Open P&L (Profit And Loss) - What is it and why do you need it? - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
When trading you will see the term
[2]
Open P&L, which means
[4]
open profit and loss.
[6]
But what exactly does this mean?
[8]
And should you pay attention
[10]
to it?
[11]
Why do you need this?
[12]
That's what we are going to talk
[14]
about in today's video.
[26]
So let's start with the definition
[28]
first.
[29]
What is Open P&L,
[31]
or the open profit and loss?
[33]
You see the Open P&L is the profit
[35]
or loss of your position at the
[37]
current market price.
[39]
As the market price of your position
[41]
changes, your Open P&L will
[43]
change. It is not unusual
[45]
that your Open P&L can change by
[47]
several hundred, or even
[49]
several thousand dollars throughout
[50]
the day.
[52]
Here's an example.
[53]
So let's say you bought a stock for
[55]
$100, and the current price of
[57]
the stock is $105.
[59]
This means that you have an open
[61]
profit of
[63]
$5.
[64]
Now if the price of the stock drops
[66]
to $98 and you bought
[68]
it for $100, you're open P&L
[70]
will be a
[72]
negative of $2.
[73]
Now here's an example of the open
[75]
profit and loss for a particular
[77]
day.
[78]
So why do you need the Open P&L?
[80]
You see, the Open P&L gives you a
[82]
quick overview of the value
[84]
of your current open positions
[86]
in your portfolio.
[87]
And open positions can be
[89]
stocks, or options, or
[91]
Forex, it doesn't really matter,
[93]
right? So you will see very quickly
[95]
whether your current positions are
[97]
making you money, or
[99]
whether you're losing money.
[100]
But the Open P&L is
[102]
very misleading because
[104]
as long as the trade is open
[106]
it will change.
[108]
Only when you close the trade
[110]
you will know how much money you
[111]
made or lost.
[113]
So should you pay attention
[116]
to the Open P&L?
[117]
Let me explain it this way.
[119]
You see, both of my kids are
[121]
sailors, and here's how a sailing
[123]
regatta works.
[124]
A regatta is usually 2 to 4
[126]
days, and each day there
[128]
are several races.
[129]
And typically they're 3 to 5
[131]
races per day.
[132]
So this means that some regattas
[134]
have 6 races, while
[136]
other regattas can have 10 to 12
[138]
races. Now, the winner
[140]
of the regatta is the sailor with
[142]
the lowest score.
[143]
For example, if you
[145]
have a 1-1-1-1,
[147]
which means that you won 4 races,
[150]
you have a score of 4.
[152]
So, while the regatta is
[153]
going on and the sailors are
[155]
completing races, the score
[157]
changes all the time.
[159]
By the way, here's a picture
[161]
of my daughter Vivian during a
[163]
National Sailing Regatta in Buzzards
[165]
Bay. Pretty cool, huh?
[167]
Anyhow, here's an example.
[170]
Right now, my son Julius is
[172]
competing in The Chubb U.S.
[173]
Junior Championship and that's a
[175]
pretty cool National Sailing
[177]
Regatta.
[178]
As I'm recording this video,
[180]
they completed 4
[182]
out of the 9 or 10 races
[184]
that they will do.
[185]
And right now, Julius and his
[187]
skipper Lucy are in 6th
[189]
place.
[190]
But this will change.
[192]
By the end of the regatta they might
[194]
move up to the 3rd place, or
[196]
they could even drop to the 10th
[198]
place.
[199]
Almost everything is possible,
[201]
of course, it is fun watching
[202]
the results throughout the day, but
[204]
only at the end of the regatta,
[207]
we will know the final results.
[208]
And this is exactly like trading.
[211]
While you have an open position,
[212]
you can watch the Open Profit
[214]
and Loss all day long, but
[217]
it doesn't matter.
[219]
Only when you close the trade you
[221]
will know how much money you made
[223]
or lost.
[225]
Is this makes sense thus far?
[227]

[230]
because this way you are getting
[232]

[234]

[235]
So back to the Open P&L.
[237]
If you are watching the Open P&L
[239]
while you are in a trade it
[241]
will drive you crazy.
[244]
See I've been in trades that have
[246]
been losing for the first few days,
[248]
and then they turned around
[250]
and I was able to exit them with a
[251]
profit.
[252]
And I have had trades that took
[254]
off in the first few days and then
[256]
sharply turned around and I
[258]
exited them with a loss.
[259]
Long story short, don't
[262]
celebrate open profits
[264]
and don't get upset about open
[266]
losses because trades
[268]
can turn around quickly.
[270]
You see in the sailing example,
[273]
being in number 6 out of
[275]
20 boats in this National
[277]
Championship is a big deal
[279]
because sailors from all over the
[280]
country had to qualify
[282]
through another regatta to be able
[284]
to participate here.
[285]
So my son Julius and his
[287]
skipper Lucy are sailing against the
[289]
best sailors in the nation.
[291]
And today there will be another
[293]
3 or 4 races, and tomorrow
[295]
there will be another 2 or 3 races,
[297]
and then
[299]
I can take a look at the score.
[300]
Looking at the scores during the
[302]
regatta is like looking at the Open
[304]
P&L of your trades.
[305]
It's fun and entertaining,
[308]
but it doesn't matter.
[310]
