Will Tesla Model 3 Production Reach Goal? Let's Do the Math [live] - YouTube
Channel: Ben Sullins
[0]
hello and welcome everyone to Tesla
[2]
namah Clive I'm your host Ben sullens
[4]
and this is the show where we break down
[6]
the biggest news related to Tesla from
[9]
the previous week we do it live because
[11]
well things change
[12]
very quickly when the world of Tesla as
[14]
you probably know for those of you
[16]
joining me on YouTube thanks for
[18]
stopping in I am gonna have a Q&A that
[20]
is private just for folks on crowdcast
[22]
which happens on a separate platform
[24]
it's free to join but in order to get
[26]
the invite you need to be in the
[28]
community and in order to do that you
[30]
need to get on our list at Tesla Mexico
[32]
slash join so that's first up if you
[35]
want to be a part of the Q&A that's how
[37]
you get in there second up is the
[39]
referral program is ending soon and so
[41]
if you are looking to buy an S or an X
[43]
make sure to get a referral code and get
[47]
the free supercharging we assume many of
[49]
us that it will continue but you know
[52]
you never know with these things it may
[53]
change it may be limited they may get
[55]
rid of it entirely I doubt that but in
[58]
any event if you're looking for one you
[60]
can check out mine at the link below
[62]
so today's show is all about the Model 3
[67]
and the progress so without further ado
[71]
let me jump right into the data here so
[74]
first and foremost yesterday the model 3
[78]
tracker this is from Bloomberg they've
[80]
been doing this for a little while I'm
[82]
Tom Randall and Dean Dean Halford have
[87]
these methods of tracking this
[88]
information they want to actually see
[90]
look at the VINs and look at all these
[93]
different things and kind of how they're
[94]
progressing to see what the ramp is
[96]
looking like for the Model 3 and I like
[100]
looking at data and numbers like this -
[102]
as you probably know and so I've taken
[104]
these numbers and plug them into my
[106]
forecast model to try to figure out
[107]
exactly if they will hit that 2500 per
[112]
week goal by the end of q1 which by the
[115]
way is in like five days so needless to
[120]
say one of the biggest things was that
[123]
they just jumped you can see that Tom
[125]
Randle had an update here he said this
[127]
is the last week of production before
[129]
Tesla reports its quarterly progress our
[131]
weekly estimates don't respond quickly
[133]
in
[133]
to capture last-minute burst in
[135]
production so literally this number last
[138]
night yesterday was 800 so they went
[141]
from 800 to 975 in a day and that's
[146]
because of how their model works I think
[149]
it's a good model they have a couple
[150]
different variations here but I do not
[153]
believe that they are going to hit the
[155]
goal of 2500 per week by the end of q1
[158]
literally in five days but I don't think
[160]
that matters either so what I did is I
[163]
actually took these numbers and I
[165]
plugged him into my model here let's
[167]
take a look at that for a second third
[170]
first this is the the function the log
[173]
function if you're unfamiliar maybe in
[174]
stats class in college or something you
[176]
guys remember how it all worked but the
[178]
way that this actually comes together is
[181]
you have basically the midpoint and the
[184]
maximum and you're trying to guess those
[187]
two different points now there's another
[188]
way of doing it but in any event you
[191]
have this kind of sigmoid or s-curve and
[193]
this is what Ilan always talks about
[195]
with with the the delivery ramp of the
[198]
model 3 and how it all works so what I
[201]
did is I basically modeled that into
[203]
excel and I couldn't find the link of
[205]
the guy who originally built this but if
[208]
and when I do I'll post it but he
[210]
basically did a version of that in Excel
[212]
which instead of having a single
[213]
midpoint we have two points kind of the
[215]
starting and end points or I'm sorry the
[218]
beginning and then the midpoint and then
[219]
the maximum so you can see what I've
[221]
done here is I've plugged in the date
[223]
today the number 975 which is what
[226]
they're currently at based on that
[228]
Bloomberg tracker now the 2500 I'm
[230]
putting out to 6:30 instead of this you
[234]
know at the end of q1 and then I'm
[237]
giving them a maximum of 10,000 so a lot
[240]
of these things are speculative and
[242]
that's why I like to look at these a few
[243]
different ways and actually come up with
[245]
different models so from there what I
[248]
did
[248]
oops is I plugged it in to two different
[252]
angles here one is a 5k maximum weekly
[256]
production and a 10k maximum weekly
[258]
production because we still don't
[260]
actually know now you honest said that
[263]
you know they can reach 10,000 per week
[264]
in the model 3 line at Fremont
[266]
but until that's
[267]
prove and I think it's it's makes sense
[269]
to have a really healthy dose of
[271]
skepticism because all the other numbers
[273]
and everything's that they've came up
[274]
with have not actually panned out so I
[277]
modeled both of them the dark kind of
[280]
red or pink is is the five thousand one
[282]
you can see that line kind of
[284]
referencing there and then the other one
[285]
is the ten thousand one so all of these
[287]
are using that midpoint of June
[291]
thirtieth at 2,500 and kind of where
[293]
would they go from there so this is what
[295]
that ramp looks like and if you
[297]
extrapolate that out you can see what
[299]
the totals would be by year so for 2018
[302]
we're looking at eighty-five thousand if
[304]
you're on the 5k maximum if you're on
[307]
the other model the 10k model then we're
[309]
looking at a hundred and seventy
[311]
thousand so that's a big number for
[313]
Tesla and then going into the future
[315]
you're looking at you know two hundred
[316]
and fifty thousand two hundred and sixty
[318]
thousand and then on the 10k model
[320]
although all the way up you know north
[321]
of five hundred thousand so there's
[323]
still a lot of cars to be made very
[326]
likely by Tesla this year for the model
[328]
three alone I mean we're talking you
[330]
know double all the you know this is
[332]
equivalent to all of the production of s
[335]
and X from last year in fact more so so
[338]
they're gonna double production this
[340]
year overall is what it looks like on
[341]
their current trajectory so I think this
[343]
is good news I think that you know even
[346]
though there may be there obviously
[347]
delayed lots of people are getting their
[350]
cars the more you look online the more
[352]
you see you know truckloads of them
[354]
going by and people posting videos from
[356]
the Fremont factory there's all kinds of
[358]
things there all kinds of good signs
[360]
that this is really the ramp is is going
[362]
well or at least it's improving and so
[365]
I'm gonna continue to monitor this as
[366]
you guys know um one other tidbit about
[369]
this that there was um the the current
[373]
consensus of the total vehicles in 2018
[376]
from a different bloomberg source this
[379]
is the the gadfly this is a chart kind
[382]
of thing where you just get charts every
[383]
day I love this this email list I watch
[386]
it all the time and so they're currently
[387]
at 143 thousand for their guests for
[390]
2018 that fits right kind of neatly
[393]
between my my low and high estimates so
[396]
we'll see I'm curious what you guys
[398]
think leave me a comment down below
[401]
and if you have any other insights in
[403]
here that you want to share please hit
[405]
me up on Twitter or just in the comments
[407]
down below and and we'll take it from
[409]
there
[409]
so that's kind of the first bit of news
[411]
the next thing I want to talk about is a
[415]
bit sad this is the uber self-driving
[418]
car that killed a pedestrian in in Tempe
[422]
where not far from where I'm from I used
[424]
to live actually about a half mile from
[425]
this from this location and this is
[429]
pretty sad so the gist of it is there
[431]
was a one of the self-driving humors
[434]
these are the test vehicles that they
[435]
have out there would there is a person
[438]
behind the wheel
[439]
there was a lady crossing the street on
[441]
a bike and she was struck by the car and
[445]
then later died at the hospital those
[447]
are kind of the basic facts of it I'm
[450]
upset about this this really kind of hit
[452]
me hard because as someone that I guess
[454]
I guess this is like an industry I work
[456]
in now you know digging into these these
[459]
details and sharing that information
[462]
it's sad because I think it could have
[465]
been prevented
[466]
mostly because I think going for level
[468]
five autonomy right now is a is is early
[471]
it's way early and in my book I
[473]
understand that we we want to get there
[477]
and this is how progress is made but I
[479]
don't think that that we need to be
[481]
pushing so hard to get there you know
[484]
just to make more money I just think
[486]
it's kind of lame and so I'll show you
[489]
the exterior video here so if you know
[492]
your discretion advised if you're
[494]
sensitive to that this is kind of
[495]
graphic but you know you don't see the
[497]
person actually die or anything so don't
[499]
worry about that and I'm gonna show you
[501]
this one solely just to demonstrate like
[505]
how dark it was and how basically like
[508]
you couldn't see anything even even a
[510]
human probably would have would have
[513]
been this would have been the same
[514]
result I mean it's completely pitch
[517]
black bad news it just didn't work and
[521]
and that really sucks now two things
[524]
that that really can that made this
[527]
worse I think one was that they posted
[531]
not only this video but the video of the
[534]
dry
[534]
who appeared to be on his phone at the
[537]
time and they released his name so the
[540]
way the internet works I really this
[542]
pisses me off because this guy yes he
[545]
you know this was he's at fault here it
[548]
to some extent I'm sure people will be
[550]
digging into that you know in details
[553]
and IV investigations and all those kind
[554]
of things but this guy doesn't need to
[556]
be publicly shamed like this like he
[558]
killed someone you know even he's partly
[561]
responsible for that in some way or
[563]
another and that is gonna be something
[565]
that he's gonna live with for the rest
[566]
of his life and so he has enough pain
[569]
and suffering to deal with already that
[571]
he doesn't need to be internet shamed
[573]
out of it and so the fact that they
[575]
released that video and his name to me
[578]
is is kind of below the belt it was
[580]
unnecessary I think I think even this
[582]
exterior video isn't necessary at all
[585]
just the details of the story things
[587]
like this graphic all that is really
[590]
really enough to make this something
[592]
newsworthy so you know I'm like I love
[596]
the New York Times but but but that
[598]
really got to me so I'm curious what you
[600]
guys think about that is it is it right
[602]
is it wrong to release the video of
[603]
these videos and the guys name is it too
[607]
early to be really trying to test these
[609]
things especially at night should there
[612]
be tighter controls or you know is the
[614]
guide totally to blame here I'm curious
[616]
what you guys think
[618]
because yeah this is this will be an
[620]
ongoing thing that we are that we
[621]
unfortunately have to get more
[623]
comfortable with so curious what you
[624]
guys think let me know in the comments
[626]
down below all right next up we have
[629]
something again that's a little bit this
[632]
is a little bit close to my heart to my
[635]
business I suppose
[636]
and that was Elon decided to delete his
[641]
own SpaceX and Tesla Facebook pages and
[645]
this this article on TechCrunch here is
[648]
the one that you know they kind of put
[651]
it as a political thing because there's
[653]
this to me it's it's ironic and funny
[656]
but people want to delete facebook
[658]
assuming that that somehow gives them
[660]
for their privacy back but he was being
[664]
called out on Twitter by some people if
[666]
you're the man
[667]
you'll do it and so he wouldn't did it
[670]
which is kind of mine mind-boggling to
[673]
me you know people here are commenting
[676]
about the amount of of followers they
[680]
had and all that I mean and you know you
[683]
want had some additional comments on
[684]
this he said it's not a political
[686]
statement and I didn't do this because
[688]
someone dared me to do it just don't
[690]
like Facebook gives me the willies
[692]
sorry so I guess that's an apology or
[696]
maybe that's not an apology depends how
[699]
you want to take that really the reason
[701]
this bothered me not that I give a crap
[703]
whether Tesla and SpaceX have Facebook
[705]
pages but because this affects people at
[708]
his company and this was seemingly done
[711]
out of kind of a rash like like reaction
[715]
to something to people calling him out
[717]
on Twitter so I'm just I guess in
[719]
general not a fan of billionaires acting
[722]
erratically when they're called out on
[724]
Twitter you know there are many of those
[727]
out there that kind of do that so to me
[729]
this was this was really strange and
[731]
upsetting because it just seemed
[732]
unnecessary and likely to hurt people at
[735]
his own company for what reason I have
[738]
no clue I mean maybe to create a news
[740]
story and in distract from something
[743]
else yeah it's it's it's really odd to
[745]
me and then he followed up the you know
[748]
another response er that they've never
[750]
advertised with Facebook they don't
[751]
really advertise at all remember the the
[753]
love day campaign was because they've
[755]
never come up with an ad no none of my
[757]
companies buy advertising or pay famous
[759]
people to fake endorsed by the way I
[761]
don't count as any of those people and
[763]
no they've never paid me anything and I
[765]
do have no sponsorship from tousle
[768]
directly of course as you see they'll
[769]
never do that as I don't think they
[771]
should you know and then the product
[774]
lives or dies with its own merits I
[776]
think that's great I think that like
[778]
this statement is fine deleting those
[781]
pages because what happened immediately
[782]
is the people that are responsible for
[784]
that at the company recreated them and
[786]
then literally dozens of other people
[788]
were creating fake versions of this to
[790]
then fool other people and create a
[793]
bigger problem so in any event the
[796]
delete Facebook thing these actions
[799]
caused more can
[800]
fusion and probably more people to share
[803]
information with some some bad actors
[806]
that they maybe didn't didn't intend to
[809]
so yeah this I think is is a short for
[813]
the week this was dumb I I don't see the
[816]
point in it and it was just upsetting so
[819]
yeah anyways hopefully the people at the
[821]
company it wasn't as bad as maybe it
[823]
seems from the outside but to me this
[824]
was pretty shocking and really just
[826]
erratic weird behavior that I thought I
[828]
hate to see from from Elon because I
[830]
think the mission of Tesla is so
[832]
important that you know this stuff kind
[834]
of is a distraction and annoying to me
[838]
anyways so curious what you guys think
[840]
leave me a comment down below I don't
[842]
know
[842]
did you delete Facebook do you think
[844]
that gives you privacy if so why do you
[847]
care that he did this or is this just
[849]
another dumb little side note so let me
[851]
know I'm curious what you guys think
[853]
about that all right next up model three
[857]
reservations are being are now available
[860]
in Canada my friend Trevor page I've got
[863]
a little video clip of him going through
[866]
the configurator he explains it let me
[869]
pull up my notes just to walk give you
[871]
guys the the short version of it it's
[874]
for current owners only so current Tesla
[876]
owners only it's only first production
[878]
it's forty five thousand six hundred
[880]
Canadian dollars and then six sixty
[884]
three thousand one hundred Canadian
[885]
dollars total which include the the the
[888]
thousand dollar credit the question I
[890]
have about this is why would they do it
[892]
I think they would do it to try to
[895]
reduce the amount of cars they're
[896]
delivering this quarter so that way they
[899]
can hope I mean if they can push the tax
[902]
credit hitting that two hundred thousand
[905]
car delivered in North America or I'm
[907]
sorry in the US to q3 that would be
[910]
tremendous for all the folks waiting on
[914]
that base model three and everything
[916]
else I think that would be phenomenal
[918]
but I don't really know if this is gonna
[921]
do it or if this is just a part of their
[923]
growth strategy we really won't have
[925]
more of a clue until a little bit later
[927]
on and in my favorite place to check out
[930]
info about that is on inside Eevee's
[933]
calm the
[934]
a sponsor not affiliated in any way I
[936]
know those guys and they we shared data
[938]
from time to time but that's usually
[940]
where I look to when I'm when I'm
[941]
curious about this kind of things to
[942]
make sure to go check out check out
[945]
their site there I mean also I'll put a
[947]
link to this video if you want to see
[948]
Trevor walk through the whole thing I
[950]
think is pretty you know pretty cool if
[951]
you've never seen it also if you're in
[954]
Canada you know this is all the Canadian
[956]
dollars and all those kind of things you
[957]
can see kind of exactly how that works
[959]
and of course subscribe to Trevor's
[962]
channel because it's fantastic so there
[964]
you go
[965]
all right so that is all the news for
[966]
today everyone thank you for joining me
[969]
I'm gonna switch over to crowdcast now
[972]
and do the Q&A and if you would like to
[975]
join that again remember to go to Tesla
[978]
nama Coast life's joy and then next week
[980]
you'll get an invite we do limit it so
[982]
it just doesn't get too out of hand
[984]
it's already out of hand with how many
[985]
questions people ask and stay tuned for
[988]
more of the highlights from today's
[990]
livestream as well as a Q&A later this
[993]
week as well as I have some really
[995]
special videos April I've been kind of
[997]
laying low in March taking it a little
[999]
bit easy April's gonna be a big month
[1001]
I'm planning a lot of big videos so stay
[1003]
tuned make sure in fact make sure to
[1005]
click that bell so you don't miss any
[1008]
videos that may or may not be coming out
[1010]
this weekend all right guys well thanks
[1012]
for watching and I'm gonna switch
