[11]
hi welcome to another cold fusion video
[15]
previously in the last episode of the
[17]
story of sony we saw how they went from
[19]
a failing company making rice cookers
[21]
and electric blankets
[22]
to an innovative group of engineers who
[24]
influenced american society
[26]
with their breakthrough portable radio
[28]
today we'll continue the story from 1960
[30]
with a timeline of sony's global rise
[32]
let's begin in 1960
[36]
sony would expand into the united states
[38]
with the formation of sony corporation
[41]
america
[42]
shortly after this using the transistor
[45]
technology that they had perfected five
[46]
years earlier
[47]
sony would create the first transistor
[49]
television for context
[51]
tvs of the time were still huge because
[53]
they were using massive bulky vacuum
[55]
tubes to power them
[56]
so sony's model was a revolution much
[59]
smaller than anything that had ever come
[60]
before
[63]
in 1968 sony would release their
[65]
triniton tvs
[66]
it had twice the brightness of regular
[68]
tvs for the day and was the greatest tv
[71]
product series of the entire century
[73]
these trinitan televisions were known
[75]
for their great quality
[86]
[Music]
[98]
oh
[100]
the triniton tv system was so good that
[103]
it supported sony's growth for the 30
[105]
years after its launch in 1968.
[107]
before this all japanese products were
[109]
seen as cheap and of low quality
[112]
sony's color tvs changed the perception
[114]
of japanese products
[120]
1975 saw the release of sony's beta max
[122]
home video tape format
[124]
and camcorder the betamax tape system
[126]
was far superior to jvc's vhs release
[129]
later that year
[130]
but it ultimately failed as it had less
[132]
tape running time and was more expensive
[136]
in 1978 a sony executive would take a
[139]
trip to europe to see a spin-off
[140]
technology of the philips laserdisc that
[142]
could play audio
[144]
philips and sony already had a healthy
[146]
relationship since the late 60s and
[148]
decided to pair up
[150]
phillips was a world leader in optical
[151]
video discs and sony had considerable
[153]
expertise in digital audio signal
[155]
processing technology
[158]
when the two companies joined forces
[160]
they would create the digital audio disk
[162]
now known as the compact disc it would
[164]
be released in 1982
[168]
in july of 1979 sonia releases the first
[171]
stereo cassette player
[172]
called the walkerman he is considered
[175]
one of the most iconic music players and
[177]
has sold
[177]
over 400 million units of course there
[180]
were portable music players before the
[182]
walkman but sony's was the first that
[184]
was easy to use
[185]
and convenient
[189]
you really feel the music the sony
[193]
walkman
[194]
is a tiny stereo cassette player with
[196]
truly
[197]
incredible sound
[198]
[Music]
[203]
put on a walkman and see the world in a
[206]
whole new light
[207]
[Music]
[208]
the sony walkman ushered in the
[210]
company's golden age
[212]
it created a brand new culture of
[213]
listening to your own personal music
[216]
outside
[221]
in late 1982 the first cd player was
[224]
introduced to the world by sony
[226]
and just two years later in 1984 they
[228]
would create a portable version
[230]
it was called the disman sony were on
[233]
fire by this stage and according to
[235]
cultural critic
[236]
stephen bailey in this period sony was
[238]
the apple of its day
[239]
and much more by the end of 1988 sony
[243]
had acquired cbs records for two billion
[245]
dollars and renamed it sony music
[247]
entertainment
[248]
and also columbia pictures entertainment
[255]
1993 would be a year that would change
[257]
the gaming landscape forever
[259]
in november of this year sony computer
[261]
entertainment was established
[263]
and one year later the sony playstation
[265]
was released
[266]
it was the first video game console to
[268]
ship more than 100 million units
[274]
the year 2000 kicked off with the
[275]
release of the sony playstation 2.
[277]
it went on to become the best selling
[279]
home console of all time the next year
[282]
sony would establish its own bank
[284]
and sony ericsson mobile now known as
[286]
sony mobile
[288]
2004 saw the release of the psp to
[290]
compete with the nintendo ds
[292]
and the playstation 3 would come two
[294]
years later in 2007
[296]
sony would innovate yet another world
[298]
first product the first
[299]
oled tv 2011 would see the playstation
[303]
veto and one of the first
[304]
4k tvs two years later the playstation 4
[308]
would be released
[309]
and in 2016 the playstation vr headset
[312]
was launched
[313]
according to one patent consulting firm
[316]
sony has 366 patents for virtual reality
[320]
all these achievements over the lifetime
[322]
of the company are nothing
[324]
short of remarkable but as some
[326]
spectators are noticing
[327]
sony has been stagnating a little the
[329]
company's sales haven't been what they
[330]
used to
[331]
and the clarity of their direction is a
[333]
little muddy let's take a look at some
[335]
reasons of why this is happening
[339]
just quickly before we get to the
[340]
company itself we should take a look at
[342]
the background environment sony was
[344]
facing
[344]
when they started to falter in 1990
[348]
there was a devastating economic
[349]
recession in japan
[351]
it was caused by a shift in the nation's
[352]
demographics and faulty central banking
[354]
policies
[357]
the central bank of japan loaned too
[359]
much money pushing up asset prices
[361]
until it all finally burst in 1990
[365]
this resulted in rampant stagflation in
[368]
the country
[369]
wages fell prices stayed stagnant and
[371]
businesses struggled
[373]
it was so bad that there's a name for it
[376]
it's called
[376]
the lost score or the lost 20 years
[380]
because of this recession sony had to
[382]
replace full-time staff with part-time
[385]
staff
[385]
and job security became scarce during
[388]
this time of uncertainty
[390]
and low staff morale sony had to start
[392]
fighting off strong industry
[394]
competition from a rising south korea
[396]
taiwan
[397]
and china so the question must be asked
[400]
why did these countries suddenly rise
[403]
well
[403]
in the 1990s and 2000s the global
[406]
electronics industry experienced a
[408]
structural change
[409]
after the pc and internet revolution the
[411]
industry began to standardize parts and
[413]
outsource production and assembly work
[416]
to companies in low-cost emerging
[418]
economies
[419]
this was cheaper and more efficient on a
[421]
macro scale
[422]
meanwhile most of sony products were
[424]
still being made in japan
[426]
which had a higher cost in the
[427]
manufacturing pipeline than its
[428]
competitors
[430]
all of a sudden japanese products were
[432]
expensive compared to the emerging
[434]
manufacturers
[436]
when questioned on why he didn't want to
[437]
drop prices sony chairman
[439]
akio morita said we are selling diamonds
[442]
at the time this was true as sony
[445]
products were of high quality in the
[446]
early 90s
[447]
but eventually the other manufacturers
[449]
got better at their craft and the
[451]
quality of their products improved
[453]
suddenly there wasn't all that much
[455]
distinction to justify sony's high price
[458]
the next issue for sony began in the
[460]
year 2001
[461]
this is when hardware manufacturing
[463]
began to make room for the endless
[465]
applications of software
[466]
it began with the ipod a device that
[468]
uniquely got music enthusiasts
[470]
tied into software like never before
[473]
amazing little device holds a thousand
[476]
songs
[478]
that goes right in my pocket do you
[480]
remember what it was like when you got
[481]
your first walkman
[482]
you remember that feeling when you got
[484]
the first walkman in your hand it was
[486]
like
[486]
wow well i haven't picked up any mp3
[489]
player
[490]
that has made me go wow okay i want to
[492]
carry this wherever i go
[493]
[Music]
[495]
this is the first thing that makes me
[497]
feel wow
[498]
okay but this particular trend really
[500]
accelerated from the year 2007 with the
[503]
iphone
[504]
with this apple achieved a breakthrough
[506]
innovation in handsets
[508]
it allowed users to expand the
[509]
functionality of their phones
[511]
through applications developed by
[512]
engineers and even individuals worldwide
[515]
so how did sony respond
[519]
nobuyuki ide president of sony during
[521]
the early 2000s
[522]
reacted by trying to combine sony's
[524]
audio and video technology departments
[526]
with its i.t department
[529]
ideas stated that he just couldn't do it
[531]
the company was simply too big
[534]
although he was aware that there was a
[535]
need to shift sony's business strategy
[537]
he could not change the mindset of all
[539]
140 000 employees and managers
[542]
the top leader is not a person with
[544]
supernatural powers he said
[546]
during this time idea even considered
[549]
acquiring apple
[551]
in an effort to save themselves sony has
[553]
recently streamlined its operations
[555]
focusing less on audio and visual
[557]
manufacturing
[558]
unfortunately according to one executive
[560]
who spoke with the times of japan
[562]
quote now that many excellent workers
[565]
have left sony as a result of structural
[567]
reforms
[568]
the company's power of innovation has
[569]
declined sharply
[571]
end quote in the sphere of manufacturing
[574]
sony has been outmaneuvered by the
[576]
koreans chinese
[577]
and taiwanese in fact in the early 2010s
[581]
most of sony's profits actually came
[582]
from their financial services
[584]
and not their manufacturing operations
[587]
in 2013
[588]
it was so bad that some investors
[591]
suggested that sony should just abandon
[592]
their hardware division and just stick
[594]
to making financial loans
[597]
even the entertainment area of the
[599]
company has taken a hit it's fallen into
[601]
a two-way tire with paramount as warner
[603]
brothers surges past
[605]
in addition to this the xperia phone
[607]
brand has had disappointing sales
[609]
and a backlog of sourcing issues and
[611]
this isn't to mention that sony is
[613]
getting steamrolled in the tv department
[615]
by samsung
[617]
in short today sony is losing ground
[620]
everywhere it's simply too large too
[623]
diverse in its categories
[624]
and focus too much on the sub-brand
[626]
names
[627]
with all of that being said it's not all
[630]
bad though
[631]
in late 2016 sony started to turn around
[635]
their smartphone department was losing
[636]
money all throughout 2015
[638]
but did manage to post a reasonable
[640]
profit in 2016.
[642]
they did this by streamlining the phone
[644]
product range cutting costs
[646]
and focusing harder on premium phones
[648]
with profitable margins
[650]
while identifying better target markets
[652]
with this being said
[654]
this doesn't mean that sony's phones are
[655]
doing well versus the rest of the market
[658]
samsung apple and the chinese brands
[660]
still largely dominate
[662]
the brightest spot for sony is the
[664]
playstation 4. it's doing
[666]
very well selling over 17 million units
[668]
in fiscal year 2016.
[671]
the strength of the ps4 has helped sony
[673]
reach its full first year of profit
[675]
in three years the playstation 4 was so
[678]
good that it amounted to 78
[680]
of all profits in q1 of 2016.
[684]
some other bright spots is sony's
[686]
digital camera division and also their
[688]
smartphone sensor division
[690]
sony's smartphone camera sensors are
[692]
used in other popular brands like apple
[694]
samsung lg motorola oneplus one
[698]
and of course the sony xperia range
[701]
there's also talk of a new sony
[703]
smartphone camera that can shoot
[705]
full hd at get this 1000 frames per
[708]
second
[712]
so now that we've seen how and why
[714]
sony's began to falter
[716]
what are some solutions some analysts
[719]
say
[719]
that sony needs to break from its past
[721]
by completely transferring its existing
[723]
businesses to overseas or even separate
[726]
companies
[726]
in a bid to create innovation
[730]
since the playstation is so successful
[732]
perhaps they should double down on that
[734]
and focus on that segment
[735]
things like partnering with content
[737]
creators to make even more killer games
[739]
for the ps4 line
[740]
as well as some intuitive and addictive
[742]
vr titles could really provide some
[744]
growth
[745]
doubling down on differentiation with
[747]
their smart friend camera line does also
[749]
have some potential
[751]
all in all as was seen time and time
[753]
again on cold fusion
[754]
this is a common problem for companies
[757]
their rise is meteoric
[758]
but when they become too large and
[760]
diverse management becomes more
[762]
fragmented and often bureaucratic
[764]
and it becomes difficult to see where
[765]
the next clear step is
[767]
usually when this happens increasing
[769]
competition creeps up from behind to
[771]
steal some thunder
[773]
in conclusion the future of sony is
[775]
hanging in the balance right now
[777]
they've arguably been stagnating for
[779]
over a decade but in the last year the
[781]
company has been starting to show some
[783]
promising glimpses of hope
[785]
ultimately we have to wait and see how
[787]
they react to their environment moving
[788]
forward
[789]
that being said if there's anything that
[791]
we've learned from sony in the last 60
[793]
years from the previous video
[794]
is that they've got a very innovative
[796]
dna so a renaissance is a possibility
[799]
anyways that's what we'll leave the
[800]
story of sony today hope you enjoyed
[802]
that
[803]
i found it quite an interesting history
[804]
to go through and kind of analyze where
[806]
they've been starting to falter

[825]
