
to the restaurants okay. Now those restaurants聽
were actually taking such products from Zomato,聽聽
[575]
organic products these restaurants will have聽
a separate tag near their name which will be聽聽
[581]
called as the hyper pure inside tag okay .So聽
those customers who are crazy for organic food,聽聽
[588]
so we want to eat only pure food these category of聽
customers right, so they will just try and ensure聽聽
[593]
that, Oh! hyper pure inside tag, now I will go聽
to this restaurant okay so, automatically can I聽聽
[598]
say these restaurants might have a separate niche聽
segment of customers automatically built in for聽聽
[604]
them right. So that was their second b2b service.聽
Third one is business consultancy service, this is聽聽
[609]
again an amazing service given by Zomato. Zomato聽
has such a huge database, they have so many,聽聽
[616]
this is like a data mine that they have, they know聽
which people, from which area, prefer what food,聽聽
[624]
at what time, in which price range. So now you聽
can imagine, if they have all these data points聽聽
[631]
it will be so simple for them to analyze this聽
and give this service as a business consultancy聽聽
[638]
to another hotel, has this ever happened, yes,聽
which which is the example, Jubilant Food Works.聽聽
[645]
I am sure many of you might be knowing聽
Jubilant Food Works is domino's pizza right.聽聽
[648]
When they wanted to venture into something new,聽
they had taken other consultant services as well聽聽
[654]
but they had also approached Zomato right, they聽
asked Zomato that which was the food item which聽聽
[660]
was being ordered highest in north Delhi and south聽
Delhi, then they took month on month analytics聽聽
[666]
and they found that biryani was the item which聽
was being ordered as the highest food item through聽聽
[671]
Zomato and other apps right, they also tried to聽
analyze what was the price range with which the聽聽
[677]
customers were comfortable with, taking all these聽
data in hand, Jubilant Food Works announced their聽聽
[682]
new brand which is eight dumb which sells biryani,聽
that is an example of business consultancy聽聽
[687]
services. The fourth one is Zomato Cloud聽
Kitchen. Now I am sure you might have heard about聽聽
[692]
Rebel Foods, so what is this concept of cloud聽
kitchen, let me just tell you. It's as good as,聽聽
[698]
there is one single kitchen and there are two or聽
three families which are using the same kitchen,聽聽
[703]
now instead of two or three families, two or聽
three food brands are using the same kitchen,聽聽
[709]
then where do the customers sit? at their聽
own home. There is no overhead cost okay,聽聽
[713]
so they'll just prepare in the kitchen, food聽
delivery boys will come they'll take it and go聽聽
[717]
away. Now, if I am talking a bit again about the聽
rebel foods example, they have various brands like聽聽
[723]
Faso's, Beherouz Biryani, Oven Story, Lunchbox聽
and few more right. So this is again one of the聽聽
[731]
upcoming areas which is Zomato cloud kitchen.聽
Zomato claims, that return on investment for聽聽
[738]
this specific segment is more than approximately聽
80 percent and they have broken even in less than聽聽
[745]
a year in this segment and so far they have聽
completed more than 180 affiliate kitchens,聽聽
[751]
right. So moving on to the next one, the next one聽
is Zomato Whitelabel services, now what is this,聽聽
[756]
so like a customer says the restaurant says聽
I don't want to get myself listed on Zomato,聽聽
[761]
instead of that Zomato please make a separate app聽
for me, Zomato says that our basic mold is ready,聽聽
[768]
okay it's ready, so we just have to copy paste聽
this as good as make minor modifications, give it聽聽
[773]
that is nothing but white labeling. This service聽
is also given by Zomato to other restaurants聽聽
[777]
and the last one is Event Segment and what is聽
this? They have recently introduced something聽聽
[783]
which is known as Zoma land and they conduct聽
live events, typically like a new year's event,聽聽
[788]
like Christmas event wherein, they'll also promote聽
their restaurants which are listed on their聽聽
[793]
app. So I hope, all in all you have understood聽
what are the different services which are rendered聽聽
[797]
by them in the b2b segment. Well it's just that聽
it doesn't have to be any great or mind-blowing聽聽
[806]
business idea to start your own business or have a聽
startup. It's just about observing what's going on聽聽
[811]
in our surrounding, any small incident, any small聽
problem, if it is identified and tackled in the聽聽
[817]
most clever manner, can become a good business聽
idea like Zomato. It's also said that ideas are聽聽
[824]
no one's monopoly, it's all about execution. So聽
I hope you have loved today's video, if you have,聽聽
[829]
just share it with your friends till聽
then take care, Jai Hind and bye bye.
