Low-budget GREEN SCREEN at home | What gives the best results? - YouTube

Channel: FXhome

[0]
i'm hopeful for this one i think that this could聽 work out pretty well hello and welcome i'm tom聽聽
[4]
from FXhome and today we're going to be looking聽 at the various ways that you can create your own聽聽
[8]
green screen green screens are a great asset for聽 filmmakers and whether you're just starting your聽聽
[12]
filmmaker journey or you're creating content on聽 youtube green screens are a great way to just聽聽
[16]
heighten the production value of your content聽 there are a couple ways that you can create your聽聽
[20]
own green screen but we've gone out we've gone the聽 most low budget popular options that are under $20聽聽
[26]
and we've got to test them out for you now聽 to see what gives the best chroma key for聽聽
[30]
the lowest budget now to keep this experiment fair聽 i'm going to be using the same lighting setup for聽聽
[34]
every single technique if you want to learn what聽 those techniques are we have a playlist available聽聽
[39]
right up here that has all of our tutorials on聽 green screen lighting speaking of fair if you聽聽
[44]
find this video helpful be sure to hit the聽 like button and subscribe to the channel if聽聽
[48]
you haven't already we're going to be kicking聽 off this experiment with craft paper this is a聽聽
[53]
free size green card craft paper don't know the聽 difference let me know this is 50 sheets worth聽聽
[60]
or about 6 to 10 dollars depending on where you go聽聽
[64]
i'm told i'm english this amount isn't going to聽 be able to cover the entire length of a room or聽聽
[70]
anything but for our setup right now i think it's聽 going to do a pretty good job so let's go for it
[78]
here we are with green screen number one i think聽 it works from the get-go it's not exactly the聽聽
[85]
prettiest setup that you could ever have you are聽 going to need a fair few in order to fill out聽聽
[90]
a large space i think i used the majority of my聽 sheets i only have a couple left layering up these聽聽
[95]
different sheets is definitely time consuming聽 and it's not going to last for long that tape聽聽
[100]
is probably going to give out at any moment one聽 of the most important things for a green screen聽聽
[104]
is keeping it consistent and smooth and you will聽 notice that there are overlapping periods you know聽聽
[109]
it's card it's going to bend it's going to move i聽 think we're going to face some issues but uh let's聽聽
[113]
see what this looks like when we chroma key it聽 over to you future tom thanks past me we're now in聽聽
[119]
HitFilm express and we're gonna look at how to do聽 this we're gonna be using the color difference key聽聽
[123]
so let's check this out by going into the keying聽 effects i'm selecting color difference key we'll聽聽
[129]
apply this on and automatically it's a bit of聽 a hazy result we're going to of course need to聽聽
[136]
adjust our settings so in order to see what i'm聽 doing i am going to enable view matte now in this聽聽
[142]
the black is the area that is being removed the聽 white is what is being left behind so you can聽聽
[147]
see that there is some detail being taken away聽 right now we need to heighten the minimum and聽聽
[153]
lower the max with any settings this is always聽 going to take some time to get the right result聽聽
[161]
after quite a lot of tweaking this is where we're聽 at right now the minimum and maximum values are聽聽
[167]
very very tight uh this is something that would聽 be a bit problematic if there were any wrinkles聽聽
[173]
or anything but at the moment this looks okay聽 we have some noise in this area but let's try聽聽
[180]
and neaten that out and i'll be going into the聽 mat enhancements and then apply a matte cleaner聽聽
[187]
all we're going to be doing here is聽 just smoothing this out a little bit聽聽
[191]
and then choking it in just to get rid of some聽 of that you can then smoothen this out as much聽聽
[197]
as you want but i think that's probably the聽 best result and finally a spill removal will聽聽
[202]
get rid of the green that we've subtracted聽 from me and if i go into the options tab and聽聽
[208]
then set this to checkable background you can see聽 that this is the area that we've now subtracted聽聽
[212]
which is a pretty good result we do have a little聽 bit of noise going on around the edges of my hair聽聽
[218]
and uh the edges of the frame but with a聽 touch more neatening around the edges with聽聽
[222]
a matte cleaning and a light wrap this is actually聽 given a really good result i'm very surprised by聽聽
[228]
what i'm seeing right now considering that this聽 is just from green card there's nothing special聽聽
[233]
or flashy about it it is just green paper perhaps聽 if we were traveling and needed to make something聽聽
[240]
for a of a suite or a zoom call perhaps i think聽 that this is definitely a easy go-to approach聽聽
[246]
it doesn't cost much but i would definitely say聽 that this is a one-time use you're not going to聽聽
[251]
be wanting this on your wall for very long our聽 next contestant is a plastic tablecloth this one聽聽
[256]
in particular was actually two dollars you can聽 obviously get them for various prices for under聽聽
[261]
ten dollars at various sizes and materials we're聽 gonna go with plastic for now because it's also聽聽
[266]
versatile waterproof and you'd be able to take聽 this around somewhere so let's see how this does
[274]
that was a lot easier than craft paper initial聽 reactions are this is actually pretty good聽聽
[279]
originally i was very concerned that it was going聽 to be too reflective probably cause a lot more聽聽
[283]
problems but this um this actually looks like it聽 could potentially be a winner if you crafted a pvc聽聽
[289]
stand you would be able to take this anywhere that聽 you wanted to it is incredibly thin and i did have聽聽
[294]
to double it up there are also a bunch of wrinkles聽 that you're not going to be able to remove聽聽
[299]
without fully tightening it and possibly tearing聽 it i'm hopeful for this one i think that this聽聽
[303]
could work out pretty well let's go over to post聽 production here we are with test number two and聽聽
[308]
again i am actually quite hopeful for how聽 this is going to turn out so once again聽聽
[311]
let's go to the color difference key聽 and see where we're getting view matte聽聽
[318]
and uh yeah that's actually giving us聽 a lot better results than what we had聽聽
[322]
with the paper so this has given a pretty decent聽 result though there is some detail going on around聽聽
[328]
here and especially around the edges which is from聽 the reflections that we had now to counter this聽聽
[333]
we can increase the max values to try and聽 get rid of some of that detail but you can聽聽
[339]
see that's coming out of my shoulders some of聽 those reflections have definitely stuck with us聽聽
[344]
and are now going to be brought into the footage聽 meaning that you'd have to eventually mask around聽聽
[349]
this it's not a huge problem given that it's only聽 this area but if this was in any other scenario聽聽
[354]
and moving around this could be problematic once聽 again this is given a really good result there's聽聽
[359]
a little bit of wobbling around the edges of my聽 frame but that's mainly to do with my hair what聽聽
[364]
we can do is bring that choke in and after giving聽 it a mask we have a pretty decent key once again聽聽
[370]
considering the price of it i'm very happy with聽 how this is turned out i think that this is great聽聽
[375]
the reflections are definitely something to聽 look out for this is incredibly effective i'm聽聽
[379]
very surprised of how good this has turned out we聽 have another material-based one now and this is聽聽
[384]
the form of cloth this is green cloth that was聽 intended to be some form of curtain but rather聽聽
[389]
than being a odd interior design choice we're聽 going to use it for a green screen this was the聽聽
[393]
more expensive of the options that we're going to聽 see today this was 12 dollars for about two meters
[403]
this is probably the most common聽 type of green screen to use i see聽聽
[406]
a lot of student films using this聽 type of material for green screen
[413]
as the heaviest material that we have used today聽 it is definitely a struggle to get it to stay聽聽
[420]
on the wall uh it is definitely the聽 type of material that would need聽聽
[424]
clips and a stand there's also a lot of creases聽 in here i don't know whether this material is聽聽
[430]
suitable to be ironed but um that would have to聽 definitely be the case in order to get rid of some聽聽
[434]
of those lines so i'm worried that there's going聽 to be an excessive amount of masking later when we聽聽
[439]
try and do our chroma so let's find out all right聽 curtain let's see if this was worth the hassle聽聽
[445]
you know the drill by now color difference key聽 view map find the right values adjust the gamma聽聽
[452]
apply mat cleaner for the edges smooth them out聽 choke them in then finish with a spill removal聽聽
[458]
at the moment we haven't found a bad one yet i am聽 concerned like the others don't there is a very聽聽
[462]
tight gap between the minimum and maximum values聽 if there were anything else going on in the scene聽聽
[467]
then i think that there could be problems but聽 for the moment this is really good everything聽聽
[472]
that we've seen so far has been effective which聽 is fantastic for our next one unfortunately i聽聽
[477]
can't do a time lapse of it because it would take聽 me far too long and probably get quite messy our聽聽
[482]
final method is green screen paint you can pick聽 up a can of green paint at any diy store you can聽聽
[488]
find them for about six dollars to 25 it depends聽 on what brand and also what size of the canvas聽聽
[494]
you are trying to fill if you're trying to do an聽 entire wall you're going to need more paint if聽聽
[497]
you're just doing a little area yeah not too bad聽 this is definitely an action for a more permanent聽聽
[502]
situation if you're doing regular content and聽 even trying to do stuff for a studio purpose do聽聽
[508]
make sure that you have the owner's permission to聽 start painting the wall before you start painting聽聽
[513]
other than the paint drying you're not going聽 to be facing too much turmoil when it comes聽聽
[517]
to actually coming here and setting up it is聽 incredibly smooth and easy to do i've just聽聽
[522]
walked over here set up my lights and i'm ready聽 to go no faffing with anything falling down聽聽
[528]
or being stuck to the wall this may seem like it's聽 the perfect option but there are a lot of cons聽聽
[533]
to it lighting a wall like this can be quite聽 difficult as you can see there is a bit of a聽聽
[536]
ven getting around me from where the light is i do聽 you need a couple of lights in order to fill this聽聽
[542]
and get an even lighting on the background on聽 the whole this is going to give you some great聽聽
[545]
results and also cut out all the maintenance work聽 so you only have to set it up to one time and it's聽聽
[550]
always going to be there what's important when聽 painting a green screen though is getting it nice聽聽
[554]
and smooth something that we've seen throughout聽 the other examples is if there's texture in there聽聽
[559]
that causes problems creases things like that聽 that's going to cause problems later when you're聽聽
[564]
keying it in post a nice smooth surface will聽 give you the best results every single time聽聽
[569]
but don't take my word for it let's see聽 what happens when we key this in post聽聽
[573]
all right paint this is going to be an聽 interesting one to see given that it's聽聽
[577]
not a material based green screen let's apply聽 color difference key and like before set the聽聽
[582]
view map so we can see what we're up to there's聽 a lot going on in there so let's bring this down聽聽
[589]
move that up clean up those edges choke it in聽 spill remove and once again here we are with聽聽
[596]
another working green screen that means every聽 single green screen that we've tried out today聽聽
[600]
has been effective meaning that no matter聽 what budget you're working with you have the聽聽
[604]
ability to get a green screen and craft one聽 of your own whether this is going to be for聽聽
[608]
youtube streaming films you have the ability聽 and tools to create your own green screen聽聽
[613]
that's right we've tricked you into learning聽 that anything is possible and i think that's聽聽
[617]
a lesson that we can all enjoy what's more聽 likely is that no matter what the material聽聽
[621]
as long as a green screen is lit right and used聽 correctly you can get some fantastic results聽聽
[627]
so get creating well that's it for our diy green聽 screens i really do hope that you found this聽聽
[631]
helpful but let me ask you which ones are you聽 gonna try out for yourself let us know in the聽聽
