Current Teen Debit Card vs. Copper Teen Bank | Best TEEN Debit Card - YouTube

Channel: Magnified Money

[0]
We've looked at a lot of financial products聽 designed for teenagers here on the channel聽聽
[3]
but two of the best bank accounts聽 that have emerged in that category聽聽
[7]
are the copper teen banking account and the聽 current teen banking account. So today let's聽聽
[12]
brush up on everything that both of these products聽 have to offer and hopefully help you decide which聽聽
[17]
one is the best banking platform for teenagers聽 today. All right let's jump right into it.聽聽
[26]
what is going on everyone I hope you are all聽 having a fantastic day. So as per usual with聽聽
[30]
this versus style video I have made separate聽 reviews on both the current teen banking聽聽
[35]
account as well as the copper bank account so聽 if you want an in depth look at either of those聽聽
[40]
products then I'll be sure to leave links for聽 both of those videos in the description below.聽聽
[44]
And I do also want to clarify that while current聽 has sponsored videos in the past and I would love聽聽
[48]
to work with them again in the future, neither聽 current nor copper are sponsoring today's video聽聽
[53]
so with that out of the way let's start off with聽 the current team banking account and then we'll聽聽
[57]
take a look at what copper has to offer. Alright聽 so if you haven't heard of the standard current聽聽
[62]
account, it's pretty awesome and I have also done聽 a full review on that platform but as part of聽聽
[67]
Currents goal of revamping the way that we bank,聽 they have added a teen specific product that is聽聽
[72]
an extension of the standard current banking聽 platform. So in order to get this account,聽聽
[76]
you will first either need to set up the standard聽 current account if you are the parents or as a聽聽
[82]
teenager you will have to have your parents set up聽 a current account. Then from there, it is really聽聽
[87]
easy for the teen to open an account, link the聽 two together and that's where the true advantage聽聽
[92]
of this platform lies. So yes, as is the case with聽 pretty much any financial product for teenagers,聽聽
[98]
this does require you to have a parent or guardian聽 to keep an eye on things which I know can be a聽聽
[103]
little frustrating in some situations but as I've聽 said many times before, the advantages that you're聽聽
[108]
going to get from a product like this are going to聽 far outweigh the minor inconvenience of having a聽聽
[114]
parent or guardian constantly looking over your聽 shoulder. Okay so look at the full current team聽聽
[118]
review for a step by step guide on how to link聽 these two accounts but once you get everything聽聽
[123]
set up, you as the teenager are going to get your聽 own current card with your name on it that you can聽聽
[128]
use to spend money as you would with a normal聽 debit card. And that includes making purchases聽聽
[133]
in person with the current card as well as online聽 purchases. And through Currents wonderfully聽聽
[138]
designed app, you're able to easily manage your聽 money, create budgets and savings pods, utilize聽聽
[143]
their roundup tools that will automatically round聽 up your purchases and set that extra money aside聽聽
[147]
in your savings, set up automatic donations聽 to your favorite charities, and of course聽聽
[151]
easily request or send money to and from your聽 parent鈥檚 current account which is fantastic for聽聽
[158]
getting reimbursed for purchases that you made or聽 getting your allowance or anything like that. Now聽聽
[163]
from a parent's perspective, you have the ability聽 to monitor your child鈥檚 spending right from within聽聽
[168]
the current app and you can even select specific聽 merchants where you don't want them to spend their聽聽
[173]
money. Obviously, you can pause and replace their聽 card right from within the app and in general,聽聽
[178]
I would say that this is simply a much more secure聽 way to give your child that financial freedom聽聽
[183]
and learn the value of money without giving them聽 cash in hopes of getting the change back because聽聽
[189]
you and I both know that's probably not going to聽 happen. Plus this account has no hidden fees, no聽聽
[194]
minimum balance requirements, no overdraft fees,聽 no transfer fees, but there is one major drawback聽聽
[199]
that we have not yet talked about and that is聽 that the current teen account costs $36 per year聽聽
[205]
for each teen. Now, this is a point that we're聽 going to come back to later in the video when we聽聽
[209]
compare it to the Copper card but what I will say聽 for now is that 6 bucks per month might sound like聽聽
[216]
a lot, and from a teens perspective it probably聽 would be. But in my opinion, the value of teaching聽聽
[221]
your child how to responsibly budget, save money,聽 and learn all of those principles of financial聽聽
[226]
literacy is truly invaluable and in my eyes, $6聽 a month is a small price to pay to teach those聽聽
[233]
important financial lessons. Obviously, that is a聽 decision that you will have to make for yourself聽聽
[240]
but I can honestly say that the wonderful and聽 truly unique integration between your account and聽聽
[246]
your teen鈥檚 account and all of the benefits that聽 come with that is well worth the small price of聽聽
[251]
$6 per month especially considering the standard聽 current account has a completely free option with聽聽
[256]
the ability to upgrade if you want to get some of聽 those higher-end features. All things considered,聽聽
[262]
the current team account keeps it fairly simple聽 but the entire design of the current app is meant聽聽
[266]
to be very intuitive and easy to understand聽 especially for a younger audience and the only聽聽
[271]
big drawback here in my opinion is that $36 annual聽 fee. Alright, but moving onto Copper bank, again I聽聽
[277]
have done a full review on this platform if you聽 want a really in-depth look but unlike current,聽聽
[283]
copper is specifically focused on banking for聽 teenagers and that's literally all they do.聽聽
[288]
Now that doesn't necessarily mean that this is聽 better or worse than any other team platform聽聽
[294]
but it is nice to see that companies are finally聽 coming around to the idea of teaching teens those聽聽
[299]
important financial lessons at a young age. So the聽 copper card is going to function in a very similar聽聽
[304]
way in the sense that you are going to get your聽 own copper debit card then again that you can use聽聽
[309]
to spend money both in-person and online just like聽 you would with any other debit card. Your money is聽聽
[314]
fully FDIC insured through evolve bank in trust,聽 you have liability protection through MasterCard,聽聽
[321]
Plus the ability to withdraw cash at over 50,000聽 free to use ATMs that are scattered across the聽聽
[326]
United States. This product also allows you聽 to get your paycheck up to two days early聽聽
[330]
using direct deposit which is pretty cool if you聽 have a standard job but it's also really easy to聽聽
[337]
just get your allowance if that is something聽 that your parent or guardian does for you聽聽
[341]
and they can actually set up automated allowance聽 that makes it really easy for you to again create聽聽
[346]
that affective budget, save your money, and of聽 course spend responsibly when and where you can.聽聽
[350]
And just like the current teen account, copper聽 also has no hidden fees, no overdraft fees, no聽聽
[354]
minimum balance requirements, but unlike Current,聽 the copper platform is truly completely free to聽聽
[362]
download and use, and really that's the major聽 difference between these two products. I will say聽聽
[367]
that the current app has nearly 100,000 reviews聽 with nearly five stars on the iOS App Store alone聽聽
[373]
while copper has only 10,000 reviews with nearly聽 five stars however that is not a fair comparison聽聽
[379]
at all because again Current is a broader platform聽 that has standard banking tools while copper is聽聽
[385]
specifically aimed at teenagers but that aside,聽 both of these platforms are incredibly highly聽聽
[391]
rated and in my opinion it really is all going聽 to come down to which platform is going to聽聽
[396]
more easily integrate with your situation. That's聽 because on the surface, these products are nearly聽聽
[401]
identical in the sense that they're going to聽 put a debit card in the hands of a teenager,聽聽
[406]
allow them to responsibly save, spend, and聽 budget their money, receive their paychecks聽聽
[411]
or allowances while simultaneously allowing the聽 parent or guardian to keep an eye on their teen鈥檚聽聽
[416]
finances. Really the only major difference is聽 the fact that the current card is $36 per year聽聽
[422]
while Copper is completely free but what I聽 will reiterate is that the integration and聽聽
[427]
ability to have your entire family under one聽 banking platform is truly unique to Current聽聽
[433]
and one of the things that I love most about that聽 platform as a whole. That's not to say that copper聽聽
[437]
doesn't have the ability for you to easily聽 receive an allowance and things of that nature聽聽
[442]
but current truly gives you the ability to聽 have the parent or guardian with their own聽聽
[447]
bank accounts, multiple teenagers who each聽 have their own bank accounts, maybe even an聽聽
[449]
additional parent or some other family member who聽 has their own account, and all of those were able聽聽
[456]
to be tide together end intelligently communicate聽 with each other allowing you to not just keep an聽聽
[462]
eye on your finances and your teen鈥檚 finances but聽 really the finances of your entire family. Yes,聽聽
[466]
I understand that 36 bucks per year might聽 be a bummer especially if you're looking at聽聽
[470]
getting this for multiple teenagers but I cannot聽 reiterate enough how valuable the lessons are that聽聽
[475]
a platform like this can teach and in my opinion,聽 they will probably learn a ton of more useful聽聽
[483]
skills through a platform like this that empowers聽 financial literacy then many would get from a聽聽
[486]
four-year education that could cost hundreds of聽 thousands of dollars in some cases. Obviously,聽聽
[490]
that's an extreme scenario but I guess聽 the point I'm trying to drive home here聽聽
[493]
is that if you're on the fence between these聽 two platforms and you feel like you would love聽聽
[497]
to have the ability to have your entire family聽 under one platform while also empowering each聽聽
[502]
individual to have their own accounts, then聽 I wouldn't allow that small fee from current聽聽
[507]
to automatically drive you away. So again聽 strictly looking at a teen banking platform,聽聽
[512]
these two are nearly identical but I think for聽 me personally I have to look at the big picture聽聽
[518]
and the industry acceptance so having used both of聽 these platforms I think that personally, I would聽聽
[522]
go with current simply because I think it is a聽 more widespread and well-known platform, I love聽聽
[528]
the fact that everything is able to be under one聽 app for your entire family, and having used both聽聽
[532]
apps, I can confidently say that I do prefer the聽 layout and interface of the current app. As always聽聽
[539]
I would love to know what you think of these聽 two products down in the comment section below聽聽
[542]
and whether you prefer the copper teen account or聽 the current teen account and why you feel that is聽聽
[548]
the better financial tool for you. Again I'll be聽 sure to leave links to both of my full reviews on聽聽
