Thinkorswim Scans For Day Trading Stocks (Scanner Setup & Tips) - YouTube

Channel: Master the Market

[3]
hey what's going on everyone thanks for聽 checking out this video this is Travis聽聽
[6]
from Master the Market and i wanted to聽 make a quick video to talk a little bit聽聽
[10]
about scanning for day trading setups here in聽 the thinkorswim platform with td ameritrade聽聽
[16]
so before we get into the scans themselves i want聽 to say that even though i'm using thinkorswim聽聽
[20]
pretty much any scanner is going to have聽 similar criteria that you can plug in so聽聽
[24]
if you're using something like etrade pro or you聽 know a paid option like trade ideas or equity feed聽聽
[31]
or really anything along those lines you're going聽 to be able to apply pretty much the same criteria聽聽
[35]
and set up the same custom scans with those聽 as well so first and foremost what you do to聽聽
[41]
create a scan in thinkorswim is go up here to聽 the scan tab and from there what you're going聽聽
[46]
to want to do is click on this little icon聽 here followed by load and create scan query
[53]
and after that all you're going to have to do聽 is put in the criteria that i'm going to show聽聽
[57]
you here in just a moment and this is already聽 a scanner that i have created so i'm going to聽聽
[61]
go ahead and load this up and the first one that i聽 want to talk about is a low float scanner so this聽聽
[66]
is looking for stocks that have a limited amount聽 of shares to actually trade and you can think of聽聽
[70]
that as the supply for the stock and you can think聽 of the volume as the demand and stocks with a low聽聽
[76]
supply or in other words a low amount of shares聽 available to be traded in a high amount of volume聽聽
[81]
or a high amount of demand are going to be the聽 stocks that have the biggest potential for a huge聽聽
[86]
run so anytime you see a stock that's spiking聽 up you know maybe 100 or 200 percent even 500聽聽
[92]
or more in a short period of time whether that be聽 one day or you know a couple days or even a week聽聽
[98]
more often than not those are going to be stocks聽 that have a low number of outstanding shares聽聽
[102]
because in its simplest form what聽 that is is a low amount of supply聽聽
[107]
so really all this scan is looking for is first聽 anything in the 1 to 20 dollars per share range聽聽
[114]
now this is completely preference honestly i like聽 to trade stocks in this range uh but if you prefer聽聽
[119]
to trade stocks maybe below one dollar per share聽 or if you're somebody that trades higher price聽聽
[123]
stocks and you want to focus on twenty dollars聽 and up you can of course change these settings聽聽
[128]
to fit your personal preferences uh but after that聽 you're going to want to put in volume and you want聽聽
[133]
the minimum volume to be at least 100 000 shares聽 and in my opinion this should be pretty much the聽聽
[138]
bare minimum because anything below 100 000 shares聽 is going to be a very limited amount of liquidity聽聽
[145]
and that's going to cause a lot of聽 problems with your trading because聽聽
[148]
as you know there has to be somebody on the other聽 side of your trade so when you buy there has to聽聽
[152]
be somebody to sell you those shares and vice聽 versa when you sell there has to be somebody聽聽
[156]
to buy those shares from you and when there's a聽 very small amount of volume in a specific stock聽聽
[161]
more often than not you're going to have trouble聽 finding somebody on the other side of the trade聽聽
[166]
so 100 000 shares is the bare minimum and to be a聽 little bit more picky you can even boost this up聽聽
[170]
to you know 200 000 shares or even up to 500 000聽 or more shares now the next thing is going to be聽聽
[177]
the number of shares and again this is going back聽 to the supply for the stock we want this to be a聽聽
[182]
pretty low amount of supply because we want to聽 look for stocks with a lot of volatility and the聽聽
[187]
ones that have the biggest potential for a huge聽 spike in the near future so because of that i like聽聽
[192]
to put the maximum amount of shares outstanding聽 at 20 million shares anything below that is going聽聽
[197]
to be considered pretty low and again these are聽 the ones with potential for a lot of volatility聽聽
[202]
in the fourth and final study that we have down聽 here we're looking for unusual volume so we want聽聽
[207]
the current day's volume to be at least 50聽 percent greater than what it typically is聽聽
[212]
over the past 30 periods and you can go ahead and聽 select any period so you know if you want to look聽聽
[217]
over the past 30 minutes you would have 30 periods聽 selected but the period is representing one minute聽聽
[223]
um you can also have 30 periods selected but that聽 can be 35 minute periods but in this case we're聽聽
[229]
looking for volume to be at least 50 percent聽 greater than it is for an entire day over the聽聽
[235]
past 30 periods so now not only are we looking聽 for stocks with a limited amount of shares in a聽聽
[240]
limited supply but we're also looking for stocks聽 that are trading unusually large volume and more聽聽
[246]
often than not these are two things that you're聽 going to see with pretty much every single big聽聽
[249]
runner in the stock market so if we go ahead then聽 and click on scan you can see that we get our list聽聽
[255]
of stocks meeting this criteria and from there聽 you would obviously want to narrow this down a聽聽
[259]
little bit further and maybe look for stocks that聽 have some kind of news or press release or some聽聽
[264]
kind of upcoming news or press release and then聽 potentially look to take a trade based off of that聽聽
[271]
okay so the other scan that i want聽 to talk about is a very simple one聽聽
[274]
and this is actually going to be pretty much聽 just my idea of a top percent gainer scan聽聽
[280]
with just a few tweaks because i like to be a聽 little bit more specific with my scans than just聽聽
[285]
a general top percent gainers so in this case i聽 have stocks anywhere between 10 cents per share聽聽
[292]
all the way up to actually no maximum so anything聽 above 10 cents per share is going to fit into this聽聽
[297]
scanner now because we're looking for stocks that聽 are spiking up and they already have some kind of聽聽
[302]
gain i'm gonna go ahead and boost this minimum聽 percent change up to just two percent i'm going聽聽
[308]
to show you how to actually arrange these so聽 that way you're looking at the biggest gainers聽聽
[312]
but then the last thing that we have down here is聽 just volume again at a minimum of 100 000 shares聽聽
[318]
and all you have to do then is click on scan again聽 and this is going to give you the largest percent聽聽
[323]
gainers now the way that you have this listed from聽 the top percent gainers down is just make sure聽聽
[328]
that you click on percent change up here at the聽 top um and it's going to maybe first list them as聽聽
[333]
the smallest gainers up to the largest gainers but聽 you want to have the largest gainers up at the top聽聽
[338]
so if you click on that again it's going to do聽 just that and again this is pretty much just聽聽
[342]
a top percent gainer scan just in this case聽 we're looking for a minimum amount of shares聽聽
[347]
so that's going to remove the stocks that are only聽 trading a couple thousand shares here and there聽聽
[351]
and also because i'm a little bit picky and i聽 don't want to trade stocks below 10 cents per聽聽
[355]
share it's also factoring that in and removing聽 those stocks from the scan and believe it or聽聽
[360]
not these two very simple scanners are pretty much聽 the only ones that i use for my intraday scanning聽聽
[366]
for the most part i trade a lot of stocks that are聽 here on the top percent gainers list because these聽聽
[370]
are stocks that more often than not have some kind聽 of news or press release that was very recently聽聽
[375]
released on top of that they usually have a lot of聽 volume which is associated with that news or press聽聽
[380]
release and they also have a lot of volatility and聽 generally speaking when it comes to day trading聽聽
[386]
the two things that you want to see are volatility聽 and volume so now that we have the scans聽聽
[391]
themselves covered i want to actually give you a聽 few tips to actually use this sidebar over here so聽聽
[396]
that way you can look at your scans in real time聽 while you're doing your trading and while you're聽聽
[400]
analyzing charts without having to switch back聽 between you know the trade tab and the chart tab聽聽
[405]
as well as the scan tab that we're on right now so聽 one thing that many people don't know is that over聽聽
[410]
here on the sidebar you can click on this plus聽 button down here to actually add a watch list and聽聽
[416]
in that watch list it's going to have a default聽 watch list saved in there but you can actually add聽聽
[420]
in any of your scanners that you created and saved聽 right here on the scan tab so what you're going to聽聽
[425]
want to do is click on this default scanner that聽 it has pulled up and from there you're going to聽聽
[430]
go to personal and anything under personal is a聽 scanner that you created on your own and saved聽聽
[436]
so just a reminder to actually save this scanner聽 after you put in this criteria um and all you have聽聽
[441]
to do is click on the same button up here that you聽 clicked on to make the scanner in the first place聽聽
[445]
and then go ahead and save that so that way聽 you're not going to have to put in this criteria聽聽
[449]
every time you open the platform back up and on聽 top of that it's going to be saved so that way聽聽
[454]
you can open it up over here on the sidebar and聽 it's going to show up under personal uh so for聽聽
[459]
example if we go ahead and take this top percent聽 gainers one that we just talked about a moment ago聽聽
[464]
and you can see that now we have this pulled up聽 over here on the sidebar now one thing that i聽聽
[469]
don't like by default about these scanners and聽 watch lists over here on the sidebar is the way聽聽
[473]
that they're arranged so i'm going to click on聽 this little settings icon to the right of the聽聽
[477]
ask and i'm going to go ahead and customize this聽 now i personally like to focus on the percent聽聽
[483]
change rather than the net change so i'm going聽 to go ahead and remove that as well as the bid聽聽
[489]
and the ask and instead i'm going to go ahead聽 and add the percent change as well as the volume
[499]
and then i'm going to go ahead and click on ok聽 and you can see that now our scanner is going聽聽
[504]
to show us the symbol it's going to show us the聽 last price that the stock traded at it's going聽聽
[508]
to show us the percent change and last but not聽 least it's going to show us the volume over here聽聽
[515]
so again this is very useful if you are you know聽 doing some trading or chart analysis and you want聽聽
[520]
to keep an eye on your scanners at the same time聽 without having to switch between these two tabs聽聽
[525]
now another really cool thing is that you can聽 actually go ahead and widen this sidebar out a bit聽聽
[531]
you can actually link all of these different聽 tools together which is really going to help聽聽
[535]
you save a lot of time when doing your analysis聽 and when looking for some trade setup so if we go聽聽
[540]
ahead and set these all to yellow or number two聽 under this little link feature on these tools
[551]
now anytime a stock pops up on聽 our watch list or on our scanner聽聽
[554]
if we click on that stock you can see聽 it's also going to pull up a quick chart聽聽
[559]
and it's also going to pull up the most recent聽 news for that stock so if you wanted to read the聽聽
[563]
news and see what is causing the stock to spike聽 up you just click on it and it's going to have聽聽
[567]
that article right there pop up for you to read聽 so the last thing that i want to talk about is a聽聽
[574]
way for you to actually narrow down the stocks聽 that are pulling up on your scanners to a much聽聽
[578]
smaller list that you're going to be able to聽 put a little bit more of your attention into聽聽
[583]
uh so to narrow that down even further you can go聽 ahead over here to the sidebar and add in another聽聽
[588]
watch list and this time we're going to go ahead聽 on default and create watch list and just go ahead聽聽
[594]
and give it any kind of name i'm going to go聽 ahead and call this november 2nd watch list and聽聽
[602]
all you have to do is add in any symbols that聽 were popping up on your scanner that you think聽聽
[606]
are going to be a potential day trade in the near聽 future so uh we'll just take this example here sup
[614]
uh we'll take e i g i
[620]
we'll add dgly
[624]
and let's take acor and then go ahead and聽 click on save and again just like we did聽聽
[630]
up here you can also adjust the columns聽 to have the last price the percent change聽聽
[634]
and the volume instead of the net change the bid聽 and the ask and now not only do you have your聽聽
[640]
scanners over here on the sidebar but you have a聽 more narrowed down list of the best stocks that聽聽
[644]
are actually hitting that scanner and for me i聽 think that's a really great way to kind of narrow聽聽
[648]
down your scans and to have a readily available聽 list of the stocks that you're looking to trade聽聽
[654]
so anyway i hope you found this video helpful聽 and let me know if you try out these scans聽聽
[658]
and how they work out for you if you're interested聽 in learning how to day trade swing trade or even聽聽
[662]
long term invest you can find more information聽 on that at my website master the market which聽聽
[667]
will be the first website link down below in the聽 description and if you enjoyed the video please聽聽
[671]

[676]
but anyway thank you again for watching i hope聽 you enjoyed and good luck with your trading
