[8]
to search for accommodation you need to
[10]
go to
[13]
www.com.ed.ac.uk
[14]
this is a separate website to any
[16]
applications made through the university
[18]
so make sure you do this carefully
[21]
they have things like tours and
[24]
you can kind of compare the
[26]
accommodation it gives you the prices it
[27]
gives you to say whether they have a
[29]
common room if they have an ensuite if
[30]
they're catered or not and things like
[32]
that
[32]
[Music]
[38]
on the accommodation website each
[40]
accommodation is shown on a map
[41]
which even gives you a breakdown in
[42]
minutes how long the walk is to the
[44]
nearest supermarket
[45]
and the main campuses of the university
[47]
it is important to remember though that
[48]
edinburgh is quite a small city and more
[50]
places are walkable than you might
[56]
imagine
[57]
[Music]
[59]
it's worth noting that accommodation
[61]
doesn't go on a first-come first-served
[62]
basis
[63]
and so there's no need for you to rush
[65]
your decisions
[67]
you it's only they've only just started
[69]
allocating accommodation around now
[71]
but you'll get the same chance to get
[73]
one of your five preferences
[75]
if you applied by the deadline it's not
[76]
first come first theft
[78]
[Music]
[83]
so i stayed in chancellors in politicals
[86]
which is the cathode accommodation
[87]
option
[88]
at edinburgh um the
[91]
positives are that i'm a horrible chef
[95]
so moving to university i didn't want
[98]
cooking to be an extra thing that i had
[100]
to worry about in my first year
[101]
when i was already a bit nervous about
[103]
all the changes that were going to
[104]
happen
[105]
and having to move away from home i just
[106]
didn't really want to think about
[107]
cooking
[108]
also i saw catering as
[112]
a really sociable option and getting to
[114]
eat meals with friends and talk about
[117]
things over dinner time and breakfast
[119]
time just
[120]
felt like quite a nice way to meet
[121]
people and make friends to me
[123]
and so that's why i chose catered
[130]
so i picked self-catered because i like
[132]
to have that
[133]
option to go to eat when i want to have
[136]
breakfast where i want and
[138]
you're able to spend your money perhaps
[139]
more wisely so i'm able to
[141]
shop cheap some weeks to shop more
[143]
expensive without more money
[145]
i also just like the ability to have a
[146]
kitchen cook in it it's not for everyone
[148]
sometimes if you like structure if you
[150]
like to know you'll definitely have
[152]
meals at a certain time go catered but
[154]
for me there was no loss in going
[156]
self-care
[157]
we weren't less social if not growing
[158]
more so i really enjoy cater and i would
[160]
recommend it but it's all about what
[162]
suits you
[164]
[Music]
[168]
so i think this is one of the most
[170]
common questions um regarding
[172]
catered accommodation and i also think
[174]
it's probably the thing that maybe puts
[176]
people off a bit
[177]
i personally didn't find the um time
[179]
allocation
[180]
that constraining and i thought
[183]
they were quite generous because that
[185]
was kind of the normal time that you
[187]
would be eating anyway
[188]
for breakfast brunch and dinner i think
[190]
it's about a three hour slot and when
[192]
you think about it that
[193]
that's quite a long time for how long
[195]
you really need to eat
[197]
also the time that it ends that's the
[199]
last time you can go into the canteen as
[202]
opposed to like
[203]
that's the last time you have to stop
[204]
eating so there's actually an extra bit
[206]
of leeway either side as well
[207]
um also if you missed occasional meals
[210]
if you had a society
[212]
or you were at the gym or something it
[214]
wasn't really a big deal either because
[216]
you could order in you could treat
[217]
yourself get some food
[219]
or you could make something in your
[220]
pantry there's microwaves in there as
[222]
well
[222]
so if you wanted to grab a quick
[224]
sandwich or actually make something you
[225]
could do that as well
[227]
but obviously that was only occasionally
[229]
and to be honest in case of
[230]
accommodation
[232]
i don't think that many people found it
[233]
that constraining
[240]
i was really worried when i came to uni
[242]
about sharing a bathroom but i needn't
[244]
have been
[245]
in my flight of six we had two bathrooms
[247]
between us and you sort of learned to
[248]
adapt to other people's bathroom times
[250]
like i think i only queued for a shower
[252]
once in the whole time i was in halls
[256]
obviously you don't need an ensuite it's
[257]
up to you and it's up to what you're
[259]
willing to pay for
[260]
and i wasn't that bored about it last
[262]
week i couldn't afford an ensuite
[263]
my life was no worse for not having one
[266]
some people love an ensuite but you have
[268]
to pay more money for it so it's really
[269]
up to you
[270]
and what you value i like having the
[272]
money spent on other things
[274]
[Music]
[280]
for me i got one of my five choices and
[282]
i don't know any of my friends or anyone
[284]
else that didn't get one of their five
[285]
choices
[288]
so your five preferences aren't ordered
[290]
like number one isn't your first choice
[291]
number five isn't your last choice
[292]
hopefully you'll get one of your five
[294]
um but actually i got the one i put
[297]
first which was the one i wanted most
[299]
and most of my friends got that or their
[300]
second choice
[302]
so it seems quite common that people do
[303]
tend to get the one that they want
[305]
but there's no guarantee of that
[312]
so i can only really speak on behalf of
[315]
politicals which is the case
[316]
accommodation so i think there's eight
[319]
buildings within
[320]
the um small village of politicals so
[324]
there's the shared canteen and then
[325]
eight different buildings around me
[327]
which have
[328]
hundreds of people in each one so
[330]
obviously they've all got their
[331]
reputation
[332]
and they change year on year so it's
[334]
hard to say which one is lively which
[336]
one's not from my
[338]
personal experience i was in
[340]
chancellor's court and i thought that
[342]
was a very sociable
[343]
house to be in i also have that holland
[346]
house is extremely sociable but i think
[347]
they all are to be honest and
[349]
yes some might be slightly rowdier than
[352]
other ones but again it varies so much
[354]
year on year and i'm sure you can check
[356]
like online forums and
[359]
and tip pages i think there's some
[360]
things on the website as well
[362]
which you can check like um the
[365]
reputation that they have
[367]
but yeah i mean you're gonna have a good
[368]
time no matter where you go but if you
[370]
want to request somewhere quieter
[372]
that information can be found on the
[373]
website
[376]
there are some accommodations that are a
[378]
bit more out the way and a bit away from
[379]
the hustle and bustle of the city
[381]
so yes i was acquired and i stayed in
[383]
robson's close which is on the cow gate
[385]
at street field club
[386]
so our night times were not quiet but
[389]
that was fine
[390]
we were high enough high up enough that
[391]
it didn't really bother us and it was
[393]
quite exciting
[394]
you were two minutes away from
[395]
everything that was going on in terms of
[397]
the people there
[398]
you don't know until you get there it
[400]
might be that your accommodation a lot
[402]
of people like to party in it it may be
[403]
that it doesn't
[404]
but um usually when you fill your form
[407]
you can request
[409]
people that you live with to be the same
[411]
sort of interests and the same
[413]
intentions that you do so if you put
[415]
that you like going out a lot you might
[416]
be matched with other people who also
[418]
like going out a lot
[419]
so and there's no sort of balance here
[427]
coming from london i initially found
[429]
edinburgh quite a cheap city to live in
[431]
because i was used to paying six pounds
[432]
for a pint
[433]
however now that i've lived here a while
[435]
i think it's more of a
[436]
middle-of-the-road city in terms of
[438]
living expenses
[439]
outside of my rent the biggest portions
[441]
of my monthly budget are allocated to
[442]
society events and socials
[444]
but i also like to put aside a little
[446]
bit of money every month to save for
[447]
something nice for my flat or for myself
[452]
well it's not too bad i was in
[454]
self-catered accommodation in first year
[455]
and that ranges from about four thousand
[457]
to six thousand pounds for a 38-week
[459]
lease
[460]
and within that is included all of your
[462]
bills your wi-fi your personal content
[464]
insurance
[465]
the resident life team and cleaners that
[467]
are in most of the common spaces in
[469]
their accommodations
[470]
so that felt quite affordable i was on
[472]
the kind of four thousand pound mark of
[474]
that
[475]
i then spent about sixty pounds a week
[477]
mostly on food but also on things like
[480]
social activities or
[481]
you know going out or snacks and coffees
[484]
and things
[485]
i kind of budgeted by using an app
[488]
called weekly budgets
[490]
and dividing my loan by the number of
[492]
weeks i was at uni that worked really
[493]
well for me
[494]
and then in second year my flat was
[495]
about 550 pounds a month
[498]
um which did feel more and i had bills
[500]
on top of that but it definitely feels
[502]
fairly affordable and you can also work
[504]
really easily in the city as well
[511]
and on every floor we had an ra live
[513]
with us which is a resident assistant
[516]
so it's typically another student who's
[517]
maybe in their fourth year or beyond
[519]
and they live alongside you and it's
[522]
just someone who is kind of your first
[524]
point of call if you've got a problem
[526]
you know um social problems medical
[529]
problems
[529]
they were the person to go to they're
[531]
the person to ask advice from
[533]
and and they're really helpful living
[535]
with us
[537]
they have their own space as well so
[538]
they're not like involved in your living
[541]
situation
[541]
but they're the person to ask if you've
[544]
got questions or worries or
[546]
anything about like um logistical things
[548]
on your floor as well
[550]
we also had wardens living in our
[551]
building so these are someone slightly
[553]
older who
[554]
if you had a more serious problem you
[555]
could go to them with
[557]
but yeah it was really nice to have that
[559]
person there some extra support
[567]
the university has an official new
[569]
students website
[570]
webpage on facebook which you can join i
[573]
found that my accommodation has
[575]
its own different web page on facebook
[577]
where i joined and got in touch with
[578]
some of my flatmates but there's no need
[580]
to worry if you don't find them
[581]
because you'll definitely get to know
[583]
them once you get there
[585]
so before i came to university i met
[587]
people on my flight in a facebook group
[589]
and we just put what flatware and then
[591]
people commented saying oh i'm in that
[592]
one too so i was lucky enough to meet i
[594]
think all my flatmates were moved in
[596]
and after i moved in the best would do
[598]
is just talking people we went
[600]
and knocked in doors and everyone in our
[602]
sort of block of flats and just invited
[604]
them around
[605]
and so it was nice to get to know people
[607]
after that societies you have your
[609]
societies fair
[610]
uh usually wednesday and thursday
[611]
welcome week go there meet some people
[614]
see what interests are
[615]
and then go to events and meet people
[616]
and that's one of the best things that i
[618]
did to expand my social structure
[626]
there are a range of different options
[627]
for how you can pay for your
[628]
accommodation edinburgh once you've
[630]
accepted your offer
[631]
including paying info upfront or paying
[633]
in semesterly or monthly installments
[635]
which is what i chose to do
[636]
because it made the outgoing cost more
[639]
[Music]
[644]
manageable
[647]
[Music]
[655]
[Music]
