The Best CD Rates of 2022! (Rates Are Finally Up) - YouTube

Channel: Honest Finance

[0]
Interest rates have finally started to go back聽 up for savings accounts and it's also happening聽聽
[4]
for cd accounts as well so i did quite a bit of聽 research and i found the top cd accounts out there聽聽
[10]
that you can park your money in and that's exactly聽 what we're going to be going over in this video聽聽
[14]
now i am going to start by talking about some聽 of the pros and cons with having a cd account聽聽
[19]
so if you already know everything about them聽 and you know about early withdrawal penalties聽聽
[23]
and everything like that then go ahead and just聽 skip forward in this video because i will leave聽聽
[28]
chapters that way you can just get right to the聽 bank accounts that you're looking for but we are聽聽
[33]
going to talk about cd accounts first here okay聽 so if you're wondering what a cd account is it's聽聽
[38]
called a certificate of deposit and most banks聽 offer these types of accounts and basically it's聽聽
[43]
just an easy way that you can lock up a certain聽 amount of money for a certain amount of time at a聽聽
[48]
fixed interest rate that's generally a lot higher聽 than what you can get in just your savings account聽聽
[53]
because you're keeping it locked up so for聽 instance you could set up a cd account for聽聽
[57]
two years with ten thousand dollars and let's聽 say you get a two percent interest rate well聽聽
[62]
that two percent is going to accumulate for that聽 entire two years so at the end of the term you're聽聽
[67]
going to get that ten thousand dollars back plus聽 the interest that you made for the two percent聽聽
[72]
and it's all risk-free because it's fdic insured聽 through your bank you're never going to beat the聽聽
[77]
average return of the stock market with a simple聽 cd account but they are nice to have if you're聽聽
[82]
saving up for something big like maybe a house or聽 a car and you don't want to risk that money in the聽聽
[88]
stock market because you're planning on using it聽 within the next few years and that's where a cd聽聽
[93]
account can come in very handy now you also need聽 to understand that when you set up a cd account聽聽
[98]
you can't add money to the account and you can't聽 withdraw money from the account without a penalty聽聽
[104]
so you really want to set aside only a certain聽 amount of money that you're not going to need聽聽
[108]
and for a certain amount of time that doesn't聽 feel like it's too far into the future and if聽聽
[113]
you do end up needing to withdraw money from the聽 cd account you can't take out partial withdrawals聽聽
[119]
you have to take out the entire amount so if you聽 put in ten thousand dollars into the cd account聽聽
[124]
and you only needed a thousand bucks you can't do聽 that you've got to take out the entire 10 000 or聽聽
[130]
leave it in for the entire period now if you do聽 have to withdraw your money early you are gonna聽聽
[135]
have to pay a penalty fee but it's not the end聽 of the world because most banks will charge you聽聽
[140]
about 90 days worth of interest for closing out聽 the account within a year and then anything from聽聽
[145]
about a year all the way up to five years is 180聽 days worth of interest now obviously you are gonna聽聽
[151]
have to check your own terms for the specific聽 bank that you've signed up for a cd account with聽聽
[156]
because they are going to have different rules聽 but generally that's about what you're looking at聽聽
[160]
if you have to make an early withdrawal and聽 if interest rates are on the rise like they聽聽
[164]
are right now then i probably wouldn't聽 lock my money up for five years anyway聽聽
[169]
i would just do a two-year term that way in two聽 years interest rates might be a lot better and in聽聽
[174]
that case you could then reset up a new cd account聽 with a higher interest rate that way you're not聽聽
[180]
locked in at a lower rate for that long period of聽 time rates also fluctuate quite a bit so whenever聽聽
[186]
you're ready to sign up for a cd account make sure聽 that you do your own research because even though聽聽
[191]
the information is accurate right now as of the聽 posting date of this video it is going to change聽聽
[196]
quite a bit so if you're watching this聽 video in six months or a year from now聽聽
[200]
do your own research because a lot of聽 those numbers have probably shifted by then聽聽
[204]
now i'll start talking about the top cd accounts聽 that i found and the first one goes to marcus聽聽
[209]
by goldman sachs and this one specifically i聽 want to talk about their two-year cd account聽聽
[215]
because this one is extremely competitive because聽 it's only two years long and it currently pays an聽聽
[220]
interest rate of two percent and you only need a聽 minimum account balance of five hundred dollars to聽聽
[226]
get it set up marcus has a lot of cd accounts to聽 choose from starting really low at only six months聽聽
[231]
and then they go all the way up to six years with聽 their highest interest rate right now paying out聽聽
[236]
two point five five percent on the six six-year聽 term so overall i feel like they have a very good聽聽
[242]
variety of cd accounts to choose from and their聽 rates are extremely competitive but specifically聽聽
[248]
that two-year product that one is really really聽 good all of their accounts only require a 500聽聽
[254]
minimum balance so it's really easy to聽 get started with any of the accounts聽聽
[258]
and then on top of that once you set up an account聽 you have 30 days to contribute more money to the聽聽
[264]
cd account before it's actually locked and that's聽 really cool because a lot of other banks don't聽聽
[269]
offer that feature so overall i feel like marcus聽 has a really good variety of cd accounts to choose聽聽
[275]
from that are extremely competitive and then on聽 top of that the minimum balance really isn't that聽聽
[280]
hard to meet with just 500 bucks now if you easily聽 want to compare different cd rates then definitely聽聽
[285]
check out bankrate.com i've got an affiliate link聽 for them in the description below so check them聽聽
[291]
out if you have an interest because you can sift聽 through different banks and different cd rates and聽聽
[296]
find the one that's going to be best for you okay聽 the next rate that i found goes to synchrony bank聽聽
[301]
and the reason these guys made my list is because聽 they have a special offer right now and honestly聽聽
[306]
i'm not sure when it expires but they are offering聽 a 16-month cd rate at 1.85 percent which is really聽聽
[313]
good considering you're only locking up the money聽 for 16 months rather than 24 months at marcus at 2聽聽
[320]
so right now that is a very very good offer and聽 on top of that synchrony's minimum balance is聽聽
[326]
zero so it is very easy to get into any of聽 their cv accounts and honestly with all the聽聽
[331]
research i've done when you're looking at a 16聽 month cd account at 1.85 percent that's pretty聽聽
[338]
much as good as you can get for a short-term cd聽 account their cds start at three months and then聽聽
[343]
they go all the way up to five years but based聽 on my research their one to two year range is聽聽
[348]
kind of their sweet spot but obviously rates do聽 fluctuate so you'll want to do your own research聽聽
[353]
and make your own decision there synchrony also聽 offers a 24-month bump up cd where you'll start聽聽
[358]
at a lower rate at 1.4 percent but during the聽 term you're allowed to ask for one increase so聽聽
[364]
if rates happen to go up then that could be a good聽 thing based on if they go up quite a bit or not聽聽
[370]
so overall i feel like synchrony bank has quite聽 a few cd options that are worth considering聽聽
[375]
so definitely check them out when you're聽 doing your research next on my list goes聽聽
[378]
to capital one because they're a very large bank聽 and because a lot of people already bank with them聽聽
[384]
it makes getting a cd a lot easier because you can聽 just have it in one place with who you're already聽聽
[389]
banking with for a one year term with capital聽 one you're currently looking at point two five聽聽
[393]
percent and then you're looking at one point聽 seven percent for a two year and two point two聽聽
[399]
five percent for a five year so overall they're聽 not the most competitive but because they're a聽聽
[403]
big bank sometimes it's worth giving up a little聽 bit of interest if you're already banking with聽聽
[408]
them and they also require a zero minimum balance聽 so obviously it makes it very easy to get into any聽聽
[414]
of their cd accounts and then one feature that聽 really stood out with capital one is they give聽聽
[418]
you the option of how your interest is paid out so聽 you can get paid out your interest monthly yearly聽聽
[424]
or at the end of the term like everyone else so聽 if you do choose to be paid out monthly you will聽聽
[429]
lose a little bit in compound interest but this聽 is a feature that i've never seen with other cd聽聽
[434]
accounts so if you do want to get paid monthly you聽 can with capital one now if you're simply looking聽聽
[439]
for the highest cd rate that's out there the聽 bank that i found with the highest rate goes to聽聽
[444]
first national bank of america with a five-year cd聽 account that's paying out 2.8 percent in interest聽聽
[451]
but you do have to have a thousand dollar minimum聽 balance to get started which isn't the end of聽聽
[455]
the world but that's the highest rate that i聽 found for all of the banks out there right now聽聽
[460]
so obviously there's a lot of pros and cons聽 when it comes to the different banks out there聽聽
[464]
that offer cd accounts but really what it comes聽 down to is you just need to do your own research聽聽
[469]
and find out which one is specifically聽 going to be best for you and your money
