Freight Brokers: Load board Tutorial Step-By-Step - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
so now if you've been on my channel
[1]
before you've heard me talk a lot about
[2]
cost
[3]
and why it's so important that we
[5]
control costs in our businesses for the
[7]
obvious reason
[8]
that when you first get started you're
[9]
not making a whole lot of money just yet
[11]
you don't have momentum you don't have
[13]
that traction that you're looking for
[15]
and you don't need to pull a whole lot
[17]
of unnecessary weight unnecessary costs
[19]
behind you
[20]
because it's going to slow your progress
[22]
so what we do is we streamline our
[24]
business
[25]
and we cut the costs that are not
[27]
necessary
[28]
now with that said a low board is a cost
[32]
that we are very okay with because it's
[34]
going to provide some things that
[35]
is going to help us to move our business
[38]
forward
[38]
but now there are some gadgets that low
[41]
boards offers that we don't need when we
[43]
first get started
[44]
so what we're going to do today is i'm
[45]
going to take you inside my low board of
[48]
preference i'm going to show you why
[50]
i've decided to use that low board and
[52]
i'm also going to show you
[54]
exactly how i use my low board i'm going
[56]
to show you three ways that you
[58]
can use a low board how it can be
[60]
beneficial to you and your business
[63]
so let's get to the business
[65]
[Music]
[70]
all right so as you can see i've logged
[71]
into the low board so we're getting
[72]
ready to get started here shortly but i
[74]
need your help before we do
[76]
i'm going to make sure that you square
[77]
it away on the lower board and you know
[78]
how to use the lower board
[79]
i need you to make sure that i'm squared
[80]
away on likes make sure you hit that
[82]
like button
[83]
make the like button turn blue it helps
[85]
me out a whole lot help my channel to
[86]
get viewed by a larger viewing audience
[88]
i certainly would appreciate that thank
[90]
you so much in advance and if you like
[92]
these type of videos and you want more
[93]
videos like this
[95]
my videos are centered around the
[96]
freight broker business and small
[97]
business ownership
[98]
so go ahead and hit that subscribe
[100]
button and also hit that notification
[102]
bell
[102]
and you'll be notified every time i
[104]
release these videos
[105]
so now as it pertains to low board you
[107]
have some different options available to
[109]
you you have some paid options for low
[110]
boards and then you have some boards
[112]
that you don't have to pay for
[113]
i like two boards i like the dat board
[116]
and i also like the truck stock board
[118]
now i've settled on the truck stop low
[120]
board i've had this low board since 2015
[124]
and i had dat and truck stop at the same
[126]
time
[127]
and decided i was going to use truck
[128]
stop exclusively
[130]
the reason why i did that is because
[132]
when i first got started in the business
[134]
and i was using both boards i wanted to
[136]
get in contact with
[137]
owner operators reason why i wanted to
[139]
get in contact with owner operators more
[141]
so than large carriers
[143]
is because at that time owner operators
[145]
were more willing to work with me than
[147]
large carriers were
[148]
so i wanted to get in contact with as
[150]
many owner operators as possible
[152]
so when i would post loads to both of
[154]
these boards most of my calls would come
[156]
from truck stop
[157]
so i chose truck stop to work
[160]
exclusively with
[161]
now you can use either board whether
[163]
that's truck stop
[164]
or whether that's dat or then you might
[166]
say hey i don't want to
[168]
pay for a low board i want to use a low
[169]
board that's free now of course
[172]
you know that might be a case of what
[173]
you get what you pay for i've never used
[175]
free load boards
[176]
these are the two that i've used and
[177]
i've settled upon truck stop
[179]
for the reason i just shared with you so
[181]
now when you start working with shippers
[182]
shippers are going to request
[184]
rates from you in specific lanes they're
[186]
going to say hey brandon
[187]
we need you to give us a rate within a
[189]
lane that's moving from north carolina
[191]
going to wisconsin
[192]
you're going to dial in on that get all
[194]
the particulars the zip codes and all of
[196]
that good stuff
[197]
but you're gonna need a place to go to
[199]
where you can
[200]
start to establish that rate that is the
[202]
purpose of a low board at least that's
[204]
one purpose one of the main purposes of
[206]
it
[207]
another reason why we use low boards is
[209]
because we use them to search for trucks
[211]
in specific lanes for example if you've
[214]
posted a load on a low board
[216]
and let's say you've posted that load
[218]
from green bay wisconsin
[220]
to marshville north carolina well now
[222]
you need to find out how many trucks
[225]
are in that specific lane so you would
[227]
do a truck search
[229]
on that specific lane and it'll show you
[231]
exactly how many trucks are in that lane
[233]
and then you'll be able to reach out to
[234]
those trucks and negotiate that
[237]
particular load movement
[238]
so that's another reason that we use it
[240]
is to search for trucks
[241]
another reason why we use a low board is
[243]
to
[244]
not only search for trucks but to go in
[246]
and post our loads once we receive those
[249]
loads
[250]
from the shipper for example the shipper
[252]
has given me a load and said hey brandon
[254]
this is your load we need you to move
[255]
this load we agree with the price that
[258]
you've given us
[259]
now what i'm going to do is i'm going to
[260]
take that to my load board and i'm going
[262]
to post it on my load board
[264]
so the trucking community can see that
[266]
and now they can start to give me a call
[268]
on those loads so that we can get that
[270]
load moved
[271]
so those are the three reasons that you
[272]
need a low board number one
[274]
you want to be able to search for trucks
[276]
in specific lanes number two you want to
[278]
be able to go and post the loads that
[279]
you've gotten from your shippers
[281]
and number three you want a rate
[283]
sourcing tool so you'll be able to use
[284]
that resourcing tool to go
[286]
in your load board and find out the
[288]
historical rates in a specific lane
[291]
from the last seven days all the way up
[292]
to the last 12 months
[294]
okay so what we're going to do now is
[295]
i'm going to go in and show you exactly
[297]
how the load board works i just wanted
[298]
to give you an explanation to give you a
[300]
brief description of how each section
[302]
works
[302]
how posting loads work searching for
[304]
trucks and the rate sourcing tool
[306]
now i want to go in and let you see how
[308]
it worked we're going to start off today
[309]
and we're going to be talking about
[310]
using it
[311]
for searching for trucks now why would
[314]
you want to search for trucks
[316]
well if you were getting a rate for a
[317]
shipper you want to take a look
[319]
inside that lane and see how many trucks
[321]
are going to be available to you
[323]
that way you know if it's tight capacity
[325]
then your lane is going to be a little
[326]
bit steeper it's going to cost you more
[328]
to move that lane if there is a whole
[331]
lot of trucks in that lane then you're
[332]
going to have more negotiating power
[334]
maybe you won't have to pay as much for
[336]
it in that lane but it's important to
[337]
know
[338]
how many trucks are in the lane so how
[340]
do we do that we go into our low board
[342]
and we hit
[344]
search for trucks we hit this searching
[346]
board or this searching
[348]
label there and you'll see trucks lanes
[351]
truck bids auto match and now trucks
[353]
come up
[353]
and we would just hit trucks there and
[355]
it's going to take in to
[356]
take us to the truck searching part of
[359]
our low board
[361]
now when it does that i've already put
[363]
in martial north carolina
[365]
to green bay it's going to come up and
[367]
show us
[368]
the number of trucks that are available
[370]
in that within that lane
[371]
it's going to give us the name of the
[372]
truck the phone number tell us the date
[375]
that it's available
[376]
it's also going to show us the age how
[378]
long it's been available
[380]
and it's going to show us the
[381]
origination city florence south carolina
[384]
in this case
[385]
and it'll say the distance from
[388]
your originating point now your
[390]
originating point is marshville north
[392]
carolina
[392]
so if you see here in distance it says
[394]
64. that means that it's 64 miles from
[397]
marshfield north carolina so it's within
[399]
100 miles so
[401]
anytime you have trucks within 100 miles
[403]
they would be willing
[404]
to go and get your rate or go and get
[406]
your load if it's more than that then
[408]
you know they're not so willing to do
[409]
that but here it is everybody is within
[412]
100 miles 100 miles
[413]
okay so it shows us that we have about
[418]
10 trucks in this lane so this is going
[420]
to give us a good feel for the number of
[422]
trucks that we have in this lane
[423]
and we know by looking at this we're
[425]
going to probably have some challenges
[426]
in this lane
[427]
so when we start to give pricing we're
[429]
going to give pricing based on
[431]
tight capacity but you wouldn't know
[433]
that if you didn't have
[435]
a lower board where you could go in and
[437]
search for the number of trucks
[438]
in a specific lane so that's the purpose
[440]
of you know being able to use this low
[442]
board
[443]
to go in and find out exactly how many
[445]
trucks are in the lane
[447]
now i want to talk to you another part
[449]
about the low board and that is
[451]
the low port posting option now
[454]
you would be posting your load after you
[457]
have received it from the shipper the
[458]
shipper says hey
[459]
you've we've you're authorized to move
[461]
the load we're okay with the price that
[463]
you've given us now you got to take that
[464]
load to a low board
[466]
so the trucking community can start
[468]
bidding on it so we're going to take
[469]
that
[470]
load to the low board here and we're
[472]
just going to go to
[475]
posting loads you see up the top here we
[477]
have home searching and posting we'll
[479]
click on posting
[480]
and we'll be able to click on loads
[482]
there and now we can go and post that
[484]
load
[485]
on our load board and we'll just go
[487]
through the process here putting in this
[489]
information
[490]
if you see across the top here it has
[492]
origin we'll put marshville north
[494]
carolina in there
[497]
and then we'll put an nc there for north
[500]
carolina
[501]
choose our reefer there for our
[504]
trailer and then we're going to choose a
[506]
destination there
[508]
we said that we were going to be going
[509]
to green bay wisconsin
[512]
so we'll put green bay there you'll see
[514]
state here
[516]
and we'll put wi for wisconsin
[519]
now you also see here that there's a
[520]
rate there we can go in and post
[522]
let's say we want to put 2 800 on that
[525]
lane we can go in and post 2 800
[527]
in there and when we post that it's
[529]
going to post it out
[530]
to the lower board and show that
[532]
alliance logistics has a load
[534]
moving from marshville north carolina to
[537]
green bay
[538]
that's how we post a load and and then
[541]
the trucking community can see that load
[543]
and they can start calling us to
[545]
negotiate the movement of that load
[547]
so that's two things that we use it for
[549]
rate searching
[550]
and posting our loads the next thing
[552]
that we're going to talk about
[554]
is the rate sourcing tool called rate
[556]
mate
[557]
very very good tool to have for your
[559]
business okay so now we're going to take
[561]
a look at the rate sourcing tool i was
[562]
telling you about earlier called rate
[564]
mate
[564]
when you get a load board usually you're
[566]
going to have the ability to search for
[568]
trucks and the ability to
[570]
post your loads and you have to have an
[572]
additional tool called rate made if you
[574]
have truck stop
[575]
in order to source rates now
[578]
dat has a tool called dat express
[581]
and they have a rate sourcing tool in
[584]
that package
[584]
now if you pay more money you can get
[586]
more precise rates
[588]
and that's the same way with uh truck
[591]
stop
[591]
so the more money you spend the more
[593]
precise rates that you're gonna get at
[594]
least that's how it's advertised
[596]
now with that said this tool is called
[598]
rate mate
[599]
and i think that it's a great tool i've
[601]
used it since i had it
[603]
it has worked well for me but i don't
[605]
depend on it to give me exact rates
[607]
i just depend on it to give me a
[609]
starting place
[611]
for me to establish my rate in that lane
[614]
okay because what you have to understand
[616]
with rates
[617]
especially these rates that are on this
[619]
low board is they are average rates that
[621]
means that
[622]
so many lanes cost more than this
[624]
particular average and so many
[626]
cost less than that so you have to
[627]
establish a point where you can get the
[629]
load moved
[630]
as a freight broker okay now so here it
[633]
goes here
[634]
we're going to go to the ratemate page
[635]
and it starts off just like all the rest
[637]
of them
[638]
at the top here we have some tabs
[641]
searching
[641]
posting load manager decision tools my
[644]
products
[645]
we click on my products and we come to
[647]
the rate mate tool here that's the
[650]
rate sourcing tool that we were talking
[651]
about so we've already clicked that
[654]
and we're going to start out here with
[656]
marshville north carolina
[658]
and green bay being our pickup and
[661]
drop-off points
[662]
so we've already put that in and then we
[664]
clicked on
[665]
find rates and when we click find rates
[667]
it's going to
[668]
come up and populate and show us what
[670]
the rates have been in this lane
[672]
for the last seven days all the way out
[675]
to the last 12 months
[676]
so now if you take a look at this you'll
[678]
see that it says posted rate averages
[680]
here
[680]
then it'll say pay rate averages here
[683]
and pay shipper rates
[685]
now what we want to take a look here is
[687]
at the paid shipper rates
[688]
over the last 30 days there have been
[690]
four reports
[692]
at 3 574
[695]
average total rate and the average miles
[697]
is 1408 miles and then the average rate
[700]
the truck is 2.54 cents a mile
[703]
and if you look here it's showing 2.64
[707]
cents a mile
[708]
and that's the average rate to shipper
[711]
under our pay rate averages
[713]
and you'll notice that this number will
[716]
change our average rate to shipper will
[717]
change because that number is what we're
[719]
going to the shipper with
[721]
based on how much money we want to make
[723]
as a freight broker
[724]
because here it says please enter your
[726]
desired gross margin percentage
[728]
this will be used to calculate the
[730]
average rate to shipper column
[732]
so if we see the average rate the
[733]
shipper car alarm is 2.64 cents per mile
[738]
if we change this to 20 or
[741]
to 15 percent
[747]
it'll recalculate that and it'll drop it
[751]
down and it'll say
[752]
now it'll say 2048 cents a mile
[756]
so this changes based on how much
[760]
commission you are going to want to make
[762]
standard margin is about 15
[764]
sometimes you're going to make more than
[766]
that sometimes you're going to make less
[767]
than that
[768]
but this is the rate mate tool and how
[771]
you use that tool
[772]
as a starting place to establish a rate
[775]
okay
[780]
you'll also notice on the side over here
[781]
there's some rate index rate trending
[784]
fuel costs trucks pass watch and get
[786]
rate analysis which we don't have access
[788]
to there so we're going to go into
[790]
rate trending here and it's going to
[793]
give
[794]
us a breakdown of what the rates are
[797]
in this lane all the way out from
[799]
october
[800]
back to november 2019
[804]
and they give us the average miles
[806]
average rate per mile
[807]
average fuel cost per mile also if you
[810]
go over here and you go into fuel costs
[812]
if you wanted to see what the fuel would
[814]
cost you to move
[816]
from marshville north carolina to
[819]
green bay wisconsin you'll just hit fuel
[821]
costs here if it'll load up for us
[824]
and it'll show us what the fuel costs
[826]
are
[833]
there we go the matter of fact is not
[835]
giving us that for some reason right now
[838]
okay if you click on trucks
[842]
we can click trucks there and it'll show
[844]
us
[845]
what kind of activity we got going on in
[847]
this lane let's
[849]
dig it up there so we can see it there
[852]
it'll show us the truck supply and
[853]
demand
[855]
marshville north carolina low is picking
[857]
up 288
[859]
411 here then if you see it come down
[861]
here it gives us a broken negotiation
[863]
strength
[864]
neutral not so bad not so good
[868]
and then over here on the green bay side
[870]
if you're coming out of green bay
[872]
it's very bad so that means that there's
[874]
not a lot of trucks coming out of green
[876]
bay
[877]
so that tells you that it's a seasonal
[879]
thing weather is bad in green bay right
[881]
now
[882]
so you're going to be it's going to be
[883]
hard to get trucks out of there which
[884]
automatically mean
[886]
the lane is going to cost you a little
[888]
bit more money or maybe a lot more
[891]
just depends so now this is our ratemate
[893]
tool want to give you an idea of how it
[894]
works
[895]
always remember that this is just a
[897]
starting place for your your rate some
[899]
people use this as exact
[900]
i don't suggest that you do that just
[902]
use this as a starting place and then
[904]
dig down
[905]
to establish your rate what you can get
[907]
the load moved at
[909]
because what it boils down to is you
[911]
know you negotiating with a truck driver
[913]
and what that number is going to be your
[916]
your way of negotiating may be different
[917]
from my way of negotiating so i may get
[919]
numbers
[920]
different numbers than you get so the
[922]
whole idea here
[923]
is to figure out what number you're
[926]
going to go to your
[927]
with your go to your shipper at and to
[929]
be able to make money
[931]
when you sell that load to a carrier
[933]
bottom line
[934]
so now here's a quick summary of what we
[936]
just talked about in this video
[937]
we talked about truck stop and why we
[939]
use truck stop as a low board we told
[941]
you that
[941]
when we first got started in this
[943]
business we were using truck stop and
[945]
d-a-t
[946]
and we decided to use truck top
[947]
exclusively because what we found is
[949]
that when we were posting
[951]
our loads on both of those boards we
[953]
were getting more calls from truck stop
[955]
from owner operators and that's who we
[956]
wanted to work with
[957]
so we decided to go with truck stop and
[960]
that's not to say that d.a.t is not a
[961]
great board as well
[963]
because it is just depends on what your
[965]
preference is our preference was
[967]
truck stop now the next thing that we
[969]
talked about
[970]
was how we use our load board and we
[973]
talked about three reasons why you need
[975]
to
[975]
use load boards and those are posting
[977]
loads searching for trucks
[979]
and of course for a rate sourcing tool
[981]
and then we went into our board and
[983]
showed you
[984]
how we post loads how we search for
[987]
trucks and how we use
[989]
the rate sourcing tool all right so
[990]
thank you so much for spending some of
[991]
