Tulsi Gabbard slams COVID relief bill as a 'slap in the face' to Americans - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[1]
so joining me now is chelsea gabbard
[3]
congresswoman from hawaii she is one of
[5]
two house democrats who broke with their
[6]
party and voted against the stimulus
[8]
bill
[8]
and she joins us now uh congresswoman
[10]
great to have you here tonight thank you
[12]
for being here
[13]
so why did you vote against the bill
[15]
because this bill was a slap in the face
[17]
to the american people
[18]
people who are sitting in their cars
[21]
waiting in line for hours to get free
[23]
food from the food bank
[24]
people who've been without jobs for
[26]
months people who are
[28]
are concerned about getting evicted from
[30]
their apartments or their homes
[31]
because they haven't been able to pay
[32]
their rent uh to say that
[35]
it's okay to give hundreds of billions
[37]
of dollars to corporate special
[39]
interests to foreign countries
[41]
uh to the military-industrial complex
[43]
but to the american people who are
[45]
struggling and suffering and who need
[46]
help the most
[47]
you get 600 bucks it's an absolute
[51]
insult and the american people
[52]
deserve better you know
[56]
on the defense bill uh as i said there
[59]
is seven billion dollars in there we
[61]
heard
[61]
from uh general miller chairman of the
[63]
joint chiefs that he is very concerned
[65]
about the
[66]
chinese build-up of the navy he feels
[67]
that we are
[69]
unprepared um in terms of our naval
[72]
ships
[72]
and he wants to put that money towards
[74]
that do you think that that
[76]
is a wise idea and how ready do you
[79]
think we are
[80]
given your own experience and uh your
[82]
service in iraq
[84]
oh that that's a very big topic about
[86]
our defense
[87]
priorities and and whether you look at
[89]
the big massive spending bill that
[92]
i voted against a couple of nights ago
[94]
that's that's one area where we should
[96]
be asking questions about how are
[98]
taxpayer dollars being used in a
[100]
responsible way that best serves the
[102]
emergency that we're facing
[104]
i think you're also talking about uh
[106]
this national defense
[107]
authorization act uh it is i've actually
[110]
voted against this bill when it came to
[112]
the house floor
[113]
for a couple of reasons number one it is
[115]
a massive
[116]
bloated spending bill it heightens up
[119]
the the new cold war we are in with
[122]
uh increasing tensions between the
[124]
united states and russia and china
[126]
really with serious consequences we're
[128]
talking about nuclear-armed nations here
[131]
and we've got to focus on how we can
[133]
best de-escalate
[135]
those tensions but it also includes a
[137]
provision in there that ties
[139]
this president or any president's hands
[142]
as they're trying to bring our troops
[144]
home from afghanistan so you know i know
[147]
trump vetoed this bill earlier today and
[149]
one of the main reasons he did so was
[152]
because of this provision
[153]
section 230 right this thing that has to
[156]
do with
[157]
giving big tech companies like google
[159]
and facebook and amazon
[161]
total legal immunity and the reason why
[164]
he's taken a stand on this and i support
[166]
his position on this
[167]
is because congress has failed to act in
[170]
in
[170]
making sure that the american people
[172]
have a
[173]
fair and free opportunity to the public
[176]
square and to make sure that these tech
[178]
companies that are censoring people that
[180]
are choosing whose voices are heard and
[182]
whose aren't
[182]
taking sides in political elections that
[185]
they are not
[186]
immune from lawsuits and so i think it's
[189]
a critical thing to hold congress's feet
[191]
to the fire because
[192]
i've introduced legislation to to fix
[194]
section 230
[196]
other people have as well they have
[197]
failed to take action and the american
[199]
people
[200]
deserve to know that these big
[203]
corporations
[204]
uh don't have greater influence over
[207]
their representatives in congress
[209]
than the american people do which is
[210]
unfortunately the situation that we're
[212]
in right now
[214]
yeah um just quickly before i let you go
[216]
i know that you spoke out about the fact
[218]
that some members of congress like
[219]
alexander ocasio-cortez
[221]
uh was showing off her vaccination she
[224]
did a cute instagram video
[226]
of you know the whole thing and it sort
[228]
of rubbed a lot of people the wrong way
[231]
what do you want to say about that
[232]
tonight
[234]
um okay i think of people like my aunt
[237]
who's
[238]
you know she's 65 years old she has a
[240]
severe
[241]
uh underlying health condition that's
[244]
compromised her immune system
[245]
she ca she has basically been imprisoned
[248]
in her home
[248]
because she knows that if she goes out
[250]
she faces a very real danger
[252]
of dying if she catches covet it is
[255]
people like my aunt it is the elderly
[257]
the most vulnerable
[258]
who should be getting this vaccine first
[260]
right alongside our first responders and
[263]
and high-risk health care workers
[265]
because this is
[266]
this is really a matter of life and
[268]
death for them uh for others
[270]
if my colleagues i've called on them if
[272]
members of congress if you are healthy
[274]
if you were under the age of 65
[276]
join me in refusing to get the vaccine
[278]
at least
[279]
until our seniors and elderly americans
[282]
are able to do so
[284]
yeah i think a lot of people agree with
[286]
you on that congresswoman great to have
[288]
you here tonight thank you very much
