The question we would like to pose to ask
[9]
is...
[19]
Do we want survival,
[22]
or do we want happiness?
[42]
And the second question is,
[45]
happiness and survival,
[48]
can these two things go together?
[59]
Because...
[61]
while struggling to survive,
[64]
we have to destroy, to kill.
[73]
And the motivation, deep motivation
[78]
inside,
[86]
is...
[91]
not only to survive but to have pleasure.
[102]
And looking deeply into the present situation,
[106]
we can see that very clearly.
[116]
People are killing each other.
[122]
And many believe that the others...
[129]
are the obstacles on their way to survival
[135]
and to sensual pleasures.
[148]
On one hand we try to fight in order to survive,
[153]
and on the other hand we try our best in order to...
[158]
get the pleasure, the sensual pleasures.
[164]
And both kinds of action are bringing a lot of suffering
[169]
to us,
[171]
and to our victims.
[185]
And we can see that...
[188]
the one who has to perish in the cycle,
[195]
of course they suffer.
[197]
But the one who wins
[206]
also suffers.
[211]
And that habit, that seed...
[215]
is so deep in us --
[220]
The drive to survive,
[222]
the drive to get as much sensual pleasure as possible.
[239]
When we look into the teaching of the Buddha,
[244]
you can see a way out.
[249]
The Buddha does not speak about survival...
[256]
does not...
[261]
encourage us the path of seeking sensual pleasure.
[269]
And his message is centered...
[273]
on how to cope with our suffering,
[277]
how to transform our suffering.
[291]
When we...
[297]
when we get angry, we suffer.
[303]
And we make the people around us suffer.
[308]
And the Buddha would like us to learn how to recognize
[312]
the suffering caused by anger,
[315]
and by the kind of action that is the result of anger.
[324]
And the Buddha encourages us to look deeply into anger
[330]
as the cause of suffering,
[332]
and find ways to transform that anger into something else
[337]
like compassion, loving-kindness.
[342]
Because, while anger makes us and people around suffer,
[348]
understanding and compassion bring relief.
[383]
And he also advices us to look, to recognize our fear.
[398]
Because fear also brings a lot of suffering.
[403]
And out of fear
[408]
we can act in a very destructive way.
[416]
We try to kill them
[420]
before they have a chance to kill us.
[424]
And we cannot sleep well, always afraid:
[431]
"The terrorists are everywhere,
[435]
and we can die at any moment."
[440]
So we are pushed by our fear to do something,
[445]
to kill the terrorist before they can kill us.
[454]
In the process of trying to kill them and to get safety,
[458]
we kill so many innocent people.
[464]
The Buddha advised us to look deeply into the nature of our fear,
[469]
and to see whether there is a way to transform our fear
[475]
into understanding and compassion
[483]
because understanding and compassion will help us
[487]
and help people around us.
[499]
He advised us to look at our delusion.
[511]
We are confused.
[514]
Our confusion.
[516]
We are confused: we don't know where to go, what to do.
[523]
We don't have a path.
[526]
We are lost.
[533]
And confusion,
[545]
confusion lets us to be angry, to be fearful,
[552]
to be desperate.
[556]
Caught in a state of being angry,
[564]
desperate,
[569]
desperate and fearful, we can destroy ourselves.
[577]
We can destroy our health,
[579]
and we can cause a lot of suffering
[581]
to many other people, confusion.
[589]
And then the Buddha also advised us to look at our craving,
[596]
the nature of craving.
[612]
Because craving also pushes us in the direction of...
[618]
wrong action.
[630]
And when craving is there, we don't have peace;
[637]
we don't have happiness.
[640]
And these things are...
[642]
described in Buddhist teaching as poisons.
[647]
Poisons.
[653]
And when we get the poison in us,
[658]
we suffer, and we make other people suffer.
[663]
Already having poisons in us,
[666]
we continue to get more poison from the outside
[669]
from in our environment.
[671]
We get more fear, more anger,
[674]
more confusion, more craving.
[679]
And that makes the situation
[682]
more and more difficult.
[698]
Looking deeply we can see that
[706]
in terms of survival,
[713]
only just in terms of survival,
[718]
the practice to help us...
[722]
transform our anger, our fear, our confusion,
[725]
and our craving,
[732]
help us to suffer less.
[735]
helps us to bring...
[739]
help us to heal,
[740]
helps us to have a better health,
[745]
for ourselves.
[747]
And also helps us to change the environment.
[761]
And with that,
[763]
the chance to survive is better.
[778]
Now looking in the situation of the world,
[780]
we see that how much confusion, fear and anger destroy us,
[785]
and destroy the people around us.
[796]
And that goes in the line of evolution.
[808]
[You may] think evolution is for survival,
[813]
but it is not.
[815]
It is creating a lot of suffering.
[817]
And survival cannot be something very sure,
[824]
because if we continue like that, no one will survive in the future.
[830]
And that is why we have to bring in...
[834]
the dimension of "spiritual evolution,"
[838]
"cultural evolution,"
[843]
and understand the word "survival" in another way,
[848]
with another meaning.
[864]
There are those of us who have...
[869]
a serious illness,
[877]
and the doctors say that we can not live very long.
[882]
We'll die in a year or two, or in six months,
[888]
and because of that we have a lot of fear.
[890]
We have a lot of despair,
[893]
and anger also.
[897]
And that fear, that anger, that despair,
[900]
will make the situation worse.
[908]
But when we bring in...
[912]
the teaching and the practice of the Buddha,
[916]
we can change the situation.
[924]
Because the teaching and the practice can help us
[926]
deal with the anger, the fear, and the despair.
[938]
And we learn how to live
[941]
peacefully and happily,
[943]
Even if we accept that our lives will...
[946]
the time left for us to live is shorter than...
[953]
than for other people.
[957]
When you have learned to live peacefully, deeply,
[961]
enjoying every moment of your daily life,
[966]
you learn how to smile, how to relax,
[970]
how to nourish yourself with...
[974]
refreshing and healing elements of life.
[980]
Then these poisons do not harm you anymore.
[985]
And many of us, thanks to the practice,
[988]
have been able to live much, much longer
[992]
than predicted.
[1002]
There was a young man in Canada, and his doctor told him that...
[1006]
he had only three months to live.
[1014]
He was sitting next to me in a tea meditation.
[1022]
And he told us about his situation.
[1027]
And I said, "It's ok,
[1030]
it may be true that you will die in three months
[1035]
but are you capable of drinking
[1037]
this cup of tea with me in peace?"
[1040]
I challenged him.
[1043]
"Because this moment is a very wonderful moment.
[1049]
You are surrounded by friends.
[1052]
Today is a beautiful day and we have tea.
[1055]
Are you are capable of enjoying your tea
[1057]
in the presence of the people sitting around you?"
[1061]
I challenged him.
[1064]
"What is the use of having 100 years to live
[1067]
if you are not capable of drinking your tea with peace?"
[1072]
he was challenged.
[1076]
And tried to drink his tea.
[1081]
And after that he...
[1085]
he received the teachings on how to enjoy walking, sitting,
[1089]
drinking tea,
[1091]
breathing.
[1108]
He took the Fourteen Precepts,
[1111]
and got the Dharma name...
[1118]
"True Birth."
[1124]
True Birth (or True Life).
[1134]
And he was able to live...
[1139]
11 years after that.
[1147]
So that is also survival.
[1150]
But survival not by killing,
[1152]
by destroying the people or species around,
[1156]
but by bringing in the practice of transformation and healing.
