is a firm a good investment we'll聽 tell you everything you need to know聽聽
[2]
in about five minutes my name is Brian聽 Feroldi and my name is Brian Stoffel聽聽
[10]
we recently did an hour-long deep dive into聽 a firm what does this company do the most聽聽
[15]
important thing to know about a firm is that they聽 are a buy now pay later company so you could go聽聽
[20]
to an e-commerce website buy something usually聽 that's relatively expensive and as you can see聽聽
[24]
they're choose to pay it off over 3 6 or 12 months聽 importantly a lot of these are zero interest loans聽聽
[29]
but it's important to point out that the company聽 really makes money in a couple different ways one聽聽
[33]
is through these buy now pay later transactions聽 but they also offer analytics to the merchants聽聽
[38]
themselves that help them increase their sales and聽 they do have some loans that they earn interest on聽聽
[43]
what i found interesting about this company聽 is that while buy now palliator is the primary聽聽
[47]
thing that it's known for there's more to this聽 company than just that feature so they also聽聽
[51]
offer a marketplace where big companies can go聽 to and market to affirms millions of customers聽聽
[56]
they've been rolling out new products as well聽 like a debit card and that debit card increases聽聽
[61]
the stickiness of a firm's products they also聽 recently rolled out a rewards program that聽聽
[66]
merchants can sign up to in order to incentivize聽 more purchases on their platform and while it's聽聽
[70]
not available yet the company does plan on rolling聽 out a cryptocurrency platform very soon if you聽聽
[75]
look at the numbers a firm has been growing聽 really fast gross merchandise volume or the聽聽
[79]
value of all the things that are being bought聽 using a firm is growing at about 78 per year then聽聽
[84]
if you go all the way over to the right because聽 it's a clear indication of how the company is聽聽
[87]
doing when you take all their revenue and subtract聽 out the transaction costs that are part of the聽聽
[92]
business model their revenue is growing at an聽 astounding 182 percent per year over the last聽聽
[97]
two to three years so what's the bold case for聽 investors moving forward well number one the聽聽
[101]
growth here has been incredible and there's plenty聽 of signs that buy now pay later trend is still聽聽
[106]
in its infancy number two it's clear that in north聽 america at least the brand that a firm has built聽聽
[112]
is very recognizable that's important but also the聽 network effect is starting to take shape as more聽聽
[118]
people use a firm more merchants are motivated to聽 accept a firm which only draws in more users and聽聽
[124]
it is a virtuous cycle that continues to compound聽 upon itself third the founder ceo is exactly the聽聽
[130]
type of person you want to bet on max levchin not聽 only owns a lot of stock not only has made a firm聽聽
[136]
a great place to work but he was also one of the聽 co-founders of paypal this isn't his first time聽聽
[140]
being involved in a high growth company focused聽 on fintech so that is wonderful to see if you're聽聽
[144]
an investor but let's dig into what the bear case聽 is here as well the first thing that we need to聽聽
[148]
know about is concentration risk historically聽 peloton has accounted for a rather large chunk聽聽
[154]
of the transactions that take place using a firm聽 that's come down a bit but it's also important to聽聽
[158]
note that the company announced a partnership聽 with amazon while that is very exciting that聽聽
[163]
partnership hasn't started yet and once it does聽 it's possible that business is so big with amazon聽聽
[168]
that that emerges as a concentration risk moving聽 forward two we don't really have a true sense of聽聽
[173]
what delinquency rates would be this company聽 was only founded a few years ago and it only聽聽
[178]
has gone through the covet 19 recession during聽 that time period the government was handing out聽聽
[182]
stimulus checks like crazy so it's possible that聽 the company's historic delinquent rate might not聽聽
[186]
be an accurate representation of what happens聽 to this company when the economy takes a turn聽聽
[190]
for the worse and finally while it's clear that聽 a firm is the leader in north america this is a聽聽
[195]
very popular trend in a very crowded space聽 globally and so it remains to be seen what's going聽聽
[201]
to happen when a firm bumps up against some of the聽 other competitors that are located in different聽聽
[206]
geographies before we get to the final scores聽 we wanted to give a shout out to motley fool's聽聽
[209]
flagship stock advisor service stock advisors聽 picks have absolutely smashed the returns of the s聽聽
[214]
p 500 for nearly two decades both brian and i were聽 paying members of stock advisors for years before聽聽
[220]
we became contractors for them and we're both huge聽 advocates of the service if you want to give stock聽聽
[224]
advisor a try at a fifty percent discount visit聽 fool.com slash feraldi that's fool.com for all the聽聽
[231]
all right let's see how this company scored on our聽 checklists on my checklist this company got a 63聽聽
[236]
which is in my why bother category now importantly聽 my checklist punishes companies that are new to聽聽
[241]
the public markets as a firm in and while i think聽 that the potential is there the management team聽聽
[246]
is excellent and the moat is certainly there the聽 company is nowhere close to producing free cash聽聽
[250]
flow or profits and that's one big reason聽 why i didn't score as well in my checklist聽聽
[254]
my checklist doesn't penalize companies the same聽 way yours does that being said that eight and聽聽
[258]
a half could have been a lot higher if it wasn't聽 for the concentration risk and those same balance聽聽
[263]
sheet risks that have me a little bit concerned聽 as well so what should investors watch moving聽聽
[267]
forward first thing they should keep an eye on is聽 delinquency rates historically the firm's numbers聽聽
[271]
have performed very well and its consumers have聽 almost always repaid their loans but we don't know聽聽
[276]
if that trend is going to continue indefinitely聽 it will be especially telling to see what happens聽聽
[280]
to this company's numbers once a real recession聽 hits second we want to see how well those new聽聽
[285]
products are taken up the marketplace the rewards聽 program the crypto platform if those can catch on聽聽
[290]
that would be really positive for the company聽 in terms of making its products even stickier聽聽
[295]
third keep an eye on the bottom line we want to聽 see this company eventually generate free cash聽聽
[299]
flow and net income while that's still likely聽 to be a few years out if the company can get聽聽
[304]
there its score on my checklist will jump聽 substantially overall i think that both you聽聽
[308]
and i were more impressed with the firm than we聽 thought at the beginning and if you want to watch聽聽
