Laid off United pilot says airline 'wanted to have its cake and eat it too' - YouTube

[0]
all right we're going to switch gears
[1]
for a moment because there is one United
[2]
Airlines pilot who says that she's
[4]
blocked from finding a job or accessing
[7]
her 401K for refusing to get the
[9]
covid-19 vaccine joining me now is
[11]
United Airlines pilot and co-founder of
[14]
Airline employees for health Freedom
[16]
Sherry Walker Sherry I'm so glad that
[18]
you're joining us today let's go ahead
[20]
first by asking you just to sort of
[22]
briefly outline and describe your
[24]
experience the pushback you received and
[26]
where you are right now
[28]
hi Jackie and thank you yes myself and
[31]
two co-founders are leading 2 000 plus
[33]
United employees in a lawsuit against
[35]
our company for violations of Title VII
[38]
we asked for reasonable accommodations
[40]
in lieu of the covid vaccine and we were
[44]
similarly denied and put on indefinite
[47]
unpaid leave we filed a lawsuit in the
[50]
fifth circuit and right now we have
[52]
appealed the preliminary injunction and
[54]
are waiting from ruling in the fifth uh
[57]
down in New Orleans talk to me a little
[59]
bit about the hardship that you have
[61]
faced as a result of this I mean this is
[63]
a lengthy process to go through the
[65]
system here and and figure it out but
[68]
you know you're a human being and we're
[70]
talking about not getting a paycheck
[71]
here we're talking about not being able
[73]
to have health benefits these are real
[75]
issues
[77]
sure after the temporary restraining
[81]
order was lifted approximately well
[83]
slightly over a thousand of our pilots
[85]
and flight attendants were put on
[86]
indefinite unpaid leave we lost all
[89]
medical benefits so now I'm paying five
[90]
to six times more at Cobra rates we've
[94]
been told at first we could not get
[96]
outside employment then an international
[98]
wide body captain at 55 years old was
[100]
told I could go back and throw bags for
[102]
12 an hour starting at the bottom and
[105]
then those who did apply for those jobs
[107]
and the computer system automatically
[109]
kicked back a you're not vaccinated you
[111]
don't qualify for the job so some folks
[114]
try to apply for outside employment they
[116]
were told that we have no compete
[119]
Clauses and now they've tried to access
[121]
their Savings in their 401k and those
[124]
that are under 59 and a half like myself
[126]
do not have access to that money so it
[129]
all stems from the fact that United
[131]
wanted to have its cake and eat it too
[132]
it wanted to keep us as active employees
[135]
which means that at any time with the
[137]
two weeks notice we could be called back
[139]
versus inactive which then would have
[142]
triggered furlough protections allowed
[145]
us to gain employment but would have put
[147]
the other pilots and a flight attendant
[149]
restrictions so that they couldn't pick
[152]
up overtime yeah that's that's
[154]
interesting they're they're holding all
[155]
the strings they're making it convenient
[157]
so they could bring you back if they
[158]
need to but you're stuck in this
[160]
difficult position let me ask you a
[162]
rather personal question which
[163]
essentially is throughout this process
[164]
it might have just been easier as a
[167]
result of what you were facing to go get
[169]
the jab right did you ever consider that
[171]
and and how did you weigh uh the
[174]
benefits and the risks there
[176]
no I never considered it my faith is
[178]
such that I'm strong and will be fine
[180]
and if it means it's career change
[182]
that'll be fine too I believe Judge
[184]
James C ho in his descent pointed out
[187]
the um critical nature of a crisis of
[189]
conscience no person should be faced to
[192]
choose between feeding their family and
[194]
their faith in their God you're right um
[197]
good for you that's incredible resolve
[199]
but let me just ask you this in the
[200]
final moments that we have we're also
[202]
dealing with a labor shortage around the
[204]
country and so these vaccine mandates
[205]
have become a huge issue and we saw so
[208]
many disruptions within the airlines as
[210]
well but the airline said oh no no it
[211]
has nothing to do with the mandates
[213]
that's not what happened here your
[214]
thoughts
[216]
um I find that really interesting
[218]
because right now we knew in advance of
[221]
of the Christmas rush they had already
[222]
put out memos that would be short
[224]
omicrom has raged at the company and we
[227]
have some One Pilot even due to the um
[231]
uh overtime afforded 180
[234]
000 paycheck for the month of January
[236]
we've got people out here starving the
[238]
company's paying three to three and a
[240]
half times
[241]
um uh over time and that can't be good
[243]
for the shareholders no Sherry thank you
[245]
so much for coming on today I just want
[246]
to say we did reach out to United
[248]
Airlines for comments and they said they
[250]
have nothing to share at this time we'll
[252]
be right back
[253]
thank you
