Flying Delta Air Lines Can Be Better with... Credit Cards?! (How Easy!) | TPG - YouTube

Channel: The Points Guy | TPG

[0]
- Delta is one of the best,
[3]
okay, the best, U.S. carriers to deal with.
[6]
Now, I've flown a million miles on Delta,
[9]
so I've earned some pretty nice perks through Elite status.
[12]
But even if you're just a casual Delta flyer,
[15]
you can get a lot of those perks
[16]
by holding the right card.
[18]
So let's talk about some of the cards that I have
[20]
in my wallet, and then some that you're better off skipping,
[23]
if you're looking to get the best Delta experience.
[26]
As the TPG Delta Connoisseur, let's talk about the first
[29]
card you should consider.
[30]
That's the Delta Reserve card from American Express.
[33]
Now this is the creme de la creme of all Delta cards,
[36]
and it packs a serious punch.
[38]
Now just for signing up and holding this card,
[41]
you get a buy one, get one companion pass each year
[44]
in first class, access to Delta's global network
[47]
of Sky Club lounges, a free checked bag,
[50]
priority boarding, and some other Amex perks
[52]
like purchase protection, warranty extension,
[55]
and even baggage delay insurance.
[57]
The $450 dollar annual fee may seem steep,
[60]
but it's even less than just the Sky Club
[62]
membership itself, which retails for over $500 dollars.
[65]
Not to mention that buy one, get one
[67]
first class seat you get.
[69]
So if you're a small business owner or consultant,
[71]
consider the Delta Reserve for Business card.
[73]
Now with this card, you get all of the perks
[75]
I just mentioned, but there's one big bonus.
[78]
You can have employee cards, so each version of this card
[81]
that you give to an employee, whenever they spend money,
[84]
you, as the business owner, will earn miles
[86]
into that master account.
[88]
Alright, so now let's talk about
[89]
my second favorite Delta card.
[90]
That would be the Platinum card from American Express.
[94]
Now this card doesn't even have Delta branding on it,
[96]
but it's really useful to consider if you're a semi-frequent
[99]
or frequent flyer with Delta.
[101]
So you may be wondering why you would want a card
[103]
with Delta that's not a Delta card.
[106]
Well, the Amex Platinum is the only non-Delta card
[110]
that still gets your free access to Delta's global network
[113]
of Sky Club airline lounges, and that's a big deal.
[116]
But in addition to that,
[117]
it offers a ton of other travel related perks.
[120]
So if you're already silver or gold,
[122]
and you've got Priority Boarding and free checked bags
[124]
taken care of, the rest of the Amex Platinum perks
[127]
may make more sense for you.
[129]
Now the Amex Platinum offers a ton of travel benefits
[132]
that the Delta Reserve doesn't.
[134]
So if you travel a lot, these may be interesting to you.
[137]
We're talking Gold elite status in the new
[140]
Marriott Bonvoy program without any stay requirements,
[143]
Gold elite status in the Hilton Honors, also with no stay
[146]
requirements, a fee credit to cover Global Entry
[149]
and TSA Pre check, both of which are vital services
[152]
for air travelers who value their time.
[155]
(sighs)
[156]
Okay.
[157]
There's a few more, monthly Uber credits,
[160]
free Boingo Wi-Fi, Elite status in three of the biggest
[163]
car rental agencies, access to Amex Centurion lounges
[167]
at airports across the globe,
[168]
and the ability to transfer your points to partners,
[171]
including Delta's own Sky Miles program.
[175]
(sighs)
[176]
That's a long list to run down, but that's great news
[180]
for you signing up.
[181]
Now, if you weren't already aware,
[182]
the Amex Platinum earns five X on any airfare purchase,
[185]
including Delta, so once you have those points,
[188]
you can transfer them into your Sky Miles account
[191]
for more free flights.
[192]
Now that actually trumps the two X earned
[194]
on the Delta Reserve.
[195]
So technically, you're better off buying Delta tickets
[198]
with an Amex Platinum.
[200]
It has a $550 annual fee, which is pretty steep,
[203]
but that's easily recouped by even semi-frequent travelers.
[206]
Okay so let's talk about the rest.
[208]
Delta offers co-branded Amex cards at the Gold
[211]
and Platinum level, and while they have lower annual fees,
[214]
I wouldn't really recommend them.
[216]
They don't offer a whole lot beyond Priority boarding
[219]
and a free checked bag.
[220]
And you're still gonna be
[221]
on your own for lounge access.
[222]
So given that, I'd recommend springing for one of the
[225]
premium cards like the Delta Reserve
[226]
or the American Express platinum card.
