President Donald Trump Pushes Back On Congressional Request For His Taxes | All In | MSNBC - YouTube

[0]
the president's lawyers are celebrating
[1]
tax day today by sending a defiant
[4]
pugilistic letter to the IRS arguing
[6]
what Donald Trump's tax returns should
[8]
not be furnished to the House Ways and
[9]
Means Committee
[10]
despite the legislation to the contrary
[13]
president's lawyer argues that his
[15]
client is just a humble citizen facing a
[17]
possibly unconstitutional Inquisition
[19]
from Congress playing dress up as a
[21]
quote junior varsity IRS letter even
[24]
compares Donald Trump to leaders the
[25]
civil rights movement writing what if
[27]
during the height of the civil rights
[28]
movement the Democrat controlled house
[29]
tried to intimidate African American
[31]
leaders by requesting their tax returns
[33]
yes what about that for years Trump and
[36]
his allies have basically grabbed
[37]
whatever argument they can to try to
[39]
prevent access to his taxes he's under
[41]
audit it's not legal it was litigating
[43]
the campaign this week and Sarah Sanders
[45]
tried out a new one points for novelty
[47]
Congress won't be able to understand
[49]
Trump's taxes I don't think Congress
[53]
particularly not this group of
[54]
congressmen and women are smart enough
[57]
to look through the thousands of pages
[59]
that I would assume that President
[61]
Trump's taxes will be my guest says most
[64]
of them don't do their own taxes
[66]
democratic congresswoman Katey Porter of
[68]
California responded quote our freshman
[69]
class includes intelligence analysts
[71]
analysts nurses veterans and ahem law
[74]
professors I think we can handle it that
[76]
congresswoman Katey Porter joins me now
[78]
congresswoman Sarah Sanders basically
[81]
said you're too dumb to understand these
[82]
taxes what do you think I know that I am
[86]
ready to take a look at Donald Trump's
[88]
tax returns and for secretary press
[90]
secretary Sanders information I do my
[92]
own taxes every year and I think our
[96]
it's really insulting that we're not
[98]
being treated as a co-equal branch of
[100]
government the law here is pretty clear
[102]
that the president needs to turn over
[103]
his tax returns and this is the job that
[105]
the American people have text us taxed
[108]
like kids in Texas asked us to do and
[111]
it's our job to do it so I really hope
[113]
the president complies with the law I
[114]
hope he quits dragging this out and I
[116]
have every confidence in my fellow men
[119]
and women on both sides of the aisle to
[120]
be able to review these tax returns how
[123]
do you interpret the letter today was
[124]
really quite provocative it was quite
[126]
aggressive about constitutional of the
[128]
Congress's Authority both under statute
[131]
and the Constitution and
[132]
does seem like they have gone very
[134]
nuclear very quickly how do you
[136]
interpret that I think it suggests the
[139]
reluctance of the President to comply
[142]
with the law he truly is exhibiting the
[144]
attitude that the rules that apply to
[146]
the rest of us don't apply to him he's
[149]
not a ordinary citizen he's the
[151]
president of the United States an office
[153]
that he ran for and he has considerable
[155]
power and the American people deserve to
[158]
know if Donald Trump is working for us
[160]
if there's nothing to see in his tax
[162]
returns there's nothing to see but
[164]
that's a question that needs to be
[166]
answered and that's why I wholeheartedly
[167]
believe the American people need to see
[170]
these tax returns you know there were
[171]
subpoenas today from congressional
[173]
investigators of Deutsche Bank and other
[175]
lenders the president part of the sort
[176]
of rounding out the financial picture
[178]
what's your response the president's
[181]
lawyers and some of his defenders are
[183]
trying to make sort of an interesting
[184]
argument which is basically yes he's
[186]
president but he's also simultaneously
[187]
private citizen Donald Trump and this is
[190]
some kind of invasion and encroachment
[192]
into that sacrosanct sphere of privacy
[195]
it just doesn't work that way anyone who
[198]
runs for office including folks who run
[200]
at the local level for school board for
[202]
City Council we all give up a great deal
[205]
of our privacy as a member of the House
[207]
of Representatives for example I have to
[209]
make financial disclosures and so he
[211]
can't have it both ways if he wants to
[213]
be President of the United States that
[215]
he needs to follow the rules and be
[217]
forthcoming about any business dealings
[219]
that may call into question what he's
[221]
doing as president and if he wants to
[223]
return to being a private citizen I
[225]
personally would be just fine with that
[227]
but if he wants to have the office of
[229]
President that he needs to follow the
[230]
rules he can't make the his own rules
[232]
this is a tripartite government there's
[234]
a role for the courts there's a role for
[236]
Congress and there's a role for the
[238]
president he doesn't get to control the
[239]
rest of us we each have an important job
[241]
to do I respect the job he has to do and
[244]
it's frustrating that he doesn't respect
[246]
the job of Congress you know the
[247]
president and Republicans and and their
[250]
allies spent the day touting the big tax
[252]
cut which was sort of a numerical sense
[255]
largely a corporate tax cut but the New
[257]
York Times ran this headline which I
[258]
thought was interesting face it you
[260]
probably got a tax cut studies
[261]
consistently find the 2017 law cut
[264]
taxes for most Americans most them don't
[265]
buy it there does seem to be a
[267]
divergence of reality which that most
[268]
people did seen their tax liability
[270]
reduced even if most people don't feel
[272]
that way what do you think of that I
[274]
think one of the things about the Trump
[276]
tax law is that it's having very
[278]
disparate effects around the country so
[280]
I represent Orange County California and
[282]
the limit in the Trump tax law on state
[285]
and local tax deductions is a huge issue
[287]
for us I was working on my taxes today
[290]
and every time I would put in a
[292]
deduction it would pop up you've already
[294]
hit your ten thousand dollar state local
[295]
deduction cap I'd put in something else
[297]
pop back up you've already hit your ten
[299]
thousand dollars state and local
[301]
deduction cap so for folks here in
[302]
Orange County we're hearing from a lot
[304]
of them that they owe five thousand
[306]
seven thousand even fourteen thousand
[307]
dollars in additional taxes and a lot of
[310]
folks are having to turn to credit cards
[311]
to try to find that money to pay those
[313]
extra taxes so by singling out states
[316]
that have expensive homes or that have
[319]
significant state and local taxes Donald
[321]
Trump is really making the effects of
[323]
his tax plan felt the UM is being felt
[325]
unevenly around the country so folks
[327]
here in Orange County are not happy I've
[329]
co-sponsored legislation to reverse the
[332]
limit on state and local taxes and I
[334]
have co-authored a bipartisan letter to
[336]
Speaker Pelosi and Majority maasai
[339]
Minority Leader McCarthy asking them to
[341]
bring that legislation up for a vote on
[342]
the House floor there's also news today
[345]
about how corporations have fair fared
[347]
under this regime twice as many
[349]
companies paying zero taxes under the
[353]
Trump tax plan the theory of the case
[354]
there was that that reduced liability
[356]
would lead to increased investment and
[358]
better job growth and the president's
[360]
defenders say hey look at just look at
[362]
the job numbers look at the the growth
[363]
numbers everything is going great what
[365]
do you say look the economy is doing
[368]
fine it was doing fine before this tax
[371]
plan what we've seen primarily as a
[373]
result of the tax plan is companies are
[375]
taking their money and they're engaging
[377]
in stock buybacks and that's exactly
[379]
what we saw with JPMorgan Chase you know
[381]
earlier this week in a hearing I asked
[383]
the CEO Jamie Dimon will you you know
[385]
look at this worker working full-time in
[387]
your bank they couldn't afford to make
[389]
ends meet how about raising worker pay
[391]
and so we're not seeing corporations
[393]
reinvest that money in fact if you read
[395]
a lot of shareholder letters
[397]
what these CEOs are saying is we have
[399]
access capital we have access cash we're
[402]
looking for ways to invest in I think
[403]
the obvious answer is to invest it back
[405]
in your workers to invest it back in the
[407]
American people who help make your
[409]
corporation profitable do you do you
[412]
think there will be appetite should
[413]
Congress Democrats retake Congress to
[416]
just reverse these tax cuts or to raise
[418]
taxes in other areas I personally think
[422]
we have to tackle tax reform we need
[423]
fair tax a fair tax plan and the fact
[426]
that more and more corporations are
[428]
paying zero is heading in the absolute
[430]
wrong direction so whether it's
[432]
reversing Trump's tax plan entirely
[434]
we're trying to improve upon the tax
[438]
plan we definitely have to do something
[439]
we can't keep asking Americans of
[442]
individual workers single moms like me
[444]
to shoulder the tax burden while large
[446]
corporations get off literally scot-free
[449]
you do your own taxes you mentioned
[450]
adding in deductions did you get that
[451]
file before he came on today are you are
[453]
you in under the wire I am on my way to
[455]
the post office written I do owe federal
[458]
tax this year my income being much lower
[461]
so I'm gonna get it in by the deadline
[463]
all right well good luck with that I'll
[464]
