Hi, my name is Raina Ryan. I graduated with my聽MPA in 2020. I chose McGeorge because I have a聽聽
[14]
background in environmental science and California聽really sets the nation for environmental聽聽
[19]
sets the stage for environmental policy in聽
the nation and I wanted to be at the heart of聽聽
[23]
things in Sacramento and the MPA program here聽
at McGeorge is set in a law school and having聽聽
[28]
those law professors and classes available to聽
you is really an advantage. Hi my name is Max Huynh聽聽
[34]
I graduated in 2021 and I decided to get my MPA聽
because I wanted to get involved in the public聽聽
[40]
sector and I thought McGeorge would be the perfect聽
place to do that. Hi my name is Katie ramsey I am a聽聽
[45]
McGeorge graduate of 2019. I received my Master's聽
in Public Administration with the concentration of聽聽
[53]
Health Policy Finance and Management. I chose聽
to come to Sacramento from the East Coast聽聽
[58]
because I had the environmental background and I
knew I wanted to get more involved with the policy聽聽
[63]
aspect of things and California just it sets the聽
stage for policy nationally. I picked McGeorge well聽聽
[69]
first because of the practicality of it. I work a聽
full-time job and I didn't want to stop working my聽聽
[75]
full-time job to go to school so that was also a聽
big component. I'd also had a friend who'd went聽聽
[80]
to McGeorge and he had nothing but great things to聽
say about McGeorge so I decided it was the perfect聽聽
[86]
program for me. I am born and raised in Lodi,聽
California which is not very far from Sacramento.聽聽
[92]
This campus again really drew me for all聽
of the networking events for being a part of聽聽
[99]
the service driven community environment that is聽
here on campus, all of the collective work that the聽聽
[106]
entire campus and community do together. A lot of聽
the the networking, a lot of the new policies, a lot聽聽
[111]
of the cool stuff that kind of disseminates into聽
the other states and disseminates into the larger聽聽
[117]
federal government comes from Sacramento so聽
I think it's a great place to be if you're聽聽
[121]
wanting to start a career in the public sector.聽
I am currently a program director for Positions聽聽
[127]
for Healthy California which is a non-profit聽
association here in Sacramento. So shortly聽聽
[132]
before graduation I was able to accept my first聽
position with the state of California. I wrote聽聽
[138]
administered grants and the work I did at McGeorge,聽
the writing, the public speaking skills really聽聽
[145]
helped me out with that and the professors were聽
super supportive during the program. They helped聽聽
[150]
me kind of map my career path, they really gave聽
me the confidence I needed to understand how to聽聽
[154]
go out and interview how to navigate the state聽
system and recently I've accepted a position聽聽
[160]
with the Department of Toxic Substances Control as聽
an environmental scientist and I really
[165]
contribute that to what I learned at McGeorge and聽
you know the support of the faculty, our programs聽聽
[171]
really applied so you know they were more than聽
happy to help me tailor my coursework to my areas聽聽
[176]
of interest and just the support I received聽
both during the program and after graduation聽聽
[182]
So I currently work for a non-profit of physicians聽
for Healthy California. We administer a grant聽聽
[187]
for physicians and dentists to see聽
Medi-Cal patients. I've had a long聽聽
[193]
history with you know with being on Medi-Cal聽
myself and it's really tied to my interest聽聽
[198]
just because I can help physicians do their聽
jobs and I can help people on Medi-Cal聽聽
[203]
receive the care they need. Yeah you know the聽
professors at McGeorge really really helped me聽聽
[209]
Professor Kirlin really helps you understand聽
the policy framework and how to navigate聽聽
[217]
you know technical problems and things. I've been聽
able to kind of connect every class to what I've聽聽
[222]
been doing so classes like leadership聽
I've been able to use in the workplace.聽聽
[226]
Classes like the Finance class聽
I've been able to use in the workplace and聽聽
[231]
so it's all very interconnected that everything聽
is really practical they give you the kind of聽聽
[238]
the ideological frameworks but if you're聽
working a full-time job and if you're in the聽聽
[243]
public sector or even in the private sector like聽
consulting you really have the opportunity to use聽聽
[248]
what you've learned in classes. I really took聽
advantage of all of the networking and career聽聽
[254]
opportunities that they have here at McGeorge.聽
The Career Development Center was helpful in聽聽
[260]
getting essays, written resumes, getting the orange聽
binder and really it had the orange binder has a聽聽
[267]
lot of different helpful tasks in helping you聽
along the way through your career development聽聽
[273]
and finding new opportunities for yourself. So I 聽
networked with my teachers, I met them after class聽聽
[279]
I networked with my peers, met with them聽
after class and really just got to know each聽聽
[284]
person. I mean I use those relationships every聽
single day to help me as well as help others
[296]
you.
