Free-range chickens form a part of the livestock industry
[4]
It might not be typical chicken we consume, it's still best to be aware of it because of the
[10]
health benefits that it contains unlike any other chickens
[14]
How is the free range chicken industry in the Philippines?
[18]
Let's all find out
[24]
Free range chickens are different from other chickens
[28]
because they are not housed in confined cages
[31]
Instead they arranged in open or outdoor fields and are fed with the
[36]
available resources in the farm
[39]
It's meat is low in cholesterol and safe to
[42]
consume for it doesn't contain antibiotics nor chemicals free-range
[46]
Free range chickens were introduced in the Philippines more than a decade ago
[50]
It is because of the alarming issue on several antibiotics given to chickens
[56]
Here in the Philippines it was first introduced by the late Mr Bobby Inocensio
[65]
of Teresa, Rizal way back in 1997
[68]
He was a contract grower of commercial chickens, and then
[77]
doing such, he saw that they were given a lot of
[81]
antibiotics, so he attended a livestock show in Bangkok Thailand and
[87]
and that's where he met this French company, Sasso, who introduced free-range chicken
[95]
They were imported here in he Philippines and was adapted
[100]
to our local native chicken set up
[103]
It developed commercially and
[106]
more farmers tried it by 1990s to early 2000s
[117]
Over the past years there has been an increase in the production of free-range
[122]
chickens because of the rising number of health conscious people in the country
[127]
Demand remains higher than the supply of free-range chickens in the Philippines
[133]
Volume has already been increasing when we started in 1997 with the late Boby Inocensio in Teresa Farm
[142]
We were only producing around three hundred chicks per week
[147]
but now it has grown to about 10 to 20 thousand a week production of different
[152]
farmers and different breeders, so the volume is vastly greater compared to before
[156]
Since we started - like Pamora Farm, we started in 2000
[162]
13 years after, we can say the development has been huge
[166]
From our production of 100 chickens per month, we are now at around 5,000 - 6,000 chickens per month
[176]
The health consciousness of the people today
[178]
to have a longer, productive life as well as their wellness
[184]
they now see, is connected to what you eat
[187]
Which is why the consumption of chicken
[189]
might affect the holistic health of person
[195]
A lot of Filipino consumers and foreign residents in the Philippines
[203]
are health conscious, and they are looking for a healthier
[207]
option of chicken
[215]
We only import a small volume of free range chickens and most
[218]
of these are breeders from France
[222]
We do import breeders
[224]
We don't have free range chicken breeders here in the Philippines
[229]
so it's coming all the way from France, where
[234]
the first stock we brought to the Philippines in 1997, originated from
[239]
And the majority of free-range chickens are locally produced
[243]
The great thing about this industry is that the players are Filipino
[248]
so it is Filipino farmers and consumers that benefit from the it
[255]
because majority of it is locally produced
[258]
There is great potential in exportation of our free range chickens
[263]
But our production is not yet sufficient
[267]
So our farmers right now are focused on local production
[272]
We used to export to Japan
[275]
The potential is definitely there
[277]
However, our production capacity does not
[282]
yet allow us to export outside the country
[286]
Although there in demand locally, Pamora Farm personally receives
[291]
demand from Hong Kong Japan and even Dubai
[295]
But perhaps let's focus first on our local consumption in our local market
[301]
In the future, why not?
[307]
Aside from the health-conscious the industry of free-range chickens tries to
[313]
penetrate a wider audience
[315]
Right now our market in the Philippines is Class A & B
[322]
But more, we can say, regular salary earners are allocating some budget for their health
[341]
The industry is growing and this includes the introduction of farm to home program
[349]
One thing we recommend to those are new to the business
[354]
is to have a farm to home program
[356]
What's that? It's to produce a small volume
[360]
introduce it to your family and communities, and start there
[366]
And from there you can see the potential of the market
[379]
Part of the success of your free range chicken business is good health status of your chickens
[384]
Find out the perfect vaccine for free range chickens
[393]
Living a healthy life is the best foot forward nowadays and an option for that
[398]
is going after free-range chickens
[401]
What do we need to know for a successful free range farm? Let's all find out
[418]
For the housing, the house has to be built on a flat area
[425]
It has to be shaded to minimize heat
[430]
It has to be elevated for better ventilation of each chicken
[438]
Use materials available in your area
[441]
like pawid and bamboo
[443]
Make sure it's near a source of water
[446]
for easier maintenance
[450]
Stress caused by loud highways must be avoided as well
[455]
Which is why it's important for the housing to be far from the highway
[459]
For the dimensions of your chicken housing - for 100 heads,
[464]
the approximate size is 100 square meters
[467]
the housing must have an ample amount of
[470]
space or allowance to avoid chickens from overcrowding and suffering from heatstroke
[476]
Assign a square 1 meter roaming area
[479]
with fences
[487]
Newborn chicks can be incubated with a grass brooder
[494]
charcoal brooder or incandescent bulb brooder
[497]
Incubate on the first day of hatching
[503]
up to 15-20 days old
[505]
Artificial incubators are used at night and also at dawn
[510]
It can also be used on stormy or chilly days to keep he chicks warm
[517]
Incubation period is 21 days
[525]
Feeding of free-range chickens is not a complicated process
[531]
Feed them in the morning and afternoon
[535]
Water is important, specially on hot days
[542]
The feeder to drinker ratio is important so that chicks can get enough both food & water
[549]
1 feeder is capable of feeding 20-25 chicks
[555]
1 drinker that is equal to 1/2 gallon can provide water to 10 chicks while
[560]
1 gallon is for 15-20 chicks
[564]
Once they reach maturity the feeder remains the same but the water dispenser changes
[571]
For chickens, palangganita is used
[575]
with grills to prevent them from diving in
[580]
Remember that there's a corresponding feed for every age
[586]
For 1-21 days old
[589]
they are fed chick booster
[591]
For 21-49 days old
[594]
they are fed chick starter
[596]
For the mature age of 50-84 days old
[600]
they are fed broiler finish o corn
[604]
Following the right way of feeding will help better and faster growth of our free range chickens
[617]
For better management of the housing, use materials available in your backyard
[624]
For odor free flooring, use ipa or carbonized ice hull,
[629]
straw, sawdust and sand
[634]
Earthworm manure is also used
[636]
to get rid of the odor on the flooring
[639]
Manure is soaked in water with muscovado sugar and rice bran for 24 hours
[646]
The microorganisms in earthworm manure that act as deodorizer
[652]
multiply to get rid of the odor from chicken manure
[655]
Monitor the housing - don't let the manure pile on too thick
[660]
to avoid odor and flies that might bring disease
[665]
For common diseases, use different vegetables and herbal medicine
[673]
Red chili and garlic serve as antibiotics
[678]
Oregano for respiratory problems
[681]
Ipil ipi as a natural laxative
[684]
and lemon grass as a detoxification agent
[688]
It is advisable to know the pests in your area prior to vaccination
[695]
Provide a daily record in your farm to monitor the condition of your chickens
[701]
It will be easier for the vet and the caretaker to identify if there's a problem
[707]
Each housing needs a foot well to prevent unsuspected germs and viruses
[713]
brought by people from outside
[717]
For vehicles, there must be a wheel bath located at the gate of the farm
[722]
Combine Zonrox and water for the foot and wheel bath
[728]
Taking care of free range chickens is easy specially if you have available resources in your area
[735]
Just remember the rule of thumb in taking care of free-range chickens
[740]
Keep everything clean and natural
[826]
Pamora Farm, the name itself is from my family name - Morados
[832]
and the family name of my husband, Papillon
[835]
so Pamora
[840]
while we started to raise free range chickens
[846]
this is my mom's hometown
[848]
so when we were little we vacationed a lot in Abra
[862]
We also try to adapt by using local materials
[865]
like pawid or kugon (cogon grass)
[868]
We saw to it that in developing the farm, we will not disrupt nature
[874]
Pamora farm started with 500 heads
[888]
The one thing for sure that proves Pamora is successful is behind me
[893]
our very own poultry dressing plant, one of a kind here in the Philippines
[899]
the only one with air dry chilling facility, its own blast freezer and cold storage
[906]
So I think I was able to be a successful farmer
[911]
Because what I, my family, friends and of course, the Filipino consumers
[918]
are coming from real farmers
[930]
We also only share what we discovered with free range chickens
[938]
We have a lot of Filipino-Chinese clients in Manila
[943]
They themselves share with us why they continue to choose Pamora free range chickens
[951]
over others - it's really because of the health benefits of our chicken
[963]
Like I said, Pamora Farm's tagline is
[974]
how free range chickens are grown
[977]
they roam, scratch the ground, eat grass
[1006]
In free ranging, chickens are allowed to roam to get natural resources for their growth
[1015]
But in free ranging, viruses and bacteria can't be completely prevented
[1020]
that might bring in diseases
[1022]
Today, we will find out how to avoid diseases
[1028]
with the Coryza vaccine
[1031]
With Coryza, we can fight off viruses and bacteria while keeping things natural
[1042]
The role of vaccines is preventive - so chickens can avoid coryza or fowl cholera
[1049]
so you can eventually avoid using antibiotics - thus, your chickens remain antibiotic free
[1054]
natural and organic
[1056]
It's important for chickens to be happy and healthy in free ranging
[1067]
Without vaccines your chicken will get colds
[1071]
It is contagious not just within your farm but across farms too
[1077]
It has great effect on your farming's economic value
[1081]
They have low appetite and some might die
[1085]
But we observed great difference upon usin Coryza vaccine
[1090]
because our chickens never get colds
[1093]
Allowing farmers to meet their requirements in meat and eggs
[1100]
without the hindrance of sickness
[1103]
Coryza should be part of an ordinary farmer's program, even small volume farms
[1110]
10 or 20
[1113]
it's important, especially for free range chickens or gamefowl
[1118]
A cold weakens their immune system
[1124]
Now it's not just the cold itself but a variety of diseases
[1130]
making it harder to recover later on
[1140]
With the use of it
