What You鈥檙e NOT Being Told About RV Roadside Assistance! - YouTube
Channel: Grateful Glamper
[0]
there are a record number of rvs on the
[2]
road right now but there are not a
[3]
record number of rv roadside providers
[7]
what does this mean for you
[9]
stay tuned and we're going to break it
[10]
down we are charity ben dakota and
[12]
trinity we decided we didn't want to
[14]
wait for a life of adventure so in 2017
[18]
we bought our first rv and set off to
[20]
live a life of travel in the usa
[24]
we've visited over 38 states in three
[26]
years and have many more to go follow
[28]
along to learn all the best places to
[30]
see rv and travel tips and much more
[34]
[Music]
[37]
so thank you so much for coming back to
[39]
the channel we recently read an article
[41]
from
[42]
rvtravel.com about the whole state of
[45]
the union so to speak when it comes to
[48]
roadside assistance and rving and we
[51]
wanted to make video because we have
[53]
personally experienced what is going on
[56]
this past summer when it comes to
[58]
roadside assistance and rving and now
[61]
we'll tell you about that a little bit
[62]
later in the video but suffice it to say
[65]
when we kind of read some of this it
[67]
totally resonated with us and we wanted
[69]
to share this information with you guys
[71]
out there because it could potentially
[73]
impact each and every one of you so we
[75]
have a class a diesel pusher motorhome
[78]
it's about 40 feet long and in the three
[81]
years that we have owned our rig we have
[84]
been towed twice the first time happened
[86]
down in arizona where we had a fan hub
[90]
come apart and our rig overheated
[92]
and this was just outside of the benson
[95]
area of arizona and we had to get towed
[99]
approximately eight miles and then
[101]
another time just this past summer in
[104]
the sturgis area of south dakota now put
[106]
a link for this whole video because we
[108]
did document everything that happened up
[110]
above if you're interested in kind of
[112]
taking a look at more at what happened
[114]
and how that whole experience turned out
[116]
but after that experience we really
[118]
started looking into the whole roadside
[121]
assistance thing for our rv because
[124]
there was a gap in what our insurance
[126]
covered versus what the actual tow bill
[128]
was because our insurance cap did a
[130]
certain dollar amount and we wanted to
[132]
make sure we were protected and didn't
[134]
have that issue again especially if an
[137]
eight mile tow bill cost us enough where
[139]
we had an out of pocket amount we
[141]
couldn't even imagine what if it had
[142]
been more than that so we secured a
[145]
different roadside assistance plan
[147]
through good sam after that to be able
[149]
to just kind of have the peace of mind
[151]
knowing that we would be covered for any
[153]
roadside assistance so this past summer
[156]
we had a breakdown in the sturgis south
[159]
dakota area and now this whole breakdown
[161]
we also documented this
[164]
was about a five-day ordeal
[167]
so it was two different videos that we
[169]
documented this in and i'll put a link
[171]
up above for those two videos and also
[174]
put a link at the end for those two
[176]
videos as well because the way that
[177]
everything unfolded was fairly
[180]
interesting and we learned a lot and
[183]
probably you can learn quite a bit from
[185]
this whole scenario that happened too so
[187]
want to probably go back and watch those
[189]
at some point so there are really two
[192]
things that you need to know right now
[194]
if you are an rv or even a van lifer
[196]
when it comes to roadside assistance and
[199]
then we're gonna share some tips a
[201]
little bit later in this video about how
[203]
to choose a roadside plan that works so
[206]
make sure that you watch to the end for
[208]
those now this is a direct quote from
[211]
rvtravel.com
[212]
the large number of inexperienced new
[215]
rvers also brings trouble to road help
[218]
services it's very frustrating to
[220]
everyone when so many new rvers are
[223]
having problems on their very first trip
[226]
we're seeing many more calls for
[227]
technical assistance since many rvers
[230]
just don't understand how their rig
[232]
works that problem is compounded by
[234]
customers renting rvs from peer-to-peer
[236]
rental companies they have zero
[238]
experience with the rv and they're
[240]
calling our help centers adding to the
[242]
very high call volumes and here's
[244]
another quote towing charges are going
[247]
up with the demand for their services
[249]
and rvers experiencing breakdowns on
[252]
their trip can likely expect more delays
[254]
and more difficulty finding qualified
[257]
service personnel to get their rigs back
[259]
on the road boy can we attest to this
[262]
when we broke down i called good sam the
[265]
day before that we needed to be towed
[268]
now luckily we found a good samaritan
[270]
that pulled us into a camp ground itself
[274]
and
[275]
again there's just so many interesting
[277]
and miraculous points to the story you
[279]
really should just watch the whole saga
[281]
unfold and we'll link at the end but
[284]
we didn't need to be towed out till the
[286]
next day so i gave good sam a full 24
[289]
hours notice
[290]
well the next day came in the time
[293]
window that they told us that the tow
[294]
truck would be there that time window
[296]
came and went
[298]
and
[299]
so well
[301]
probably just want to show you what
[302]
happened right here so when you say you
[304]
wouldn't be able to get to us this
[305]
afternoon would you be able to get to us
[307]
like yet today like early evening or an
[310]
appointment
[312]
tomorrow morning okay
[318]
in the meantime we got busy
[320]
yeah no i understand it's the height of
[323]
our v season
[325]
well and like i i shouldn't say this but
[329]
this such company they use the gerald is
[331]
horrible
[333]
they will spend hours calling around to
[334]
see if they can save ten dollars right
[337]
okay
[338]
all right well are you in a campground
[340]
yeah so here's here's the situation i am
[342]
in a campground
[344]
but what we've got is that
[347]
so we're we have a diesel pusher it's a
[349]
no start problem pretty darn sure it's a
[352]
fuel delivery issue because i had it at
[354]
the boss truck stop and rapid yesterday
[357]
they put a fuel pressure regulator on it
[359]
and a factory fuel filter
[361]
sent us down the road we were singing
[363]
down the road just fine but as soon as
[365]
we came to a stop we died
[367]
couldn't restart it
[368]
uh we were right off of i-90 and there
[371]
was a campground literally right across
[372]
the street so kind of a good samaritan
[374]
stop by that had like a f-550 truck and
[377]
a tow strap and i was like i can at
[378]
least haul you into the campground
[381]
but i have an appointment with butler
[383]
cat in rapid city for six in the morning
[385]
tomorrow
[387]
so i was hoping we could get there and
[389]
you know be in the parking lot then by 6
[391]
a.m tomorrow so that way we could have
[393]
him start looking at it because i mean
[395]
you know we're from florida and this
[397]
isn't our home base
[399]
and anybody else is like two weeks out
[401]
to be able to get us serviced and so
[404]
it's like i want and of course it's a
[405]
cat engine it really just needs to be
[407]
looked at by somebody that knows cat
[408]
it's still early morning for me i know
[411]
that okay okay is it it's that time of
[414]
the year there's just been enough tow
[415]
companies in the area for the volume of
[417]
people
[418]
this year yeah
[422]
so after we posted
[424]
this video the comments started flying
[427]
in
[427]
and other people told us where they had
[429]
very similar issues where they called
[431]
for roadside assistance and
[433]
they never showed up and they left them
[435]
high and dry
[437]
and so we have a few tips now after
[440]
having experienced this of what you can
[442]
do to make sure that you get roadside
[444]
service when you actually need it so tip
[447]
number one
[448]
you know the saying the squeaky wheel
[450]
gets the grease well be prepared to be
[452]
the squeaky wheel
[454]
we were told that what happens with good
[456]
sam is that they call several different
[458]
service providers and they get quotes
[460]
and they're looking for the cheapest one
[462]
well what happened in our particular
[464]
case was that good sam had called this
[466]
particular service provider to get a
[468]
quote
[469]
and they didn't just give them the okay
[471]
to just dispatch them right then and
[473]
there to come tow us
[475]
they started making other phone calls
[477]
well by the time that then they got
[478]
around to calling the service provider
[481]
back and said yeah go ahead because they
[483]
couldn't find anybody else cheaper that
[485]
service provider had already taken a
[487]
bunch of other calls and then now he
[489]
couldn't get to us
[491]
so if you have called for roadside
[493]
assistance
[494]
and they've given you a specific time
[496]
window or whatever it is that they have
[498]
given you
[499]
make sure that you kind of stay on them
[503]
to find out how they actually secured a
[506]
service provider or are they still
[508]
playing this game of calling around and
[511]
trying to find the guy that's going to
[513]
be 10 bucks than the last guy that they
[514]
talked to tip number two speak with that
[518]
service provider directly
[520]
and make sure
[522]
that you have talked to them to confirm
[524]
the time window of when they're actually
[526]
going to show up in our particular case
[528]
good sam told us that this was going to
[529]
be the service provider and then when i
[531]
got on the phone with him i got a very
[533]
different story
[534]
so confirm with that service provider
[537]
that you've been told is going to come
[538]
out that the story that you're getting
[541]
from your roadside company matches the
[543]
story that you're getting from the
[544]
service provider regarding the time that
[547]
they're actually going to show up before
[549]
we get to tips three and four we wanted
[551]
to take a minute to thank the sponsor of
[553]
today's video to go power now we've
[556]
pretty much learned the hard way over
[558]
the last four years
[559]
what it looks like to
[561]
not have a power source when we need it
[564]
and it probably really came to that
[566]
point of just we can't do this anymore
[570]
this last summer when we were in
[571]
northern wisconsin trying to upload a
[574]
video in an area that we had driven to
[578]
and the laptop is dying and it just
[580]
turned into a minor disaster
[583]
not having a constant source of power we
[586]
had our i've had it moment and decided
[588]
we needed to have something that we
[590]
could bring with us to have a portable
[592]
power source that was a hundred percent
[594]
reliable so we were super excited to be
[597]
able to partner with to go power
[599]
with the new advanced 360 power station
[603]
working remotely means that we can work
[605]
in the forest or at the beach and having
[608]
a way to power our laptops phones charge
[611]
camera batteries drone batteries all of
[614]
the things that keep us moving in
[616]
creating videos is very helpful plus the
[620]
whole reason we live this lifestyle is
[622]
to be portable and the to go power
[624]
station makes portability completely
[627]
possible
[628]
for us the to-go power station can be
[630]
charged through a household outlet
[632]
through a power outlet in our jeep or
[635]
our personal favorite with the to go
[637]
solar panel because hey we all like free
[641]
energy
[642]
and who in the rv world doesn't love
[645]
their solar we've been using the to go
[647]
solar panel to charge our power station
[650]
and while here in sunny florida we're
[652]
finding it actually charges rather
[654]
quickly through the solar panel hookup
[657]
and we can actually charge our devices
[660]
simultaneously
[661]
while charging it with the solar panel
[664]
one thing we love about the to go solar
[665]
panel is it's foldable which means it's
[668]
very easy to transport it even zips
[671]
closed so that while it's in our
[674]
basement compartment of our rv or in the
[676]
back of our jeep it's protected and we
[679]
can transport it safely and easily plus
[683]
with the folding stands in the back it
[685]
makes it very easy to set up at just the
[687]
right angle to maximize the sunshine to
[690]
charge the power station so we are super
[692]
happy to have the to go power station in
[695]
our rv tool arsenal you can find it at
[698]
the link in the description below tip
[700]
number three check with your insurance
[703]
company to see if you potentially have
[705]
roadside assistance as part of your
[707]
insurance after we switched over to
[709]
progressive insurance we found out that
[711]
we actually had roadside assistance that
[713]
covered our motorhome and it even
[715]
covered our motor home in the event we
[717]
needed to be towed with no out-of-pocket
[720]
maximums as far as a dollar amount was
[722]
concerned that was different than our
[724]
prior insurance provider that we had
[727]
when we broke down that time in arizona
[729]
so you don't want to be paying double
[731]
for something so double check with your
[733]
insurance provider to see if the type of
[735]
roadside coverage that they have for
[737]
your rv policy covers you for those
[740]
roadside emergencies as well tip number
[743]
four rv dealers are way packed up with
[747]
repairs so if you end up needing a
[750]
repair that is causing you to not be
[753]
able to move on right so this is a
[755]
repair that your motor home is not
[757]
drivable without having had made or your
[759]
trailer is not towable without having
[761]
this repair made
[763]
check with either heavy truck shops if
[765]
you have a drivable rv or check with
[768]
trailer shops if you have a towable rv
[771]
we've had very good luck with being able
[773]
to find service that is able to get us
[775]
in very very quickly by using
[778]
caterpillar or freightliner dealers
[780]
because we have a diesel pusher any sort
[783]
of heavy duty truck shop that works on
[785]
say like ups or fedex trucks can usually
[788]
work on motorhomes as well
[790]
and a lot of times different trailer
[793]
shops that work on say horse trailers or
[795]
utility trailers can also work on the
[798]
chassis part so your axles tires wheels
[801]
breaks of any sort of rv chassis as well
[805]
so you'll have to let us know in the
[806]
comments below what your experience has
[808]
been with roadside providers and if
[809]
you've ever had to call roadside
[811]
assistance for your rv and how that
[813]
situation turned out we would love to
[815]
know in the comments below
[818]
just what your experience has been or if
[820]
you have a roadside company that you're
[822]
just super happy with let us know that
[824]
in the comments below as well thanks so
[826]
much for watching this video if you
[827]
would like to see more videos with
[829]
really fun places to visit and travel
[831]
with your rv check those out right over
[833]
here and if you would like to see some
[835]
of our rv renovation series if maybe
[837]
you're considering that or just curious
[839]
you can check those out right over here
[841]
if we don't see on the road or at the
[843]
campground we'll see in the next video
