Stay on work insurance or start Medicare? - YouTube

Today's lesson is for the people like聽
you that are turning 65 and eligible聽聽
[8]
for Medicare but you're going to keep working聽
or your spouse is going to keep working and聽聽
[15]
you're covered under group insurance and you're聽
wondering should I sign up for Medicare now聽聽
[23]
or can I wait till later? And this is聽
the number one question that we get聽聽
[29]
with people calling in and people are generally聽
real concerned about this and what their real聽聽
[34]
concern because they've read enough is聽
there are penalties if you get this wrong聽聽
[42]
and this is the number one thing that they're聽
concerned about and they want our consulting聽聽
[47]
and our advice like should I go ahead and聽
sign up for Medicare I don't think I need it聽聽
[54]
but I might need it but I sure need it later聽
and I don't want to pay these penalties,聽聽
[58]
I don't really understand them, but will I have聽
to pay these penalties what do you think? We聽聽
[63]
even get people typing this in on the bottom of聽
the videos, so I'm going to work to giving you聽聽
[68]
a framework for advice and my framework for聽
advice really doesn't replace a consultation聽聽
[75]
because everybody's situation is different and聽
you really need to get some help with this.聽聽
[82]
Now the thing that they ought to be more concerned聽
about is if you don't get this right and you聽聽
[90]
delay in signing up for Medicare stay on your聽
group insurance and then you later want it聽聽
[96]
and you haven't met all the rules and this works聽
out to be a bad decision of skipping Medicare聽聽
[102]
or delaying Medicare you are going to聽
face a delay in actually getting Medicare,聽聽
[109]
so there's two problems with the delay if you聽
don't have it right is one is you're going to pay聽聽
[117]
a penalty and those penalties are for life I mean聽
once they start then they're going to go on for聽聽
[122]
the rest of your life and then the second thing is聽
like say you all of a sudden need Medicare in like聽聽
[129]
June or July and if you don't qualify聽
for a special enrollment period聽聽
[134]
you're going to have to wait till January to March聽
to apply of the next year and then if you apply聽聽
[140]
and are accepted January to March it doesn't start聽
till July 1st of the next year so you've had this聽聽
[146]
big gap where you're now a Medicare age person,聽
your insurance has ended, and you have a delay聽聽
[152]
in getting on to Medicare, big problem, so that聽
doesn't necessarily happen to that many people聽聽
[159]
but it can happen to enough and then we have聽
people like that calling us in oh no what do I do聽聽
[164]
and there are things we can do to try to work the聽
system to get you so if you're one of those people聽聽
[170]
where you delayed way back when and now you're聽
discovering you got a problem give us a call and聽聽
[175]
we'll we'll try to work through the situation with聽
you so now so the real thing to delay is I've got聽聽
[185]
group insurance, I'm happy with it, it doesn't聽
cost me a lot and I'm going to keep on working聽聽
[192]
I don't know how long or two more years or聽
three more years or an indefinite period of time聽聽
[198]
happy with my group insurance don't pay a聽
lot and I really don't even want to mess聽聽
[202]
with all this Medicare stuff but I got this聽
one little thing that I want to ask you which聽聽
[209]
is the topic of today's video so it's what聽
we're trying to prevent are penalties later聽聽
[217]
and a delay and so we've got work insurance and聽
then the first question we have for these people聽聽
[224]
what about your spouse you know I聽
mean the first thing is your spouse聽聽
[228]
older than you or is your spouse younger than聽
you because if your spouse is younger than you聽聽
[234]
they're not eligible for Medicare now at some聽
point in the future and then the next question聽聽
[239]
about the spouse is are they covered under your聽
group insurance and if the answer to that is yes聽聽
[247]
and you need them to be covered let's just say聽
they're 62., you're turning 65, they're going聽聽
[254]
to need health insurance for the next three聽
years and if you're going to keep working聽聽
[259]
and you plan to keep working anyhow聽
and plan to stay on the group insurance聽聽
[264]
then you're going to want to stay on that聽
group insurance because you need to cover聽聽
[270]
them and a lot of group insurance will聽
not let you cover a dependent or a spouse聽聽
[277]
even if you're still working if unless you're聽
enrolled in the group insurance yourself so we聽聽
[285]
need to go to the spouse and many of spouses that聽
are three years younger or seven years younger聽聽
[291]
they're still working they have their own group聽
insurance at their own place so we don't need to聽聽
[297]
we don't need to worry about that we also have聽
people in that situation that are turning 65聽聽
[301]
now but they've been retired for a while but聽
they're covered under their younger spouse's聽聽
[308]
group insurance so they're wondering聽
should I stay on this covered under聽聽
[313]
spouse's group insurance or should I sign up for聽
Medicare and get my own so people are all over聽聽
[317]
the board in their places and I don't really聽
want to get into doing planning and a ton of聽聽
[323]
examples today because I really want to just walk聽
you through the material so first thing we need聽聽
[329]
to look at is yes you're keeping working yes you聽
have group insurance and then we need to find out聽聽
[336]
is the spouse relying upon this group insurance聽
yes or no and then what are their other options聽聽
[344]
to make it to 65 just like you are now to then get聽
on Medicare okay so we need to clear all that up聽聽
[354]
once we have the answer to all those questions聽
now we need to just look at the work insurance聽聽
[359]
we need to look at the group聽
insurance at work and we need to say聽聽
[363]
first of all how good is this you know a lot of聽
people say how do you like oh it's good I love it聽聽
[369]
and then they haven't been sick other than going聽
to the doctor and it covers the doctor's visits or聽聽
[374]
they got some medicines but you know when we dig聽
a little deeper what's your deductible and a lot聽聽
[380]
of group insurance now has a high deductible you聽
know three four five six thousand dollars and then聽聽
[388]
it's not a hundred percent after that it's you聽
know 80/20 or 70/30 and so if you were to have聽聽
[394]
a serious sickness come on you might be looking at聽
your group insurance and you might be out 10 grand聽聽
[402]
and so that doesn't mean dump the group insurance聽
it's just we're going to want to look into the聽聽
[407]
group insurance you're going to want to look into聽
your group insurance and just see how good is this聽聽
[412]
group insurance and how good is it going to be if聽
I have a serious illness okay because you now have聽聽
[418]
alternatives and that alternative is Medicare so聽
that now we're looking at do I really want to stay聽聽
[424]
on the group insurance and and then besides the聽
benefits and the deductibles and copayments and聽聽
[430]
all that kind of stuff the next thing is how much聽
do I pay personally for this group insurance do I聽聽
[437]
you know do I pay for $500 a month聽
how much do I pay for my spouse聽聽
[442]
you know if your spouse is covered on it and he聽
or she is about your same age then you know we're聽聽
[448]
back on the spouse thing but you're just going聽
to want to look at your out-of-pocket money that聽聽
[453]
you're kicking into this group insurance and we're聽
going to want to come up with a monthly number聽聽
[458]
because it's probably not going to be聽
that expensive or as expensive as you聽聽
[464]
think to get on Medicare I mean for part b you聽
got $148.50 a month is the standard premium聽聽
[471]
but if you make a lot of income聽
then you're going to have irma聽聽
[476]
on top of that and so all of these are not leading聽
to sign up for Medicare but we're just going to聽聽
[483]
want to look at the whole situation and say how聽
much would it cost me to dump the group insurance聽聽
[488]
then I'm going to save whatever I'm paying for聽
the group for either me or my spouse and me聽聽
[497]
then so how much am I kicking out now and then聽
how much will I kick out for Medicare and then聽聽
[503]
how much will a Supplement be how much will a聽
Medicare Advantage Plan be which a lot of times聽聽
[508]
those are zero and we put all the money together聽
you may find out after we do this research that聽聽
[515]
you're actually going to be better off coverage聽
wise and maybe about the same for money you're聽聽
[520]
kicking out and you may say it's going to be a聽
good decision for me to dump the group insurance聽聽
[526]
you know I can't make those in advance聽
but I'm just walking you through聽聽
[531]
what we do with people to really make this first聽
decision do I want to sign up for Medicare at聽聽
[537]
65 or do I want to delay now we're going to get聽
in do you have the option to delay and to delay聽聽
[547]
means you're still working you're actively聽
working you're not a retiree pass 65 and聽聽
[554]
your coverage that you have on the group聽
insurance is what Medicare calls creditable聽聽
[561]
it's not credible it's creditable meaning聽
that Medicare has all their own rules聽聽
[568]
and they require you to avoid these penalties聽
if you want to avoid these penalties later聽聽
[574]
to prove to them when you later get onto聽
Medicare has the coverage so I from 65 to 68聽聽
[583]
which I just turned yesterday those three聽
years or 36 months that I didn't have Medicare聽聽
[592]
did I have creditable coverage yes or no聽
and if you didn't have creditable coverage聽聽
[599]
then you're going to face penalties and聽
you're going to face that delay thing聽聽
[604]
is you're not going to be able to get on it right聽
away and that's going to create another problem聽聽
[608]
so what we want to do is we really want to look at聽
your group insurance now before you're 65 before聽聽
[617]
you make that decision and say is it creditable聽
and it's pretty simple if you look at my chart聽聽
[623]
here creditable coverage is really a group聽
health plan from an employer that employs more聽聽
[632]
than 20 employees I just had a guy calling in a聽
couple days ago and we got to talk to him and his聽聽
[639]
employer has 15 employees and it took us聽
a while to get to that and I said well聽聽
[646]
you don't really have the option聽
of staying on that group insurance聽聽
[651]
and I'm guessing your employer is going to聽
be thrilled when you go on Medicare because聽聽
[656]
for you and your spouse they're聽
paying a tremendous amount of money,聽聽
[663]
probably a couple grand a month, to cover you聽
and then you're paying a little part of that聽聽
[671]
and you know and furthermore if聽
you've stayed on that your coverage聽聽
[677]
is not going to be credible it's going to be over聽
here in the non-creditable because you you're on a聽聽
[682]
group of plan and we we get lots of people later聽
on that come in and they've kind of thought they聽聽
[689]
were all right maybe they're a professional like a聽
lawyer or a CPA and they were paying for all this聽聽
[696]
so the first thing they're upset about you mean聽
to tell me that I could have dumped this insurance聽聽
[702]
several years ago when I turned 65 and聽
saved this $2,000 a month and I could have聽聽
[710]
changed and gone on Medicare and paid my Part B聽
and a little bit of IRMAA and bought a Supplement聽聽
[718]
and you know I would have you know I would have聽
been paying $400 a month or $300 a month instead聽聽
[724]
of $2,000 yep that's exactly what they didn't get聽
any consulting they just kept right on trucking聽聽
[730]
leaving everything like it is and then now we聽
got to deal with the penalties and the delay聽聽
[736]
and many times we're able to work through this聽
and do some consulting and fill out some forms and聽聽
[743]
we can fix things for people but you know I don't聽
want you relying on that so the real thing of the聽聽
[749]
creditable coverage is this coverage creditable聽
and to be creditable it needs to be a group health聽聽
[755]
plan in a business where there's more than 20聽
employees now I'm going to go over some things聽聽
[761]
that are non-creditable coverage聽
and one of the biggest ones is COBRA聽聽
[766]
we have lots of people that come to us that聽
are like 67 they retired at 65 they didn't sign聽聽
[774]
up for Medicare perhaps they're a highly paid聽
executive and when they retired at 65 or 66 or聽聽
[781]
whatever the employer as part of their retirement聽
package said oh we're going to pay COBRA for both聽聽
[787]
of you the husband and wife we're going to pay聽
that for you for the whole 18 months just as an聽聽
[794]
adjustment for retirement so then they just keep聽
right on trucking they got this wonderful employer聽聽
[800]
and then at the end of the 18 months they're聽
coming to us hey now I need to get on Medicare聽聽
[805]
that COBRA doesn't count as a creditable聽
coverage even though it was group insurance聽聽
[810]
they were retired doesn't count retiree聽
plans so there's a lot of places that聽聽
[817]
offer retire well not as many as anymore a聽
lot of governments they have a retiree plan聽聽
[823]
but Medicare most retiree plans require you聽
to sign up for Medicare anyhow I mean that's聽聽
[830]
underneath the base of that and then they sit聽
on top of it but if you are not signed up for聽聽
[835]
Medicare you can't later get on Medicare and use聽
your retiree plan as a way to get out of this.聽聽
[843]
Marketplace plans we have people that were on聽
this thing with the government and maybe they're聽聽
[849]
getting a subsidy on the marketplace they're聽
under 65 and then they just keep it somehow and聽聽
[855]
then they come to us later or they're asking us in聽
advance can I just keep the marketplace coverage聽聽
[860]
and the answer that well yeah maybe you can聽
but it's not going to count as creditable聽聽
[865]
coverage so we really need to take a serious聽
look at getting on Medicare same with Tricare聽聽
[870]
same with veterans benefits because we have many聽
people at 65 say oh I'm going to rely on the VA so聽聽
[878]
and that's good and if you're going to聽
rely on the VA for the rest of your life聽聽
[882]
and you know you qualify more power to you and聽
you know we'll even help you with that but if聽聽
[889]
you later at 75 years old you say you know I think聽
i'd rather have private insurance now so I don't聽聽
[896]
want to get on the regular Medicare and I want聽
to get a Supplement you're not going to be able聽聽
[901]
to use the veterans as a as an excuse and then聽
the FEHB is the federal employees health benefit聽聽
[908]
so there's more on this list I just simply聽
wanted to teach you that you need to in advance聽聽
[916]
determine whether your solution for Medicare past聽
65 is going to be looked upon as creditable and聽聽
[924]
for the most practical purposes that's聽
large groups large group insurance聽聽
[930]
still working past 65. I'm Hans聽
Scheil, I thank you for listening.
