Channel: Chargent

[0]
you might have heard the term聽 tokenization thrown around and聽聽
[2]
you're curious what exactly does that聽 mean well you come to the right place聽聽
[5]
we're gonna cover this in business terms聽 that all of us can understand let's dig in
[9]
first off it's important to understand the聽 tokenization is an industry standard and聽聽
[17]
it's more or less required by the pci-dss for聽 all organizations that take credit cards now聽聽
[23]
that's not to say that it's impossible to be PCI聽 compliant without using tokenization however it聽聽
[29]
does become much more challenging tokenization聽 is a technology that was developed industry-wide聽聽
[35]
to ensure the cardholder data is kept secure this聽 is accomplished by the receiver of the cardholder聽聽
[40]
data assigning a random string of characters聽 and returning that string to the provider of聽聽
[45]
the cardholder data okay I promise we talked聽 about this and simple business terms let me聽聽
[51]
try that again and short us merchants we give the聽 credit card number through encryption to a trusted聽聽
[58]
partner most likely your payment gateway the聽 payment gateway will in turn give you a reference聽聽
[63]
that represents that credit card in their聽 system but just for you now a token it cannot聽聽
[70]
be deciphered because it wasn't encrypted instead聽 this is a random string that's assigned to that聽聽
[76]
credit card number that you the merchant gave that聽 gateway I guess this probably makes sense for most聽聽
[81]
of us however I've come up with a kind of simple聽 analogy that I think paints the picture pretty聽聽
[86]
well and it also helps us understand how the聽 system is secure ok let's say that you go to Las聽聽
[92]
Vegas to play blackjack and let's also say that聽 you start off the MGM Grand or you sit down at the聽聽
[97]
table you hand them $100 and they hand you back聽 $25 tokens and while you're in the MGM Grand those聽聽
[104]
tokens are essentially as good as cash money now聽 let's say that you want a hundred bucks from them聽聽
[108]
then you walk across the street to go to New York聽 New York now you may know that New York New York聽聽
[113]
is actually owned by MGM however your tokens from聽 the MGM Grand are not gonna work with the New York聽聽
[119]
New York they're only currency at the MGM Grand if聽 you were to put them on the table at New York New聽聽
[124]
York you'd be told that you can't play with them聽 they're just no good there so I believe that this聽聽
[129]
is a solid analogy for the payments industry聽 and how we work with tokens a token that you聽聽
[135]
get from your payment gateway is only good when聽 you the merchants are signed in to that payment聽聽
[141]
gateway the tokenize card data might be able to be聽 shared across multiple meds and that does happen聽聽
[147]
from time to time and something you should talk to聽 your payment gateway about if if that's something聽聽
[151]
you need but this is a big part of what makes this聽 system so secure because of a disgruntled employee聽聽
[156]
or some other sort of attacker manages to get聽 their hands on these tokens there have no use聽聽
[161]
to them even if this would-be attacker somehow聽 also got your credentials and got signed in to聽聽
[166]
your gateway account they still would be unable to聽 use those tokens to get any money as those tokens聽聽
[172]
are tied through your merchants ID to your bank聽 account even if this attacker did try to charge聽聽
[177]
something against the token the money would be聽 in your bank account fully within your control聽聽
[182]
for you to reverse if you wanted to dive deeper聽 into the technical details there's many other聽聽
[187]
videos here on YouTube that will explain that聽 in whatever detail you want to understand I'm聽聽
[193]
hopeful that this video helps some of us business聽 users better understand the value and that tokens聽聽
[198]
can bring to our businesses and why we should聽 all be using them it's worth noting that there's聽聽
[203]
sometimes a cost that your gateway is going to聽 tack on to tokenize that cardholder data for you聽聽
[207]
and it's also noteworthy that most gateways now聽 will also tokenize bank account data for all of聽聽
[213]
us so both cards and accounts can be tokenized聽 and the value I feel like it's easy to see if聽聽
[219]
you're not storing Christopher's credit card聽 numbers then you couldn't be at fault if they聽聽
[225]
end up in the wrong hands at charging we recommend聽 that all of our customers tokenize all of their聽聽
[230]
card data that they use throughout their entire聽 organization to facilitate this we have developed聽聽
[235]
our API our payment console and our payment聽 request features to ensure that the protected聽聽
[241]
cardholder data that you've been entrusted with聽 is never stored inside the Salesforce system for聽聽
[246]
