How to start a Voice Acting Career (vo demos, agents, auditions, more) - YouTube

Channel: unknown

[0]
what up world it's me Brizzy or Anna
[2]
Brisbane I'm a youtuber I'm a screen
[5]
actor I'm a Ravenclaw but primarily I
[8]
consider myself a voice actor now I'm
[10]
still young bright-eyed bushy-tailed and
[12]
new to Los Angeles but I do have a few
[15]
animations and video games under my belt
[17]
such as Final Fantasy 15 monster of the
[19]
deep and paradigm and I get asked for
[21]
this a lot so here is my humble advice
[23]
on how to make voice acting your career
[26]
I've said it before but the first thing
[27]
that must be said in any video of this
[29]
nature is voice acting is acting I know
[32]
most people come to my channel for
[34]
impressions but just because you can do
[35]
good impressions or a lot of silly
[37]
voices or you have a really nice sexy
[40]
sounding voice doesn't mean you can have
[42]
a career in voiceover because it's not
[43]
about how many voices you have or what
[45]
kind of voice you have it's about how
[48]
many characters you can believably act
[50]
this mic keeps falling which is one
[53]
reason I don't use this mic stand for
[55]
actual voiceover step one get a mic
[57]
stand the wicks I'm failing all right
[59]
and if all their voices are pretty much
[61]
the same so be it Patrick Warburton is
[64]
doing great because he's a magnetic
[66]
actor who lives as his characters so you
[69]
gotta get your acting chops down pat
[71]
first and never stop working on it and
[74]
getting better join a theater group
[75]
audition for plays and short films sign
[78]
up for acting classes and improv classes
[80]
anything you can do to hone your skills
[83]
especially if it's live on stage
[84]
starting right now
[86]
understood still interested the whole
[88]
like acting spiel then scare you off
[90]
you're still interested in this voice
[92]
acting thing cool movie god types the
[94]
voiceover jobs if you're living your
[96]
life like the majority of us in this
[98]
society you're most likely hearing
[101]
voiceover all day every day maybe
[103]
without even realizing it because there
[105]
is voiceover in everything there's the
[107]
obvious like animation cartoons
[110]
interactive which is video games mobile
[112]
games any sort of game that you interact
[114]
with that has voices commercial whether
[117]
it's for radio TV or Internet promo
[119]
which could mean trailers something
[122]
promoting something happening on TV like
[124]
tonight at 8:00 p.m. central Eastern
[127]
what do they say audio book narrations
[130]
radio dramas you know that
[132]
old-school narrative this is just audio
[135]
they still make those they're just
[136]
usually in podcasts these days I'm on
[139]
one called Dark One's about all the
[141]
classic Universal Monsters you know
[142]
exact EULA and the invisible men and
[145]
werewolf and all of that I'm the wolf
[146]
man or wolf woman her name is Ella ADR
[150]
which stands for additional dialogue
[151]
recording that's when you're dubbing
[153]
over something or adding in some extra
[155]
voices in the background you know how
[157]
movies have actors as extras in the
[159]
background
[160]
well those extras need voices and that's
[162]
what a loop group or wala does and you
[165]
need them for cartoons - it's like
[166]
extras but just your voices also
[169]
sometimes you need to ADR with voice
[171]
matching when the original actor isn't
[172]
available for some reason translations
[175]
with a piece of media is being dubbed
[176]
into your language such as anime
[179]
eLearning
[180]
so basically the narration of any sort
[182]
of educational media whether it's like
[185]
business training video or some sort of
[189]
language learning audio experience
[193]
telephone and IVR which stands for
[195]
interactive voice response it's that
[197]
little voice you hear on an automated
[199]
phone call when it's like press one for
[200]
English where can I make a living as a
[203]
voice actor there are so many options
[205]
for where to live to make a living as a
[208]
voice actor and at the same time there
[210]
are very few great options Los Angeles
[214]
is and probably always will be the main
[217]
hub for the majority of sections of
[221]
voiceover the majority of the big
[223]
animation and movie and TV and video
[227]
game studios are in Los Angeles if you
[230]
want to focus your career on commercial
[232]
you could do pretty well in New York
[234]
City because a lot of huge advertising
[236]
agencies are based out of New York I've
[238]
also heard there are great opportunities
[240]
in Chicago and Montreal and Vancouver
[243]
don't actually know much about that but
[245]
this is what I've heard so if you're
[247]
very antsy in New York or Los Angeles
[248]
for some reason you got options there
[251]
there's also Dallas Texas if you're
[252]
super interested in anime because that
[254]
is where Funimation is based so a lot of
[257]
anime comes out of Texas online it is
[260]
difficult but it's possible good luck
[263]
it's I mean it's a place to start
[265]
you're just getting started online can
[267]
get you somewhere but to work from home
[269]
online you need a home studio in a home
[273]
studio the most important thing is to
[276]
have a well treated room far beyond more
[279]
important than having an expensive fancy
[281]
microphone second only to building a
[284]
custom soundproof room your best option
[286]
is a walk-in closet with a bunch of
[288]
clothes my first home studio was like a
[291]
2x4 foot closet in my apartment in New
[294]
York City I ground myself up into a ball
[296]
sitting down with my laptop and my blue
[299]
snowball microphone USB mic and I
[302]
recorded my first auditions and jobs
[304]
from there so yeah blue snowball not the
[307]
worst place to start you can get a used
[309]
one on eBay for like 30 bucks or less
[311]
it's not a great mic by any means but
[314]
it's a good place to start practicing
[316]
you also need a pop filter ten bucks on
[318]
Amazon and if you're ready to up your
[320]
microphone game you can then get a
[321]
condenser mic which plugs into a preamp
[324]
which then connects to your computer
[326]
currently I use the rode nt1-a which is
[329]
$230 on Amazon and for a preamp I use
[332]
the focusrite scarlett solo which is
[335]
$120 on Amazon and just from my videos I
[338]
use this which is a shure PG 42 USB mic
[342]
goes straight to computer very nice if
[345]
you want to level up even higher and
[347]
fork up a couple thousand dollars for a
[349]
microphone that's an option but if
[352]
you're at that level you've clearly
[353]
already got yourself a voiceover teacher
[355]
or a coach and/or an agent so I would
[358]
suggest talking to them and seeing what
[360]
they recommend for you specifically
[363]
because that's a lot of money learn to
[365]
record an edit on an easy free program
[368]
like audacity or GarageBand super easy
[372]
there's YouTube tutorials on how to do
[374]
everything in the world you can do it I
[377]
believe in you finding an agent agents
[380]
find you auditions for the best projects
[382]
that are right for you they negotiate
[383]
your payment and they make sure you get
[386]
paid and for that they take 10 to 15
[388]
percent of your earnings
[390]
that job if an agent is telling you they
[392]
charge you anything upfront run away
[395]
danger agents should only ever ever ever
[398]
be taking a small percentage of the jobs
[401]
they get you so you need an agent to get
[402]
jobs but you need to have jobs to get an
[406]
agent I mean no you don't you don't need
[409]
one immediately but you do need one
[412]
eventually if you want to start doing
[414]
consistent bigger jobs so before you're
[416]
ready for bigger jobs you got to do
[418]
smaller jobs and before you're ready for
[421]
smaller jobs you got to do free jobs and
[425]
if you hate the idea of voice acting for
[429]
free this is probably not the job for
[432]
you because you need to get experience
[434]
and have fun honing your skills be
[437]
stoked that you get to do this because
[439]
it's freaking fun man go to behind the
[442]
voice actors comm slash casting call and
[444]
audition for some amateur projects lots
[446]
of them are fan projects for existing
[448]
franchises so you might be asked to do
[450]
some voice matches like I see some fan
[453]
projects here for super Dragon Ball
[455]
heroes and spider-man and Paper Mario
[458]
and some are original projects where you
[461]
can create your own original voices and
[464]
work along with the director to develop
[466]
those you know fun police acting stuff
[469]
so after you do a bunch of that before
[472]
you get an agent you might want to sign
[474]
up for a website like voice 1 2 3 comm
[477]
where you may end up booking some paid
[480]
gigs exciting yes but don't expect this
[485]
to pay the bills sites like these can be
[487]
great training grounds for building your
[488]
confidence with auditioning and
[490]
communicating with clients and just
[492]
straight-up work experience and honing
[494]
your voice acting but it's definitely
[496]
not the big leagues and they don't
[497]
really pay well or often even fairly you
[500]
may even have to pay to use the site and
[503]
send in your auditions so if that's not
[505]
your bag don't do it you don't need to
[507]
do it instead of paying to audition for
[509]
low paying jobs I would recommend
[512]
working for free on fun projects
[514]
creating your own projects and investing
[517]
in your training and eventually a good
[520]
demo unless you have a personal
[522]
connection or some other out
[524]
standing circumstance you'll need a
[526]
great demo to get a great agent but
[528]
don't pay for an expensive demo until
[530]
you know you're ready and don't send a
[532]
homemade demoed agents believe if it's
[535]
not up to par with the great actors they
[536]
already have on their roster
[538]
they're not gonna dig it and that might
[540]
hurt your chances later down the line
[542]
I'll leave a link down there to a
[543]
YouTube playlist of professional
[546]
voice-over demos from actors you might
[548]
recognize to show you how good
[550]
professional voice-over demos can and
[553]
should sound I think the most effective
[555]
way to get a good agent rather than
[558]
emailing your demo out to a person who's
[560]
never heard of you before is to get out
[562]
there and make stuff of your own I mean
[564]
that's what this YouTube channel is all
[566]
about that's why I started this channel
[568]
almost seven years ago because I wanted
[570]
to get more into voiceover and I wanted
[573]
to be proactive about that start making
[575]
stuff on my own and this channel is what
[577]
has gotten me connections to agents and
[580]
casting directors for video games and
[582]
cartoons start a YouTube channel join a
[584]
theater or an improv troupe make a web
[586]
series or a short film or a radio drama
[589]
make friends with people who also want
[591]
to make things from all sides of it
[593]
writers directors actors animators so
[596]
you can all get together and make your
[598]
own original little beautiful butterfly
[601]
creations if your heart is in it and you
[604]
keep it up you will get better and your
[606]
work will get better and people will
[609]
notice and yes agents are people too and
[612]
then the agent will ask for your great
[614]
demo and you will have it because you've
[617]
been training and you did your research
[619]
and you found someone awesome to make
[622]
you an awesome demo how lucky right you
[625]
know what they say luck is when
[627]
preparation meets opportunity
[629]
auditioning your audition should simply
[632]
be you slating which is saying your name
[635]
and the character's name and a Brisbane
[637]
reading for cindy-lou who and your
[640]
characters lines don't read the other
[642]
characters lines and don't have anyone
[643]
else to do it either those are just
[645]
they're so you know what's going on and
[647]
don't read the directions like Cindy Lou
[649]
who walks up to the grinch and smacks
[651]
them in the face do add some nonverbal
[655]
sounds like whimper
[657]
hesitations or squeaks or arnold
[661]
sniffles where it feels appropriate and
[664]
don't add any external sound effects or
[667]
music to make it sound legit improv once
[670]
or twice to help your reed stand out
[672]
nothing that'll transform the script or
[674]
be distracting just a few words or a
[677]
line or two just especially if it'll
[679]
make them laugh never hurts
[681]
title your files clearly and efficiently
[684]
unless you're told otherwise of course
[685]
use your name underscore character's
[688]
name underscore your agency if you have
[692]
one and export it as an mp3 unless
[693]
you're asked otherwise if it's a job and
[695]
not just an audition they probably want
[697]
a dot Wow
[698]
but ask them if they haven't told you if
[701]
you want more detailed information on my
[703]
do's and don'ts of auditioning there's
[704]
so much that could be said please give a
[707]
thumbs up on this video so I know for
[709]
one people are interested in more voice
[711]
acting career stuff and to comment and
[714]
tell me you specifically want the
[715]
auditioning thing so I know joining the
[718]
Union sag AFTRA the Screen Actors Guild
[722]
American Federation of television and
[725]
radio artists is that it yes I think
[728]
that's the first time I've actually said
[730]
it out loud by myself without reading it
[732]
there's a union for actors who want to
[734]
work on good projects for good money
[736]
under fair and safe conditions its
[739]
protection for an actor's livelihood and
[741]
eventually its health insurance it's
[743]
also the big leagues and membership is
[746]
not cheap so don't feel like you need to
[748]
run headfirst into the union you don't
[750]
want to do that grand majority of the
[752]
big live-action and animated shows and
[755]
movies commercials and video games are
[758]
Union however I'm pretty sure most anime
[762]
is non-union but not very well versed
[764]
there so sorry you'll join the Union
[767]
when you're cast in a job that requires
[769]
you to become unions so until that
[771]
happens don't worry about it in the
[774]
meantime I think my best advice is just
[776]
to keep your head in the game
[778]
remember your goals and don't become
[780]
complacent surround your life with this
[783]
thing that you want to do and never stop
[786]
thriving to learn
[788]
become better at it listen to podcasts
[790]
like talking tunes Rob Paulsen which I
[792]
was just a guest on hey and vo buzz
[795]
weekly are both great conversational
[798]
interview style podcasts they're fun and
[802]
educational and inspirational just
[804]
conversations between voice acting
[806]
professionals and other voice actors or
[809]
casting directors or agents and people
[811]
in the business whose names and stories
[814]
are just important to hear voice acting
[816]
mastery with Crispin Freeman is a more
[818]
teaching heavy direct podcast from
[821]
Crispin himself with some interviews
[823]
thrown in if you're more into that and
[825]
invest in training acting classes or
[829]
school voiceover classes improv class
[832]
singing lessons no matter where you are
[834]
in the world you can do online courses
[836]
like gravy for the brain comm which
[838]
provides specific detailed courses and
[840]
webinars on topics like commercials
[843]
video games demos agents audiobooks any
[848]
kind of focused lesson you want to hear
[850]
about which is hopefully everything just
[852]
make sure before you dish out the big
[854]
bucks on any sort of class that you do
[856]
your research let them read reviews hear
[859]
what people have to say about these
[861]
people because there are a lot of duds
[863]
out there just trying to take your money
[866]
for example if a class offers to make
[868]
your vo demo for you at the end of the
[870]
class don't do it any teacher worth
[875]
their salt will not tell you to make a
[877]
demo until you already more resources
[880]
voiceover voice actor is a book by Yuri
[882]
Lowenthal and Tara Platt it is helpful
[885]

[891]

[893]

[915]
an entire series of YouTube videos
[918]
purely based on the lessons taught on
[920]
