Crypto Scams to Avoid - 10 Tricks Scammers Use - YouTube
Channel: Whiteboard Crypto
[0]
if you're new to the world of crypto i'm gonna聽
say it's pretty complicated just seven months ago聽聽
[5]
i set up my very first metamask wallet and then聽
deposited some ethereum contrast that today i'm聽聽
[11]
actually writing smart contracts but back then聽
i knew absolutely nothing about how many scams聽聽
[16]
there were out there in fact i lost a decent聽
amount of money probably somewhere around five聽聽
[21]
thousand dollars due to certain scams that i fell聽
prey to the cool thing about the blockchain is聽聽
[27]
is that the information is available to everyone聽
so technically i could even share the transactions聽聽
[32]
with you where i lost the money welcome to聽
whiteboard crypto the number one youtube channel聽聽
[36]
for crypto education and here we explain topics of聽
the cryptocurrency world using analogies stories聽聽
[42]
and examples so that you can easily understand聽
them in this video we're going to explain some of聽聽
[47]
the most common crypto scams including one that's聽
so new you probably haven't even heard of it yet聽聽
[53]
and of course how to avoid them so let's dig聽
into the top 10 worst scams inside the world聽聽
[58]
wide web 3 that you might encounter number one聽
is any website asking for your private keys聽聽
[64]
do you remember the first time you set up a crypto聽
wallet you probably didn't know if you were even聽聽
[69]
doing things correctly and everything was really聽
complicated well at least it was for me scammers聽聽
[74]
take advantage of this all the time the trick聽
is very simple they ask you for your personal聽聽
[79]
information specifically for something called your聽
private key now it's really sad to me how many聽聽
[84]
scammers out there take advantage of someone's聽
lack of knowledge and then try to get you to tell聽聽
[89]
them your seed phrase by doing this they are聽
actually getting access to all of your crypto聽聽
[94]
funds some of these scammers might say things like聽
hey i want to send you some money what's your key聽聽
[98]
or even something like hey you just won one聽
whole ethereum tell us your seed phrase so we聽聽
[102]
can deposit the funds in your account they'll聽
try every trick possible to fool newbies into聽聽
[107]
giving them access to their funds when it comes聽
to crypto you actually get two keys a private key聽聽
[113]
that you should never ever share and a public key聽
that is kind of like your email address this one聽聽
[118]
you intentionally share many people confuse these聽
which leads them to getting scammed you can learn聽聽
[123]
more about both of these by watching our video on聽
asymmetric encryption which is a complicated topic聽聽
[128]
that we break down so simple your grandpa could聽
understand the next scam we have is number two聽聽
[134]
asking to invest for you as a trusted creator so聽
the second trick is something that might be used聽聽
[140]
to if you've looked down in the comments聽
sections below of some of my videos or if聽聽
[144]
you're in any crypto discord or telegram servers聽
scammers will create a bot that seems official or聽聽
[149]
try to impersonate a project specifically a team聽
member and then they will dm you so that they look聽聽
[154]
official and they do this in hopes of scamming聽
you in some way one of the most common scams聽聽
[160]
is the way that they ask for a hundred dollars and聽
then they'll turn it into two thousand dollars for聽聽
[164]
you and give it back they're basically claiming聽
to invest your money for you now this happens聽聽
[169]
all the time on my channel in fact i even messaged聽
one of these scammers to see how the scam worked聽聽
[174]
and i want to say it very clearly right聽
now never reach out to someone you met in聽聽
[178]
the comment sections on youtube especially if聽
they look like me i promise you it is not me聽聽
[185]
once you reach out to one of these fake accounts聽
a scammer will send you a dm moments later saying聽聽
[190]
that they're a project team member and that they聽
can assist you they often change their username聽聽
[194]
or their profile picture to impersonate a real聽
team member on discord or youtube for the case of聽聽
[199]
discord you can do something really simple you can聽
check the actual discord handle and check if it聽聽
[204]
matches the information of the impersonated team聽
member for example mine is practical psychology聽聽
[210]
9608 and no one can copy that discord handle for聽
youtube it could be something as simple as just聽聽
[216]
clicking on the account and seeing that they have聽
zero subscribers or no videos uploaded remember no聽聽
[222]
legit project team member will ever give you a聽
whatsapp telephone number and we will never ask聽聽
[228]
to invest your money for you scam number three聽
is burning a percentage of a token or sending it聽聽
[233]
to a dev wallet now another scam well at least聽
it's kind of a scam is that token developers聽聽
[238]
will implement something that is called a burn聽
feature they will say every time this token is聽聽
[243]
traded a portion of the trade is burned forever so聽
an example of this is that if you were to send 100聽聽
[249]
tokens to your friend five tokens would be burned聽
forever or at least sent to an account that nobody聽聽
[254]
has access to this makes you believe that one day聽
there won't be very many of these tokens out there聽聽
[260]
and if you buy now and then just hold the value of聽
your tokens should automatically increase well let聽聽
[265]
me tell you something if my dog ate something that聽
one day turned his poop orange that might be the聽聽
[271]
entire day in his whole life where his poop was聽
orange but just because it's scarce and it only聽聽
[276]
happened once doesn't mean it has value nobody's聽
gonna want my dog's orange colored poop for it to聽聽
[281]
have value other people have to want that orange聽
poop for it to have value keep this in mind with聽聽
[286]
tokens that have a deflationary feature especially聽
if that's all that they offer scam number four聽聽
[291]
is something that i saw actually a few days ago聽
here's the setup someone contacts you and says聽聽
[296]
something like this hey i live in china and they聽
just made crypto illegal so i want to get rid of聽聽
[301]
my wallet so i don't get in trouble here's my seed聽
phrase you can donate the money or do whatever you聽聽
[306]
want with it and maybe have some for yourself聽
then after that message they will actually send聽聽
[310]
you a real seed phrase to an actual account with聽
actual money in it the one that i personally saw聽聽
[317]
had three thousand dollars worth of tether but聽
here's the trick to get the tether out you must聽聽
[322]
first have some ethereum in the account to pay the聽
gas fee so if you're kind of smart you'll think hm聽聽
[326]
i'll just send it to my own account to do that聽
you have to deposit like 50 of ethereum so you聽聽
[332]
can actually transact the money out of the聽
account well it happens to be that the fee聽聽
[336]
to transact a token is like fifty dollars while聽
the fee that send ethereum is like ten dollars so聽聽
[342]
you deposit fifty dollars and then immediately the聽
scammer sends the money to their account profiting聽聽
[347]
forty dollars when i say immediately i mean really聽
fast like within ten seconds they have a computer聽聽
[352]
running a program that checks if there's funds聽
in that account and then automatically sends it聽聽
[356]
to their ethereum account so there is absolutely聽
no way for you to get the three thousand dollars聽聽
[361]
out of there now the sad part of this is the聽
blockchain is available for everyone to see so聽聽
[366]
you can literally look at the account on etherscan聽
and see that 30 people were scammed around 2聽聽
[371]
800 in total and if we get enough comments below聽
maybe i'll explain it in more detail but in short聽聽
[377]
if someone gives you their seed phrase and the聽
wallet has money in it do not deposit money for聽聽
[382]
any reason whatever money you deposit in there聽
consider gone i'm also going to say technically聽聽
[387]
if they were in china and they didn't want to be聽
connected to the account they wouldn't have to聽聽
[390]
give it to someone ethereum accounts don't work聽
like that it's just bad logic scam number five聽聽
[396]
is a smart contract bug so another trick that聽
scammers use which you may not even be aware of聽聽
[402]
is a bug where people can buy a token but then聽
they can't sell it now i know what you're thinking聽聽
[407]
how is this possible well there are actually three聽
ways of doing this first when the developers are聽聽
[412]
creating the token they simply disable the聽
approve function in the erc20 token contract聽聽
[418]
basically meaning decentralized exchanges cannot聽
get your approval for putting the token to be聽聽
[423]
sold the second way is to add a rebase function聽
into the token contract so at the moment you try聽聽
[428]
to sell the token you'll lose 99 of it third聽
they could easily write a few lines of code聽聽
[433]
that prevents the token from being sold to a dex聽
only bought or supplied this means a lot of money聽聽
[439]
coming into the project and none is going out聽
making it a perfect situation for scammers to run聽聽
[444]
away with all their money technically they could聽
make it so when you sold your token the money you聽聽
[448]
would have received goes to the developers also聽
now to sum this up i'm not saying you should聽聽
[452]
learn how to read smart contract code but i will聽
say before making any buy over a thousand dollars聽聽
[458]
you should find a friend who can number six is聽
fishing on fake websites the next technique is聽聽
[464]
something you really need to be careful of聽
and keep an eye out whenever you discover a聽聽
[468]
new project or you browse using a new device or a聽
computer some scammers will create a website that聽聽
[473]
is an exact copy of a specific crypto project聽
that you actually want to invest in and they'll聽聽
[478]
do it with the same user interface and the same聽
information on it the only things different from聽聽
[483]
this fake website to the real one are two things聽
number one the domain because scammers can't聽聽
[488]
use the same domain as a real website they will聽
actually create a new one that is almost the same聽聽
[493]
as the real one for example scammers could create聽
a fake whiteboard crypto website switching it from聽聽
[498]
the dot com to the dot org dot net dot phi dot x聽
y z or any other top level domain they could also聽聽
[504]
add an s to the end like whiteboardcryptos.com or聽
to move the e whitboardcrypto.com anyways the idea聽聽
[510]
here is that they change this little detail so聽
people don't realize they're on the wrong website聽聽
[515]
the second thing they change is the smart聽
contracts and this is the scammy part the聽聽
[520]
scammers could change the smart contracts code so聽
that if you were to interact with it they could聽聽
[524]
get access to your funds in your wallet leading聽
you to losing all your money in fact they can聽聽
[529]
make this contract do literally anything which聽
is why it's really important to only connect to聽聽
[534]
applications that you trust personally something i聽
do to make sure i always click on the right links聽聽
[539]
is to go to trusted websites like coin gecko or聽
coin market cap you can also check the official聽聽
[544]
project's twitter account to find the right links聽
and then bookmark those links so you always use聽聽
[548]
the correct one scam number seven is fake icos聽
so you know how kickstarter projects or really聽聽
[555]
any crowdfunding projects get the money they show聽
their product that's yet to be manufactured and聽聽
[560]
then people fund the project in exchange for a聽
great deal maybe they'll get two products for聽聽
[564]
the price of one or maybe a special edition聽
version in crypto we have something similar聽聽
[569]
and it's called an ico or initial coin offering聽
and it works as a way to gather a lot of money聽聽
[574]
from investors so that they can start the project聽
well fake icos are a really easy way for scammers聽聽
[580]
to present a project to investors with absolutely聽
no intention of actually creating it and then just聽聽
[585]
run away with their investors money how it usually聽
works is that scammers present a really nice聽聽
[590]
innovative revolutionary project to the investors聽
they then ask for money to kick off their project聽聽
[595]
and lure inexperienced investors in with聽
a juicy roi like a hundred percent or聽聽
[600]
a thousand percent and this leads to the聽
investors giving their money but then the聽聽
[604]
scammers just run away with it and because many聽
projects in the crypto space are not regulated聽聽
[609]
unfortunately the scammers pretty much get away聽
with it a good thing to do before investing in a聽聽
[614]
crypto project is to look for legit white papers聽
a project's timeline or good tokenomics to back聽聽
[620]
your investment don't just look at the great聽
user interface or the juicy roi we actually聽聽
[624]
have a video coming up on how to specifically聽
do research on a coin or a token so hit that聽聽
[628]
subscribe button and turn on notifications聽
for that absolute monster of a helpful video聽聽
[633]
scam number eight is called hidden whales you聽
know how i always say to be careful with projects聽聽
[639]
with low liquidity or a low market cap because聽
they can easily be manipulated by a whale well聽聽
[644]
a whale is anyone holding a high percentage of the聽
tokens out there and because of this they have the聽聽
[649]
ability to sell all their tokens at once causing聽
a crash anyways since this is kind of obvious and聽聽
[655]
since scammers are aware that people will actually聽
look at it before investing money into a project聽聽
[659]
scammy projects have now found other ways to聽
hide the fact that they hold most of the token聽聽
[664]
instead of having one wallet with all the money聽
they simply split it between multiple wallets聽聽
[669]
for example if the total liquidity of a project聽
was half a million dollars and maybe the team聽聽
[673]
was holding fifty thousand dollars which would be聽
ten percent of the entire project they would then聽聽
[678]
split the money into ten different wallets each聽
wallet holding five thousand dollars this way聽聽
[683]
they make it look like a safer and legit project聽
now i do wanna say here you can easily check the聽聽
[688]
early transactions of a project's initial tokens聽
but it is a lot more work required by you and聽聽
[693]
i've noticed that a lot of projects have started聽
doing this because people won't do any more work聽聽
[697]
other than just look at the token holders page on聽
etherscan they'll simply look at it and say that聽聽
[702]
there's no single whale wallets and then they'll聽
invest here's a tip you can check the blockchain聽聽
[708]
you can actually spend an hour just looking聽
around and seeing where the early money is going聽聽
[712]
it's very easy it's very simple it just takes聽
some time maybe i'll make a video on how to do聽聽
[716]
it later but i just want you guys to be aware that聽
this stuff actually happens again the simplest way聽聽
[722]
to make sure devs do not hold most of the token is聽
to simply look at the first transactions and where聽聽
[727]
the money originally got distributed if the first聽
transaction is sent to a lot of multiple addresses聽聽
[733]
this is not a good sign scam number 9 is聽
psychologically making you think that a聽聽
[738]
smaller price is easier to be able to hit a higher聽
price now this one is technically not a scam but聽聽
[743]
it's kind of tricky when a project launches the聽
tokenomics are established by the project's team聽聽
[748]
developers get to answer the questions what is聽
the max supply of the token what's the initial聽聽
[753]
price of the token and yes they can set that聽
and who gets the early tokens all of this stuff聽聽
[758]
is decided in advance now something quite a few聽
scammy projects do is simply print a very large聽聽
[764]
amount of tokens that way the price stays low聽
even if there's a lot of money behind the entire聽聽
[768]
project between you and me owning 100 tokens at聽
one dollar each is the same as owning a hundred聽聽
[774]
thousand tokens worth a tenth of a penny right聽
well in people's mind having more tokens with a聽聽
[780]
low price is way more tempting psychologically聽
because it makes them think with a price this聽聽
[784]
low it'll easily double or triple or 10x or maybe聽
even 100x in value along with this they also get聽聽
[790]
to feel like they're owning a ton of tokens for聽
these investors it's cool for them to say that聽聽
[795]
they own a billion tokens but in reality going聽
from a tenth of a penny to a dollar is just as聽聽
[800]
difficult as another token going from one dollar聽
to a thousand dollars so this trick is really聽聽
[805]
about making people think their gain opportunity聽
is higher than it is which makes people invest聽聽
[810]
more in the token so make sure you don't invest聽
in a project only because the price of the token聽聽
[815]
is low because if you do it might be a game of聽
limbo and you're gonna see how low it can go聽聽
[820]
lastly number 10 gambling with your trust the last聽
scam is something we saw with the latest hottest聽聽
[826]
scam the squid games token these developers聽
capitalized on the fact that a show called squid聽聽
[831]
games became very popular and they rode the hype聽
train using the same name so that that way they聽聽
[837]
could get a lot of attention but this is not the聽
trick i'm wanting to talk about to create a false聽聽
[841]
sense of safety they actually created a fake team聽
yeah you heard me right they created around 10聽聽
[847]
fake profiles with fake bios to make it seem like聽
the project had a great and solid team behind it聽聽
[853]
they went so far as to add computer generated聽
pictures of people in fact people that did聽聽
[857]
not even exist just to make the project seem more聽
legit the only thing i want to say about this one聽聽
[862]
is that crypto scams are getting more and more聽
persuasive so you'll have to work a lot harder聽聽
[867]
when making a decision on a project wrapping this聽
video up if you're wanting to invest in a project聽聽
[872]
there are really only two things that i suggest聽
you to do the first is to go to a website called聽聽
[876]
rugdock.io and what this website does is analyze聽
projects and if there's any obvious possibilities聽聽
[882]
of exploits or scams in the contract code they'll聽
let you know how high of a risk it is to invest聽聽
[888]
in it i'll put the link to this website in the聽
description it's very helpful the other thing聽聽
[891]
i can suggest is that you join our discord and聽
our team will actually look at the project for聽聽
[896]
you and point out any obvious risks obviously we聽
can't tell you if it's a good bet or not but we聽聽
[900]
can tell you if it hits anything on this list or聽
if we find any new bugs you'll have to sign up to聽聽
[905]
our newsletter to get access to that discord and聽
you can find that easily at whiteboardcrypto.com聽聽
[910]
one more thing i do is research the project聽
a ton before investing i suggest reading the聽聽
[915]
white papers and the tokenomics you know the聽
basics but there's a few more advanced things聽聽
[919]
i do i actually created this really cool ultimate聽
research pdf which is a step-by-step guide that聽聽
[924]
shows you exactly how to look into a token and聽
technically it's only available to whiteboard聽聽
[929]
crypto club members but i'll be sharing some ideas聽
from it in a future video so definitely make sure聽聽
[934]
you're subscribed anyways thank you guys so much聽
for watching we hope you enjoyed this video we聽聽
[938]
really hope that you learned something and most聽
of all we hope to see you in our next video
[956]
you
