What Is the Monthly Cost of a Tesla? - YouTube
Channel: Ben Sullins
[0]
hey what's up data geeks today I've got
[2]
kind of a short video for you here I was
[5]
doing some analysis recently on the
[7]
money hopefully saving by having a Tesla
[12]
and it's something that they tout on
[14]
their website as saving six to nine
[17]
thousand dollars a year I think and they
[19]
even factored in when you look at the
[21]
overall cost of you know your monthly
[23]
payment or whatever
[25]
so I got mine back in January and or
[29]
early February late January and I've had
[33]
it this whole year it's November now so
[35]
you know good sample size here and I
[38]
wanted to actually go back and analyze
[39]
my bill and my electric bill and compare
[42]
kind of the gas prices and everything
[44]
else figure out if and how much I'm
[47]
actually saving on by having this car so
[50]
what I have here on my screen is some
[53]
data I pulled together and this first
[55]
data set here just shows the actual
[57]
electricity bill I have from the local
[60]
electrical company here so this is each
[63]
month you can see the number of billing
[65]
days the on peak the off-peak charges
[67]
and then these super off-peak charges
[70]
now I highlighted this because here in
[72]
California we have a special rate that
[75]
you get during this time for electric
[78]
vehicle owners so if you have a Tesla or
[80]
any other kind of electric vehicle but
[83]
if you're going to buy one just get a
[84]
tell so don't even worry about the other
[85]
ones you should apply for this and you
[88]
can get I think it's close to forty to
[90]
fifty percent off of the actual rate the
[93]
normal kilowatt per hour rate that they
[95]
charge you
[98]
and so I highlighted this column because
[100]
essentially this is all the money going
[103]
towards the cost of gas or what would be
[105]
gas for my car per month and so you can
[108]
see here the average is about sixty
[110]
bucks and that's not nothing and so I
[113]
wanted to get deeper and figure out you
[114]
know how much it actually cost kind of
[116]
per mile and all that I also did some
[119]
analysis of times when I wasn't home and
[121]
my car wasn't here so it wasn't charging
[125]
so I could see you know okay maybe we
[127]
have the dishwasher going or whatever
[128]
else and is all of this money here all
[131]
these charges going towards the car and
[134]
after looking at that I figured it's 99
[136]
percent so even with dishwashers and
[138]
other things that you've scheduled to go
[140]
at midnight or whatever during this time
[142]
it really doesn't add up too much so I
[144]
figured you know what just to be
[145]
conservative let's apply all of it to
[148]
the cost of transportation here so then
[151]
I was able to pull down the number of
[153]
miles driven and I did that with this
[155]
app I use called mile IQ which actually
[158]
shows you it's an easy way to classify
[160]
business versus personal travel and all
[163]
that kind of stuff so you can get
[164]
reimbursed for for all your driving so I
[166]
did that and I looked and I got the
[167]
number of miles per month and I punched
[170]
that in there I had to take an average
[172]
for September because I changed my phone
[175]
over and it lost some data or whatever
[176]
so you know looking at that and where
[179]
the trend was going I calculated that
[181]
that was the number for September then I
[183]
took the average gas price and I'm here
[185]
at San Diego so gas is pretty cheap or
[187]
so it's pretty expensive it's it's not
[190]
cheap and so that's the average gas
[193]
price I took the average miles per
[195]
gallon of a car like mine and then I
[198]
calculated out some other things so the
[200]
overall average cost that somebody else
[203]
would be paying for driving this many
[206]
miles at this gas price is here in
[209]
column K so you can kind of see where 90
[211]
bucks
[212]
low 90s maybe a little over 100 that
[215]
month because the gas price fluctuated a
[217]
little bit then I compare that to the
[219]
super off-peak charges that I had and I
[222]
can see how much money I'm actually
[223]
saving so overall it looks like I'm
[226]
saving on average about 34 dollars a
[228]
month which doesn't sound like a lot you
[231]
know in the grand
[231]
give me things it's not a tremendous
[233]
amount of money but if you consider the
[235]
average percent savings that is on my
[238]
monthly gas bill that's close to 40% so
[241]
that's a lot so imagine if you could
[243]
take any part of your aspect of your
[245]
life if your monthly cost something like
[247]
gas and save 40% on it yeah that's it
[249]
that's really a big percentage a big
[251]
chunk so I have this data here and of
[254]
course like always we need to look at it
[256]
in a visual form because spreadsheets
[258]
are boring even though they're
[259]
functional so if I switch over to
[261]
tableau I can do some cool stuff I'll
[263]
connect to Google sheets and I'll pull
[266]
the data in it already loaded it up it
[276]
classified everything correctly it looks
[278]
like let me just double check so
[280]
everything's a number pretty much yeah
[282]
looks good
[283]
let me go there and we can just kind of
[285]
see the trend here so we'll drag bill
[287]
period up and we'll change this down to
[289]
month so we have a monthly trend there
[291]
and I'll just drag the percent savings
[294]
on so you can kind of see how that goes
[296]
here is essentially the monthly percent
[301]
savings from having a Tesla plus you get
[306]
to drive a Tesla which is pretty awesome
[307]
right so you're saving close to 40
[309]
percent or 40 percent on average and
[311]
you're also you know doing something
[314]
good for the environment and all this
[315]
other great stuff so if you guys are
[317]
interested and more of this stuff I'm
[319]
