CPA Exam: How to Find CPA Study Time While Working Full Time - YouTube
Channel: SuperfastCPA
[0]
If you feel like you can't find the time to study
[1]
consistently or you struggle sticking with
[4]
your daily study routine, in this video, I'm going to
[7]
give you two simple steps to solve that for good.
[10]
Let's start with a quote from the book Atomic Habits,
[13]
that was written by James Clear.
[15]
He says, "You do not rise to the level of your goals,
[18]
you fall to the level of your systems." So,
[21]
of course, anyone who starts the CPA exam process,
[24]
their goal is to pass the CPA exams.
[27]
But we also know from the published pass rates
[30]
that only about 50 percent of candidates pass
[33]
their exams and some large
[36]
percentage of all CPA candidates eventually give up and
[39]
never finish their CPA at all.
[41]
Now, everyone knows that you're supposed to stay
[43]
consistent, you're supposed to study every day.
[45]
So where does this always go wrong?
[47]
And typically what you'll hear is someone that says,
[51]
"life gets in the way"...
[52]
And life does get in the way.
[54]
People are busy. If you're working full time, it's
[57]
incredibly hard to find four to five
[60]
hours a day to sit down and study.
[62]
Now, if your life becomes: you wake up, you
[65]
go to work, then you study, then you go
[67]
to sleep, and then you do it over and over again, for
[70]
months, life quickly becomes pretty
[73]
miserable. In fact, going back to the book
[76]
Atomic Habits, James Clear talks about
[79]
how, if achieving your goals
[82]
requires huge amounts of willpower
[85]
that goes against your natural tendencies
[88]
and you're always fighting yourself to try and accomplish
[91]
the steps that lead to your goals, you will
[93]
not follow through.
[95]
So the question is, how do you make your daily study
[98]
routine doable?
[100]
How do you fit your study routine into your normal
[103]
daily life so that you don't have to fight yourself
[106]
every day to make time for it?
[108]
So let's go back to that quote one more time.
[110]
You do not rise to the level of your goals.
[112]
You fall to the level of your systems.
[115]
Or we could say you fall to the level of your
[118]
daily routine. OK, so how do we do this?
[121]
So the easiest way to make your daily study sessions
[124]
easier to accomplish, make them easier
[127]
to fit into your actual daily routine, is
[130]
to make them shorter.
[132]
So what we teach our clients to do is to have a two hour
[135]
main study session and on workdays, that's
[139]
all you do with your review course.
[140]
So you do a two hour study session, you're following
[144]
our study framework and you do it in the morning
[147]
so that your biggest task, your
[150]
biggest mental hurdle, it's done, out of the way, you
[153]
don't have to think about it and dread it all day long.
[155]
For example, the main study strategy we teach our clients
[159]
for moving through new lessons we call "planting
[162]
the seeds". This is where you learn how to quickly
[164]
identify the most tested parts of any
[167]
lesson and you learn it backwards,
[170]
which means learning it in the same context that you'll
[173]
actually see it on test day.
[175]
And this can be done with any review course, once you
[178]
know how to do it. When you know how to study like this,
[180]
you really can get more done in two hours
[183]
than somebody studying four to five hours the normal
[186]
way. Now, if you want more info on how to actually do
[189]
this and our other strategies, then we have
[191]
a free "Strategic CPA Studying"
[194]
workshop that you can attend.
[196]
It's a webinar.
[198]
It's only at certain times, there should be a link below
[201]
this video or a button below this video you can click on
[203]
to sign up for one of those upcoming sessions.
[206]
So at the beginning, I said I'd give you two ways to do
[208]
this. That was the first way: a two hour main study
[211]
session. You lock it in in the morning, you make it a
[214]
morning ritual. So it is done, you do it when your brain
[217]
is fresh. You're not trying to study for four hours
[220]
after work, when your brain is already fried and you
[223]
can't even focus on the video lecture.
[225]
It just works so much better in every way to
[228]
do it in the morning. So that's step number one.
[230]
Step number two is then throughout the rest of your
[233]
day, you continue to study from your
[236]
phone using study supplements.
[238]
Now we all get these screentime reports,
[241]
which are shocking, to say the least.
[244]
You know, you think, "how did I find three hours a day
[247]
to goof around on my phone?" So what I'm talking about is
[250]
simply taking advantage of all that time,
[253]
even the busiest people, all of us.
[255]
We have these smartphones we carry around and we look at
[258]
them up to a hundred times an hour.
[261]
So even taking a portion of those little
[264]
"mini sessions" on your phone, you replace all your
[267]
time-waster time on TikTok, Instagram,
[270]
Reddit, whatever your favorite time waster apps are,
[273]
you replace that with reading review notes,
[276]
taking quizzes. Whenever you're in your car, you listen
[279]
to audio notes, when you're preparing meals, when you're
[282]
just lounging around the house, you could be
[285]
listening to audio notes in the background.
[287]
Now, I don't just recommend this because we happen
[290]
to sell the exact study supplements I am talking
[293]
about. So study after study like this one
[297]
proves that when you're trying to learn a new topic
[300]
or a new subject, whatever it is, when you study
[303]
in small chunks multiple times a day, you're
[306]
recalling the information you're trying to learn
[310]
multiple times a day, it is dramatically more effective
[313]
for your long term learning and your long term retention
[316]
than one longer study period done
[319]
just once a day.
[328]
Now, for our purposes, it just so happens that it's
[330]
also a lot easier to do it this way,
[333]
I think you would agree that two hours a day
[337]
is twice as easy as trying to sit down
[340]
for four or five hours a day, and then you
[343]
make up the rest of the time by doing the things you're
[346]
already doing. You're already driving your car places.
[348]
You're already looking at your phone multiple hours a
[351]
day. You simply fit in the rest of your study time
[354]
in all those little five to ten minute chunks.
[357]
The big advantage is, you have put in four
[360]
to five hours by the time you're done with work for the
[362]
day and you take the evenings off, you
[365]
get to still do the things that you would normally do, so
[368]
that you don't go crazy through this process.
[370]
That alone makes this process much more doable.
[373]
It makes it much more motivating.
[375]
But most of all, it just makes it much more likely that
[378]
you will actually stick to it.
[380]
So to recap, you do the two hour main study session
[384]
with your current review course.
[385]
It doesn't matter what review course you're currently
[387]
using. You do two hours in the morning.
[389]
If you want more info on how we teach our clients
[392]
to study, you can sign up for one of those free strategic
[395]
study workshops.
[397]
There should be a link below the video or a button below
[399]
the video. So you do the two hours in the morning with
[402]
your review course. Then you take study supplements
[405]
and you keep studying throughout the rest of your day.
[407]
This way, by the time you're done with work, you've put
[409]
in four to five hours, maybe even more, of quality
[413]
study time so that you can take the evenings off, so
[416]
that you don't go crazy through this process.
