Namaskar, my name is Mukul
[13]
And you are welcome to the Asset Yogi
[15]
Where we unlock the knowledge of finance
[19]
When you analyze the financial statement of a business
[23]
especially when you are researching about stock for investing
[26]
Then sometimes in the balance sheet, in other assets portion, you get to
[30]
see discounts and other expenses. What discounts and other expenses
[34]
are doing on in the balance sheet? Actually, these are not assets
[37]
They are fictitious assets. In many financial ratios,
[42]
we have to use this fictitious asset. So I thought
[44]
in this quick video, I will explain the concept of a fictitious asset to you
[48]
So keep watching the video till the end.
[51]
Let's go straight towards the blackboard.
[53]
First, we will understand the definition of an asset.
[55]
I had already discussed it with you in the previous video.
[58]
It is a resource that can be owned by any individual or company
[62]
which provides you with the cash flow in the future over the long term
[66]
or it gives any economic benefit.
[69]
So the first condition is
[70]
it is a resource that is providing benefits in the long term.
[73]
And the second condition is its ownership.
[76]
Any individual or company can own it.
[79]
And its third condition is that there is an economic value in this
[84]
That means it can be exchanged
[86]
And it can be sold also. So if I talk about the example
[90]
Let's say there is a factory and there is land and buildings,
[92]
plant and equipment in it.
[94]
All these help you to gain long-term benefits.
[98]
You get profit from whatever you sell.
[101]
So now we will talk about fictitious asset
[103]
whether it fits in the
[104]
definition of an asset or not
[107]
So what are fictitious assets?
[110]
These are expenses or losses
[112]
Expenses mean the expenditure
[114]
The company has done such types of expenses.
[116]
Or incurred such losses in any accounting
[119]
period or within any year
[122]
which hasn't been written off in that year
[126]
This means assuming the expenditure was 1 crore
[130]
So the company is saying that the expenditure of 1 crore or loss
[133]
We don't want it to show this in one year, we want to show it for 10 years
[138]
And until then we will consider it as an asset.
[141]
Because if there is some expense through which I am getting a long term benefit
[146]
Then why will I show it at once, I will show it in 10 years
[150]
But if we talk about its definition
[152]
Then it doesn't fit into the definition. We will assume
[155]
that we have done its amortization for over a period of time
[159]
We will also assume that its economic value will come over a period of time.
[164]
Let's say if any company has done advertising expense then
[167]
its value may come in 10 years
[169]
But are the rest of the conditions fulfilled?
[172]
Is this a resource? No, it's not a resource.
[175]
Can it be owned? No, it cannot be owned.
[179]
Is it an economic value that can be exchanged or sold?
[183]
No, it does not meet this condition also
[186]
So this doesn't meet any condition of an asset
[188]
That's why it is called a fictitious asset. We are only giving it accounting treatment
[195]
to it just like an asset but this is not an asset.
[197]
So it doesn't qualify the definition of an asset.
[201]
Now we will see how its treatment is done.
[205]
Now I will explain it to you with the help of an example.
[207]
Assume any company has introduced a special offer,
[211]
done marketing.
[212]
Marketing and advertising are classic examples of this.
[215]
Assume the company said in marketing and advertising
[218]
that we want to give some promotional offers. We may get its
[221]
benefit in the long term. So the company has spent
[224]
1 crore Rs at once during a year
[228]
And the company says that we will get its value in 10 years
[232]
So we will amortize the expense of it in 10 years
[237]
So what company does is
[239]
It divides 1 crore in 10 lakhs per year for 10 years
[245]
So the expenditure for every year,
[247]
the amortized amount
[249]
It shows 10 lakhs Rs.
[250]
How much will be the fictitious asset?
[252]
If the amortized amount of 10 lakhs is shown in the first year
[257]
So 90 lakhs as a fictitious asset will be shown in the balance sheet
[261]
So this will be shown in the balance sheet.
[264]
And you will see the
[265]
amortized amount in the income statement
[270]
Ideally, the company should have
[274]
shown the amount of 1 crore in the first year
[277]
This is the ideal amount.
[279]
But we are not talking ideally.
[281]
The company shows this amount in 10 years
[283]
And it shows it like this because if they show the expense of 1 crore at once
[287]
then maybe the company would have to show the losses. And the company
[291]
doesn't want that. So the company divides it into 10 years. So we talk about more
[296]
examples of fictitious assets then I have already discussed marketing
[300]
and advertising expenses with you. Maybe you faced some losses
[303]
You faced the loss of 1 crore
[305]
Due to any reason, for example, we are talking about the bank's NPA
[310]
Maybe the banks will write off their NPA gradually
[313]
They may have to write off the losses also.
[318]
Discount on issue of shares
[320]
Sometimes the company issues shares at a discount
[325]
So the discount portion
[328]
is amortized slowly.
[330]
Similarly,
[331]
if the loss is incurred in the debentures
[334]
Then it also comes under the fictitious asset
[337]
And it is expensed gradually.
[339]
So I think the concept of fictitious assets is clear to you.
[343]
So that's all in this video.
