in this video I'm reviewing the eargasm
[1]
high fidelity filtered earplugs coming
[5]
up

[10]
hi guys cliff olson doctor of Audiology
[13]
and founder of applied hearing solutions
[15]
in anthem Arizona and on this channel I
[17]
cover a bunch of hearing related
[18]
information to help make you a better
[19]
informed consumer so if you're into that
[21]
make sure you hit that subscribe button
[22]
and don't forget to click the bell to
[24]

[26]
a new video maximum amounts of hearing
[29]
protection are awesome and highly
[30]
advised if you find yourself in noisy
[32]
situations particularly if you want to
[34]
prevent against hearing loss and
[36]
tinnitus but sometimes using foam
[38]
hearing protectors and ear muffs provide
[41]
way too much attenuation particularly if
[43]
you're trying to appreciate the sound of
[45]
music and if you're trying to have
[47]
conversations with friends in a noisy
[49]
environment in these particular cases
[51]
using a filtered ear plug may make more
[54]
sense that's why I decided to check out
[56]
the eargasm high fidelity filtered ear
[58]
plugs for this video review eargasm is a
[60]
company that uses its name that is an
[63]
obviously clever play on words to market
[65]
its flat attenuation hearing protectors
[67]
you may have seen them on Facebook where
[69]
they do a ton of advertising they have a
[72]
variety of different ear plug options
[74]
from their high fidelity ear plugs to
[76]
their gay pride addition to a smaller
[78]
version of their high fidelity ear plugs
[80]
and even a transparent version of their
[82]
ear plugs that use a clear filter
[84]
instead of their signature blue filter
[86]
each have a noise reduction rating or
[89]
nrr of 16 when worn properly the higher
[92]
the nrr rating the more they attenuate
[95]
or reduce sound and the more hearing
[97]
protection they provide unlike earmuffs
[99]
and foam hearing protectors that provide
[100]
an NRR value between 24 and 31 filtered
[104]
ear plugs provide a even level of
[106]
attenuation to keep things sounding
[108]
natural just not as loud imagine that
[111]
you're listening to music inside of your
[112]
car now most car radios have the ability
[115]
to adjust the treble and the bass now
[117]
imagine that you actually turn the
[119]
treble all the way down and leave the
[121]
bass up this is going to provide you
[123]
with a very unnatural experience when
[125]
listening to music well this is
[127]
essentially what you're doing when
[128]
you're using a set of foam ear plugs or
[130]
ear muffs it doesn't attenuate all of
[133]
this
[133]
down evenly it takes down the high
[135]
frequencies more than it takes down the
[137]
low frequencies but when you use a
[139]
filtered ear plug what it does is that
[141]
attenuates all of the different
[143]
frequencies as evenly as possible so the
[146]
sound of the music is just lower but you
[149]
get the same amount of fidelity this is
[151]
the attenuation profile of the eargasm
[153]
filtered ear plugs you can see that
[155]
these filtered plugs reduced volume
[157]
between 25 and 35 decibels at each
[160]
frequency tested from 125 Hertz up to
[163]
8,000 Hertz now they don't indicate at
[166]
this scale is in DB SPL or DB HL which
[170]
would indicate sound pressure level
[171]
versus hearing level but clearly it
[173]
would have to be in DB HL otherwise it
[176]
would not provide perceived flat level
[178]
of attenuation filtered earplugs also
[181]
allow you to understand conversational
[182]
speech better when you're in a noisy
[184]
environment the last time that I went to
[185]
Nashville and anyone who's been to
[187]
Nashville knows that any time that you
[189]
go out there's going to be a live band
[190]
performing wherever you go and when I
[193]
was in those particular environments I
[195]
could still understand the conversation
[197]
of my friends while the band was playing
[199]
their music extremely loud if I were to
[201]
take the plugs out of my ears it was
[203]
more difficult for me to understand my
[205]
friends and things were just way too
[206]
loud I also wore eargasm earplugs when I
[209]
went to my friend's wedding on New
[211]
Year's Eve it was an insanely loud
[213]
wedding a bunch of music that was being
[216]
played constantly through dinner and
[218]
through the reception it was a terrific
[220]
time but if I didn't have my filtered
[222]
earplugs in I would have definitely left
[224]
that particular venue with ringing in my
[227]
ears and a reduced perception of hearing
[229]
sensitivity but because I was wearing
[232]
the ear Goss and filtered earplugs I
[233]
could hear everything that was being
[235]
said to me I could have really
[237]
high-quality conversation but I didn't
[239]
leave feeling like I had a hearing loss
[241]
now their website has a really cool
[243]
feature that allows you to simulate the
[245]
difference that their ear plugs make as
[247]
I switch between no earplugs eargasm
[250]
filtered earplugs and standard foam
[252]
earplugs you can clearly hear the
[254]
differences let me play a few sound
[257]
samples first at a concert then at a
[259]
restaurant
[260]
[Music]
[264]
[Applause]
[267]
[Music]
[278]
[Music]
[289]
[Applause]
[294]
you
[302]
really okay now if you ask me I think
[321]
that those sound samples provide a
[323]
really clear understanding of what it's
[325]
like to use a filter to ear plug versus
[327]
using a foam earplugs or no ear plugs at
[330]
all that being said I feel like that is
[332]
representative of what my experience is
[334]
then when using these plugs the eargasm
[336]
plugs are reasonably comfortable and
[338]
they do a good job of attenuating sound
[340]
even in loud environments assuming you
[342]
get them in your ears correctly which
[344]
leads me to the first thing that I am
[346]
NOT crazy about when it comes to the
[348]
eargasm filtered ear plugs and that is
[350]
is that they are huge they are way too
[352]
big for the standard ear canal now I
[354]
have a larger than normal ear canal and
[356]
I could not use the regular-sized
[359]
eargasm filtered ear plugs
[360]
fortunately they actually have a smaller
[362]
size of these as well which actually fit
[364]
my ears much better now let me show you
[367]
the difference in sizes between these
[369]
two so the one in my right hand with the
[373]
little blue filter in it still is the
[375]
regular size one and in my left hand is
[378]
the smaller size the smaller size fits
[381]
my ear much better now I'm going to show
[383]
you what they look like when you put
[385]
them in so I'm gonna try to put the
[387]
right one in as far as I can the
[390]
regular-sized one so that's about as far
[393]
as I can get it inside of my ear and
[395]
then I'm gonna put the smaller one
[397]
inside of my left ear so I can actually
[401]
show you a comparison of what it looks
[403]
like and what it should look like so my
[405]
right ear this is the regular size
[408]
orgasm filtered plug and on my other ear
[411]
this is the smaller version of it and
[415]
this is correct this is incorrect if
[419]
this is how it fits inside of your ear
[421]
it is way too big and is not going to be
[423]
attenuating the right amount of sound
[425]
and you are still at risk for damaging
[427]
your hearing if it goes into your ear
[428]
like this then you know that you have a
[430]
good fit you
[432]
can clearly see this as an issue even
[434]
for the models that they have on their
[435]
homepage now I do understand that when
[438]
properly inserted you can't really see
[440]
them but if this is how these earplugs
[442]
look inside of your ear canal you have
[444]
way too large of an ear plug and it will
[446]
not provide you with the advertised
[448]
level of hearing protection the second
[450]
thing that I'm not crazy about is that
[452]
there's only one level of attenuation
[453]
when you use the eargasm filter -
[455]
earplugs there are other companies out
[457]
there that provide you with a varying
[459]
level of flat attenuation anything from
[461]
16 decibels of flat attenuation to 20 or
[464]
even 25 decibels of flat attenuation so
[467]
depending on the environment that you
[469]
find yourself in and the amount of
[470]
protection that you need in that
[472]
environment you can pick out the correct
[474]
level of attenuation you can't do that
[476]
with the eargasm filtered plunks that
[479]
being said as long as you can wear the
[480]
ear gasm high fidelity filtered earplugs
[482]
correctly you should be able to protect
[484]
against hearing loss and tinnitus while
[486]
still being able to appreciate music and
[488]
talk to your friends that's it for this
