Thumbs up for a beer? - YouTube

One of the things you’re routinely told about Germany is that if you want one beer,
[4]
you hold up your thumb.
[6]
Because that is how you signal ā€œoneā€.
[10]
Is that true?
[11]
This has become a particularly popular fact
[14]
after the release of the movie ā€œInglourious Basterdsā€.
[17]
And although that was a long time ago I should in fairness mention
[21]
that I am about the reveal a major plot point.
[26]
In one scene, a British spy blows his cover
[28]
by asking for three glasses and showing three fingers,
[32]
when the German way is to show a thumb and two fingers.
[36]
From that, it seems that people have inferred
[39]
that if you want to order one of something, you give the thumbs-up sign.
[43]
It’s logical... but...
[45]
If you’re German, I’m going to have to ask you to help me out here,
[48]
because personally, I have never in my life
[51]
ever seen a German order a beer, or anything else, like this.
[56]
If you think about it for just one moment, though,
[59]
it’s not a very good way of ordering anything at all.
[63]
If you see somebody stick some fingers in the air,
[66]
what are you supposed to think?
[68]
And even if it ever was a way of ordering a beer,
[70]
what kind of beer are you ordering?
[73]
A lager? A wheat beer? A pilsner? A kƶlsch?
[77]
Or is the server just supposed to magically know?
[81]
In the movie, the character actually asks for three whisky glasses
[85]
in excellent German,
[87]
but gives himself away by accompanying that with an unusual hand-gesture.
[92]
If only he’d kept his hand down, he might have got away with it.
[96]
Remember the context of the movie: it’s wartime.
[100]
Under normal circumstances, I suspect that this gesture wouldn’t be a big deal;
[105]
but in the middle of a war,
[107]
people are going to be very wary of anything that seems a bit unusual.
[112]
You also need to bear in mind that the character is already under suspicion:
[117]
the officer he’s talking to has already noticed his slightly odd accent.
[122]
The correct way to order one beer is to say that you’re ordering one beer:
[127]
how else are you going to do it?
[129]
If you want to accompany that with a gesture, then that’s fine;
[132]
and as far as I know, nobody cares if it’s your index finger.
[136]
The gesture that I use is a vague wave of the hand
[140]
to attract the attention of the server.
[143]
I do find, having lived in Germany for nearly 25 years,
[146]
that I have started counting 1-2-3 like this,
[149]
which appears to be a habit I have unconsciously picked up.
[152]
So... I think there must be some truth in it,
[155]
because I don’t think this habit comes from nowhere.
[158]
But that is as far as it goes.
[162]
You just try counting 4 using three fingers and one thumb.
[168]
I can’t do it.
[170]
But of course, ā€œInglourious Basterdsā€ is set during the Second World War,
[173]
and things have changed a bit since then.
[175]
In Germany, this means exactly the same as it does all over the western world.
[180]
And with Hollywood movies popular over here,
[183]
I’m sure many Germans have seen 1-2-3;
[186]
possibly more than once.
[188]
In short, I don’t think that this will necessarily mark you out as a foreigner.
[193]
But if you are in Nazi Germany,
[195]
and a Gestapo officer already thinks there’s something not quite right about you...
[202]
...it could mean trouble.
[204]
On a personal note, I’m sorry I didn’t get this video done sooner,
[208]
but on the day that I’d set aside for filming it,
[211]
I was trapped in another town
[214]
by a storm which had flooded the railway and roads.
[217]
We’re completely fine, and our house was unscathed.
[220]
But many other homes and businesses in the area were not so lucky,
[225]
with damage estimated in the tens of millions.
[228]
Things are getting back to normal now,
[230]
but the clean-up operation is likely to last for months.
[234]
And although it is only a small thing,
[236]
I wouldn’t be a good neighbour if I didn’t at least let you know how to make a donation,
[241]
if you wish to.
[243]
Especially since the fire brigades around here are all staffed by volunteers.
