Channel: unknown

[Music]
[2]
in february the new york times produced
[4]
a documentary called
[5]
framing britney spears the film is an
[8]
often painful look behind the curtain
[10]
of the pop superstar's life in the
[12]
spotlight
[13]
including her last 13 years under the
[16]
legal control of her father
[18]
this week spirits was in a courtroom
[20]
describing in shocking detail her life
[22]
under that conservatorship leaving many
[25]
to wonder how someone so rich
[27]
famous and powerful could end up there
[30]
nbc's erin mclaughlin explains
[32]
in our sunday focus
[36]
she's the superstar who is fascinated
[39]
and stirred controversy
[41]
ever since she danced onto the global
[43]
stage at just
[44]
16 years old her music helped shape a
[47]
generation
[49]
now 39 years old her testimony this week
[52]
before an la court is being seen as a
[54]
different kind of defining moment
[56]
britney lifting the veil of secrecy that
[58]
surrounded her life for the last 13
[61]
years
[61]
lashing out at her father and the other
[63]
conservatives who've managed her care
[65]
and finances
[66]
calling them threatening and abusive
[69]
i've lied and told the whole world i'm
[71]
happy because
[72]
i've been in denial i am traumatized i
[74]
can't sleep
[75]
i'm so angry i cry every day i was
[79]
surprised by how unedited she was
[82]
i was surprised that she decided to take
[85]
on
[86]
the entire conservatorship and in fact
[88]
the conservatorship
[89]
system in the state of california
[91]
instead of just
[92]
directing her attention to her most
[95]
immediate issue which is getting her
[97]
father
[98]
off of this conservatorship after
[100]
britney's public breakdown
[101]
a court ordered the conservatorship in
[103]
2008 when it was clear the superstar was
[106]
spiraling out of control
[107]
with seemingly her every move snapped by
[110]
paparazzi
[111]
and scrutinized it was later revealed
[114]
she'd been placed in two involuntary
[116]
psychiatric holds
[117]
although the exact nature of her
[119]
breakdown and ongoing issues remains
[121]
concealed by the court
[123]
only one person really stepped up and
[126]
decided that he was going to care for
[128]
her and take care of the situation and
[130]
that was jamie
[131]
while state law says conservatorship is
[133]
justified for a person
[134]
whose mental capacity is severely
[136]
diminished and are
[138]
unable to meet their basic needs under
[140]
jamie's control
[142]
brittany went back to work she released
[144]
several albums
[145]
starred in a national tv show and
[147]
performed in a hit las vegas residency
[150]
amassing a 60 million dollar fortune all
[153]
the while longing for the
[154]
conservatorship
[156]
to be over she's wanted to get out of it
[158]
for quite some time
[159]
in her testimony britney said her father
[161]
forced her to tour
[162]
against her will and when she complained
[164]
she was put
[165]
on lithium a powerful psychiatric drug
[168]
he loved the control to hurt his own
[170]
daughter a hundred thousand percent
[173]
he loved it through his attorney jamie
[175]
spears says he's sorry to see his
[177]
daughter suffering
[178]
and in so much pain adding that he loves
[180]
and misses her
[181]
very much the pop star also said her
[184]
conservators
[185]
won't let her get married or have more
[187]
children preventing her from removing an
[190]
i.u.d
[195]
intimate details that stunned the world
[197]
and outraged her most ardent fans
[200]
revitalizing the free brittany movement
[203]
and this was clearly emotional testimony
[206]
will that sway the judge well i'm not
[208]
sure it's going to sway the judge
[211]
but i do think that was probably one of
[213]
the most painful moments
[215]
because she essentially said she has
[218]
built this
[219]
empire that so many are living off of
[223]
and that these are she feels her jailers
[226]
that are living off of her money
[230]
and aaron joins me now erin good morning
[232]
it's good to see you so i guess the
[234]
bottom line for a lot of people on this
[235]
story is
[236]
why has it been so difficult for
[238]
brittany to walk away from this
[240]
arrangement
[241]
good morning willie well legal experts
[244]
say that it's extraordinarily difficult
[247]
to end a conservatorship
[248]
in the state of california and they
[250]
point to britney spears's case
[252]
as a prime example and that's because
[255]
normally what leads to a conservatorship
[257]
is some sort of underlying condition
[260]
that can't resolve itself
[261]
such as dementia or alzheimer's now we
[264]
do not know
[265]
what has led to britney's
[267]
conservatorship that remains
[268]
under seal by the court it is
[271]
interesting to note that her lawyer has
[273]
not filed a petition with the court
[275]
to end the conservatorship which would
[277]
be the first step in a lengthy
[279]
legal process willie we'll see after 13
[283]
years now if this ends the details have
[285]
just been stunning so fascinating erin
