Accountant Explains 2020 W4 - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[1]
welcome to the February 21st 2020
[8]
payroll solutions community live Q&A
[13]
today we are going to be talking about
[16]
the new federal w-4 and what that means
[20]
for your employees and possibly for
[23]
yourself and I'm going to share my
[28]
screen here so that we can see the w-4
[34]
while we're talking about it I am just
[40]
things are always on the way when you do
[43]
a zoom screen share so I just moving
[45]
things out of the way all right
[48]
so the most important parts about this
[50]
w-4 is step one where you fill in your
[55]
name your social security number your
[57]
address and your filing status and I
[61]
think these are pretty self-explanatory
[63]
the biggest change though is you used to
[67]
have single married
[72]
a head of household or and then you had
[77]
married but withhold at the higher
[80]
single rate so now they've combined the
[83]
single and married filing separately
[85]
we've got married filing jointly or
[88]
qualified widower and had a household
[92]
which is new what you can only file that
[94]
if you are a head of a household meaning
[99]
you are supplying 50% or more of the
[105]
year living expenses for a qualifying
[110]
individual and the other important
[114]
section of the new w-4 is step 5
[119]
where you sign it and date it and as
[122]
always the employers only section where
[125]
you put in the employers name address
[128]
and data first employment and the
[133]
employers ein is still pretty optional
[136]
and then steps 2 or 3 or 4 you'll fill
[141]
out only if they apply to you
[144]
so basically step 2 applies to you if
[149]
you work multiple jobs or if you're
[152]
married and your spouse works step 3 is
[157]
where you claim the dependents so if
[160]
your income is $200,000 or less if
[164]
you're single or four hundred thousand
[167]
or less if you're married filing jointly
[169]
you can you put two thousand dollars in
[173]
here for all the number of children that
[175]
you have under the age of seventeen and
[181]
then you multiply the number of
[184]
dependents by five hundred and get the
[186]
total that you put in line three
[188]
so step four you figure out your income
[193]
your other income but not from a job the
[196]
deductions or if you want to have extra
[199]
withholding then you can put that number
[203]
in 4c and there are a lot of
[207]
instructions that go along with this I'm
[211]
just skipping over
[212]
I just abbreviated these this page of
[215]
instructions and this is your worksheet
[218]
for completing step two if you have
[221]
multiple jobs and I'm not going to read
[226]
every line here but just know that if
[229]
you have two jobs you put or three jobs
[233]
or more jobs you you fill all this out
[237]
and it includes these fun tax tables
[240]
which can be a little bit difficult to
[244]
read but basically if this is your this
[249]
column is for your annual taxable wages
[251]
and salary and if you have another so
[257]
this is for job one this is for job two
[260]
and let's say that you have your higher
[263]
paying job is 60,000 and your lesser
[266]
paying job is sixty thousand six
[270]
thousand five hundred and seventy
[272]
dollars would be your tax liability if
[275]
you are married filing joint and the tax
[278]
tables are very similar they just have
[281]
different numbers in them so say you're
[285]
single your tax liability with the same
[289]
60,000 in sixty thousand jobs would be
[293]
7890 had a household with the same
[297]
60,000 and sixty thousand
[301]
it would be
[305]
10200 so don't that's the tax table but
[313]
and people are always going to their HR
[317]
department or payroll processing company
[320]
to say how do I feel there so what do I
[323]
need to put and unfortunately the only
[328]
qualified person that can answer this
[330]
question for you is your tax preparer so
[334]
what I've been doing for payroll
[338]
solutions plus when clients come to us
[341]
and ask how their employees should fill
[343]
this out I always give them one to fill
[348]
out and just if they if they need help
[351]
they because the beautiful thing with
[354]
w-4 is that you can still fill out as
[356]
many as you need to during the year so
[360]
just to get them on payroll I have them
[363]
fill out step one and step five and I
[367]
send them another one that is blank that
[370]
they can take to their tax preparer and
[372]
their tax preparer can help them fill
[375]
out steps two three and four because
[378]
they're the only ones that know the full
[382]
tax liability of the full tax
[385]
responsibility for
[388]
any of your employees or poor you even
[393]
yourself if you're in Oscorp
[395]
and you want to know what how to fill
[397]
this stuff out another place that people
[399]
can go look to figure out how what their
[403]
tax liability is supposed to be is
[407]
irs.gov in slash individualist slash tax
[412]
withholding estimator and I am going to
[415]
throw this link in
[419]
the Facebook
[423]
live and I am not seeing it so I will
[427]
throw this on as soon as I get done
[433]
oh here we go it was just on my other
[437]
screen alright so there's the link to
[442]
the tax withholding estimator so you
[448]
basically gather up all of your tax
[453]
information like your pay stubs your so
[458]
fill out your filing the status so I
[461]
would be married filing jointly can
[464]
someone else claim me as a dependent on
[466]
their tax return
[467]
no do I plan to claim dependents on my
[472]
tax return and since my all of our kids
[476]
are old enough and they're out of the
[477]
house I will say no do you or will you
[482]
or your spouse hold a job this year with
[485]
paychecks which federal income tax is
[488]
regularly withheld and my husband still
[491]
has a full-time job so we will say yes
[494]
how many jobs do you expect to hold this
[498]
year so me I expect to hold zero jobs
[503]
because I had my own business and how
[507]
many dramas is your spouse expect to
[509]
hold this year which will be one will we
[512]
be receiving a pension no and depending
[517]
on
[517]
[Music]
[519]
how you answer the questions it brings
[523]
up different options so if you have
[526]
dependents you can pick how many
[527]
dependents you have so let's just say
[529]
you've got four kids you see you have
[532]
four dependents and then if it pops up
[537]
and the beautiful thing is you can play
[540]
with different scenarios and you're not
[542]
going to lose the information that
[544]
you've already put in I'm I'm not gonna
[547]
completely fill all of this out but oh I
[550]
guess we're are in step five of five
[553]
will receive income from self-employment
[560]
let's see all right so we've got we're
[567]
on the next part where we're putting in
[569]
our sources of income which would be in
[573]
my case my spouse's job and my
[577]
self-employment and know let's just
[581]
throw some numbers in here every two
[585]
weeks let's say that today is payday I
[590]
really don't know when he gets paid but
[593]
we'll go with today and the total wages
[597]
that they expect to receive this year
[602]
let's just we've been using 60,000 so
[606]
let's just throw in 60,000 even though
[608]
that is not accurate so we have not
[614]
missed the beginning of the year so no
[617]
bonuses but let's just say there's a
[619]
2,000 dollar bonus at Christmas time and
[624]
that the employers gonna withhold
[626]
appropriate taxes from bonuses
[631]
all right which this year the
[635]
appropriate bonus tax withheld is 22%
[638]
federal withholding
[642]
Oh see and now I'm not gonna be able to
[644]
answer this because I don't know what
[649]
these answers are but let's just say
[654]
1500 has been withheld so far and the
[658]
amount on the last check let's see
[664]
just to make the math simple
[668]
let's say 1200 and the amount withheld
[673]
on the last check was 300 because we're
[675]
about 4 paychecks into the year so far
[679]
and we'll just say no no self-employment
[686]
income let's just say 80,000 because
[691]
we're making up numbers
[695]
and I have not paid in any federal
[697]
income tax let's just go to the next
[703]
step we'll do the standard deduction and
[706]
you'll obviously fill this in with you
[711]
and well we're not doing ok so according
[719]
to this at the the way that things are
[721]
going right now the expected under
[725]
payment is thirteen thousand nine
[728]
hundred and thirteen so this is a really
[731]
good way to you know and obviously the
[734]
these are all estimated numbers but
[738]
it'll give you a really good is a good
[742]
place to start and figure out how you're
[745]
gonna fill out your w-4 especially if
[749]
you if you're self-employed and your
[753]
spouse isn't then you can you know in
[757]
this case we would want to have at least
[759]
another that was in dollars of federal
[762]
income tax withheld
[768]
from from my spouse's paycheck every
[773]
month so that would equate to about four
[776]
hundred and seventy five dollars per
[778]
paycheck so let's see I am going to stop
[785]
sharing my screen now and I'm gonna take
[787]
a peek at the Facebook and see if
[793]
anybody has any questions on what we
[797]
what I've just shown and I am not seeing
[801]
any yet but if you are watching this on
[805]
the replay please make sure you if you
[810]
have questions please make sure you put
[811]
those in
[815]
in the comment section below and thank
[817]
you all for watching
