[3]
we would absolutely do a special session
[6]
and so those are issues like property
[8]
insurance and trying to you know bring
[10]
some sanity and stabilize and have a
[12]
functioning market
[14]
i'm confident that we're going to be
[15]
able to get that done
[18]
governor ron desantis calling for a
[19]
special session of the legislature as
[21]
floridians continue to deal with the
[23]
property insurance crisis republicans
[25]
did not jump on board to adopt one next
[27]
month but there's still a chance the
[28]
governor will in fact make it happen cbs
[31]
4's joe gorcho is live tonight on why
[32]
the time to act is now before this
[34]
situation really becomes catastrophic
[37]
joe
[39]
jim rising property insurance rates are
[42]
consuming so much of our conversations
[44]
at home these days everyone is impacted
[47]
by this no one is immune so while the
[49]
rates rise some insurance companies
[51]
right here in florida are beginning to
[54]
shut their doors we spoke with a woman
[56]
in parkland today who's still waiting
[57]
for her claim to be fully processed
[59]
after her previous insurance company
[62]
went to liquidation
[64]
essentially i'm still in the same spot
[66]
last december mimi bright had friends
[69]
over when she noticed her carpet was
[72]
squishy i was walking with bare feet on
[74]
my carpeting and i heard squish a leak
[77]
was discovered in her bathroom which
[79]
damaged the floors and left behind mold
[82]
what happened next carpeting ripped up
[85]
pieces of wooden floor removed walls
[87]
were ripped out to fix piping and get
[89]
rid of the mold fortunately this was my
[92]
first experience with something
[95]
brights insurer at the time was avatar
[98]
they eventually issued a claim check but
[100]
bright could not cash it avatar's
[103]
financial accounts were frozen entering
[105]
liquidation last month then she got a
[108]
notification it said one you have 30
[110]
days to get a new policy she had to go
[112]
to the florida insurance guarantee
[115]
association feiga covers claims for
[117]
insolvent members breit still waiting
[120]
for her claim to go through and with an
[123]
unresolved claim she said it was nearly
[125]
impossible to find a new insurer
[128]
eventually she landed with citizens and
[130]
the sticker shock was big her avatar
[133]
policy from 2021 compared to her
[136]
citizens jumped up 62 percent to 7
[140]
430 dollars the financial hardship and
[144]
it's huge over a three thousand dollar
[146]
increase for me is a lot and bright's
[149]
not alone avatar also dropped broward
[152]
county property appraiser marty kiara if
[154]
that happened to me it's also happening
[155]
to many other thousands of people and
[158]
it's not a great process it's not fun
[159]
and you get very concerned because at
[161]
the end of the day your home is your
[163]
most important valuable asset in my
[165]
conversation with mark freelander the
[167]
insurance information institute expects
[170]
average renewal rates to rise between 30
[172]
to 40 percent this year many families
[175]
can't afford this and their only choice
[177]
is going to be to sell their home free
[180]
lander says eight to 10 insurance
[182]
companies in florida are in a volatile
[184]
financial position he calls this a
[186]
man-made crisis this is not a natural
[189]
disaster caused by two factors
[192]
rampant roof replacement fraud schemes
[195]
and runaway litigation filed against
[198]
insurers over 100 thousand property
[200]
claims lawsuits were filed in florida
[203]
last year according to the institute
[205]
study friedlander says no other state
[207]
had more than 900 people like bright are
[210]
caught in the crosshairs of litigation
[213]
and rising insurance rates people aren't
[215]
sure what the solution is and whether
[217]
things will change or get better so i
[220]
think that's adding even more concern
[225]
and hunchovsky adds that if the state
[227]
legislator can act in a special session
[229]
it's still unclear when floridians would
[232]
see the benefits of new legislation
[234]
passed joe gorcho cbs4 news tonight
