[0]
yes now its Fred right he is the
[2]
legislative lead for the Miami chapter
[4]
of moms demand action for gun sense he's
[6]
also a survivor fellow with Everytown
[9]
for gun safety and fred has been a
[10]
crusader for gun control since the death
[13]
of his son jerry in the pulse attack
[15]
back in 2016 sir we're so sorry for your
[17]
loss thank you for being here thank you
[19]
very much again thank you for having us
[21]
here so since the start of the year
[23]
there have been 107 reported and
[25]
verified mass shootings in this country
[27]
what needs to happen for this violence
[29]
to stop we need to keep the guns away
[32]
from violent people it's not enough to
[36]
thoughts and prayers from from our
[39]
politicians we need to change the laws
[43]
so that we make sure that those guns
[46]
don't fall in the wrong hands that is
[48]
the first thing we need to do we need to
[50]
pass background checks for every single
[52]
gun sale right now only the registered
[56]
dealers are the ones that require
[59]
background check but everywhere else in
[61]
a gun show and and in in the internet
[65]
private sales they do not require
[67]
background check in this country and we
[69]
have to pass that legislation so that we
[72]
keep those guns away from dangerous
[73]
people that is the first thing we need
[75]
to do new gun laws were passed in
[77]
Tallahassee for the first time yes aids
[79]
the president recently announced he's
[81]
going to issue an executive order that
[83]
will ban bumped stocks which is the type
[85]
of device that was used in Las Vegas how
[87]
do you rate lawmakers both here in
[90]
Florida and and in Washington on their
[93]
response to these mass shootings in in
[95]
Florida we were and I'm very thankful to
[98]
the legislators for passing the bill 70
[103]
26 it was a big step forward and
[106]
happened right after Parkland and it was
[109]
it was great that it did pass but we
[111]
need to do more we need to do more that
[114]
law has some really good red flag lost
[118]
within it too that means that if
[120]
somebody is thinking of doing something
[123]
and he says going to be dangerous police
[127]
can intervene and that is a really good
[130]
the law in Florida is very good but we
[132]
need to do the same
[132]
thing in Texas Texas needs to have a red
[135]
flag law and you know for mr. Trump and
[138]
his administration we would love to see
[141]
changes in the national flag laws and we
[145]
definitely need background checks for
[147]
all gun sales in the other national
[149]
level that is the way we'll keep guns
[151]
away from dangerous people and that's we
[153]
were the way that we can keep keepers
[155]
most more out secure your son Jerry grew
[158]
up here in South Florida he did and was
[161]
working in Orlando at Disney yes I can
[164]
relate to that I have a daughter who
[166]
grew up here and lives in Orlando
[168]
after the pulse nightclub killing what
[171]
50 people died at 49% last shooter there
[175]
were no changes after parkland the state
[178]
legislature did make some changes that
[180]
part of you feel like the victims and
[182]
pulse were sort of forgotten I don't
[185]
think they were forgotten I think the
[187]
the movement of the students after
[188]
Parkland was great because they they got
[192]
got on it you know of the families of
[196]
polls we were one of the few that really
[199]
got our voices out there was others as
[201]
well but but I don't think we got our
[204]
message across it was not that that I
[208]
would say that the legislators and and
[211]
the lawmakers did not give us that that
[215]
much of an importance now after parkland
[218]
with the students and their voices and
[220]
they got so active people started
[223]
listening and that was great for for the
[225]
movement we talked about these young
[227]
people I don't know if you saw yesterday
[229]
at the press briefing press secretary
[231]
Sir Huckabee Sanders actually tearing up
[233]
when there was a young reporter a time
[236]
children reporter asking her about my
[238]
soldier on how to secure schools and
[240]
then we're also talking about the
[241]
Parkland students are these the new
[243]
voices of change are these going to be
[245]
that the messengers have changed these
[246]
young people yes they are I think I
[248]
think it's gonna be make a big
[250]
difference they're gonna start voting
[252]
once they become 18 to start voting and
[254]
they're gonna make a difference they're
[256]
gonna make a huge difference because I
[258]
think what's what's uh what's going to
[261]
come out loud and clear is that we need
[263]
change and we the
[266]
students as well as all this movement
[268]
that we have with mum some an action and
[270]
with every town we're getting to to
[273]
lawmakers and we're know that we're
[275]
going to make the change in the DISA
[277]
lection is gonna be big big difference
[279]
last question for you sir because we
[281]
live in a state we live in a country
[283]
where guns are a part of the culture in
[285]
there yes the vast majority of gun
[287]
owners are law-abiding citizens correct
[289]
who are disgusted as much as anybody
[292]
else to see these school shootings what
[293]
do you say to those people who feel like
[296]
the movements that you are a part of
[298]
that the Parkland kids are a part of is
[300]
really an effort to get rid of their
[302]
guns to have the government take their
[303]
guns away nobody is trying to take
[305]
law-abiding citizens guns away from from
[308]
them we are not we support the Second
[310]
Amendment we support the right of
[312]
law-abiding citizens from having having
[316]
guns we support that but you know the
[318]
Second Amendment comes with
[319]
responsibility we cannot just give guns
[322]
to people that are dangerous and that is
[324]
what we are all about we want to reduce
[327]
gun violence we are about gun violence
[329]
prevention okay and so so it's for all
[332]
body citizens this should be able to buy
[334]
guns that is not the problem here the
[337]
problem is that we are allowing by just
[339]
letting the people get guns we're lying
[342]
dangerous people to get them as well we
[344]
need to stop that we have very little
[346]
time but very quickly can you tell us
[348]
about the plans this weekend for moms
[350]
demand action holding a wear orange
[352]
event
[352]
thank you yes we have a wear orange
[355]
event this Saturday June 1st tomorrow
[358]
marks the gun violence awards day and it
[362]
started with a movement with a Hadiya
[364]
Pendleton when she was shot and killed
[365]
her friends started this movement about
[369]
we're orange and so that's that's what
[372]
we were going to be celebrating the
[374]
lives of the 96 people that we lose
[376]
every single day through gun violence
[378]
the price right thank you so much for
[380]
sharing your story with us thank you
