WOW! ETHAN KLEIN BANNED?! Gambling Crackdown, Dan Crenshaw, US Census Bureau, & More - YouTube
Channel: Philip DeFranco
[0]
- So Trey, this is very important.
[2]
What do you want to say to the people?
[4]
- I just wanna play my game, okay?
[7]
I want my,
[9]
there.
[11]
(giggles) bye-bye.
[12]
(Philip laughs)
[14]
(door slams)
[17]
- [Trey] What's the
code to your iPad again?
[18]
(Philip laughs evilly)
[21]
- 'Sup, you beautiful bastards.
[22]
Welcome back to the Philip DeFranco show.
[24]
The number one news show according to me.
[26]
Hit that like button,
subscribe, all the good stuff
[29]
to feed the algorithm gods,
[30]
and let's just jump into it.
[31]
First up today, let's talk
about some entertainment
[33]
slash content creator news.
[35]
First here, we had Twitch
and gambling in the news.
[37]
Right, we talked about in the past,
[38]
Ethan Klein's been calling out creators
[40]
for streaming gambling
content on their platform.
[42]
With Ethan from the H3 podcasts,
[43]
like others think that it's
dangerous to promote gambling
[45]
to potentially young audiences.
[47]
With people like Pokimane
also saying that it's sketchy.
[49]
But also a lot of people
have been very successful
[51]
with their gambling content,
[52]
including the likes of
Adin Ross and Trainwrecks
[55]
as well, as xQc who previously
did gambling streams
[57]
who no longer does.
[58]
With some of them being very vocal,
[60]
spoken out in defense of those
kinds of streams as well.
[62]
While that essentially played out
[64]
in the court of public opinion,
[65]
It also looks like Twitch
is now drawing a line.
[67]
Now posting an update saying
to prevent harm and scams
[70]
created by questionable gambling services
[71]
that sponsor content on Twitch,
[73]
We will prohibit sharing
links and or referral codes
[75]
to sites that offer slots,
roulette, or dice games.
[78]
But also adding they're
going to continue to monitor
[80]
the gambling related content,
[81]
and update their approach as needed.
[82]
And adding that this ban will
be effective August 17th,
[84]
giving creators a week to
remove that kind of content.
[86]
And here's the thing,
[87]
there are reactions,
people happy, people angry,
[90]
but, there still is an issue for those
[92]
that are even happy to see this.
[94]
Right, because this ban
does lessen the incentive
[96]
to do gambling streams,
[97]
by no means does it mean
that it's the end of them
[99]
on the platform.
[100]
With people like Asmongold tweeted,
[102]
Twitch's new rules for
gambling don't do anything
[104]
other than pay lip service to
concern while still profiting.
[107]
No age gate,
[107]
can link to Twitter slash Linktree,
[109]
just like Onlyfans girls
do for affiliate codes,
[112]
can still do sponsored streams
and stream gambling content.
[115]
Right, if you're someone
that's been sponsored
[116]
by these platforms,
[117]
you've had the incentive of like,
[119]
"Okay, this is how much we
make when people sign up."
[121]
from a pure business standpoint,
[122]
all these content creators have to do,
[124]
is now renegotiate a better flat rate deal
[126]
Right, to use made up numbers,
[128]
'cause I've heard that the
actual numbers are much bigger.
[130]
So you normally get paid
a hundred thousand dollars
[132]
to do a stream, and then based
off of your referral code,
[134]
you get an additional 50,000,
another hundred thousand.
[136]
Right, depending on how you've
recently been performing,
[138]
that could easily be
negotiated into a flat rate.
[140]
But, also in other news,
[141]
then it's probably going to
take his focus away from this.
[143]
We have Ethan Klein in the news,
[145]
and that is because the H3 podcast
[147]
is actually at risk of
getting banned off of YouTube.
[149]
With the H3 podcast tweeting yesterday,
[151]
"We're very sad to announce
we can't post on YouTube
[153]
for seven days."
[154]
With it being said that his channel's
[155]
been hit with two strikes,
[156]
which, yes, then now it
limits what he can do
[158]
with the channel, but also,
[159]
that puts him one away
[160]
from everything going kablooey.
[162]
Also, I think that's the
first time I've ever said
[164]
the word "Kablooey."
[165]
Now. with that, there's
also a big drama aspect
[167]
to this story between
he and another creator
[169]
by the name of Keemstar,
[170]
not going to really dive into
that aspect of the story.
[172]
It involves a lot of finger pointing,
[173]
people, calling each other snitches,
[175]
but, you know, at the end of the day,
[176]
in general, I think it's
gonna be an interesting thing
[177]
to watch, especially
as YouTube cracks down
[180]
on different places,
[181]
and there's constantly the criticism
[182]
that they don't do it equally.
[183]
But also, I think it's
just yet another story,
[185]
whether you're a small or a big creator,
[187]
it's so incredibly important to diversify.
[189]
I mean, it's part of the reason
why we've started spreading
[191]
parts of the show on Snapchat.
[192]
We're getting crazy numbers over there.
[195]
TikTok as well, exclusive content.
[197]
Facebook stuff's coming
back relatively soon.
[199]
Hell, we've got the
newsletter going strong
[201]
for our apparel company,
[203]
we've got like 200,000
people on a mailing list.
[205]
Do not marry or ever
rely on any one platform
[208]
because they do not care about you.
[209]
Like I'm sure, yeah, they "Appreciate" us,
[211]
but the moment that you can
negatively impact the company
[214]
or even inconvenience them,
[216]
obviously they would
throw you to the side.
[217]
Then, in big and fantastic news.
[219]
If you're a supporter and you
love "Legalize Marijuana",
[222]
because if it is legal where you live,
[223]
it is now easier to get.
[225]
Right, so in case you're not aware.
[226]
Apple previously banned
apps that encourage, quote,
[228]
"the consumption of
tobacco and vape products,
[230]
illegal drugs, or excessive
amounts of alcohol,
[233]
as well as those that facilitated the sale
[235]
of controlled substances,
marijuana or tobacco."
[237]
But, it actually changed
its policy on June 7th
[239]
to make exceptions for
licensed pharmacies,
[241]
as well as licensed or otherwise
[243]
legal cannabis dispensaries.
[244]
And so among the things we've seen,
[245]
a month later, we saw
Apple approve the Eaze app,
[247]
the first cannabis delivery
app on the App store.
[250]
Since then, several other
delivery services have joined,
[252]
and finally on Wednesday, we saw Weedmaps,
[254]
which is essentially like
the Grubhub for weed,
[256]
updating its app to allow
customers to purchase directly
[258]
from local dispensaries
through its platform.
[260]
Right, so this is big, big news,
[262]
Weedmaps CTO praising this,
calling is a game changer.
[265]
But also, of note, this
is not a universal change
[267]
like Google on the other
hand, still bans apps
[269]
that facilitate weed sales.
[271]
But, now that we've seen
this shift from Apple,
[272]
you have to wonder, is it
more of like a domino effect?
[274]
Will we see others soon follow?
[276]
Also, when we're talking about app stores,
[277]
we should definitely talk about now,
[278]
a bipartisan group of
senators introducing a bill
[280]
that would essentially ban
App stores like Apple's
[283]
and Google's from requiring
in-app commission fees on sale.
[286]
And this is potentially huge.
[287]
For the past year, both
companies have been embroiled
[289]
in a series of lawsuits
by Fortnite developer,
[291]
Epic Games for charging
a 30% commission fee
[293]
on all in-app sales.
[295]
Or you have Epic saying
these fees are essentially
[296]
highway robberies, since
Apple and Google dominate
[299]
the App store marketplace.
[300]
But, Apple and Google
have argued that the fees
[302]
are necessary to make sure that consumers
[303]
are downloading secure apps.
[305]
And well, yes, this seems
to have stirred up a change,
[307]
eventually seeing Google
and apple reducing
[309]
their app store fees somewhat,
[310]
it was still not enough to
stop 36 days from filing
[312]
an antitrust lawsuit
against Google last month.
[314]
But now, with this, we're
seeing the federal government
[316]
also getting involved.
[317]
And that's because if passed into law,
[319]
a bill unveiled by democratic
Senator Richard Blumenthal
[321]
yesterday would bar
companies from requiring
[323]
that in-app purchases go
through their app stores
[325]
ensuring that those stores
couldn't punish apps
[327]
that offer different prices or conditions
[329]
through a different app
store or payment system.
[331]
Notably, both democratic
Senator Amy Klobuchar,
[333]
as well as Republican
Senator Marsha Blackburn
[335]
have signed onto this bill.
[336]
So, potentially big
changes to keep an eye on.
[339]
Then, we had Republican
representative Dan Crenshaw
[341]
in the news and trending
because he had the audacity,
[344]
to acknowledge that Donald
Trump lost the election
[346]
in front of Republicans, and uh,
[348]
who could have ever
predicted that the leopard
[349]
you let out at the zoo would
eventually eat your face.
[352]
- Don't kid yourself into
believing that's why we lost.
[355]
It's not. It's not.
[357]
- [Crowd Member] You're wrong.
[358]
- I'll tell you openly.
[359]
- [Crowd Member] You're wrong.
[360]
- And I'm not wrong.
[361]
- Yes you are.
- Five states,
[362]
I have plenty of proof.
[364]
I have proof in Arizona,
[365]
Pennsylvania, and Georgia,
- Yeah I know, you told me
[366]
you did markup of,
[367]
- Yeah.
- How did that turned out?
[368]
- [Crowd Member] And guess what?
[369]
It's going to turn out
and it's going to flip.
[371]
- Okay.
- You watch,
[372]
you're gonna see
[373]
- It won't. It won't.
- where it stands.
[374]
And you got to flip all
five states to make it work.
[376]
- [Crowd Member] You
know how they're stealing
[377]
the elections?
[378]
- Alright, I'm not gonna hear this.
[380]
I'm not gonna have have to hear this.
[381]
(Dan Crenshaw speaks indistinctly)
[385]
- He was right, I guess.
[387]
- [Dan] But that Trump
won? No, absolutely not.
[389]
- You'll see.
- Absolutely not.
[391]
- Five different states?
- Yeah.
[392]
- [Dan] Hundreds of thousands of votes?
[394]
- Yeah.
- You're kidding yourself.
[395]
- What I'll say to Dan here, is like,
[396]
I do and I don't feel bad for him.
[398]
Like it's literally the
lowest bar you could have
[400]
for someone, but I commend him
[401]
for not promoting election lies,
[403]
but when you don't actively
call out the insanity
[405]
that exists in your party,
[407]
because you want to remain
elected, you allow it to grow.
[409]
And then later after you've
let it grow and fester
[412]
and become a bigger part of your party,
[413]
you decide, "Oh, I'm
gonna, I'm gonna dip my toe
[415]
back into the real world and into sanity."
[418]
Of course, they're going
to bite your face off.
[419]
Also quickly on this topic,
[421]
A quick shout out to
MyPillow CEO, Mike Lindell,
[424]
you fucking hilarious,
sad, dangerous joke.
[427]
It was this so-called "Cyber symposium"
[430]
was going to prove the
election was rigged and stolen.
[432]
And genuinely, almost all of
the reporting coming out of it
[435]
is like, "This is just
a weird fucking mess
[437]
that accomplished nothing
and showed nothing."
[439]
Also ultimately resulting
in a headline reading,
[441]
"Mike Lindell fled the
stage at his cyber symposium
[444]
at the same time news broke that
[446]
Dominion's billion-dollar
defamation lawsuit
[448]
against him would proceed."
[449]
But from that,
[450]
I wanna take a quick second to thank
[451]
the fantastic sponsor of
today's show, SeatGeek.
[453]
And most of you know,
I've worked with SeatGeek
[455]
for a long time,
[456]
and I'm super excited to
be working with them again.
[458]
One, because they're a fantastic partner,
[460]
and two, because that
means we're getting closer
[462]
and closer to getting back to normal.
[463]
I remember live events, going
to sporting events, concerts,
[466]
artists' exhibits,
festival, standup comedy,
[468]
and the list goes on and on.
[470]
But our friends at SeatGeek
have all the tickets
[472]
to get you back out there whenever
[473]
you personally write it.
[474]
And SeatGeek has your back,
[475]
by putting all the tickets
from across the web
[477]
in one place to make buying simple.
[478]
So, whether it's next week or next year,
[480]
you can find any and all of
the tickets that you want
[483]
even rate each ticket from zero to 10,
[484]
so, you know, if you're
getting a good deal or not,
[486]
it's as simple as green
means good, red means bad.
[488]
And you hit $20 off your
first purchase by using
[490]
code "PHIL" at checkout.
[492]
That's $20 off your first
purchase with promo code "Phil",
[495]
click that link down below,
[496]
download the app and get started today.
[498]
And in big names popping
up in the news because
[500]
of something they said around
COVID-19, masks, vaccinations.
[504]
Yes, around 48 hours ago,
you had a lot of people
[506]
talking about Chet Hanks.
[507]
Right, that man-child whose
notoriety is pretty much
[509]
based around the question,
"Wow, isn't it weird that
[511]
Tom Hanks raised both Colin
Hanks and Chet Hanks?"
[515]
That's strange, maybe you can't raise
[516]
the stupid out of someone.
[518]
Right, in an Instagram video,
he came out as anti-vax
[520]
in, pretty much the
douchiest way you could,
[521]
he acted like you should get the vaccine
[523]
'cause you care about people.
[524]
And then he was like, "ha, ha, sike!"
[525]
But the counter to that
in the new news cycle,
[527]
is you have Arnold Schwarzenegger's
name in the headlines
[530]
because of something he said
about vaccinations, masks,
[532]
social distancing.
[533]
- That is a virus, you. It kills people.
[536]
And the only way we prevented
this is, to get vaccinated,
[540]
to wear masks, to do social distancing,
[543]
washing your hands all the time
and not just to think about,
[547]
"Well, my freedom is being
kind of disturbed here."
[550]
No, screw your freedom.
[553]
Because with freedom comes applications
[555]
and have responsibilities.
[558]
We cannot just say, I have
the right to do X, Y, and Z,
[561]
When you affect other people.
[564]
That is when it gets serious.
[565]
It's the freedom to wear no mask,
[567]
but you know, something, you're a schmuck,
[569]
for not wearing a mask.
[570]
Because you are not supposed
to protect your fellow members
[573]
around you.
[573]
Right, well, you may be tired,
[575]
and I already definitely
am tired of the fact
[578]
that we're still having
debates over the vaccine.
[580]
And like people needing
to get the vaccine.
[582]
This conversation,
unfortunately not gonna be
[583]
going away for a while.
[584]
Right, there's always a concern,
[585]
we're seeing even new
reports about how long
[587]
will the vaccine be effective.
[589]
Because of places like Axios have noted,
[590]
All the COVID vaccines
continue to offer almost
[592]
100% protection against death,
[594]
and extremely strong protection
against serious illness.
[597]
But, a growing body of research
shows that the vaccines
[599]
are losing some potency
against milder infection.
[601]
with Pfizer itself saying that it believes
[603]
that it's vaccines are losing around
[604]
six percentage points of
efficacy every two months.
[606]
And preliminary findings
from the Mayo clinic,
[608]
which, yes have not
yet been peer-reviewed,
[610]
show that the Pfizer vaccine
is preventing significantly
[612]
fewer infections now than
before the Delta variant,
[614]
with a smaller drop in Moderna's efficacy.
[616]
Once again, to sandwich that section,
[618]
because misinformation can spread,
[619]
and there can be misunderstanding.
[621]
The numbers still show immense
overwhelming protection
[623]
from death and serious illness.
[626]
Which is why you've likely seen headlines,
[627]
And we'll see more in the future about
[629]
potential booster shots.
[630]
And also this is happening
at a time where parents
[631]
and doctors have voicing concerns about
[633]
the growing number of
children catching the virus.
[635]
Right, children have largely been spared
[636]
from the worst of COVID
[637]
as hospitalizations and deaths
among kids are very rare.
[640]
But, you have people noting
that without a vaccine
[642]
that's authorized for those under 12,
[643]
they remain vulnerable.
[644]
And according to the CDC,
nearly 1600 kids with COVID
[646]
were hospitalized last week,
[648]
marking a new seven-day record
[649]
and, a 27% increase from the week before.
[652]
On top of that, children also
accounted for roughly 15%
[654]
of all newly reported cases
across the nation last week
[656]
with data showing that
nearly 94,000 child cases
[659]
were recorded, a 31%
increase over the roughly
[661]
72,000 cases a week prior.
[663]
And with that, we are seeing reports
[664]
about children's hospitals
reaching capacity.
[666]
For example, Tennessee's
health commissioner expects
[668]
the state's children's hospitals
be full by the week's end.
[671]
While, Louisiana reached that
point more than a week ago.
[673]
And that is presenting
challenges because like,
[675]
when infection surge
among adults last year,
[677]
many hospitals delayed elective
procedures to make room
[679]
and brought in temporary staff to help.
[681]
But, experts have noted
that pediatric patients
[683]
require specialized staff and equipment.
[686]
And for them virtually
no procedure is elective.
[688]
And on top of that,
hospitals are also dealing
[690]
with more kids who have
developed mental health problems
[692]
stemming from social isolation,
[693]
along with others who
already deferred medical care
[695]
during the peak of the outbreak last year.
[697]
That's why with all of this going on,
[698]
we're seeing people like the president
[699]
of the American Academy
of Pediatrics saying,
[701]
"It's really important to make
sure that we are approaching
[703]
authorization with the COVID
vaccine for our youngest
[705]
children with the same urgency
that we did in adults."
[708]
Also, regarding that there
are currently clinical trials
[710]
happening among younger age groups,
[712]
and the FDA has asked for six
months of followup safety data
[714]
instead of the two months that
had asked for with adults,
[716]
which is also why some experts
believe that the Agency
[718]
is moving unnecessarily
slow because it's listening
[721]
too closely to critics
[722]
when they don't have the luxury of time.
[724]
Which is why we saw the AAP
send a letter to the FDA
[726]
last week, urging it to use
initial trial dates, saying,
[729]
"Waiting on a six month follow
up will significantly hinder
[731]
the ability to reduce the
spread of the hyper infectious
[733]
COVID-19 Delta variant."
[735]
But still, the US surgeon
general said on Wednesday
[737]
that the FDA will move
quickly to evaluate data
[739]
from vaccine companies once it is ready,
[741]
saying, that it understands
what is at stake.
[743]
And saying with that, it is
possible that a COVID-19 vaccine
[745]
will be available for
kids under the age of 12
[747]
before the end of 2021.
[749]
But, we are going to have to wait to see.
[751]
In the meantime, the spread
among kids is expected
[753]
to get worse in the coming weeks,
[755]
especially as many
areas go back to school.
[757]
And the last thing that I'll
mention with this COVID news,
[759]
even though there's so much more,
[760]
Yeah, the FDA now expected
to expand the emergency use
[763]
of Pfizer and Moderna
to authorize third shots
[765]
for immunocompromised people.
[767]
And this anticipated decision
could mean that third doses
[769]
will be available to those who qualify
[771]
as soon as this weekend.
[772]
Right, and this comes as
studies have found that unlike
[774]
the majority of vaccinated Americans,
[775]
the shots are not as effective for some
[777]
immunocompromised folks who have trouble
[778]
developing antibodies.
[780]
Right, and according to
recent data from the CDC,
[781]
while immunocompromised
people make up only around
[783]
2.7% percent of the US adult population,
[786]
they represent around 44%
[787]
of COVID breakthrough hospitalizations.
[789]
And drawing from four small studies,
[791]
The CDC found at 33% to 50%
of immuno-suppressed patients
[794]
who did not have any
detectable antibody response
[796]
after their first two shots
developed an antibody response
[799]
after getting a third dose.
[800]
Now, notably with this,
some experts have argued
[802]
that the immunocompromised
population is too diverse,
[804]
create a uniform booster
recommendation, right?
[807]
While some are protected by the two shots,
[808]
others won't benefit
from a third shot at all.
[810]
Many falling in between,
[812]
but, still you have doctors
arguing that a sweeping mandate
[814]
is still preferable to
having people trying to get
[816]
third shots illegally,
[817]
which, is actually already happening.
[818]
According to an internal CDC
document obtained by ABC News,
[822]
an estimated 1.1 million Pfizer
and Moderna recipients alone
[825]
have received additional shots.
[826]
But yeah, consider all of that,
your daily dose of poison.
[831]
So yeah.
[832]
A lot, happening.
[833]
Then we should probably
talk about this morning,
[835]
The Census Bureau released
long awaited data used
[837]
to redraw congressional
districts that can not only
[839]
determine control of the
house in the 2022 elections,
[841]
but, shape electoral advantages
and state level policies
[844]
for the next decade.
[845]
Now, among other things
found very notably, that data
[848]
showed the population
growth in the last decade
[850]
was driven by minorities,
[851]
and that the white population
has actually fallen
[853]
for the first time, since
the count began in 1790.
[855]
And while that is very significant,
[857]
what I want to focus on
today is specifically
[859]
what happens next in this process.
[860]
Right, so the data which
shows which counties, cities,
[863]
and neighborhoods either
gained or lost people
[864]
in the 2020 Census count
is officially supposed
[866]
to be used to ensure that
each district has around
[868]
the same number of people.
[869]
But unfortunately, many
politicians in charge
[871]
of drawing the maps
often use the opportunity
[873]
to gerrymander the lines,
[874]
to combine voters in a way
that helps their parties
[876]
win future elections.
[877]
And very notably here, as was
the case up to the 2010 census
[880]
Republicans will have way
more power in this decade's
[882]
redistricting process.
[883]
According to reports, the GOP has control
[885]
over redrawing maps in
20 states that make up
[887]
187 US house seats.
[889]
This including growing
states like Texas, Florida,
[891]
and North Carolina, which
all gained new seats
[893]
in this latest count.
[894]
Meanwhile, Democrats only
have control over the process
[896]
in just eight states.
[897]
That account for 75 seats states
like New York and Illinois,
[900]
which actually both lost seats.
[902]
And rather notably part of
the reason that Democrats
[904]
actually have less power is because
[904]
several democratic-led states have created
[907]
independent nonpartisan commissions
[909]
to draw the district lines.
[910]
But, regardless, not
going into a deep dive
[912]
specifically on that.
[914]
The main thing is that Republicans
had a strong advantage.
[916]
One that could easily
help them gain the mere
[918]
five additional seats that
they need to take control
[919]
of the house in 2022.
[921]
And making matters even
worse for Democrats
[922]
is the fact that the accuracy
of account has been hampered
[925]
by the pandemic and
unprecedented interference
[927]
from the Trump Administration.
[928]
Right, in addition to
heightened concerns over
[930]
how historically
under-counted groups were,
[931]
with the lack of door-knockers
during the pandemic,
[934]
the Trump administration also
did everything they could do
[936]
to make sure that certain
people weren't counted.
[938]
That including trying to cut count short
[939]
before it was fully completed,
[941]
attempting to prevent major
populations from being counted.
[943]
And so as a result, experts say, yes,
[944]
we should expect tons of
lawsuits, incredibly messy
[947]
legal battles playing out
all across the country.
[950]
But, because the timeline
is what it is right now,
[951]
the battles over redistricting,
[953]
I mean, they very well may not be resolved
[955]
before the midterms.
[956]
I mean, hell, normally
redistricting totals are delivered
[958]
in April, but pandemic
delays have pushed the timer,
[960]
and, left states scrambling
to set new boundaries.
[962]
So as a result, some
states with early primaries
[965]
are facing the possibility of changing
[966]
their entire election calendars
[967]
and, postponing long-held primary dates
[969]
and, certain states with
local elections as well
[971]
like New Jersey and
Virginia are reportedly
[973]
using their old maps.
[974]
So I know at least for me,
[975]
it feels like I'm starting to
overuse the term "shitshow,"
[978]
but if it looks like one
and it smells like one,
[980]
whew, I mean, we'll have to wait and see.
[982]
Also, I mean, here's a question.
[984]
Will there be like a one to 3% difference
[987]
in who votes for what,
[988]
with how many people
have died from COVID-19
[990]
over the past year and a half?
[991]
I mean, it's kind of a random side note,
[993]
but like in Florida, more
people have died in that state
[996]
than the difference in votes
that allowed Ron DeSantis
[998]
to win the state's 2018
gubernatorial race.
[1000]
I don't know we're going
to keep our eyes on it,
[1001]
but, prepare for a mess.
[1003]
And ultimately with
this story, or honestly,
[1005]
anything else that stood out to you today,
[1006]
I'd love to know your
thoughts in those comments
[1007]
down below, because yes,
this is a news show,
[1009]
but it's also a conversation.
[1011]
But, with that said, of course, as always,
[1012]
thanks for watching,
[1013]
liking, subscribing,
and all the good stuff.
[1015]
My name's Philip DeFranco
you've just been filled in.
[1018]
I love your faces and
I'll see you next time.
