Aircraft Ownership vs Rental: is it worth BUYING A PLANE? - YouTube
Channel: Fly With Bruno
[4]
six months ago
[5]
i took a big leap in my pilot's life i
[8]
bought a plane
[10]
now like everybody who buys their first
[12]
plane i had this question lurking in my
[14]
mind
[18]
will it be worth it
[22]
well six months later i finally have the
[24]
answer
[26]
and two big reasons for what that answer
[28]
is
[29]
spoiler alert it's a big yes
[44]
[Music]
[58]
yes it was definitely worth to get my
[60]
own plane
[61]
and the first reason is i saved and will
[64]
continue to save
[65]
a lot of money my aviation life
[69]
started by renting planes and here in
[71]
new york
[72]
the average hourly cost is about 160
[75]
dollars
[76]
that goes on top of the renter's
[78]
insurance that you have to pay yearly
[81]
i used to fly at least four hours per
[83]
weekend
[84]
or two times per week so in the course
[87]
of a year
[88]
i was spending a lot of money
[92]
[Music]
[95]
over the last six months i kept track of
[98]
all the costs involved in operating and
[100]
maintaining my plane
[101]
so i could get what the current hourly
[103]
cost was
[105]
and surprise it's now down to 45
[109]
dollars an hour
[115]
now how did i get to this number first i
[118]
take the cost of my annual
[119]
and my insurance and divide them by 12
[122]
so i can get the monthly figure
[124]
then i add the cost of my tie down and
[126]
variable monthly costs such as fuel
[128]
oil and landing fees after adding it all
[132]
up
[133]
i divided by the amount of hours that i
[134]
flew that same month
[136]
and boom i get my hourly cost
[140]
for the past six months it's been
[142]
consistently at around
[144]
45 dollars an hour that's four times
[147]
less what i used to pay for renting
[149]
not to mention that i no longer worry
[151]
about schedules
[152]
higher rates on weekends or limitations
[154]
on long rentals
[157]
[Music]
[164]
now obviously the cost of the plane
[167]
itself
[168]
or the avionics upgrade that it recently
[170]
went through
[171]
are not a part of this equation because
[173]
to me they are not costs
[175]
they were investments in both me and my
[178]
safety
[179]
those were one-time costs there are now
[181]
in the past
[183]
and my math considers the costs that are
[185]
now ahead of me
[188]
what's also not included in this math
[190]
are potential maintenance issues or
[192]
things that i have to fix
[193]
that may come up along the way when it
[195]
comes to airplanes
[196]
things are expensive but if you think
[198]
about the difference between 160 and 45
[201]
i'm pretty sure that even if i have to
[203]
pay extra to fix something
[205]
replace something or even invest a
[207]
little bit more on the plane
[208]
i'll still be very low in that range
[213]
[Music]
[223]
now here's another reason why buying a
[225]
plane was well worth for me
[230]
it's making me a better pilot when it
[240]
comes to mechanics
[241]
or understanding the inner workings of a
[242]
plane most pilots learn
[244]
or memorize things for the sake of
[246]
passing a written test
[248]
or a check right oral exam over the past
[250]
six months
[251]
i lost count of how many hours i spent
[253]
hearing the hangar talking to the amp
[256]
mechanics avionics experts and absorbing
[259]
every bit of knowledge that i could
[261]
about the plane how things work
[263]
how to fix them when they break and so
[266]
on
[268]
during the avionics upgrade process i
[270]
was here almost
[271]
every weekend watching the guys do their
[273]
work disassemble the panel
[275]
replace all the wiring install the new
[278]
systems
[278]
learn how they work and what could i do
[281]
in case that they
[287]
[Music]
[294]
failed
[299]
going through maintenance issues also
[300]
teaches you a lot
[302]
during the afr certification process
[304]
they found a leak
[305]
in my python static system we took the
[308]
entire
[308]
interior of the plane apart and i
[310]
learned what a pythostatic line is
[313]
why it had failed where the leak was
[316]
and helped decide what would be the best
[318]
course of action to take
[320]
in order to fix the problem that was a
[323]
big lesson for me
[325]
then recently on a very cold winter day
[328]
i turned my master on but didn't get any
[330]
power
[330]
i thought my battery was dead turns out
[333]
that when
[334]
analyzing it with the mechanic i learned
[336]
that the battery was just fine and the
[338]
problem
[338]
was a solenoid that was loose all it
[341]
took was a wrench
[342]
to tighten the screws and bank
[345]
i got power again and i still went
[347]
flying that day
[349]
these are important lessons that you
[350]
learn when you live through these things
[352]
and potentially lessons that i would use
[355]
whenever i get stuck
[356]
somewhere with a similar problem so
[359]
instead of paying for a last-minute
[360]
hotel room
[361]
and waiting for the mechanic the next
[363]
day i can perhaps try to fix it myself
[376]
now when i get to the airport instead of
[379]
rushing to take off so i can make the
[380]
most of that two or four hour block on
[382]
the schedule
[383]
i take my time doing a good pre-flight
[386]
making sure that
[387]
everything is where it's supposed to be
[389]
and most importantly
[390]
making sure the plane is in the exact
[392]
same way i left it
[394]
when i last flew it
[401]
when i finished my instrument raiding
[403]
last may i decided i was committed to
[405]
aviation for life
[407]
and buying a plane was the best decision
[409]
that i've made
[410]
ever since only 84 uniform has taught me
[413]
lessons on a daily basis
[415]
and i feel like i've never learned so
[418]
much in aviation
[419]
as i'm doing now
[423]
and now for the sake of passing my next
[424]
check right
[427]
but for the sake of getting better at
[429]
the thing that i love the most
[445]
i really hope this video was able to
[447]
give you a little bit more insight on
[448]
aircraft ownership and that it helps you
[450]
make a better informed decision if
[452]
you're thinking about buying and play
[455]
thank you all for subscribing to this
[457]
channel and for following my instagram
[458]
page
[459]
and i can't wait to share my next flying
[461]
adventures with you all
[463]
until then you know the drill blue skies
[466]
tailwinds
[467]
and i'll see you in the next one bye
[481]
[Music]
[493]
