to talk a little bit about what happens if you聽
forgot about a traffic ticket in a court date?聽聽

Maybe what can happen next? Before I get started,聽

you got a traffic ticket completely forgot about聽
it. And you stumbled upon it in your car and you聽聽
[33]
realize the date was from a couple weeks ago?聽
Maybe it's been a month. And the question now,聽聽
[39]
like, I missed my traffic ticket now what?聽
What could be the consequences. So usually,聽聽
[45]
there's a few things. Second situation, if you聽
miss a court date, the court may issue what they聽聽
[51]
call a bench warrant or attachment for the failure聽
to appear. Some courts will also issue a contempt聽聽
[59]
fine for not making that appearance. And usually聽
other much bigger consequences sometime can flow聽聽
[66]
is having your license suspended. So it's not聽
uncommon for me to receive calls from clients.聽聽

And hey, you know, I got a letter in the mail聽
saying my license is either pending suspension,聽聽
[78]
or actually suspended. And then the other thing聽
that happens sometimes people don't update their聽聽
[84]
address with the DMV. So they didn't get that聽
notice at all. And the first time they find out聽聽
[90]
their license is suspended is when they get聽
pulled over, maybe the copper in their plate聽聽
[95]
inside of their license suspended. Or maybe they聽
got pulled over for like speeding ticket and when聽聽
[100]
they went back and when their license. Turns out聽
that traffic ticket they can forget about three聽聽
[106]
months ago has not had a license suspended. So聽
now we have to deal with the original ticket. And聽聽
[113]
then you also have to deal with the new ticket聽
with problems also not included driving while聽聽
[120]
suspended. And at that point, you know, once you聽
receive the ticket for driving while suspended,聽聽
[126]
he really can't pay that ticket anymore. Not聽
that you should really should pay any traffic聽聽
[129]
tickets. But especially the drive was suspended聽
because in Louisiana, if you receive a ticket聽聽
[136]
for driving while suspended, and you pay it,聽
which is the same thing as pleading guilty,聽聽
[140]
then the Louisiana OMB will automatically suspend聽
your license for an additional year. So one thing聽聽
[148]
you might want to deal with when you first get a聽
ticket is, you know, if you want to take care of聽聽
[152]
yourself, if it's a simple speeding ticket, you聽
plan on traveling too fast, hey, just put it on聽聽
[156]
your calendar. But if there's something that you聽
think well, maybe I can help with or might be聽聽
[161]
out of town, you might just want to hire somebody聽
early on to take care of the tickets so that you聽聽
[166]
don't have to worry about it. Because sometimes聽
what happens is particularly tickets written by聽聽
[171]
state troopers can take a very, very long time to聽
enter the system. And so you will be calling the聽聽
[176]
court checking to see how much it is when I can聽
pay it. And because the tickets not there, people聽聽
[184]
just have a tendency to forget about it. And then聽
by the time they look up again, now they've missed聽聽
[189]
a court date. So one thing you do is just have聽
somebody else be responsible for a court date,聽聽
[194]
paying attention to keep you updated, what's going聽
on. But if you do ever miss your court date, I聽聽
[199]
mean, one of most important things is going to be聽
to go to court, get a new court date, and actually聽聽
[205]
start the process the sooner the better. I mean,聽
hopefully you can intervene before maybe your聽聽
[210]
license suspended or before you know they issued聽
a contempt find every course different, some do聽聽
[216]
it immediately. Some will give you a couple of聽
days a week 30 days that just really varies. If聽聽
[224]
