It’s crazy that my people still fall for
things like this.
[125]
Hey guys, my name is not Patrick Sales from
Sales Kingdom capital, my name is Fisayo Fosudo,
[131]
and No, I don’t have any investment fund
and I’m not selling you anything, I only
[136]
want to educate you about finance and the
economy and all I ask is that you hit that
[141]
like button so more people can get educated
about the things we’ll be sharing on the
[146]
channel, including Ponzi schemes and their
methods, how you can avoid them and some good
[153]
investments for you.
[154]
The Nigerian Deposit insurance company came
forward with the number that Nigerians lost
[164]
between last year, 2020 and this year.
[167]
3 million Nigerians have lost almost 20 billion
Naira or about 41 million dollars to Ponzi
[174]
schemes .I feel this is only an estimate because
speculators show that some of the scams have
[180]
duped people for about 140 billion Naira almost
300 million dollars.
[185]
From schemes like MBA Forex and more.
[188]
That’s a lot of money to lose in this country.
[193]
We don’t have enough foreign investments
coming, we take loans as a country and yet.
[198]
We collectively manage to lose over a quarter
billion dollars.
[202]
How!
[203]
How?
[204]
So I already made a video about Ponzi schemes
in Nigeria and this is more of an update to
[207]
that video.
[208]
Like a part 2 of sorts.
[210]
In that video I talk about What a Ponzi scheme
is and I also talk about how it typically
[215]
works and what to avoid, you can watch that
with the link in the description below.
[219]
This video is an additional warning to everyone
and just me sharing for education.
[226]
Nigeria faced terrible economic times, we’ve
had multiple recessions, one in 2015 when
[231]
Oil prices dropped and we only recovered from
in 2016 to 2017 and then another in COVID
[238]
that drove the economy down, even deeper.
[241]
We did have a time where we barely scaled
through and like I said we also take a lot
[246]
of loans.
[247]
According to analysts and what we’ve seen,
Nigerians during these times have delved deeply
[253]
into Ponzi schemes.
[254]
MMM had a come back, we had Ultimate Cyclers,
I remember this one well and so many other
[259]
platforms that are just Ponzi schemes claiming
to help Nigerians so that they can gain.
[268]
One of the analysts groups and research papers
I sought was from Jack & Ibekwe in 2018.
[275]
They made a deep research paper on the Nigerian
Ponzi Scheme landscape and here’s what they
[280]
figured out.
[281]
They found out hundreds of Ponzi schemes first
of all and they put the age range of most
[287]
Ponzi participants to be between 20-29 so
typically my own age range.
[292]
Wow guys!
[293]
They also tend to be students, unemployed,
just had a bachelors degree, the Bsc and had
[299]
low income.
[300]
So it makes sense that they want to double
their income faster.
[303]
This isn’t helped by the fact that they
see other people in their age range or younger
[308]
into questionable dealings that also display
a flashy lifestyle.
[315]
The research also shows that many of the people
that participated in Ponzi schemes knew they
[320]
were in fact Ponzi schemes and actually wanted
to invest and get out quickly.
[326]
Why are we like this!
[328]
60% of the people Jack & Ibekwe surveyed said
that the harsh economic situation of Nigeria
[334]
forced them to join Ponzi schemes and many
of them said that these Ponzi schemes helped
[338]
them through the difficult times of the recession
but so did it leave a couple other people
[343]
defrauded but many people simply don’t care
about other people as far as their own pocket
[349]
gets that Ponzi money.
[352]
Another research also shows that the participation
number is quite high.. that assuming we hold
[358]
Nigeria’s population to the 200 million
people number, 5-10% is about right.
[366]
So 10s of millions of Nigerians just throwing
money away or looking for a fast profit.
[372]
When in fact the scheme is just a gamble and
not an investment.
[376]
They promise very big returns and only distribute
that money round until it crashes.
[383]
It’s the nature of us in some sort and this
is why betting websites rank as some of the
[390]
highest viewed websites in the country.
[393]
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again,
if an investment says you will gain 5, 10%,
[400]
20% Return every month after you invest your
capital and then you’ll get your capital
[406]
back.
[407]
Listen carefully, if they guarantee that you
will make interests these high, every month
[413]
consistently.
[414]
It is fraud!
[415]
Investments are very risky you shouldn’t
put your money in things you don’t understand.
[420]
And I know someone is about to tell me,
[423]
But Fisayo, Forex trading can make me this
much, oh but Fisayo, Bitcoin and Ethereum,
[431]
wait Fisayo, Agriculture investments can make
you that much.
[436]
Yes I know.
[437]
But look again.
[438]
Speaking of Forex trading, I’ve tried it
myself, you can infect lose all your money
[444]
if you make the wrong bets because guys, you
cannot predict the future and at some point
[448]
one has to stop themselves to ask if they
aren’t gambling fortunes away especially,
[454]
especially if they don’t understand the
markets.
[457]
Don’t invest in what you yourself don’t
know and understand and don’t trust someone
[462]
else with your money that claims to have an
investment portfolio if they are not registered
[469]
with the SEC.
[471]
I will leave a link to the SEC portal and
the CAC portal where you can check for a company
[476]
name.
[477]
You will be shocked that none of these Ponzi
schemes are there and people still give their
[485]
money to them.
[486]
If we analyze crypto currency as well.
[489]
It fluctuates a lot.
[490]
A whole lot.
[491]
Same way it can go up 20% it can come down
20% or more.
[495]
Unless you’re doing your investments long
term, don’t bother trying to game a market.
[500]
It can work very successfully and very badly
and that’s the thing, you don’t know what
[505]
the future holds.
[506]
Don’t give your money to anyone to trade
for you.
[509]
And don’t trade what you can’t afford
to lose.
[511]
I also want to touch on the Agric investments
I’ve seen and people would promise 50% returns
[520]
in 3 months, I’ve seen people promise that
and they haven’t even seen any farm or anything
[527]
remotely close to what they have in assets.
[530]
Even legitimate agricultural businesses while
they can promise you high returns, they can
[536]
also be affected by climate changes and insecurity.
[539]
Cattle rearers might just send their cattle
to someone’s crops and eat everything.
[547]
Droughts could happen and we don’t even
have super advanced farming yet on a large
[551]
scale.
[552]
How are we seeing all these high percentages
in gains.
[564]
However.
[572]
All of this isn’t to say that you shouldn’t
invest.
[575]
Just don’t invest in something you don’t
know very much of.
[579]
In fact it even helps if you partake in that
farming industry or crypto industry yourself
[586]
first hand.
[587]
As we are all well aware the CBN sort of banned
cryptocurrency trading then went back on their
[592]
vocal steps to say that the banks are simply
being exempt from the crypto space.
[597]
This is simply to protect the banks and many
naive citizens because like Ponzi schemes,
[601]
crypto was being used for weird things too.
[604]
There are people trying to scam with the aid
of p2p where they take people’s funds, there
[609]
are also people there are also people selling
gift cards they obtained falsely.
[617]
However, there is more good that can come
out of this.
[621]
You see, in my last finance Friday video.
[624]
I talked about how Nigerians can earn up to
$100 a day or more, considering that $100
[629]
is about 48,000 Naira and our minimum wage
for the month is 30,000 naira.
[634]
In that video, I share 10 ways you can do
so and With these methods, you can earn foreign
[639]
exchange legally and legitimately which is
also good for the economy.
[643]
It’s one of the ways that Nigeria can get
foreign exchange when you do skill based work
[645]
on websites like Upwork and Fiverr.
[647]
You can design, code, voice over, write and
do a lot of things online for some cool cash.
[654]
You can promote things for legitimate businesses
on social media, and many more, jus watch
[659]
the videos, linked below.
[660]
In one of the books I always recommend, the
millionare next door, the research shows that
[667]
people actually make more money, millions
even, from the works of their hands rather
[673]
than the investments in other people’s businesses
or even some kind of assets like gold, stocks
[678]
and Bitcoin and I’ve found that to be true
myself.
[681]
So why not just find a creative way to plug
your own unique idea to the global space,
[686]
I’ll leave a link in the description to
get the millionaire next door book free for
[690]
30 days.
[692]
It actually changed my mind about money and
I can’t recommend it enough.
[696]
I have also talked about the Union Bank’s
M36 app where you can invest in actual bonds,
[705]
fixed deposits and gain quite some interest
in the Nigerian capital market.
[711]
I’ll also leave a link to where I mentioned
it in my video.
[717]
The one where I discuss all my streams of
income earning up to $500 a day give or take.
[723]
So yeah, you don’t necessarily have to invest
in something you don’t understand.
[728]
You can study about something Like a valuable
skill, learn by working and providing services
[733]
for a fee.
[737]
People invest because they don’t just want
money sitting down, they want to hedge against
[741]
inflation or in the case of Nigeria, currency
devaluation so they put it in an appreciating
[745]
asset like stocks or crypto currency.
[748]
However, it’s a long term plan and not a
short term game, I know because I put away
[754]
a large sum of all my earning for a whole
year and lived below my means.
[759]
However, seek to understand an investment,
read about it, ask questions, drop a comment
[765]
below for guidance and don’t invest in what
you don’t understand.
[770]
Also guys, I created a website where I’m
categorizing these Ponzi schemes and you can
[775]
also report a Ponzi scheme there.
[777]
The site is called “isitponzi.com” I’ll
leave a link to it below.
[781]
You simply add the name or names of Ponzi
schemes you’ve encountered and describe
[788]
what they promise.
[790]
When you also add your email, you will get
notified when the website is launched.
[795]
It would look like this and we can have a
database so people can easily report Ponzi
[800]
schemes and find out if the scheme that they
are considering is one.
[806]
That’s it from me guys.
[807]
If you have any question please leave them
in the comments below, do hit that like button
[811]
and hit that subscribe button and click the
bell icon beside it so you’ll be the first
[817]
to know when I post a new video.
[819]
Thank you so much for watching and I’ll
see you in the next one.
