12 Military Mottos For Entrepreneurs - YouTube
Channel: Valuetainment
[2]
I want you to think about this stat.
[4]
Ready?
[5]
60% of Fortune 500 companies in 1970 are no
longer in business today.
[12]
Let me say it one more time.
[15]
60% of Fortune 500 companies from 1970 are
no longer around.
[22]
I'm not saying they're different name -- they're
no longer around.
[27]
So you may ask the question, "How's that even
possible?"
[29]
The 500 biggest companies are no longer around
only 46 years later?
[35]
Yes, they're no longer around.
[36]
So why is that?
[37]
Why are they no longer around?
[38]
Well, look.
[39]
Just like a great country that at one point
was powerful -- Greece or Iran, just like
[48]
great countries like this [snap] can lose
their empire is the same way that Circuit
[52]
City, Blockbuster or Borders can lose an empire
like this [snap].
[56]
Why?
[57]
They get casual, they have too many victories,
they win one battle after another battle after
[61]
another battle and they lose it.
[62]
So it is very, very important that for you
and I as an entrepreneur - this shirt says,
[68]
"I am an entrepreneur" -- by the way, this
shirt gets more conversations started than
[71]
I can tell you.
[72]
If you want to know how to get the shirt,
I'll tell you about it at the end as well.
[75]
So just like I'm an entrepreneur, for us,
as entrepreneurs you follow this content because
[80]
you're an entrepreneur - it is very important
to be strategic on the way that you build
[84]
your business and if you think your business
that's generating you a quarter million dollars
[88]
a year, a half a million a year, a million
a year, cannot be gone, but a Fortune 500
[94]
did in 1970, you need to be rethinking your
strategy on your business.
[100]
So I chose 12 mottos.
[101]
Here are 12 mottos that I have from the military
-- not just U.S. Army, but military from all
[106]
over the world.
[107]
And I was in the Army before myself, in the
101st Airborne Division and I got recruited
[111]
to go become an 18 Delta -- an 18 Delta is
special forces in the U.S. Army and there
[115]
was a unit call the fifth group at Ft. Campbell,
Kentucky that was recruiting me because I
[119]
spoke five languages at the time and they
wanted to send me to DLI, which in Monterrey,
[125]
California.
[126]
And I was going to go to all these other things
and go ship to.
[131]
. . I got all the orders and at the last minute
I chose not to be a special forces.
[136]
But I know so many people that admire military
folks.
[141]
I've got 12 mottos that I think every entrepreneur
can learn a lot from.
[145]
And let me start off with the first one.
[147]
This is my favorite one because this is the
one that I heard all the time when I was in
[151]
the Army.
[152]
This is what the motto was.
[153]
You ready?
[154]
Here's what it says: Stay Alert, Stay Alive.
[156]
Let me say it one more time.
[157]
Stay Alert, Stay Alive.
[159]
Earlier I told you about 60% of Fortune 500
companies from 1970 are no longer around -- it's
[164]
because they did not stay alert.
[166]
They did not stay alive.
[167]
Blockbuster didn't think Netflix was real.
[171]
Borders didn't think Amazon was real.
[174]
Circuit City didn't think Best Buy was real.
[177]
They did not.
[178]
They thought there was no way anyone's going
to shop anywhere else but Circuit City.
[183]
There's no way Blockbuster -- that was everywhere.
[186]
Great branding.
[187]
Great logo.
[188]
Great everything.
[189]
There's no way anybody can put Blockbuster
out of business.
[191]
There's no way Borders is going to be put
out of business.
[193]
But it happened.
[194]
Why?
[195]
They did not stay alert.
[196]
They did not stay alive.
[197]
You've gotta know about what's going on in
the marketplace.
[199]
You've gotta know what's going on with your
home office staff, with your sales force,
[202]
with your assistant, with your clients, with
your partners, with your vendors, with legal,
[208]
with every single thing, you've got to know
because you've got to stay alert.
[210]
If you're not, you will be dead in the water
in the world of business.
[214]
Second motto, and this is from the Marines,
first battalion, at Camp Pendleton CA, right
[222]
outside of San Diego.
[224]
This is what they say.
[225]
It's very simple.
[226]
Whatever it takes.
[228]
Whatever it takes.
[229]
Grant Cardone calls it what?
[231]
Whatever it Takes Nation - there's a reason
for that.
[232]
But it says, "Whatever it takes."
[235]
As an entrepreneur, you've got to know that
it's whatever it takes.
[238]
If you've got to stay at the office till two
in the morning, it's whatever it takes.
[242]
If you've got to come to the office and work
hard for two, three, four, five years to make
[245]
your business work, whatever it takes.
[247]
If it takes you spending an entire weekend
to learn a product and learn your competitors
[252]
and you're working 24/7 on the clock - whatever
it takes.
[255]
If it takes you time to read these ten books
and learn and go record your presentation
[261]
at night and drink coffee and watch yourself
in a video recording on the computer to see
[265]
how you're selling and what you're sounding
like - whatever it takes.
[268]
If it takes you driving seven hours, 12 hours
to go get a client that may end up paying
[272]
you a $5,000 commission but it may introduce
you to these 20 other clients - whatever it
[277]
takes.
[278]
If it takes you taking a flight to go and
do something to maintain your license; it
[282]
doesn't matter.
[283]
It's whatever it takes, as long as it's legal.
[286]
It's whatever it takes.
[288]
And a lot of times I see entrepreneurs who
don't make it.
[290]
It's because they don't subscribe to the mentality
of whatever it takes.
[294]
Number three motto and this was for the U.S.
Navy Seal training - This is their motto Are
[300]
you ready?
[301]
The only easy day was yesterday.
[305]
The only easy day was yesterday.
[308]
What do they mean, the only easy day was yesterday?
[310]
Here's what they mean.
[312]
If you think training was hard yesterday,
it's going to be harder today.
[318]
And you may say that oh my God, yesterday
the training was so hard.
[321]
If you thought that was hard, today is going
to be even harder.
[325]
As an entrepreneur, if you are not improving
yourself, if you're not getting better, the
[330]
problems of the past, you already learned
how to solve.
[331]
But you've got to learn how to solve the problems
of today.
[335]
And it's going to be harder than the problems
in the past.
[337]
If you don't make progress, and know how to
handle the problems of today, you're reverting
[341]
back to the problems of yesterday.
[342]
So you've got to constantly be getting better.
[344]
It's a message of constantly having to improve.
[347]
Constantly figuring out ways to be edgy.
[349]
Constantly figuring out ways to get better.
[351]
If you do that, you stand a chance.
[353]
If you don't, you're reverting back to your
old habits.
[356]
Number four- this is by the USS Ronald Reagan
commission in 2003.
[362]
It was a nuclear powered super carrier, home
ported in Coronado, California -- obviously
[368]
the giver, Ronald Reagan, the president, had
this saying, when he had this battle with
[372]
the Soviet Union.
[373]
This was the statement: Peace through Strength.
[379]
Peace through Strength.
[381]
What does this mean?
[382]
Look, we don't want to fight, because if we
fight, we're going to beat you.
[386]
If you want to fight, we'll fight.
[389]
But we'd rather be peaceful and not have to
fight.
[392]
What do you want to do?
[393]
Okay?
[394]
Negotiations, going against competitors, going
against anybody else -- if you want to fight,
[400]
we're okay to fight.
[401]
But we'd rather be peaceful about this.
[403]
Which do you prefer?
[404]
Okay?
[405]
Peace through Strength.
[407]
Peace through Strength.
[408]
Now in order to have the peace you want, you
have to be strong.
[411]
So you as an entrepreneur need to increase
your strength so you can have peace.
[415]
That's what you need to be doing when it comes
to communicating with anybody that you have
[419]
as a competitor that you're dealing with.
[421]
Here's another one.
[422]
This is a famous one, from Leonidas if you've
seen the movie 300 you know that one scene
[427]
where Leonidas is standing with the spear
and the Persian Army is about to attack and
[432]
the line that he says in English, but there's
a way you say it in Greek, he goes and he's
[437]
ready for them to attack him and in English
he says, "Come and take them."
[444]
Come and take them.
[445]
By the way, this
same military unit that Leonidas started back
[455]
in the day got disbanded in 2013, I believe.
[460]
He says, "Come and take them.
[462]
Come and take our land from us.
[463]
Come and take what you've got.
[464]
That's the spirit of an entrepreneur, that's
competitive and protective and a lot of pride
[469]
and duty and honor for what they've put into
their land, they're going to say, "Hey competitor,
[474]
come and take our clients!
[475]
Come and show us what you've got.
[477]
You want to go up against us?
[478]
Come and take them.
[479]
We're gonna fight.
[480]
We may not be as big as you, but come and
take them.
[482]
It's an underdog going against a massive company,
hence, 60% of Fortune 500 companies from 1970
[491]
are no longer around, because somebody like
Leonidas said, "Come and take them."
[495]
Now an example like this obviously we know
what's going on with the military there in
[500]
today's time, but back in the day?
[502]
There was a general that knew how to lead
his people and went against his enemies and
[506]
did a great job.
[508]
Number six, this is from Royal Gurkha rifles,
U.K.
[515]
These are soldiers that were recruited from
Nepal and they were known as the bravest of
[518]
the brave.
[519]
Here's their saying.
[521]
Better to die, than to be a coward.
[524]
Better to die, than to be a coward.
[526]
What does that mean?
[527]
I'm an entrepreneur.
[529]
Better to die than to be a coward.
[532]
What are you afraid of?
[533]
Better to die and go face your fears, than
to be a coward.
[536]
Better to go on that sales appointment and
if the other person says no to you that to
[540]
be a coward.
[541]
Better to go out there and make that phone
call that you're afraid of making than to
[544]
be a coward.
[545]
This doesn't necessarily mean going to war.
[547]
Are you afraid of that phone call?
[548]
If you're afraid of that phone call, what
makes you think you're going to be able to
[550]
run a big business.
[551]
Pick up the phone and make some calls.
[553]
Don't be afraid.
[555]
If you're going to be afraid, it's better
to die than to be a coward.
[558]
It's better to be rejected than not to make
that phone call.
[561]
It's better to be rejected than not make that
proposal to your client.
[565]
It's better to be rejected than going and
taking the easy way out.
[568]
That's what they mean on the U.K. military
motto.
[572]
Here's another one, from Canada.
[574]
This one is the joint task force to elite
special forces -- pretty much their Navy Seals
[580]
team.
[584]
Theirs's is, Facta non Verba -- it means Deeds,
not Words.
[593]
So if you're going to tell your client you're
going to do something, do it.
[595]
If you're going to tell yourself you're going
to do something, do it.
[599]
If you're going to tell your team you're going
to do something, do it.
[601]
If you're going to tell the world you're going
to do something, do it.
[604]
Don't just talk about it.
[605]
Go and do it.
[606]
Show the results.
[607]
That's the Canadian motto that they have.
[609]
Here's one from U.K., Royal Navy.
[611]
This was their navy on what they said.
[615]
Let me see if I can pronounce this right.
[617]
Everybody from the U.K., you can hold me accountable.
[619]
I think this is Latin so it says Si vis pacem,
para bellum - and what this means in Latin
[630]
is if you wish for peace, prepare for war.
[634]
If you wish for peace, prepare for war.
[637]
What the heck does this have to do with entrepreneurs?
[640]
EVERYTHING.
[641]
If you wish for peace, prepare for war.
[644]
It's slightly different than the earlier one
that said peace through strength.
[649]
It explains it in a different way.
[650]
If you wish for peace, prepare for war.
[654]
You want to be peaceful?
[655]
Yes.
[656]
Be prepared for an attorney to put you out
of business.
[659]
Be prepared for a company to sue you and put
you out of business.
[663]
But be prepared for war in order to have the
peace.
[667]
Save your money so you don't have to worry
about if they sue you and you go out of business
[670]
because you don't have the money.
[671]
Put your money aside in case something happens,
an emergency, crisis, bad market, bad economy,
[675]
bad all this -- if you have the money in place,
because you're prepared for war, so you're
[680]
not being put out of business.
[681]
I can't tell you how many smaller entrepreneurs
are put out of business because every penny
[686]
they made, they don't have their taxes properly,
"Oh, Pat, it's not a big deal.
[691]
I'll get to it two years from now.
[692]
I'm behind for two, three years."
[693]
Boom.
[694]
Big mistake.
[695]
You're not prepared for war.
[696]
Oh, you know I'll pay these expenses and these
credit card issues later on.
[700]
BOOM.
[701]
You address something and they need a high
credit score, you don't, they're not going
[703]
to do business with you.
[704]
Oh, you know I'm not worried about these creditors.
[706]
Pay your taxes, pay your creditors, keep your
finances in place, keep a lot of savings in
[711]
place, be liquid, be ready, be all that stuff
because you're ready for war.
[716]
And by doing so, you will wish for peace.
[719]
Number nine, this is a German one.
[722]
This is from Kampfschwimmer, the German version
of the U.S. Navy Seals and obviously no one
[730]
knows how bit their operation is, like most
of them.
[733]
And theirs was Lerne leiden ohne zu klagen
- I lived in Germany for a couple of years
[738]
- Lerne leiden ohne zu klagen and this one
means, "Learn to suffer without Complaining."
[745]
You know, sometimes I sit down and am having
a conversation, and there's one guy I'm doing
[749]
business with -- Matt and Sheena Sapaula,
and I told them this the other day.
[754]
I said, "It's like you never hear complaints
from them.
[757]
They're so optimistic.
[759]
And so this doesn't mean that things don't
happen to their lives.
[761]
But you don't hear complaints from them.
[763]
They're so positive.
[764]
Right?
[765]
They're not complaining.
[766]
They have so many things that they're dealing
with in their personal lives but you don't
[770]
hear them complaining about it.
[771]
Then you have somebody you talk to and say,
"How are you?"
[773]
Oh man, I've been sick for a week.
[774]
How are you?
[775]
Oh, you have no idea what I've been dealing
with.
[776]
How are you?
[777]
Oh my gosh, you know, my car broke down.
[778]
Oh, how are you?
[779]
Everything is something happened to them.
[782]
Honestly, all the entrepreneurs out there
-- no one really cares.
[785]
And I'm dead serious with you.
[787]
No one really cares.
[788]
So just don't complain about it.
[790]
Find ways to fix it.
[792]
There is a little bit of strong verbiage there
to learn to suffer without complaining, but
[796]
at the end of the day, you've got to learn
to understand that as an entrepreneur, you
[799]
are not the only person that's going through
not having money, I'm late on this, I have
[803]
to pay my rent, I haven't made sales -- you
are not the only person.
[806]
But those who make it, they double time more
than you, they improve more than you.
[809]
They work harder than you, for them to make
it.
[811]
And if you're one that's already making it,
then good for you.
[813]
You're the example for everybody else.
[815]
But there's a reason why a few make make it.
[819]
Number ten.
[820]
This is from First Infantry Division -- No
Mission too Difficult, No Sacrifice Too Great,
[827]
Duty First.
[830]
Well, listen.
[835]
As a business owner, you're going to face
a lot of different things.
[838]
And you're gonna have to slay a dragon many
different times as an entrepreneur.
[841]
Many different times.
[842]
But I tell you, none of them are that big
that you won't know how to handle them.
[847]
None of them are that big that can't handle.
[850]
For the most part, Things that put people
out of business generally have to do with
[854]
a lot of lack of being prepared for them.
[856]
If you don't prepare for it and something
happens [slam] you could be put out of business.
[859]
But that has to do with a lack of preparation.
[861]
For the most part, a lot of things in business
are very possible and obviously, a disastrous
[866]
economy that takes place, that's a different
story, but for the most part, a lot of things
[872]
are possible if the missions in place, and
a lot of things will be very difficult, but
[878]
nothing that you cannot handle.
[880]
And it's got to be mission driven.
[882]
You've got to make sacrifices.
[883]
Duty first.
[884]
Your people come first.
[885]
Duty first.
[886]
It cannot be you first.
[887]
Duty.
[888]
Your duty to your people, your duty to your
clients, your duty to your investors.
[891]
Your duty to your business owners.
[892]
That comes first as an entrepreneur.
[896]
Number 11 -- I'm getting to my favorite one.
[899]
And this is from Israeli Engineering Corps.
[901]
You ready?
[902]
Israeli Engineering Corps -- here we go.
[904]
"The hard we shall do today, the impossible
we shall do tomorrow."
[910]
The hard we shall do today, the impossible
we shall do tomorrow."
[914]
What does it mean?
[915]
The more you and I focus as an entrepreneur
on doing the difficult things today and again
[920]
difficult things tomorrow and you keep doing
the difficult things, difficult things, difficult
[924]
things, and you stack doing hard things over
and over and over and over again, a year,
[928]
two years, three years, five years from now,
you're going to do something that everybody's
[931]
going to say, "Man, that was the impossible.
[934]
He or she did the impossible."
[935]
No, doing the impossible is a culmination
of doing 10,000 hard things.
[940]
That's really what it is.
[941]
So if you want to do the impossible, be willing
to do 1,000 hard things on a day-to-day basis.
[947]
All of a sudden you'll have something happen
and everybody calls you a hero, but you've
[950]
got to be willing to day to day do the hard
things.
[953]
And the last one here.
[955]
We were in Chicago and we were having a stogie,
we were having a cigar with my friend Matt
[959]
Sapaula -- I mentioned him earlier.
[960]
He's a Marine, and -- how many tours did he
go on?
[963]
Two or three?
[964]
He went on two tours himself as a Marine and
we're sitting and we're having dinner and
[968]
all of a sudden, I see him giving a toast
and he says these lines, and I had to go research
[973]
who said this, so this is a line quote that's
used by Marines often, but it was said by
[978]
a guy named Walter Winchell who was a news
commentator, and here's what he said.
[983]
It was a beautiful setting.
[984]
He stood up, he grabbed the glass, and he
had everybody else stand up and hold a glass
[989]
and he says, "Never above you, never below
you, always beside you, oorah."
[1000]
And you see this, if you go online and you
search those quotes, you'll see it all over
[1006]
the place.
[1007]
And it says freedom isn't free.
[1010]
Never above you, never below you, always beside
you oorah.
[1014]
That's a very good quote for you to realize
that as an entrepreneur, as you're building
[1019]
a business, it's all about the team.
[1021]
It is all about the team.
[1024]
And if you can have your team's back -- you're
going to challenge them -- if you have your
[1028]
team's back -- if you're always with them,
if you realize it's really all about them,
[1033]
and if you realize it's not about you being
a jerk, and being above everybody, and it's
[1038]
all about your show, selfish, selfish, selfish,
then you have a team.
[1042]
And there's a reason why Marines teach about
unity.
[1045]
Marines teach about you working together as
a team, and it's not only about the stuff
[1049]
you get here, it's about what the other soldiers
that run with you will one day say about you
[1055]
when you're no longer around or they're no
longer in business with you.
[1058]
Because that's what really matters at the
end of the day.
[1060]
Anyways, so those are some of the mottos that
I like for the military that I wanted to share
[1064]
with you.
[1065]
For some of you guys that are still asking
about this shirt, I'm telling you, this is
[1068]
a conversation starter -- I am an entrepreneur.
[1072]
It's got the Valuetainment logo here and for
some of you that want to get it, you can go
[1076]
on the -- the store is ValuetainmentStore.com
go to ValuetainmentStore.com -- we'll put
[1083]
the link in the description, but even if you
go on the top and click on Valuetainmentstore.com
[1088]
there's a lot of different shirts.
[1089]
This is a shirt that we just came out with
in the store, Valuetainmentstore.com and you
[1093]
can get this shirt, "I Am an Entrepreneur"
-- they have them in different colors, different
[1097]
sizes, great quality, great workout shirt,
and put them on, go out there in the mall,
[1101]
go out there and work out.
[1102]
People are going to ask you questions about
you also being an entrepreneur because entrepreneurs
[1106]
like to talk to one another as entrepreneurs.
[1109]
Paul, throw me my pillow.
[1110]
My gosh, we've got to get you to work out,
your left arm is weak.
[1114]
Okay, so Paul is back, Mario is back from
the tour.
[1117]
These guys are back.
[1118]
They were living in an RV for 35 days but
they are back now and our goal is still to
[1122]
get to 100,000 subs by August 31 and we need
your help.
[1127]
So I need you to click on the subscribe button
wherever this is at on different sites -- click
[1131]
on the subscribe button to subscribe to our
channel Valuetainment.
[1134]
We believe pound for pound we can go against
anybody with our content on YouTube for entrepreneurship
[1139]
and help us get to 100,000 subs and invite
other people to also watch the content here.
[1144]
If you have any questions about what I talked
about today, or any of the mottos, please
[1147]
comment on the bottom.
[1148]
Thanks for watching.
[1149]
Take care, bye bye.
