tony welcome i actually look at supply
[2]
chain for apple as an advantage because
[5]
of its vertical integration its scale
[8]
the way it buys priority with suppliers
[11]
like corning but that doesn't
[13]
necessarily mean that it should be
[15]
trading at the multiple that it is now
[16]
how much of a benefit do you give apple
[18]
for its supply chain strength
[22]
uh good morning john look apple has
[26]
as you mentioned
[27]
always
[29]
had
[30]
very strong supply chain management and
[33]
sourcing
[34]
they are pretty good about dual sourcing
[37]
most of their products
[39]
they have a
[40]
relatively
[42]
strong track record of being able to
[45]
manufacture even in times of turmoil and
[49]
and that's largely expected uh by the
[51]
company i i think the the issue that you
[54]
raised is we are in an unusual time
[57]
coveted lockdowns are prevalent in china
[60]
they were particularly prevalent in
[62]
april and apple isn't anticipating that
[65]
they will be impacted in terms of their
[67]
ability to manufacture product in the
[68]
quarter but i also think more broadly
[72]
investors are getting worried about
[74]
consumer demand uh that we may be
[76]
entering uh into a period of slower
[78]
economic growth
[80]
that europe european demand is being
[82]
impacted by uh the war in ukraine um and
[86]
that
[87]
as a result
[89]
they don't feel quite as confident in
[91]
the earnings outlook for apple as they
[93]
did
[94]
90 days ago now i guess the counter to
[97]
that would be looking at for example
[99]
walmart versus home depot earlier this
[102]
week we saw
[103]
a walmart doing more grocery business
[106]
which is lower margin as people look for
[107]
deals but on the higher end the home
[109]
depot customer was buying less but they
[111]
were paying more for what they really
[114]
wanted to buy and isn't that apple's
[116]
sweet spot with the m1 max with the
[119]
iphones people are still going to need
[121]
phones they're going to need
[122]
laptops and computers if they're willing
[125]
to pay a premium price performance wise
[127]
does that play into apple's successful
[129]
vertical integration up to this point
[132]
well apple is has always been a a
[135]
premium
[136]
uh priced premium experience company
[139]
whether it be their products or their
[141]
services and so they do have very strong
[143]
premiums to um to other products in the
[146]
marketplace
[148]
you know that said um
[150]
apple really benefited i think in
[152]
hindsight
[153]
from
[155]
consumers wallets during the pandemic
[157]
people were not traveling people were
[160]
not going out to dinner many were
[163]
getting government subsidies and as a
[166]
result they had money to spend on
[169]
electronics on tablets on macs and to
[172]
some degree on higher priced iphones and
[174]
so i i think one concern is not only
[177]
might we have a slowing overall economic
[180]
environment for which apple is not
[182]
immune
[183]
but i think the other thing is is that
[185]
we may have ultimately
[187]
had
[188]
excess demand for apple products above
[191]
trend because the consumer was
[193]
relatively flash and the converse is now
[195]
true where the wallet size may be the
[197]
same or even smaller for people who were
[200]
getting subsidies
[201]
and yet they're traveling uh they're
[204]
going out to dinner and they're having
[206]
more experiences and i and i you know
[209]
when we look at apple i think in the
[210]
preceding five years
[213]
to last year fiscal 21 the company grew
[216]
its ebit by about five percent of the
[218]
year last year grew 66 percent
[221]
why did that happen in part because
[223]
consumers were flush i mean apple also
[225]
had a great product lineup but consumers
[227]
were flush and so the concern is we have
[231]
both a potentially slowing economy and a
[233]
slowing consumer spend but we also have
[236]
um you know the risk that that apple
[239]
consumers may have effectively forward
[242]
bought
[243]
last year
