How I paid my 1 Crore Tuition Fee? Middle Class Student Story! - YouTube

Channel: Singh in USA

[0]
So hello everyone.
[1]
Today I am going to take you on a big adventure.
[5]
I'll be sharing my four years of journey.
[8]
How I was able to afford my 1 crore tuition fee
[11]
and how I paid most of the tuition fee by myself
[14]
starting from my second year.
[16]
And how I made it possible even with the inflation on rate.
[18]
You can take a look at my I-20.
[20]
My tuition fee in the first year was 35k dollars.
[23]
And 48k dollars till the last year.
[25]
So how I was able to beat inflation?
[26]
Even though my tuition fee kept increasing
[29]
but still I was able to pay it on my own.
[31]
So let's get started.
[33]
So let's start the journey
[35]
before my first year of college.
[36]
I just have one request.
[38]
Please do check out my four years of college
[39]
in four minutes, so that you understand things.
[42]
Regarding my family background,
[43]
my mom was a retired doctor
[45]
because of her illness.
[46]
And my Nani was retired principal
[49]
due to whom I could actually come.
[51]
I could actually come due to both of their savings.
[54]
So basically the journey in 11th and 12th
[57]
I had only one goal - to do well in JEE Mains,
[60]
Advanced and Boards.
[61]
There was only a single target.
[62]
But luckily, or unluckily for my parents-
[65]
when they got the shock of the tuition fee-
[67]
so unluckily for my parents, luckily for me
[70]
I got to know from my school, I was in the-
[73]
one of the best schools of Amritsar,
[74]
Spring Dale Senior School, from there I got to know
[77]
that I can go abroad
[78]
The road that I had never seen in my mind,
[82]
that opened in some way- that's how I felt.
[84]
Because in our school, many people
[87]
from Universities like University of Waterloo, University of Toronto-
[91]
not from big schools but from many Universities of Canada
[94]
people were coming for promotion
[96]
to attract students to Canada.
[98]
Since it was Punjab so there were more promotions from Canada basically.
[102]
So that's why I knew that it is an option
[104]
but the road to US hadn't opened yet.
[106]
But one day there was an event of college board.
[108]
I was in my 11th grade- end of 11th grade
[110]
If it was in the starting of 11th, things could have been different.
[113]
But till 11th, I was only preparing for JEE Mains.
[115]
That event acknowledged me. The road to US opened.
[117]
And the main reason this door opened
[119]
because I always wanted to do Computer Science in college
[121]
I knew that if I go outside, I could get CS if I wish to.
[124]
Maybe I won't get it in India.
[126]
That's why I was certain and this is how I convinced my parents.
[130]
Took my ACT, SAT.
[131]
Got 27 in ACT.
[133]
That was decent.
[134]
Started applying.
[135]
And you can say this was a privilege or
[138]
some advantage I had.
[139]
My uncle and aunt were here
[141]
so Georgia somehow became a preference.
[143]
Not because I had a preference.
[145]
Because my Nani we more satisfied, more happy
[148]
to let me come to Georgia.
[149]
So that's why I applied to Georgia State University, Georgia Tech,
[152]
four more schools all over the US
[154]
but my score in ACT wasn't that good
[156]
And I never used to get good marks in English
[158]
So that's why I couldn't perform well in reading
[160]
of ACT and SAT.
[161]
So that's why I could get into only one school
[163]
in the US.
[164]
And from there my journey of undergrad started.
[166]
Now, the first year tuition fee was 35k dollars.
[169]
Now you will ask how I got scholarship.
[171]
I used to read stories daily through the Great Indian Dream group.
[174]
There's a Facebook group called the Great Indian Dream Group
[177]
where I used to read stories daily.
[179]
This guy got accepted in University of Michigan
[181]
What was the score? What was the process?
[182]
This guy got accepted in GaTech? What was the score and process?
[185]
By reading those stories- One story of GSU popped in as well.
[188]
I knew that if I go here
[190]
not just scholarship
[192]
but I will also get a good opportunity to be in a Tech city.
[195]
For example, if you get accepted by two schools,
[198]
one, whose ranking is very good.
[200]
It's a great University but the location isn't that great.
[203]
But in some other school where you can get a scholarship
[206]
the location is great as well
[207]
and the fee is less
[208]
what would you choose?
[209]
I obviously chose this
[211]
Atlanta city
[212]
where I got a great exposure to the Tech world.
[215]
And the fees wasn't much.
[216]
Now, the fees- it was still high- 35k dollars.
[219]
I convinced my parents because I promised them
[221]
in the first year you give me 25 lac Rupees
[223]
because the dollar rate at that time was around 70.
[225]
And I will handle it myself later onwards.
[227]
Now, let's talk about how I managed
[229]
from my first year.
[231]
So I entered in my first year,
[232]
I had two priorities.
[233]
Number one, on-campus job,
[235]
number 2, to get scholarship from my second year.
[238]
That was pretty much guaranteed if you get
[240]
a GPA above 3.5
[241]
which I got- that's a later story.
[243]
But let's first start about on-campus job.
[245]
My best friend Naman told me that
[248]
there was an availability in dining hall. Why not try it out?
[251]
But there, the availability was only of late hours.
[253]
From 12 am in the night to 3 am in the morning
[256]
these were the only shifts.
[257]
I tried, I gave my shot
[259]
worked for a week
[260]
but luckily I got a job at a math tutoring centre.
[263]
I used to get 8.5 dollars an hour there as well.
[265]
I used to get same money on both places.
[267]
In one place for lifting tables, cleaning the dishes
[270]
and in the other place for teaching.
[272]
Which one will I choose?
[273]
I definitely chose the tutoring job
[275]
where I got to learn many things.
[277]
And I was able to make 400 to 500 dollars per month
[280]
from which I could only manage little expenses.
[282]
Because my dorm fee was 700 and around 200 for food.
[287]
900 dollars were my monthly expenses in 2016.
[292]
And the tuition fee was another thing.
[293]
So I didn't manage everything alone.
[295]
But I kept managing with the money that used to come from India.
[299]
Then came almost the end of first year.
[302]
Then I decided that this is do or die situation now.
[306]
I have to either learn or die!
[307]
I explored all options.
[309]
I did courses on Android all over Coursera an Udemy and stuff.
[312]
Applied for internships everywhere.
[314]
And luckily after 20 applications
[317]
I got an internship at one place
[319]
where I got my first full time internship salary
[323]
by which I got around 10k dollars plus
[325]
in my summer semester,
[326]
because when you study in the US for a year,
[329]
you can do full time internship anywhere in the campus-
[332]
off campus as well.
[333]
But that should be related to your major.
[335]
For example, I was a CS major and I could do software engineering,
[338]
systems engineering internship
[340]
by which I got help for my next year tuition.
[343]
Now let's talk about my next year tuition fee.
[346]
Now, in my second year, as I told you that you can get scholarship in GSU
[349]
So my GPA was good
[350]
and I got campus Atlanta scholarship
[352]
which was 100 percent out of state waiver.
[355]
Which means, my tuition fee reduced from 35k dollars to 5.5k dollars.
[362]
It was 7000 actually, I saved money in health insurance as well
[364]
because I bought health insurance from outside of the University
[368]
by which I could save 1500 dollars
[369]
So that's why it was 5500 dollars.
[371]
So through this, all the money I earned from my internship,
[377]
from that I paid 5500 dollars for my first tuition fee.
[380]
Now, there was another twist in my second year.
[383]
Because I performed well in my internship, I got part-time offer.
[388]
I told that I did internship in the 10th floor of GaTech's 75th building
[393]
if you remember.
[394]
I worked part-time there for 20 hours a week.
[398]
I used to earn decent money too.
[400]
I used to get around 1200 to 1400 dollars per month.
[403]
So you think, the student whose expenses were 1000 before
[406]
I started getting more income than my expenses.
[410]
And I paid my tuition fee as well.
[412]
So that was a magical thing that happened to me.
[414]
So I kept paying my tuition fee for my second year
[417]
and also my housing expenses.
[419]
Now there was another change.
[420]
My housing wasn't on-campus.
[422]
It was off-campus. I was paying only 300 to 400 dollars
[425]
because I was in a living room.
[427]
I have learned a very big lesson from rich dad poor dad.
[431]
That's an amazing book if you haven't read it.
[433]
Please read it.
[434]
It was written there that always keep
[436]
your assets high and minimise your liabilities.
[438]
I knew housing was a liability.
[440]
So I chose a house next to a library
[442]
even though the standard of living was pretty low
[444]
I can visit the library in 5 minutes.
[446]
Either to study or to start my YouTube channel.
[449]
And YouTube helped me a lot as well.
[451]
So now, since my expenses were so low,
[453]
and income was high, my savings kept increasing.
[456]
So I paid my second year's second tuition fee.
[459]
Because as I told you I earned 10k dollars.
[461]
So easily I could pay the next semester tuition fee.
[463]
And my savings increased as well.
[465]
Now let's talk about third year.
[467]
Now there was a big twist in my third year.
[469]
Even though as you know, in tech you get the most salary.
[472]
If you are doing internship, full-time job
[474]
you get so much money that you can pay your fees easily.
[477]
But it was very very hectic.
[478]
I realised that I want a change in life.
[481]
I want to do more than excel sheets.
[484]
Since I was a systems engineer,
[485]
so I was working a lot on Excel sheets.
[487]
So that's why I wanted to find a software engineering internship.
[490]
So I thought, "Let's quit it."
[492]
Because if I don't switch my job today
[494]
then I will come in my comfort zone and I will not able to do it later.
[497]
So I left my internship
[499]
left Panasonic automotive,
[500]
and I got into the preparation of placements as a software engineer.
[505]
I tried each type of projects.
[506]
Blockchain, Android development- couldn't do iOS- I didn't have a MacBook
[510]
and I tried other things like Java, C#
[515]
to see which I like and I liked Android the most.
[517]
I learned Android nicely.
[519]
Since I learned a little android in Panasonic,
[522]
I took a side project there.
[524]
So that's why I was able to find my next internship at NCR.
[527]
I was benefited a lot.
[529]
And that's how I switched my job.
[531]
But my income decreased.
[533]
I allowed my income to decrease.
[534]
I did a sacrifice because I wanted to find a better job
[538]
And now in third year, my main source of income
[540]
was not internship but part time jobs.
[543]
If you have seen my four years of college income,
[546]
then you will get to know about my whole income.
[548]
So basically I chose part-time job because I
[550]
had to find a better placement.
[552]
Now why did I do part-time jobs in CS? Because
[555]
I had done well in my Basic CS class
[558]
I got A grades in Java, Python or Data structures.
[563]
You get opportunity to teach juniors
[566]
or the ones in their first year
[567]
I was in third year, so I taught first year students.
[570]
I got around 600-700 dollars there.
[573]
My salary reduced to half
[576]
but I got the time to prepare for placements.
[579]
And now again, because of lower expenses-
[581]
my food expenses was also less because of WhatsApp group free food
[585]
And my housing expenses were also less.
[588]
And my savings were more which is why
[590]
I was able to pay my third year tuition fee as well
[592]
And with the blink of an eye, third year was over.
[596]
And in fourth year, I was actually doing my masters
[598]
because I only did my undergrad till my third year
[601]
but I felt like I am missing something. I want to learn more.
[604]
So I applied for my masters in my fourth year.
[606]
I got fully funded masters.
[608]
And I completed my masters in an year where I didn't need
[610]
to worry about tuition fee once again.
[613]
Because I used to get stipend
[614]
and the university used to pay my tuition fee as well.
[616]
And now let me tell you the key lessons that I learned in my four years,
[620]
by which I paid my tuition fee
[621]
and by which you can pay yours as well.
[624]
Number one lesson, you can always sacrifice on standard of living.
[627]
And you can always find high paying internship jobs.
[631]
You know that you can get huge signing bonuses from big companies
[636]
that can easily pay not just one year
[638]
but also like 2 years of tuition fee.
[640]
I have seen that a company-
[643]
since he negotiated-
[646]
gave my friend a signing bonus of around 20k dollars.
[648]
So that's why your goal should be to find high paying internships
[651]
and if your standard of living decreases a bit
[654]
it won't matter because if
[656]
you are saving some money,
[657]
that can be more worth in the long run.
[660]
Now, number two thing that I did was
[662]
always use my credit card the most.
[664]
There won't be any sponsor here.
[666]
Be aware.
[667]
I have always bought things at 0% interest from my Amazon and Apple card
[672]
by which I didn't need to worry much about payment.
[675]
Like for example,
[676]
even now I have bought my iPhone
[678]
with my Apple card with in 20 dollars/month with 0% EMI and 3% cashback.
[683]
So I don't have to worry about anything.
[686]
So that's why I only spend 20 dollars a month even though this iPhone is 1k dollars.
[691]
So this idea worked a lot.
[693]
And next thing that was very very helpful was, I tried multiple things.
[696]
I taught students, I explored every possible option.
[699]
I started my YouTube channel.
[700]
It changed me financially and my overall personality.
[707]
I also learned many kind of technologies.
[710]
Blockchain, Android development
[712]
I attended 17 Hackathons.
[715]
I taught so many students and I still think, as Sandeep Maheshwari said
[719]
to teach is to learn twice.
[721]
It was actually true for me.
[722]
After teaching so many concepts regularly,
[725]
I got so clear that at the end of the day, I wanted to be
[729]
and Android or Mobile app developer in the end
[731]
because I realised after teaching so many people
[734]
that this is something I enjoy.
[736]
I can talk about this as much as I want.
[738]
So these things did help me a lot.
[740]
And now the most important financial lesson
[742]
is about investing.
[744]
Now you will say, "I don't have tuition fee for my next semester.
[747]
How will I invest?"
[748]
The reality is, if you earn decent amount of money in your internship,
[751]
for example, I made 10k dollars.
[753]
5000 - I paid my tuition fee.
[754]
What will I do with the rest 5000 dollars?
[756]
What I did was- There isn't good options like FDs here.
[759]
You can invest in mutual funds but that isn't safe.
[762]
Because what if
[764]
the index fund falls down when I have to pay my tuition fee?
[766]
What will I do?
[768]
So that's why I recently discovered
[770]
crypto.com's wallet
[771]
I won't advice you to invest in crypto
[774]
I am telling you to invest in stable coin in US dollars.
[778]
You will get upto 6% annual interest there.
[780]
So for example, I get 6.5% interest on Ethereum.
[784]
12.5% annual interest on Polkadot.
[787]
And you can get upto 12.5% on USDT, Tether stable coin.
[793]
Let me show you, I have so much crypto which is easily giving me 6-12%
[800]
You may not do in crypto
[801]
but if you want to consider, you can on US dollars.
[804]
Let me tell you, crypto's own coin has become so big
[807]
Crypto is actually the future. I have myself learnt blockchain.
[810]
Every investment isn't safe.
[811]
But if you are investing in US dollars,
[813]
if you are investing US dollars,
[815]
that is definitely safe.
[817]
And they haven't sponsored me at all. You will find the referral link
[820]
in the description below.
[821]
So that will be it. I hope you find this video helpful.
[823]
It's getting very cold here. I'll see you guys in the next one.
[827]
Goodbye!
