Best Budget Camera Monitor (For Cameras Without Flip Screens) - YouTube

Channel: Think Media

[0]
so is shooting YouTube videos it's
[1]
really nice to have a flip-out screen so
[3]
that you can monitor yourself and make
[5]
adjustments but what happens if your
[7]
camera doesn't have a flip-out screen or
[10]
if you actually are shooting further
[12]
away well you can always invest in an
[14]
expensive external monitor but not
[16]
everyone has the money to do that so in
[18]
this video I'm going to talk about my
[20]
favorite cheap monitor for DSLR and
[23]
mirrorless cameras which is actually
[25]
free and that is using your smartphone
[27]
or a laptop with software to create a
[30]
monitor for your video so I'm gonna
[32]
reveal how to do it and more coming up
[36]
[Music]
[40]
hey what's up Sean here with think media
[43]
bring you the best tips and tools for
[45]
building your influence with online
[46]
video and on this channel we do a lot of
[48]
tech gear reviews as well as tips and
[50]
strategy videos just like this one so if
[52]
you're new here consider subscribing so
[54]
a lot of us when creating YouTube videos
[56]
we shoot by ourselves right so whether
[58]
we're at home or at an office it's
[60]
really nice to have a camera that has a
[63]
flip-out monitor so that when you're
[65]
shooting you can monitor yourself maybe
[67]
adjust some settings but you run into a
[68]
couple situations that can be
[71]
problematic number one maybe your camera
[73]
doesn't have a flip-out screen so now
[75]
you have to get everything right start
[78]
the recording run in front of the camera
[79]
and then it's kind of a guessing game or
[81]
it does but maybe you're shooting kind
[84]
of far away from the camera right now
[85]
I'm about five six feet away from it so
[88]
even having a monitor wouldn't help me
[90]
very much and additionally it's also
[92]
nice if you can adjust the controls
[94]
without having to be behind the camera
[96]
because if it's in this case I'd have to
[98]
run back adjust the controls run back
[100]
over here adjust the controls and so
[102]
that's why having an external monitor is
[104]
really nice but they can cost a lot of
[107]
money they range from a couple hundred
[108]
dollars to hundreds of dollars and so in
[110]
this video I wanted to talk about a free
[112]
way to create an external monitor and
[115]
initially that is downloading the app
[118]
for your camera so right now we're
[120]
actually shooting on a sony a7r - and
[124]
this is the Sony PlayMemories app and
[126]
I'm able to start and stop the recording
[128]
on here as well as see the entire shot
[131]
composition right here on my
[133]
phone now the different apps vary
[136]
depending on the camera model there is a
[138]
Panasonic one it's called the Panasonic
[139]
image app and the Canon one is called
[142]
the canon camera connect and different
[146]
ones do different things in the Sony one
[148]
I don't think we can adjust the controls
[150]
here but we can start and stop recording
[151]
so that's nice you can make sure the
[153]
camera is still running you can see your
[155]
whole shot composition but on the Canon
[158]
app you can change the shutter speed the
[160]
ISO so even if you want to dial in the
[162]
exact picture and image settings you can
[165]
do that on the app okay and so the two
[167]
things that you want to check to see if
[169]
you can do this with your setup is is
[171]
your camera a new enough model to have
[173]
Wi-Fi and app compatibility and does
[176]
your camera manufacturer actually have
[178]
an app for your camera
[180]
we know Canon Panasonic Sony's good and
[182]
I'm sure some of the other brands have
[184]
it covered as well additionally there's
[187]
some other cool things that you can do
[188]
with the mobile app for your camera I
[190]
mean if you're ever taking a group photo
[192]
and you set your camera up instead of
[193]
using the timer you can just use your
[195]
phone as a remote shutter of course you
[197]
can start and stop recording if you want
[198]
to do video clips but it's also great
[200]
for just transferring files a lot of the
[202]
newer cameras allow you to transfer
[204]
transfer video and photos over Wi-Fi and
[207]
we like to do this a lot on the road if
[209]
we want to take nicer photos for
[210]
Instagram or whatnot we can just grab
[212]
them to our phones really quickly and
[214]
then share them online
[216]
so using an app is a super good solution
[218]
however there is another solution that
[220]
might work for you as well and that is
[222]
using your laptop and software and so
[226]
the only way that I've ever tested this
[228]
is with the Canon EOS utility but this
[231]
is another great way to be able to
[233]
create a monitor as well as adjust your
[236]
settings and so here's all you have to
[237]
do to set it up is you grab your USB
[240]
cable and you can just plug it into your
[242]
camera this is a Canon 70d
[244]
picked it up right away there on my
[246]
camera and it opens up the EOS utility
[249]
app then I can go to my camera settings
[251]
and remote shooting and go to my live
[254]
view mode and there it is it's
[255]
activating the camera now one tool or
[258]
tip that I'm using here is a USB
[260]
extension cable that's just usb about I
[264]
think it's ten feet long because this
[266]
little black cave
[267]
not very long and now I can use this
[270]
camera and and operate it remotely here
[273]
so if I was to use this as the main
[275]
shooter here then I can not only see my
[277]
shot but I can make all kinds of
[279]
adjustments to it even down to the frame
[281]
rate and the white balance and a lot of
[284]
things and so if you were gonna be batch
[286]
producing content yourself you got your
[288]
whole studio set up just like this then
[291]
this is a great way you could have even
[293]
your notes here on say your computer
[295]
your laptop and you can also make sure
[297]
you have your adjusted adjustments and
[299]
settings all controlled through the Yui
[301]
OS utility so either a software solution
[304]
or a mobile phone smartphone app
[306]
solution two really great ways to have
[309]
the best monitor for cheap actually free
[312]
right if you already have that stuff
[313]
around to be able to start leveling up
[315]
your videos because you have more
[316]
control and better vision of the content
[319]
you're creating okay so I hope that
[321]
these tips were helpful and as usual I
[323]
will post links to the EOS download and
[325]
other information the app downloads in
[327]

[329]
definitely check those out question of
[331]
