Trump Freaks Out About the Possibility of A Recession: A Closer Look - YouTube

Channel: Late Night with Seth Meyers

[2]
-President Trump has been freaking out about
[3]
the possibility of a recession.
[5]
For more on this, it's time for "A Closer Look."

[11]
If there's one thing Trump loves to brag about,
[13]
it's the stock market.
[14]
He talks about it constantly, and by talks about it,
[16]
I, of course, mean he lies about it
[18]
because he lies about everything.
[20]
I would say lying for him is as natural as breathing,
[24]
but he's not great at breathing either.
[26]
-[ Panting ]
[28]
[ Laughter ]
[30]
-In fact, this week the "Washington Post" published
[32]
an exhaustive study that found that as of August 5th,
[35]
Trump made over 12,000 false or misleading claims as president.
[38]
Which means that Trump said something false about
[40]
once every three hours on average.
[43]
Once every three hours, that means he has to wake up
[45]
in the middle of the night just so he can get his lies in.
[48]
-"Russia's a witch hunt."
[50]
[ Laughter ]
[53]
[ Applause ]
[55]
How does he even keep track?
[57]
He must have like a Fitbit for lies.
[59]
Like a -- like a Fib-bit
[62]
"Oh, no. I need to get my 10,000 lies in.
[64]
I better hold a rally."
[66]
[ Laughter ]
[67]
Trump's apparently told so many lies that if he never told a lie
[69]
ever again in his life he would still have average
[72]
8.7 untrue claims per day over the span of his first term,
[76]
even though, under this imaginary scenario,
[78]
he hasn't said anything untrue in more than a year.
[81]
First of all, let's just bask in that imaginary scenario
[84]
where Trump hasn't said anything untrue in more than a year.
[87]
I mean, imagine what his rallies would be like
[89]
"Folks, people are coming to the border
[91]
and they're seeking asylum, which is perfectly legal.
[95]
And we should welcome them because diversity
[97]
is our strength.
[98]
Also, I'm terrible -- I'm terrible at golf.
[101]
[ Cheers and applause ]
[103]
In fact, Trump gave -- Trump gave a speech on energy
[108]
to workers in Pennsylvania on Tuesday,
[110]
and it was one reporters job
[112]
to basically sum the whole thing up.
[113]
It's what's known in politics as the pool report.
[116]
And here is the actual White House pool report
[118]
summing up Trump's speech.
[120]
"In a 60 minute speech, that at times resembled
[122]
a campaign rally, the President meandered
[124]
through several topics, meaning have little to do with energy.
[127]
He talked about trade, immigration, trucks,
[129]
emoluments, his 2016 victory, union leaders, his poll numbers,
[133]
the media, steel, China, the amount of money he believes
[135]
he's losing as president, the Green New Deal,
[138]
windmills, the WTO screwing us, President Obama's book deal,
[141]
Hillary Clinton's comments on coal workers,
[143]
pipelines and New York, Iran, veterans choice and more.
[146]
Oh, my God.
[147]
That sounded like a months worth of "Jeopardy" categories.
[151]
I'll take windmills for $400.
[154]
The answer, this famous idiot believe they cause cancer.
[157]
[ Laughter ]
[159]
[ Cheers and applause ]
[162]
Oof.
[164]
They cause cancer.
[166]
In fact, one of the lies Trump told at that speech was about
[170]
the various lawsuits against him, including a lawsuit
[172]
alleging that he is violating a section
[174]
of the constitution that specifically prohibits
[176]
what are known as emoluments or gifts
[179]
from foreign governments.
[180]
For example, a Saudi-funded lobbyist paid
[182]
for 500 rooms at Trump's hotel after the 2016 election.
[186]
Does Trump's hotel even have 500 rooms?
[188]
I just assume there was a lobby, and if you went upstairs,
[191]
it was just fake doors painted on the walls.
[194]
Now, that seems like a pretty clear violation
[195]
of the constitution, and yet Trump
[197]
wasn't concerned about that.
[198]
He complained instead about how much
[200]
the lawsuits were supposedly costing him.
[202]
-This thing is costing me a fortune being president.
[205]
Somebody said, oh, he might have rented a room
[208]
to a man from Saudi Arabia for $500.
[212]
What about the $5 billion that I'll lose.
[214]
It will probably cost me, including upside, downside,
[219]
lawyers 'cause everyday they sue me for something.
[223]
These are the most litigious people.
[225]
It's probably costing me from 3 to $5 billion.
[228]
-I don't believe you're losing $3 to $5 billion from lawsuits.
[231]
I would believe you're losing $3 to $5 billion
[234]
just from, you now, like being Donald Trump.
[236]
I mean, you lost $1 billion in ten years,
[239]
and that was in the '80s and '90s,
[240]
when everyone was making money.
[243]
I mean, back then a little kid could open a lemonade stand
[246]
and make enough money to buy a Bugati.
[249]
So Trump lies about everything,
[250]
and the stock market is no exception.
[251]
But if you compare his record to the previous Presidents,
[253]
it's not as impressive.
[255]
In fact, if you look at the change in
[257]
the Dow Jones industrial average over the same period of time,
[259]
Clinton saw 41.4 percent increase,
[262]
Obama saw a 41.7 percent increase,
[264]
and Trump has seen a 30.1 percent increase.
[267]
So, Trump's been outdone by Clinton and Obama,
[269]
the two presidents he hates the most.
[270]
The only way that could be more embarrassing for Trump
[273]
is if he did loose $3 to $5 billion
[275]
and they had to repossess his penthouse
[277]
and rename it Hillary Tower.
[279]
[ Cheers and applause ]
[280]
More importantly --
[283]
more importantly, the stock market is not the whole economy.
[286]
In fact, most working people
[288]
aren't really invested in the stock market.
[290]
It's mostly just a sign at how the wealthy few are fairing.
[293]
In fact, one study found nearly 40 percent of the market
[296]
is owned by the richest one percent of the population
[298]
while bottom 90 percent of the population
[301]
owns just 19% of stock market wealth.
[303]
Basically, for a lot of people the stock market numbers
[305]
in the bottom of the CNN corner are just something
[307]
you staring at while waiting for your flight.
[308]
It's like, "I don't know.
[309]
I guess green is good and red is bad.
[312]
I'm gonna go to the Cinnabon."
[314]
[ Laughter ]
[315]
Trump's economic policy has only benefited
[317]
the elite few to begin with, and that a recession
[319]
seems like it might be on the horizon,
[321]
he's freaking out because for two years he's been able
[324]
to coast on the economic tide left by Obama while ignoring
[327]
the growing wealth gap, massive inequality
[329]
or the shuttering factories in states he promised to rescue.
[332]
In fact, Trump is so desperate for something to brag about
[335]
that during that rambling speech in Pennsylvania
[337]
he touted the Shell plant that was about to open
[340]
and repeatedly claimed credit for it.
[342]
-This would have never happened without me and us,
[345]
this would have never happened.
[347]
It was the Trump administration that made it possible.
[350]
No one else.
[351]
Without us, you would never have been able to do this.
[355]
-There you go.
[356]
The Shell plant would never would have happened
[358]
without Trump. Just one problem.
[359]
Shell announced its plans to build a complex
[361]
in 2012 when President Barack Obama was in office.
[364]
"Oh, it's been three hours.
[366]
Better check my fib-bit."
[367]
[ Laughter ]
[369]
I mean, he's taking credit for a plant
[371]
that was announced when Obama was in office.
[373]
What's next?
[374]
"Do you know I killed Osama bin Laden?
[375]
I swear it's true. I have --
[377]
I have a very real photo to prove it."
[380]
[ Laughter ]
[383]
Trump is freaking out about the possibility
[385]
of a recession after spending 2 1/2 years
[388]
catering the wealthy elite.
[389]
He doesn't care about growing inequality
[390]
or shuttering factories.
[392]
We've got a lot of problems, and in many cases...
[394]
-It was the Trump administration
[396]
that made it possible.
[398]
-This has been "A Closer Look."
