READING VLOG | The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by VE Schwab Review - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[52]
Hello! So I just literally just got home. The storm聽last night was absolutely insane - wait I didn't聽聽
[61]
really start this vlog, did I? No I didn't. Hi,聽hello! Ee are going to be doing a reading vlog聽聽
[67]
for Addie LaRue by VE Schwab. I've been waiting聽for this book for a very long time. I bought the聽聽
[72]
version of the - the cover that I liked the most. I got this on Book Depository which reminds me - 聽聽
[79]
Oh my gosh, no that was the perfect segue! Cari, great job for once. Let me pull up the information聽聽
[86]
so that I tell you the correct things. So Book聽
Depository is an online bookstore that delivers聽聽
[92]
worldwide. I live in Korea so it's often聽quite expensive to get books to come over here but聽聽
[97]
with Book Depository, it is possible and you can聽also pick - they have a lot of different versions聽聽
[103]
so I believe this is the British version. I just聽know that American book covers tend to be a little meh聽聽
[111]
so it's nice that you can choose. They聽have hardcover, paperback etc. You can聽聽
[116]
get whatever you want no matter where you are in聽the world. Anyway they are giving a little end聽聽
[121]
of the year discount so from December 3rd to December 10th, if you use my code cari10 you'll聽聽
[128]
get 10% off any fiction book and the reason that聽it's only until the 10th is because they want to聽聽
[134]
make sure that you get your books in time for聽Christmas so ordering at that time would be聽聽
[139]
an excellent idea but also just be aware -聽I feel like everybody's holiday shopping聽聽
[144]
is gonna be messed up - because of the world聽right now, shipping is a little bit weird but聽聽
[150]
overall you get your books! So thank聽you to Book Depository for giving y'all a聽聽
[156]
discount 10% off. Lovely. But my thoughts on Addie聽LaRue. I am on page 78. Like I said, I knew a聽聽
[163]
little bit about it but I didn't know that it聽would take place in New York City and聽聽
[169]
it's in like relatively modern-day even though聽it was - man 2014 was six years ago okay - I digress.聽聽
[175]
It's modern day. So my general feelings on the聽book is I really enjoy it so far. VE Schwab is聽聽
[180]
pulling out all the poetic writing stuff that she does. It's a little bit much for me because I聽聽
[186]
just want to get into the action. It's a lot聽of scene setting, it's a lot of like flowery聽聽
[192]
verse which makes it really beautiful to read聽but if you want to dive into the plot it's聽聽
[198]
a little like, come on VE Schwab, let's go. I feel like it's a book that I'll appreciate聽聽
[203]
more when I read it the second time because right聽now I'm just itching to know the plot and I think聽聽
[208]
if I read it again the second time I can actually聽like sink into the words and the feelings, you know?聽聽
[214]
I don't know, I'm just - I'm kind of an impatient聽reader sometimes. But I have a big old complaint聽聽
[219]
because I have really been missing New York City聽- I consider New York City like my second home,聽聽
[225]
I went to university, there lived there for three/four years, I feel like I kind of grew up there聽聽
[230]
in short spurts. I have been missing it so much. I don't know if it's just because I'm not allowed to聽聽
[237]
go home or what but I just have been like aching聽with missing New York City and it has been made聽聽
[246]
so much worse because I started to watch Dash聽and Lily's Book of Dares on Netflix. I haven't聽聽
[252]
read the book. And it is almost freaky how - I'm on episode three and they literally go to聽聽
[260]
all of my favorite places. In the first scene she's聽walking next to my coffee shop, Think Coffee, right聽聽
[265]
next to the Strand where I lost my credit聽card once which was not fun but they kept it聽聽
[270]
and I got it back which is great. I'm even in聽
the book that I've talked about that I'm writing - 聽聽
[274]
starts in the Strand and a whole lot of it takes place in Washington Square Park! But anyway,聽聽
[279]
Addie - a big chunk of this so far has been taking聽place in New York and the way that she talks about聽聽
[284]
it, the way that she can just go into a movie聽
theater - that was my routine in New York when聽聽
[289]
I lived there, my Saturdays, I would聽just go to the IFC center and I would watch聽聽
[294]
whatever was playing to have Addie kind聽of do the same thing, like, I just felt so聽聽
[303]
sad. But it made me like really love the book,聽like I feel like I get Addie. I feel like I kind聽聽
[307]
of am her. Not her whole like 'curse deal with the聽devil' kind of thing but the way that she goes聽聽
[314]
about New York City. So Addie's whole curse is she聽has made a deal that she gets to be immortal but聽聽
[322]
the trick is that everybody forgets her like the聽second a door closes or she's out of sight she is聽聽
[329]
you know, out of sight out of mind. And I kind聽of felt that way when I lived in New York because聽聽
[334]
I would always like walk around alone and even聽though I kind of went to the same places I never聽聽
[339]
felt like people remembered me. It was always like聽I was just this stranger that walked in and once I聽聽
[344]
walked out it was you know whatever. So the way聽that VE Schwab writes Addie's life in New York聽聽
[350]
how she has all these really wonderful聽conversations or relationships with strangers聽聽
[354]
and then the next day like you never see聽them again or they don't remember you,聽聽
[358]
it like physically hurt me to read those. I'm less聽than 100 pages in and it's already like stirred up聽聽
[364]
a lot of emotions in me clearly. I'm really excited聽to continue reading this. It was a wonderful聽聽
[370]
gloomy day, it kind of made reading this really聽nice. I had my window seat, had my little cinnamon聽聽
[374]
scone and my hot coffee and just poured over聽Addie LaRue. I had my fun time and now it's the聽聽
[381]
afternoon so I get to work, so yes, okay VE Schwab,聽The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. Let's go.
[430]
Hi guys, so I'm in the mid 300s and I'm a little聽upset because it's like three quarters of the聽聽
[439]
book and nothing has really happened. It's聽starting to feel incredibly repetitive and I聽聽
[448]
don't like one of the main characters so I'm聽wondering if that is part of the plot or what.聽聽
[454]
Also when I said I really liked the poetic writing, I literally after that had to go back and see if聽聽
[460]
this was done on purpose - it has since stopped聽but the first 200 pages, almost every chapter聽聽
[466]
began with a simile and it sort of drove me crazy. So I don't know if it's just because I need a nap聽聽
[472]
or because I was reading another book聽simultaneously which is something I usually don't聽聽
[477]
do, but I'm honestly not into it which聽is crazy for a VE Schwab book. But I'm gonna take a聽聽
[483]
nap. I'm gonna step away from the book for a little聽bit, but yeah man, 345, the page I'm on and I'm like...聽聽
[494]
Hello everyone, so I'm filming this a second聽time and my camera's gonna die so we're gonna be聽聽
[497]
quick! Here's the thing about The Invisible Life聽of Addie LaRue. So I read from page, about聽聽
[503]
300 to the end so I did like a marathon sprint and聽it's about 540 pages. And it was not the book that I聽聽
[512]
expected and it wasn't the book that I wanted and聽that's of no fault of VE Schwab. I feel like as an聽聽
[520]
author this was probably a story that she had to聽write. Like this was like just one of those stories聽聽
[526]
that regardless of what was expected of her, this was a story she felt that she needed to tell聽聽
[530]
and so I get that i think that. There were so many聽parts of this that I just didn't understand why聽聽
[536]
they were there. This book was almost 600聽pages - I think it could have been less than 300聽聽
[541]
pages. I think she was trying to comment about聽life and, you know, what makes a life important.聽聽
[550]
To me, I just, it was so character-driven and I didn't fully love - there's basically only like聽聽
[557]
two and a half characters - I didn't really聽love one of them. I have felt no connection to聽聽
[562]
one of them so it was kind of confusing and not super interesting to me. Because聽聽
[568]
how the book really goes is - first 300聽
pages are scene-setting and then we kind of聽聽
[573]
change perspective for like a little bit and then聽there's a thing that happens that you're like "okay聽聽
[579]
here comes the action, this is when things are聽going to get real" and then thingy kind of happens聽聽
[587]
but it doesn't really and the ending is just, for聽me, the ending is like a sizzle and I think she聽聽
[594]
thought the ending was going to be a zing. But聽I will say in the beginning I said that I felt聽聽
[599]
very similar to Addie in many ways and right down聽to the end girl is stubborn as hell. When she was聽聽
[606]
like going on 300 years and she was like "and it's聽still a no." Same girl, same. I just don't know why聽聽
[615]
we were in Germany. I don't know they were there聽were just so many things that I maybe on another聽聽
[622]
read I would understand but as of right now I just don't know why they were in the book but I do聽聽
[628]
think that it brought up some interesting things聽about immortality. I'm always interested in that聽聽
[632]
because I've never given immortality a whole lot聽of thought before, like how complex it can be. The聽聽
[637]
way that she did this, how Addie can have so many聽intense emotions and relationships with people. You聽聽
[644]
know, people have their opinions about Cassandra聽Clare, but she also has a lot of characters that聽聽
[649]
deal with immortality. In most books we see聽a lot of like "they find their one true love聽聽
[655]
and they're together forever" but聽immortality brings up a lot of interesting things聽聽
[660]
where it's like, but you can have many great loves. You can love people just as much as another person聽聽
[668]
that you did you know however many years ago. So I did appreciate it in that aspect, how you can聽聽
[676]
live so many lives within one life even if聽
your life is only like a normal human lifespan.聽聽
[681]
So I don't know there were things聽that I really appreciated in this book.聽聽
[687]
It made me miss New York City so freaking badly. I underlined a lot of lines. Like I said, it was聽聽
[693]
beautiful writing. It got a little too聽much like I said it was just like too long.聽聽
[698]
I honestly think I might not have finished it if聽it hadn't been a VE Schwab book. I think that the聽聽
[703]
timeline skipping as well was very confusing. I聽don't know how to end this, I don't know how to聽聽
[710]
end this! I don't know I just - I think she had聽so many interesting points that she was trying聽聽
[716]
to make but she didn't really hit them home聽because she was too busy setting the scene.聽聽
[722]
I feel like people who like the Night Circus聽and the Starless Sea - people who liked those books聽聽
[729]
would also really like this book because again聽it was more just like ambiance than it was plot聽聽
[735]
and I feel like those two books were like 100% just聽aesthetic and not actual plot, because I was so聽聽
[743]
lost when I read those books. So I would say if聽those books are up your alley this book is up聽聽
[747]
your alley, but those books weren't my cup of聽tea. Anyway, I'm still so excited for the rest聽聽
[752]
of VE Schwab's work. I still love her to death聽and I still have lots of underlined thingies so聽聽
[760]
what else can I say? So that was that. Once聽again, bookdepository.com if you want to buy聽聽
[766]
any physical books, hardcover, paperback etc聽until December 10th you can use cari10聽聽
[775]
to get a 10% discount on any聽fiction book - please note that it is only聽聽
[782]
fiction books. And I will see you guys next聽time. We're at the end of the year. Happy December聽聽
[788]
by the way, birthday month, Capricorn season, what's up. I will check in with you guys next聽聽
[794]
week. I promise to be less confused and聽less long-winded and yeah that's my review
[802]
of Addie LaRue. So anyway yeah I will聽see you guys next week, thank you for聽聽
[809]
joining me and please let me know your聽thoughts down below! Catch you later! Bye!
