How to Bond with your Hamster - YouTube

Channel: Victoria Raechel

[1]
one of the biggest questions I see is how do I聽bond with my hamster
[6]
or how do I get my hamster to like me?
[9]
now if you're coming onto this video聽expecting a solid answer
[14]
that is going to tell you how to bond with your hamster in one day
[19]
you聽are sadly in the wrong place
[22]
there are no magical or secret tips I'm going to share today
[26]
first聽things first you cannot compare your hamster to somebody else's hamster
[32]
we often will see videos聽on YouTube, Instagram, Tik Tok of these hamsters sitting in their owner's hands letting them pet聽 them
[40]
or they fall asleep on their lap or they even come when called and you're like
[45]
I want my聽hamster to do exactly what that hamster is doing
[50]
that's just not likely to happen
[52]
animals are聽all individuals so they're all going to have different personalities
[58]
and your hamster is聽likely not going to behave the same way another hamster is going to behave with their owner
[67]
another thing i want to touch on is "heart pets"
[69]
and "heart pets" are essentially a pet that you聽 bring home and almost instantly you have this
[76]
special bond and connection with them that is on a聽 whole nother level it's like they're your soulmate聽pet
[83]
and you've just never had this type of bond聽 with any other pet
[87]
this can of course can happen with multiple pets that you have but it usually聽 doesn't happen with every single pet you own聽聽
[96]
when bonding with a new hamster the first thing聽 I'm always going to recommend
[101]
is letting them settle in
[103]
the amount of days you wait to let聽them settle in, is really going to depend on a bunch of different factors
[110]
that is depending on聽is the hamster already seeming comfortable with you?
[114]
have they already been in a home where they've聽been interacting with humans?
[119]
do they seem really skittish or timid? have they had any traumatic聽pasts? or have they come from a pet store where聽聽
[125]
they were never handled by any other humans?
[129]
a hamster who was previously in a home with a family and they're used to humans likely is聽only going to need a day or two to settle in聽聽
[139]
whereas a hamster who is super skittish or had聽 something traumatic happen in their life may need聽聽
[145]
a little bit longer time to settle in
[148]
the reason聽we want them to settle in is because a pet that is acclimated to their environment is going聽 to be much easier to bond with
[157]
than a pet who has just gone to a new environment and is super聽overwhelmed
[162]
this can cause different reactions
[164]
like the animal may be so overwhelmed that they聽 try to bite you or they're just hiding away聽聽
[171]
the next tip kind of goes along with letting them聽 settle in and it is just getting them used to聽聽
[179]
yourself, the way that you sound, the movements that聽 you make and your smell
[186]
hamsters have really great sense of smell so you could just take a little聽 bit of toilet paper rub it on your hands put it聽聽
[193]
in the enclosure and that is just going to help聽 them get used to your scent and it's not going聽聽
[198]
to be something new and scary when you go to put聽 your hand in to the enclosure
[203]
you can also sit in the room the enclosure is in or sit right next to聽 the enclosure and just do some normal things like聽聽
[212]
if you read books go ahead and sit and read a book聽 you can even read it out loud in a gentle voice so聽聽
[217]
that they start to recognize and get used to your聽 voice or you can do
[223]
some stuff on the computer or do some homework just something that is going聽to involve
[229]
you having to sit next to the enclosure so your presence is there
[234]
one of the best tips聽I can offer is create a routine with your hamster
[239]
structure is really important in any pet's life聽 and when you're creating a routine with your聽hamster
[246]
say you are going in and feeding them聽 at the same time, every day or you're going in聽聽
[251]
and changing their water or spot cleaning or doing聽 something that involves their care
[258]
your hamster is going to start to learn this routine
[262]
they may聽realize that you come in at a certain time to feed them so they may even start to be awake a little聽bit earlier
[270]
to wait for you to come in and bring that food or bring them a treat
[275]
the next tip i聽have is kind of going to depend on the hamster and whether or not they are already comfortable聽coming into your hand
[284]
if they don't want to go onto your hand just quite yet
[288]
highly would聽recommend practicing lifting them out of the enclosure with a mug or a measuring cup
[295]
you can聽put a treat into there and just hold it below and allow them to climb in and then slowly lift them聽out of the enclosure
[303]
and then just put them right back in let them climb out
[307]
this is going to get聽your hamster used to that feeling of being lifted
[311]
because they naturally aren't animals that are聽 going to often leave the ground
[317]
and the only reason in the wild a hamster is leaving the ground聽 is usually because they are another animal's聽meal
[325]
once your hamster has gotten used to聽 being lifted from the mug, measuring cup or聽聽
[330]
even climbing onto your hand they're going to聽 start associating this as a positive experience聽聽
[336]
because this is when they get to leave their聽enclosure
[339]
they're realizing that hey this is the only way that i am able to come out
[345]
and so they're聽going to want to willingly go onto your hand or climb into that mug so that they're聽able to go somewhere else to explore聽聽
[354]
a great bonding tool can be snuggle sacks or kind聽 of fabric pouches like the hoodie pockets or if聽聽
[363]
you even wear your sweater backwards and have the聽 hood at the front
[368]
these can make really great just tools for bonding with your hamster if you want聽 to sit with them somewhere you have kind of like a聽聽
[376]
safe pocket for them to sit in and feel聽 comfortable it's going to be dark and soft聽聽
[383]
and it's not going to be too open so that they're not聽 going to be kind of too intimidated by the space聽聽
[389]
now some hamsters like snuggle pouches and some聽 hamsters don't so this is just going to depend聽聽
[395]
on your hamster but they can be a very helpful聽 tool if you just want to take your hamster out聽聽
[401]
to sit with you
[403]
the next tip is one you've聽probably already heard about and that is bathtub bonding or free roam
[410]
bonding I'm going to聽call it
[411]
this is basically just when you sit in an area that is hamster safe
[416]
and this allows the聽hamster to be able to explore but also come up and climb onto you
[423]
and kind of explore you, climb聽on your legs, climb on your arms, stomach whatever
[428]
and get used to you not being a scary thing聽but rather just something that they don't need to be scared of
[436]
it is important to note聽 that not every hamster is going to enjoy
[440]
bath to bonding or coming out into a open space聽 it might be too much for a hamster
[447]
some hamsters may start showing some erratic behaviors while in聽the bathtub or free roam
[453]
and if you're noticing these things it's best to bring them back to their聽enclosure
[458]
the next tip is treats this is going to be probably one of the best
[462]
bonding tools that you聽can use
[465]
if you have a picky hamster
[468]
I am so sorry it is going to be a lot harder to try and bond聽 with them, if they are not willing
[474]
or wanting to take food or treats from you but if your hamster聽 is willing to take food and treats from you
[478]
but if your hamster is willing to take food and treats from you
[482]
this is going to be super-duper helpful in bonding聽with them because
[487]
feeding your hamster a treat is going to help them recognize you as the bringer聽of food which is a positive thing not a negative thing
[498]
you don't necessarily need to use treats聽to give your hamster every time
[502]
obviously, when you're bonding with your hamster you're likely to聽give more treats during this time because you want to continue to reward them
[510]
and that can start to聽get a little bit too much you obviously treats are meant to be treats, not
[517]
full-time meals
[519]
so instead聽you actually can just use really healthy things like you can try dried vegetables
[525]
or fresh聽vegetables that are cut into really tiny sections
[530]
or you can just use your hamsters聽regular seed mix
[534]
as a treat
[535]
this way you can give as much as you want and not have聽 to worry about your hamster getting sick or gaining any weight
[544]
and the last tip that I聽can give is just have time and patience with them
[550]
like I mentioned earlier you're not going to be聽 able to create an instant bond with your hamster the first day you get them or if you do that is
[559]
a rare occurrence
[561]
it's going to take days, weeks, months sometimes even years to get a really good聽bond with your hamster
[570]
and you have to keep at it. Definitely don't give up if you don't interact聽with your hamster for long periods of time then they're likely to not bond with you as well
[582]
just a聽quick editor's note if you are noticing that your hamster isn't making any improvements with bonding
[587]
it is quite possible that you have a ghost hamster
[590]
I have a full complete video about ghost聽hamsters here that you can check out
[595]
so i hope this video was helpful and i聽 will see you guys in my next video bye
