Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Durability Test – Fake Folding Glass?! - YouTube
Channel: JerryRigEverything
[0]
Samsung just released a new folding
[2]
phone with a bolt claim that it has
[4]
revolutionary flexible glass like it
[7]
says here on their website we'll be
[8]
putting that to the test today this is
[10]
the Samsung Z flip or the flips
[13]
depending on how you open the box it
[16]
does come with a case one for each half
[18]
of the phone kind of nice
[20]
Samsung says this is a statement
[22]
smartphone for people who want to stand
[24]
out a phone that demands attention and
[27]
I'd have to agree the ability to fold
[30]
your phone in half is genuinely crazy
[31]
and by crazy I mean crazy awesome we can
[35]
now have a full sized phone and a
[36]
compact design that takes up half the
[38]
space the future is amazing it's time
[41]
for a durability test let's go I mean
[44]
let's get started
[46]
[Music]
[48]
[Applause]
[49]
[Music]
[51]
starting off pay very close attention to
[54]
this first warning and remember it it
[56]
says avoid pressing hard on the screen
[58]
or the front camera lens tap the screen
[60]
lightly to keep it safe
[62]
Samsung said at their launch event that
[63]
they've done the impossible and created
[65]
ultra-thin glass that folds this glass
[68]
can be folded over 200,000 times Samsung
[72]
said when you fold it
[73]
you're not just bending glass you're
[75]
bending the laws of physics but that
[77]
warning included on the phone isn't as
[79]
confidence inducing as Samsung's launch
[81]
event attempted to be it does feel nice
[84]
though this type of fold is definitely
[86]
my favorite so far
[87]
I like having a phone that folds instead
[89]
of having a tablet that folds there are
[91]
two things I noticed right off the bat
[93]
with the Z flip one is the crease here
[95]
still along the center not a big deal
[97]
there's also a small divot in the
[99]
display above the front-facing camera
[101]
lens you can see the curve of my lights
[103]
along with the bend of the surface of
[105]
that display the Samsung logo along the
[108]
spine gets entirely covered up when the
[109]
phone is open this new hinge design
[111]
apparently has thin brushes inside to
[113]
keep out dust we'll test that later
[115]
there's also no screen lifting off the
[117]
frame like we saw on the Motorola RAZR
[119]
which probably makes this design much
[121]
safer and more long-term there is a bit
[124]
of a gap between the two halves of the
[125]
phone when it's closed also fine and it
[128]
makes sense because if the screen really
[129]
is glass we can't have glass clacking
[132]
against glass every time the phone gets
[134]
closed that just wouldn't end well
[136]
speaking of things not ending well it's
[139]
time to see if this material really is
[140]
glass or not I've been doing the same
[142]
durability test on every major new
[144]
smartphone since the galaxy s6 came out
[147]
five years ago it is an expensive hobby
[149]
yes but I think it's fairly useful in
[151]
finding out what your phone is made from
[152]
and how well it'll handle everyday life
[154]
plastic as we know scratches at level
[157]
two or three real glass would scratch it
[159]
a five or six and sapphire would scratch
[161]
at an eight or nine right under diamonds
[164]
which are level ten as my first most
[166]
pick touches the display of the galaxy Z
[168]
flip we can see marks start to appear
[170]
this is rather unfortunate continuing
[173]
onward we can see deeper grooves
[174]
happening at a level three this is
[176]
exactly how a plastic screen would react
[178]
exactly like we saw in the Galaxy fold
[180]
the Motorola RAZR and
[182]
basically every other plastic screen
[184]
smartphone ever made for kicks and
[186]
giggles we can bump it up to a level
[187]
four and I could physically feel the tip
[189]
of the pic start to cut the display
[191]
surface open so why in the world would
[193]
Samsung talk about flexible glass so
[195]
much on their website and at the launch
[197]
of it it could be that they are using a
[199]
hybrid plastic polymer with little
[201]
specks of glass ingredients inside and
[203]
then just you know calling a glass but
[205]
that doesn't really seem like a very
[207]
nice thing to be doing if a company says
[209]
glass their customers will think of a
[211]
hard clear material that has excellent
[213]
scratch resistance from a durability
[215]
perspective that scratch resistance is
[218]
the primary reason that glass is used on
[220]
basically every smartphone display
[222]
Samsung is calling this glass but this
[225]
display clearly doesn't have the scratch
[226]
resistance or structural benefits that
[229]
customers are expecting from glass if
[231]
glass isn't glass then truth doesn't
[234]
matter and truth should matter this
[236]
isn't American politics Samsung is
[239]
currently the number one smartphone
[240]
manufacturer in the world and we
[242]
shouldn't be calling this screen glass
[243]
when clearly my fingernail is leaving
[245]
marks on the surface over and over I'm
[248]
not sure what Samsung's thinking over
[250]
there but we clearly have scratches at
[252]
levels two three four and fingernail I
[254]
don't know what material this is but
[257]
Samsung definitely shouldn't be calling
[259]
it glass and I'm disappointed even if I
[263]
jump up here to the front facing ten
[265]
megapixel selfie camera the surface is
[267]
covered in that same so-called glass
[269]
material and can still be scratched with
[271]
my fingernail I'll come back to this
[272]
again in just a second the raised screen
[278]
bump around the edge of the screen is
[280]
made from plastic this is the same thing
[282]
we saw in the Galaxy fold this guy kind
[284]
of holds the screen in place and keeps
[286]
people from peeling off the top layer
[288]
[Music]
[289]
the volume rocker is made from metal the
[292]
recessed power button here on the side
[294]
is stretchable I'll set my finger print
[297]
and see if it still works don't mind my
[299]
thumb by the way I smashed it with a TV
[301]
a few weeks ago now the phone is still
[303]
able to be unlocked even though the
[305]
fingerprint scanner is damaged but to
[307]
test it some more I added some more
[308]
scratches
[311]
and after the additional scratches are
[315]
in place my fingerprints stopped working
[317]
interesting the frame of the galaxy z
[322]
flip is made from metal and down here
[324]
along the bottom you have more metal
[326]
alongside the singular loudspeaker the
[328]
USBC port and you know the no headphone
[330]
jack the whole frame of the phone seems
[333]
to be made from metal which is a good
[334]
thing and will hopefully keep the phone
[336]
together during the bin test later there
[339]
are a few plastic antenna lines and a
[341]
removable SIM card tray but no
[343]
expandable memory the center hinge
[345]
mechanism is made from metal which that
[348]
Samsung logo recessed into the spine
[350]
each of the tiny letters is made from a
[352]
piece of shiny foil that is glued inside
[354]
the cavity these will probably never
[356]
fall out on their own but it's
[357]
interesting to see what the Z flip is
[358]
made from the rear panels are made from
[361]
glass both the top and the bottom
[363]
sections this mirror purple is kind of
[365]
growing on me it gradually switches
[367]
between purple and blue depending on how
[369]
the light is shining on it there are two
[371]
cameras on the back a 12 megapixel ultra
[373]
wide-angle camera and they 12 megapixel
[375]
normal camera both covered in real
[377]
scratch resistant glass I think the
[380]
fingerprints are getting a bit out of
[381]
hand though thanks to our channel
[382]
sponsored D brand for hooking me up with
[384]
the limited edition robot camo each of
[387]
these fingerprint fighting skins are
[388]
totally unique no two phones will be the
[391]
same and the individual drawings are
[393]
super intricate and are currently
[394]
available for every phone that D brand
[396]
covers not just the galaxy Z flip I got
[399]
one added to the back of the grip case
[400]
for my note 10 plus since the grip case
[403]
has the cutout for skins and can be
[404]
swapped out whenever kind of fun I'll
[406]
leave a link down in the description if
[408]
you want to pick up some robot camo or a
[410]
case for your own phone one cool thing
[412]
about the folds is that has the world's
[414]
tiniest viewfinder for selfie taking I
[416]
can double click the power button and it
[418]
lets me see myself and take a cute
[420]
little pic thumbs up for that will
[422]
perform the world's smallest scratch
[424]
test on it and moving up through Mohs
[426]
scale of hardness we can see that pics 1
[428]
through 5 don't leave any marks like we
[430]
would expect we only see scratches
[432]
starting at a level 6 with deeper
[434]
grooves at a level 7 which is the
[436]
scratch resistance we expect from
[438]
anything with the word glass in the name
[440]
anything that scratches earlier should
[442]
not be called glass
[443]
even if the Z flip displayed does
[446]
hypothetically have glass ingredients in
[448]
it
[448]
we shouldn't be calling it glass unless
[450]
it has the properties of glass I can't
[452]
go make a pile of mud sprinkle in some
[454]
chocolate chips and then call my mudda
[456]
cookie just because it has some of the
[458]
ingredients of a cookie that shouldn't
[460]
be allowed but then display lasted about
[462]
15 seconds under the heat from my
[464]
lighter when I pulled the flame away
[465]
there were burn marks still left on the
[467]
screen and it did not recover one really
[469]
interesting thing though if you watch
[471]
again is that you can physically see the
[473]
screen change shape
[474]
as the heat from my lighter heats it up
[476]
plastic of course is affected by the
[478]
temperature of my lighter glass however
[480]
would not be physically affected in the
[482]
same way as the surface cools down the
[484]
shape of the screen returns to normal
[485]
let's start with the slam shut test you
[488]
know if you get a little aggressive with
[490]
hanging up on someone after a phone call
[491]
and you smash the phone closed we got to
[495]
see if the phone survives it does have
[497]
the physical raised bumpers all along
[499]
the outer edge of the screen those
[501]
bumpers are absorbing most of the
[502]
slamming force and the screen is still
[505]
in one piece of course the phone is
[507]
meant to fold inwards Samsung said it
[509]
was survived 200 thousand times which is
[512]
a hundred eighty two times a day and if
[513]
you plan on keeping your phone for three
[515]
years bending back the opposite
[516]
direction though is a different story
[519]
with the first flex we get a small
[521]
separation of the frame near the antenna
[523]
line and the top half bumper started
[525]
coming loose but the screen of the Z
[527]
flip is still entirely intact and in one
[529]
piece they still shuts and opens with no
[532]
grinding of the hinge
[533]
we'll try it again you can see the back
[535]
panels of the phone meet in the center
[537]
providing more support to keep the phone
[538]
from bending backwards and the phone
[541]
hinge does a really good job of keeping
[542]
the phone shape for the most part only
[544]
on our third bin did we finally hear a
[546]
snap from the frame near that power
[547]
button and even then the so-called glass
[550]
screen of the Z flip is still intact
[552]
folding screens are pretty resilient
[554]
even though the phone doesn't really
[556]
shut quite right anymore it's physically
[558]
withstanding quite a bit more abuse than
[559]
I initially thought it could only now
[562]
after all its previous bins and cracks
[565]
does the back panel shatter it's only a
[567]
cosmetic wound
[568]
since the display is still working just
[569]
fine and this is good to know all the
[571]
important things are still functional
[573]
you might be asking hey Jerry what if
[576]
there is a super thin
[577]
layer of glass on top of the display if
[579]
that were true we would start to see
[581]
fractures and cracks from that nano
[583]
layer but instead we only see the tip of
[585]
my most pics cutting into the plastic
[587]
like we would see with any piece of
[588]
plastic that gets cut the screen is in
[591]
no way scratch resistant whatsoever and
[593]
if poked hard enough the pixels will
[595]
still get damaged it does survive my bin
[598]
test however and everything is still
[599]
functional this is certainly the most
[601]
durable folding phone we've seen yet
[603]
Samsung did say that they designed this
[605]
new hinge with little tiny fibers inside
[607]
or little brushes to keep out dust and
[610]
dirt from the folding bits it'll be
[612]
awesome to see what this looks like from
[613]
the inside during the teardown so make
[615]
sure you're subscribed to that after
[619]
pouring my rocks on the screen and
[620]
making sure they cover the entire phone
[622]
just like it would if you dropped it
[624]
when you accidentally go outside
[625]
initially I could hear a few little
[627]
complaints of the dust inside the hinge
[631]
[Music]
[633]
but after blowing all the dust off those
[638]
complaints mostly went away this new
[643]
hinge design might actually be the start
[645]
to something really good but the real
[647]
danger of calling something glass means
[649]
that people will think they have the
[650]
protection of glass when that clearly is
[652]
not the case
[653]
glass distributes pressure along the
[655]
whole phone while this plastic allows
[658]
that pressure to get in and damage
[659]
pixels you can see that each pressure
[661]
point for my pick kills the line of
[663]
pixels directly above it this would not
[665]
happen if the screen were glass and it's
[667]
dangerous to let people walk around with
[668]
that false sense of security like
[670]
Samsung gives them when they call it
[672]
glass and that's not all
[674]
each of these puncture wounds does let
[675]
air get inside the sealed OLED layers
[678]
which kills even more pixels a puncture
[680]
or cut in the plastic screen is a cancer
[683]
that will eventually spread across the
[684]
whole display yeah I sound a bit
[686]
apocalyptic but it's important to know
[688]
what your phone is capable of and what
[690]
might damage it so remember the Samsung
[692]
Z flip does not have a true glass screen
[695]
and it's still very fragile that being
[698]
said it's also still pretty awesome
[699]
Samsung should just correct their
[701]
verbage let me know what you think of
[703]
Samsung's verbage down in the comments
[705]
if you enjoyed this durability test come
[707]
check out my last video we monitored
[709]
a wheelchair to go on a safari in Africa
[711]
it turned out pretty cool
[712]
coming out with me on Instagram and
[714]
Twitter and thanks a ton for watching
[716]
I'll see you around
