Understanding Early Adopters - The BIRA 91 Story - YouTube

Channel: unknown

[1]
for a while now i've been looking for an
[4]
interesting story to explain the concept
[7]
of early adopters
[9]
so as part of that process i asked
[11]
myself what i was an early adopter for
[15]
and what my behavior was as an early
[18]
adopter
[19]
so the first thing i looked at was the
[21]
technology space
[23]
and i was an early adopter for
[25]
smartphones and apps
[28]
back in the day uh in the early days of
[30]
the smartphone
[31]
uh but i no longer am you know i mean i
[34]
i use uh i use a three-year-old phone
[37]
uh which is probably a five-year-old
[38]
model so definitely not a early adopter
[41]
for uh phone smartphones anymore and
[44]
then i asked myself you know what am i
[46]
an early adopter for and you know i came
[49]
up with two things
[50]
the first was music i love listening to
[53]
music and i try keep trying new music
[56]
and back in around 2012 i had actually
[59]
set up a dlna-based flac
[62]
uh streaming network at home so that i
[65]
could listen to music anywhere in the
[67]
house
[68]
at you know high fidelity and when apple
[71]
started streaming lossless music in
[73]
india last year i was probably one of
[75]
the first to turn it on
[77]
but the whole space of
[79]
music streaming with all the bit rates
[82]
and lossless audio and all of that is
[84]
very geeky and not really relatable to a
[87]
lot of people
[89]
then i looked at the second industry for
[91]
which i'm an early adopter alcohol
[94]
uh i have been experimenting with
[96]
alcohol and beers in particular for
[99]
quite some time now
[101]
so
[102]
i figured that would be a very
[104]
interesting space
[106]
uh
[106]
to you know to look for stories about
[108]
early adopters in today's story we will
[111]
look at you know how i discovered beera
[114]
and you know how beera grew its market
[117]
share and you know the role the early
[118]
adopters played in how that happened
[123]
before i get into the story let me give
[125]
a little bit of background about the the
[128]
main protagonist which is not me
[130]
which is beera91 and also a bit of
[133]
context about the market at the time
[136]
beerus 91 is a is a venture capital
[139]
backed beer manufacturer they had
[142]
headquartered out of new delhi and they
[146]
launched their first two beers in india
[148]
in early 2015.
[150]
the two beers they launched at the time
[152]
were beera white and beera blonde
[155]
and
[156]
they launched it in new delhi in early
[158]
2015.
[160]
and in late 2015 around the november
[163]
time frame they launched these two beers
[165]
in bangalore as well
[167]
beera 91 is currently one of the fastest
[170]
growing beers in the world and they have
[172]
about seven or eight
[174]
flavors of beer today
[177]
the beer market in india is dominated by
[180]
kingfisher
[181]
and
[182]
there are local brands such as
[185]
golden eagle in tamil nadu
[188]
high voltage in the andamans and the
[191]
king's beer in goa
[193]
these are available locally and very
[195]
popular with the local crowd but at a
[197]
national level
[199]
if you go into a new place the beer you
[201]
would ask for is kingfisher
[203]
imported beers such as whole garden
[206]
corona
[207]
are also available
[209]
but they are available probably only in
[210]
the tier one cities and they're priced
[213]
at about four times the price of
[216]
kingfisher
[218]
with that context set let's get on with
[220]
the story so this happened in november
[223]
or december of 2015
[226]
i used to work for a company called
[228]
sabre at the time
[229]
and i used to have calls till late in
[232]
the evening monday to thursday
[234]
but on friday evenings i would not take
[236]
any calls and i would sort of wind up
[238]
work early and on my way back from
[241]
office i would stop at the neighborhood
[244]
liquor store
[245]
and pick up four four bottles of whole
[248]
garden and then my wife and i would have
[251]
that over friday night dinner to kind of
[253]
wind down for the weekend
[255]
so one day when i was at the store
[258]
i went to pick up my whole gardens and
[260]
then i noticed that this new beer which
[262]
was kept right next to her garden it was
[265]
an interesting looking bottle had a
[267]
picture of a monkey on it um so it
[270]
peaked my curiosity i picked it up and
[273]
uh you know this is something i always
[275]
do pick up a bottle and you know read
[276]
the story on the label
[279]
so this beer
[281]
which is called beer
[282]
beer white
[284]
uh was apparently an indian beer being
[287]
manufactured in belgium
[289]
and it was a wheat beer
[291]
um so i figured you know this sounds
[293]
interesting i should probably try this
[295]
and then i asked the shopkeeper you know
[297]
uh
[298]
do you you know
[299]
any any uh inputs on this beer he just
[302]
said it's a it's a new beer very helpful
[305]
right
[306]
uh and then i looked at the price uh it
[308]
was half the price of whole garden
[310]
uh so what i did was i picked up three
[313]
bottles of whole garden one bottle of
[315]
beera went home tried it loved it next
[318]
week i picked up four bottles of beera
[321]
no who gardens right and the week after
[324]
i went back and i picked up a whole
[326]
crate of beera and we threw a party that
[329]
weekend and uh you know the beer that
[331]
was served uh was beera and over the
[334]
next couple of weeks we had a couple of
[336]
more parties and the beer being served
[338]
was always beera from then on
[340]
right and uh people uh the guests my
[344]
friends my family you know the guests
[346]
they loved it and they also started
[348]
trying out beera on their own
[350]
and uh once beerus started gaining
[353]
popularity and market share you know
[355]
they started their manufacturing
[356]
operations in india uh which helped them
[359]
bring the price down so that it was you
[361]
know it could compete more with
[363]
kingfisher on price on on in terms of
[366]
price
[369]
me though
[370]
while i was buying beera as my staple
[373]
beer i kept trying other brands that
[376]
kept popping up like simba
[379]
white towel
[380]
uh there was the eight finger ready
[383]
people's lagger um
[385]
and a white rhino hopper and whatnot i
[388]
just kept trying different beers to see
[390]
you know if there was anything new that
[392]
was coming out which is really
[393]
interesting and sometime in 2019 i
[397]
noticed that the flavor profile of beera
[400]
changed slightly maybe it was just me
[402]
but i felt it changed slightly and i did
[404]
not like it anymore and i stopped buying
[406]
beera completely
[407]
and in 2020
[410]
i discovered a new beer
[412]
geist beer you know
[413]
and they had a brewery right next to my
[415]
house
[416]
and they start you know and they started
[418]
selling growlers you know two liter
[420]
growlers that you could take home and
[421]
drink so
[422]
so i completely stopped beera and
[425]
shifted to uh shifted to uh guys beer
[430]
and in january of
[432]
2021 which is last year i stopped
[435]
drinking beer completely and now i drink
[437]
only fresh lime soda
[438]
but i still go to the liquor store every
[441]
now and then to pick up
[443]
new brands of beer or new brands of
[445]
alcohol to get my friends and family to
[448]
try them out
[452]
now let's look at what are some of the
[453]
key learnings about early adopters from
[456]
my own behavior here
[459]
the first one is that
[461]
just because i am
[462]
not an early adopter for tech for
[465]
technology did not mean that i was not
[467]
an early adopter for something else
[468]
which is beer in this case
[470]
and it probably also means that i could
[472]
be an early adopter for
[475]
other things which are similar to beer
[478]
so for example i when i go to a new
[480]
restaurant i would always order the most
[483]
exotic sounding item on the menu just to
[486]
you know just to try it out right now
[488]
what's what's to lose right
[491]
so early adopters you know tend to show
[493]
similar behavior in adjacent industries
[496]
or adjacent spaces
[499]
the second thing is that early adopters
[502]
love to take risks they don't mind
[504]
making few few mistakes but they don't
[507]
want to miss out on the next big thing
[510]
just like you know
[512]
while i was buying uh whole gardens at
[514]
the time i didn't mind picking up a
[516]
bottle of beera just to try it out and
[518]
if i liked it great if i didn't i didn't
[521]
lose much just one one beer that night
[523]
right so not a big deal
[525]
the third is early adopters love to show
[529]
off their new finds just like you know i
[531]
threw all those parties where the beer
[533]
being served was uh
[535]
beera you know they love to show off the
[537]
new finds and gives them a kick you know
[540]
they they want to be considered cool in
[542]
that space so it that is something you
[544]
know so you can rely on your early
[547]
adopters
[548]
for word of mouth
[551]
the fourth thing is that
[554]
you know early adopters need not stay
[556]
loyal with you
[558]
just like they tried
[560]
you and you know loved you does not mean
[562]
that they will stay with you forever
[564]
just like i tried you know even though i
[566]
was buying beera regularly i kept trying
[570]
other uh other brands on the side and at
[573]
the drop of a hat or you know or a
[575]
perceived change in flavor i completely
[577]
shifted from beera and went on to the
[579]
next cool thing which was geist
[582]
right so
[583]
so don't expect your
[586]
early adopters to be with you forever
[588]
what you need to do is you know move on
[590]
from early adopters to the early
[591]
majority and the late majority because
[594]
they're more likely to be loyal and stay
[596]
with you early adopters keep
[598]
moving on to the next big thing
[602]
now let's look at what are some of the
[604]
things that beera did really well from
[606]
an execution perspective i think the
[608]
first is that they nailed their early
[612]
adopters really well
[615]
they figured that you know they wanted
[617]
to target people who had moved on from
[619]
kingfisher already they didn't like
[620]
kingfisher but had moved on from
[622]
kingfisher and those people were likely
[624]
drinking imported beer
[625]
and these people did not mind paying a
[627]
premium you know they were paying four
[629]
times the price of a
[631]
so that's the people they were targeting
[633]
and that's why they placed their beers
[635]
in liquor stores right next to the
[637]
imported ones uh especially with beera
[640]
white which is a wheat beer they were
[642]
targeting uh wheat beer lovers
[645]
and that's why they kept it right next
[647]
to whole garden and it got picked up
[649]
right
[650]
the second thing they did really well
[652]
was ensuring the quality of the product
[655]
uh the beer at the time was top notch
[658]
and
[659]
the early adopters like myself were
[661]
really happy with it that we continued
[663]
to buy it and spread the word
[666]
uh so they ensured that the quality of
[668]
product was top notch
[671]
and the third thing that they did really
[673]
well was that once demand picked up they
[676]
moved their operations or they moved
[678]
their manufacturing operations from
[679]
belgium to india so when they started
[682]
operations they'd set up a factory they
[684]
probably outsourced a factory in belgium
[687]
and then they were importing beer into
[689]
india this resulted in a higher cost due
[691]
to primarily transportation and taxation
[694]
but once they validated demand that this
[696]
beer would sell in india
[698]
they set up a manufacturing implant in
[700]
india which helped them reduce cost
[703]
drastically and compete with kingfisher
[706]
and today
[707]
beera is probably the brand that can
[710]
take on kingfisher in the medium term in
[712]
india
[714]
regardless of whether you're working on
[716]
a new product or working on a new
[718]
feature on an existing product to take
[720]
it to a new market
[722]
it is really critical to
[724]
nail your early adopters and target them
[726]
really well
[728]
and if you want to bounce off ideas give
[729]
me a shout and let's chat over a fresh
[732]
lime soda
[739]
and if you have an interesting story
[741]
about early adopters let me know i would
[743]
love to chat with you and find out and
[745]
possibly even interview in one of the
[747]
upcoming videos
[749]
if you found this video insightful do
[751]
give it a like
[752]
thank you for watching
[758]
