This is the Ice Genie. It's advertised as a sort of
[3]
As Seen on TV next gen ice cube maker,
[6]
but does it really work? That's what I'm gonna find out
[8]
in this review.
[9]
(techno music)
[16]
All right. Here's how the Ice Genie is supposed to work.
[18]
You've got two chambers here. You're gonna pour
[20]
the water in the outer chamber.
[22]
This prevents the ice from forming inside,
[25]
and then when it's done, you pull this out,
[28]
squeeze the sides, and you have ice.
[30]
They did point out with this cool tip
[33]
that the chamber's gonna be difficult to remove
[35]
in the first times, so let's try that.
[39]
Oh, they're not kidding.
[42]
(grunts)
[45]
Oh, man. They're not kidding. This thing is
[47]
stuck in here.
[49]
I'd love to use this if I could open it.
[52]
They're saying to twist it
[54]
counterclockwise.
[55]
Counterclockwise.
[57]
I'm getting some, I'm getting some motion here.
[59]
I think I'm making progress.
[60]
I've got a about a quarter of an inch.
[63]
Ah, there goes! There it goes!
[67]
Okay. So, as you can see, the ice cubes will be formed
[69]
in there.
[70]
And, then once you're done, you just squeeze it
[71]
and they're supposed to all come out in the chamber.
[73]
First, I'm gonna wash this, 'cause it
[75]
kind of has a plasticky smell to it. I'm gonna wash
[78]
this out first, and then try it.
[79]
All right. Time for our first test here.
[81]
You're supposed to insert the chamber into the unit itself,
[84]
and ensure that there's a good seal.
[86]
They say to feel around the bottom, make sure there's no gaps.
[89]
I don't feel any.
[91]
(grunts)
[91]
That feels good.
[92]
Now, we're supposed to pour water in here
[94]
to fill along the edges where the ice cubes are gonna be.
[97]
I'm going to use filtered water.
[100]
That didn't seem like a lot of water.
[101]
All right. I fill it all the way up. Now, I have to just put
[103]
the lid on it and put it in the freezer.
[106]
Okay. Lid's not,
[107]
not just snapping on in easily. It's,
[110]
I'm gonna have to finagle this lid on here.
[112]
I think that's almost it. No?
[116]
Okay. I got the lid on.
[119]
Now, I'm gonna gently put it in the freezer.
[122]
I've got in the freezer next to some standard ice cube trays.
[124]
Come back in a few hours and see how they compare.
[127]
All right. Here is the Ice Genie.
[128]
I put this in there yesterday,
[130]
so there should be no problem seeing these ice cubes
[132]
coming out. Let's check this out.
[134]
According to these instructions,
[138]
the first thing you're supposed to do is kind of
[139]
squeeze all the sides together,
[141]
pull out the chamber, and then squeeze the sides
[143]
together again.
[144]
Let's try it.
[145]
I'm squeezing pretty hard.
[146]
(crackling sound)
[147]
(grunts)
[148]
(crackling sound)
[149]
A lot of nice crackling sounds.
[151]
(crackling sound)
[154]
Well, what's, what I'm noticing is that there's no water
[156]
in there, so that's good. I was worried that it might
[158]
leak out in the center. It did not. Good thing.
[160]
(crackling sound)
[162]
(grunts)
[164]
(crackling sound)
[166]
I'm firmly squeezing.
[168]
(grunts)
[172]
Oh, this came out easier that-
[174]
I wouldn't say easy, but easier.
[177]
Now, here's what we got in there.
[180]
Kind of cool.
[181]
Now, what I'm supposed to do is squeeze it again.
[182]
(crackling sound)
[185]
I have ice flying everywhere.
[186]
(crackling sound)
[191]
Woah! One just flew out there.
[195]
(crackling sound)
[197]
So, let's see how much this actually made.
[201]
It's kind of hard to tell when it's in there.
[203]
(crackling sound)
[210]
All right. That's not really a lot of ice.
[213]
Not really.
[214]
(crackling sound)
[217]
What I'm gonna do now is make a second batch.
[219]
What we're supposed to do is put the chamber
[221]
back in there.
[222]
(crackling sound)
[223]
Kind of,
[224]
(crackling sound)
[225]
kind of jostle it around so it goes all the way down.
[228]
All right. I'm feeling around the bottom which isn't quite
[230]
as sanitary when I put my hand in there, but I don't feel
[232]
any kind of gap in the bottom, so I think I can go
[234]
for round two. Let's do that.
[237]
All right. I've got this full of water nor as you can see
[239]
from the sides.
[241]
And, I have my existing batch already in there.
[243]
We're gonna go for batch number two!
[246]
This lid doesn't seem to want to stay on too well,
[248]
but I guess that's good enough.
[250]
Batch number two. I'll check this in a few hours.
[253]
All right. Let's see how batch number two came out.
[255]
Okay. I'm not gonna dump this one out because last time
[257]
I think I lost a little bit of volume by pouring
[259]
on the plate, so I'm gonna do a third batch
[261]
without even dumping it out. I'm just gonna
[263]
add to the chamber, and keep going.
[266]
This, this can supposedly hold three batches.
[268]
I'm gonna do a total three batches.
[270]
(crackling sound)
[272]
You can head the crunching.
[273]
(crackling sound)
[275]
Just a lot of ice crunch.
[276]
It seems like a lot of work.
[278]
(crackling sound)
[281]
And, my hands are getting frozen by holding this.
[285]
And, it's stuck.
[286]
I actually can't get this off.
[287]
(crackling sound)
[290]
I'm gonna squeeze harder.
[291]
That's right.
[292]
(grunts)
[295]
There it goes. Okay. Perfect.
[299]
Oh, wow. Look at this.
[302]
It created like a-
[303]
The ice kind of melted and created like it's,
[306]
it's own bottom.
[307]
(crackling sound)
[313]
Once again, we have a pretty paltry amount of ice in there
[316]
from other batch.
[318]
(crackling sound)
[320]
And, I have to get that in there somehow.
[322]
(crackling sound)
[324]
All right. We're gonna go for batch number three.
[325]
This time I'm gonna measure how much water goes in there,
[327]
because I don't think it's very much.
[329]
(crackling sound)
[332]
And, you're supposed to stick your hand into the ice
[334]
through the ice
[335]
to see if there's a seal on the bottom
[337]
which again, I don't think that's very sanitary
[339]
but I'm gonna do it anyways.
[340]
I'll take this big chunk out.
[342]
(crackling sound)
[346]
Okay. I think there's a good seal on the bottom.
[349]
But, we're gonna go for batch number three.
[351]
I'm gonna measure the water on this time to see
[352]
how much it actually holds.
[354]
I've got 16oz of water here. I'm gonna put it in there
[356]
and see how much actually goes into the Ice Genie.
[362]
It doesn't seem like it's very much to me.
[366]
Okay.
[367]
That held.
[369]
That's about 6oz of water. That's not a lot of ice.
[372]
All right. This is the third batch. We're gonna compare this
[374]
to the three ice cube trays when it's done and see
[377]
how much that makes compared to traditional ice cub trays.
[379]
Not a fan of the lid. It keeps popping off, but we'll,
[382]
we'll deal with that later.
[383]
Ice Genie next to the Hot Pockets,
[385]
and the other ice cube trays.
[388]
Come back in a few hours and for the final comparison.
[390]
All right. I've got the third and final batch
[392]
with the Ice Genie, and I've got three standard
[394]
ice cube trays.
[396]
Now, I don't know if you'd consider this one or three batches.
[398]
Just for the benefit of the doubt, I'm gonna say
[400]
this is three batches.
[402]
But, normally I'd do this all at the same time.
[404]
But, so this is three batches.
[406]
And, this is three batches.
[408]
Let's compare how much it actually made.
[410]
(crackling sound)
[410]
Once again, you got to squeeze the edges of this.
[412]
(crackling sound)
[419]
And, then hope you can get it out.
[420]
(crackling sound)
[423]
I'm losing this battle now.
[424]
(crackling sound)
[427]
This is one problem with it is it seems to take
[428]
a lot of effort just to get this chamber out.
[431]
I mean ice cube trays are kind of a pain to get the ice up,
[434]
but this is more of a pain.
[435]
(crackling sound)
[437]
Now, there we go.
[440]
Once again, a kind of bottom has formed here
[442]
which I understand the first time because I dumped the ice out
[444]
and maybe started melting a little bit.
[445]
The second time, I didn't do that and this, it's still kind
[447]
of melted at the bottom which is kind of
[450]
not really desirable, 'cause then you have,
[451]
you have like a big one of these. You don't want that.
[454]
Let's get this third batch out of here.
[456]
(crackling sound)
[459]
This part's pretty cool. I do like this.
[460]
(crackling sound)
[462]
This is what they show in the commercial.
[463]
This is the cool part.
[465]
(crackling sound)
[468]
Let's dump it on a plate and see what we got.
[470]
(crackling sound)
[475]
All right. There we go. That is three- Woah!
[477]
That's three batches.
[479]
Now, three ice cube trays.
[481]
(crackling sound)
[482]
Well, that was quick.
[483]
(cracking sound)
[487]
(crackling sound)
[490]
(crackling sound)
[494]
A little easier.
[495]
Three Ice Genie batches. Three ice cube trays batches.
[502]
Yeah, the Ice Genie has a couple of these
[505]
which I'm not sure you really want,
[507]
but that's what we got.
[509]
Here's the ice cube size.
[514]
All right. What I'm gonna do now is measure one of these
[516]
ice cube trays.
[517]
Keep in mind, this took 6oz of water for one batch.
[520]
Let me see how the standard ice cube tray holds.
[524]
(pouring water sounds)
[529]
All right. So, this is about
[531]
10oz per ice cube tray
[534]
versus 6oz for the Ice Genie. And, you can do
[536]
multiple ice cube trays at once.
[538]
This, you can only do one at a time.
[540]
Here are my final observations about the Ice Genie.
[542]
Number one, it takes kind of a lot of effort to break
[545]
the ice apart so you can remove this chamber.
[547]
I think someone who has problems with strength in their hands
[550]
might struggle with this.
[552]
Number two, you only can put 6oz of water in here at a time.
[555]
So, I mean as compared to an ice cube tray
[557]
which is about 10oz in this case, it seems like you're
[560]
not really producing a lot of ice.
[563]
I think it works like advertised. The water did not leak
[566]
into the center chamber which that's a good thing.
[568]
It has a lid which I do like to keep all that freezer
[570]
nastiness off your ice, but we're only getting 6oz at a time
[574]
and you have to struggle to put the lid on.
[576]
I don't know. Kind of defeats the purpose.
[578]
So in the end, I'm not a big fan of the Ice Genie.
