[2]
in most states once you are beyond the
[4]
first six months on medicare part b you
[7]
usually have to answer a list of health
[9]
questions and provide a list of your
[11]
medications on a medicare supplement
[14]
also known as medigap application then
[16]
that application is sent to an
[18]
underwriter at the insurance company who
[20]
determines whether or not you are
[22]
eligible to purchase
[24]
a new medicare supplement this can be a
[27]
nerve-wracking experience but it doesn't
[29]
have to be in this video we'll go
[32]
through what kinds of questions are
[34]
asked on medicare supplement
[35]
applications which medical conditions
[38]
are likely to result in a denial which
[40]
medical conditions are not a problem for
[42]
medicare supplement underwriting and the
[44]
situations when you don't have to go
[46]
through underwriting at all in order to
[49]
purchase a medigap policy hi i'm tabitha

[58]
medicare content every week your first
[61]
six months on medicare part b are your
[64]
medicare supplement open enrollment
[66]
period during that time you are able to
[69]
purchase any medigap policy sold in your
[72]
state without having to answer any
[74]
health questions or provide a list of
[77]
your medications so the first question
[79]
is why would you be purchasing a
[81]
medicare supplement once you are beyond
[84]
your first six months on medicare part b
[86]
there are many reasons why this happens
[88]
people successfully get through
[90]
underwriting to purchase new medicare
[92]
supplement policies all the time if
[95]
you've had a medigap policy for a few
[97]
years and the rates have gone up you may
[99]
be purchasing a new medigap policy in
[101]
order to keep the same level of coverage
[104]
but
[105]
have a new lower monthly premium or you
[108]
might decide to change your medicare
[110]
supplement coverage from a plan f to a
[112]
plan g or from a high deductible plan g
[115]
to a plan n just to give a few examples
[118]
or you may have been in a medicare
[119]
advantage plan and switched back to
[121]
original medicare parts a and b and want
[123]
to add medigap coverage what kinds of
[126]
questions are asked on the application
[129]
every insurance company has slightly
[131]
different health questions this is to
[133]
your advantage when working with a
[135]
medicare plan broker your broker can
[137]
compare questions from several different
[139]
companies to find the one most likely to
[141]
accept your application the health
[143]
questions are usually very
[145]
straightforward the notes and
[147]
instructions on the application tell you
[149]
if your medical condition will result in
[151]
your application being declined if
[154]
that's the case you know before even
[156]
completing the application that applying
[158]
to that particular company would be a
[160]
waste of time with some health
[162]
conditions the medicare supplement
[164]
company will consider your application
[166]
but it does have to be sent to an
[167]
underwriter who may call you or your
[170]
medical providers for more information
[173]
in deciding whether or not to accept
[175]
your application what medical conditions
[177]
lead to an application being declined as
[179]
mentioned earlier every insurance
[181]
company has slightly different
[182]
applications but in general the
[185]
following conditions are likely to cause
[187]
an application to be declined number one
[190]
necessary medical treatment that has not
[192]
been performed yet this is a knockout
[195]
question for most companies if your
[197]
doctor has told you that you need
[198]
surgery testing or treatment that hasn't
[202]
been done yet finish your testing and
[204]
treatment before applying for a medigap
[207]
policy number two currently hospitalized
[210]
confined to a bed in a nursing facility
[212]
or assisted living or receiving home
[214]
health care if you fall into any of
[216]
these categories you will most likely be
[218]
declined if your situation is temporary
[221]
you may be able to pass underwriting
[223]
once all treatment is done and you are
[225]
completely recovered number three
[227]
currently being treated for internal
[230]
cancer usually insurance companies will
[232]
decline your application until you have
[234]
been cancer free for two years there is
[236]
some variation depending on the type of
[239]
cancer from one company to another
[241]
number four recent medication changes
[245]
these may or may not be a problem
[246]
depending on the insurance company and
[248]
the medication if your medications have
[250]
been the same for more than two years
[252]
you shouldn't have a problem however if
[254]
your medical condition is not under
[256]
control and your doctor is still trying
[258]
to find the medications that will work
[260]
for you that may lead to a decline
[263]
number five serious chronic health
[266]
conditions again each company varies
[268]
slightly but if you have any of the
[270]
following you are unlikely to be able to
[272]
pass underwriting for a medicare
[274]
supplement policy rheumatoid arthritis
[277]
insulin dependent diabetes with cardiac
[279]
complications
[280]
ms aids osteoporosis with fractures copd
[285]
and other severe lung disorders dementia
[288]
parkinson's disease als
[291]
serious heart problems heart attack
[293]
stroke tia
[295]
stent placement valve replacement
[298]
pacemaker congestive heart failure
[300]
kidney failure and organ transplants
[303]
other than corneal transplants which
[306]
medical conditions are generally not a
[307]
problem for medicare supplement
[309]
underwriting number one high blood
[311]
pressure and cholesterol unless these
[314]
conditions are severe and require far
[317]
more than the usual medication to
[319]
control they aren't a problem for
[321]
passing medicare supplement underwriting
[323]
number two
[324]
osteoarthritis while rheumatoid
[326]
arthritis is a declinable condition
[328]
osteoarthritis is not number three bmi
[332]
medigap applications do usually ask for
[335]
your height and weight but underwriting
[338]
is pretty lenient as long as you are not
[340]
seriously obese a high bmi on its own
[344]
will not cause your application to be
[346]
declined number four type 2 diabetes not
[349]
requiring insulin if you are taking
[351]
medication for type 2 diabetes but don't
[354]
need insulin and don't have any cardiac
[355]
complications you can pass underwriting
[358]
for a medicare supplement number five
[360]
mental health medications
[362]
if you take prescriptions for anxiety or
[365]
depression you can pass underwriting
[367]
provided you have not needed inpatient
[370]
mental health care number six some types
[373]
of cancer if you have certain types of
[375]
cancer you can be approved for coverage
[377]
with some medigap insurers this varies
[380]
from one company to another so ask a
[383]
broker to research options for you if
[385]
you find yourself in this situation
[387]
underwriter phone calls and medical
[390]
records checks as part of the
[392]
underwriting process your underwriter
[394]
may call you to confirm the answers that
[396]
you gave on your application it's
[398]
important to both fill out the
[399]
application honestly and respond to
[402]
underwriter questions accurately and
[404]
honestly on the application you agree to
[407]
give underwriters access to your medical
[409]
records so any discrepancies will be
[412]
easily discovered the underwriter is
[415]
only allowed to ask the same questions
[418]
that were asked on the application keep
[420]
responses simple and short
[423]
sometimes medicare supplement applicants
[425]
say far too much on underwriter phone
[428]
calls and end up being declined based on
[430]
information they gave that the
[432]
underwriter didn't request once my
[435]
application is in underwriting can i
[436]
assume i'm approved no do not assume
[440]
that your medicare supplement
[441]
application has been approved until you
[443]
receive
[444]
written confirmation of that
[446]
underwriting can take up to three weeks
[448]
during that time do not cancel your
[450]
current coverage just in case your
[453]
application is eventually declined if
[455]
you are approved you will receive your
[458]
policy or id number and a copy of your
[462]
policy either electronically or in paper
[464]
form once you have that it's safe to
[467]
cancel your other coverage if you are
[469]
replacing a different medicare
[470]
supplement your old policy will not be
[473]
automatically cancelled you need to
[475]
contact your old insurance company and
[477]
request the cancellation what if my
[480]
application is declined that's not the
[482]
end of your options every company
[484]
handles underwriting differently there
[486]
may be another medigap company that will
[489]
accept you when someone is declined the
[491]
underwriter can tell that person what
[494]
issue caused the application to be
[496]
declined and then your broker can look
[498]
for a medigap company that may be more
[500]
accepting of whatever condition caused
[503]
your application to be declined in some
[505]
areas there are also guaranteed issue
[508]
medicare supplement companies that
[510]
accept everyone who is age 65 or older
[513]
and has medicare parts a and b
[516]
another option is to keep your current
[517]
coverage until the annual enrollment
[519]
period begins in october and then look
[522]
at medicare advantage plans available in
[525]
your zip code are there times when you
[527]
can switch medicare supplements without
[529]
having to answer health questions yes
[532]
there are guaranteed issue situations
[534]
when you can purchase a medigap policy
[537]
without having to answer any health
[539]
questions or providing a list of your
[540]
medications examples of guaranteed issue
[543]
situations include
[545]
leaving an employer group health plan
[548]
moving away from the service area of
[550]
your medicare select or medicare
[552]
advantage plan or if you tried a
[554]
medicare advantage plan for the first
[556]
time and chose to return to original
[558]
medicare within the first 12 months
[561]
there are also state-specific laws that
[563]
allow bypassing underwriting for example
[565]
in washington state you can switch from
[567]
a medigap plan a to another medigap plan
[570]
a or from a medigap plan letter b
[574]
through n to another medigap plan
[577]
lettered b through n at any time
[580]
without having to answer health
[581]
questions or provide a medication list
[584]
going through medigap underwriting can
[586]
be stressful it is much easier and more
[590]
likely to succeed in you being approved
[592]
for new coverage when you have a
[594]
knowledgeable experienced broker on your
[597]
side who knows the underwriting
[599]
differences between companies and can
[601]
help you find a plan that fits your
[603]
needs and budget and is most likely to
[606]
accept your application if you have
[608]
questions about your medicare supplement
