How to SAFELY Start a Candle Business- Insurance and Safety Tips - YouTube

Channel: Tiana Coats

[0]
hello everyone welcome to my super
[2]
impromptu video
[4]
at i think it's 10 p.m right now 9 15
[7]
p.m so today i've got
[11]
my coffee and i've got my notes
[14]
and i've got something to say
[17]
so obviously by the title and thumbnail
[20]
we are going to be talking about
[21]
candle safety especially for you know
[25]
candle businesses a lot of people are
[27]
starting to handle businesses i don't
[28]
know if it's a pandemic i don't know
[30]
what it is
[31]
but i've been scrolling like the past
[34]
week or so i've been scrolling through
[35]
my youtube and i keep getting
[37]
recommended like
[38]
new candle people that i've never seen
[40]
before on the platform like new people
[41]
doing
[42]
candle business videos candle tutorials
[45]
and all of that stuff
[46]
and i think it's great that people are
[48]
starting their businesses and
[50]
you know trying to work for themselves i
[52]
think that's super amazing but i think
[54]
it's
[54]
um we need to say something about candle
[57]
safety
[58]
insurance testing candles burning
[61]
candles and the risk that comes with
[63]
selling candles so that is what i'm
[66]
going to talk about
[67]
today in this video so i've got my
[70]
notebook here so
[71]
i'm gonna be reading off of this
[72]
notebook but you guys know i've been
[74]
making candles
[75]
since 2015 and the testing process is
[78]
like
[79]
testing these candles takes a very long
[82]
time to like get the formula right
[84]
get you know the wick right and
[86]
everything like that it's a constant
[88]
test i'm always like
[89]
still testing um my current product even
[92]
though
[93]
you know it's been out for a while it's
[94]
still gone through some changes and
[96]
stuff like that
[97]
so with that said you know when you
[99]
start a candle business
[100]
you are running the risk of somebody
[102]
catching their house on fire
[104]
or some type of candle accident even the
[107]
big candle businesses have had this
[109]
happen to them
[110]
i actually was scrolling through tick
[112]
tock recently and i saw
[113]
this video and i think it was a bath and
[115]
body works candle that was totally
[118]
like engulfed in flames in somebody's
[121]
bathroom
[122]
and they also like threw water on this
[125]
candle which is a big no-no you smother
[127]
candle fires
[128]
and if you take a closer look at the
[130]
candle
[131]
in on the toilet you can tell that this
[133]
person doesn't trim their wicks
[135]
and let me tell you the average candle
[137]
burner does not trim
[139]
their wicks even though we put our
[141]
warning
[142]
labels on and and for me i even put it
[145]
inside the box too so that they can see
[148]
it but people still
[149]
do not trim their wicks so that is a
[151]
very common thing that happens
[153]
with candle consumers and let me tell
[155]
you what happens when you don't trim a
[157]
wick especially with double or triple
[159]
wicks
[160]
it actually increases the chances of
[162]
something like this happening
[164]
where the candle can catch on fire so
[168]
what happens is as the wick gets longer
[171]
i mean that's just a whole bunch of
[173]
carbon buildup and
[174]
it's just going to create bigger and
[176]
bigger flames and let's say the candle
[178]
is you know halfway burned and you have
[181]
these huge
[181]
flames inside of the candle especially
[184]
with paraffin candles you can actually
[187]
ignite the whole candle and it just golf
[189]
engulfs in flames
[191]
and i really think that's what happened
[193]
in that video so if you plan
[195]
on having a candle business and if you
[198]
plan
[198]
on expanding and growing and selling
[200]
tons of candles
[202]
it is probably inevitable that you are
[204]
going to run into
[205]
to an accident like this where someone
[207]
is going to have a
[209]
candle engulfed in flames and you know
[212]
god forbid they're not watching their
[213]
candle and something happens to their
[216]
home and it damages
[217]
their property or something like that
[220]
the more candles you sell
[221]
the higher of a chance you have of this
[223]
happening
[224]
so how do you protect yourself and your
[226]
business you need candle insurance and i
[228]
think a lot of people may be confused on
[231]
what candle insurance is or the proper
[233]
candle insurance to have
[235]
so this is something that i talk about
[237]
in my online course but i definitely
[239]
think this needs to be public
[240]
information if people are going to be
[242]
like selling candles and stuff
[244]
but i grabbed a snapshot of the soap
[246]
makers guild and this is just one
[248]
company that offers
[249]
product liability insurance now if you
[251]
look at this
[253]
little snippet of their insurance and
[256]
explanation of insurance
[257]
general liability insurance does not
[259]
cover
[260]
if your candle burns up somebody's home
[263]
so
[263]
general liability insurance is like say
[266]
you're on google and you type in
[268]
candle insurance you may get a whole
[270]
bunch of companies
[272]
that have that say they cover candles um
[274]
but it's general liability insurance
[277]
now that is something you could
[278]
potentially have like there's nothing
[280]
wrong with having general liability it
[282]
could be something you use
[284]
when you attend a craft show so
[286]
basically if you attend a craft show and
[288]
you have a booth up
[290]
you would want general liability
[292]
insurance in case somebody trips over
[294]
you know a extension cord in your booth
[296]
and falls and hurts themselves that's
[298]
what general liability insurance is
[300]
it does not cover if this candle goes to
[303]
somebody's house and it burns somebody's
[305]
house because of like negligence or
[307]
something
[308]
so that's why you need product liability
[310]
insurance
[311]
anything like that now if your home your
[313]
home may be a different situation so you
[315]
might have to
[316]
get with you know your mortgage or
[319]
whatever to make sure that you are
[321]
covered
[322]
for your home since you're making you
[324]
know your your products in your home
[326]
in case something happens while you're
[328]
making your products that may be a
[329]
different story
[330]
so as far as covering this candle when
[333]
it goes to the customer's house when it
[335]
ships
[336]
you need product liability insurance and
[338]
if you look on the soap makers guild
[340]
it tells you general liability insurance
[342]
covers costs when someone gets hurt on
[344]
your property um or like you know for
[347]
example in your craft booth
[349]
and then product liability insurance
[352]
covers you know when someone claims
[353]
there is harm or injury from the use of
[356]
your
[356]
products now because this product is
[358]
meant to catch on fire there are not
[360]
many companies
[362]
that come that give product liability
[364]
insurance to candle makers
[365]
now soap makers guild has this and it
[368]
also i believe covers if you make
[370]
soap obviously so if you do soap or
[372]
candles
[373]
it covers this and also indie business
[375]
network has
[376]
product liability insurance for your
[378]
candles now these
[380]
two places are memberships so you have
[383]
to
[384]
join their membership and then you are
[386]
able to buy the product liability
[387]
insurance
[388]
now i joined indie business network and
[391]
it was about
[392]
500 something for the whole year after i
[395]
joined their program
[396]
and bought the product liability
[398]
insurance so i'm a part of a wholesale
[401]
like uh website called range.me and he
[404]
even asked me like we had a call the
[406]
other day he was like do you have your
[407]
product liability insurance like
[409]
when you get your products and when this
[411]
product let's say walmart wants to put
[413]
this product on your shelf
[415]
you need product liability insurance on
[417]
your products
[418]
so that's you know it's definitely a
[420]
must for your candles
[422]
general liability is something that you
[424]
can buy if you go to a craft show or do
[426]
some little in person
[427]
you know selling there are companies
[430]
that do offer
[431]
general liability but i'm so tongue died
[434]
there are companies that offer general
[436]
liability
[437]
um that have like day by day plans so if
[439]
you just need for the day
[441]
or for a week or whatever you can do
[443]
that too
[444]
so that covers insurance just be aware
[446]
of what kind of insurance you're buying
[448]
when you sign up for an insurance
[450]
plan so of course you know a lot of
[452]
people i have seen people say well i
[454]
have warning labels do i really need
[456]
insurance warning labels do not do
[458]
anything
[459]
for you when someone takes you to court
[461]
okay
[462]
you're not going to say well i put a
[463]
warning label on it you know that's not
[466]
that's not going to cut it you need if
[468]
someone ever takes you to court for a
[470]
candle
[470]
you're going to need to cover all sorts
[472]
of costs and
[474]
this is not going to do anything for you
[477]
so you of course always need to put the
[480]
warning label but you need
[482]
insurance if you do plan on selling
[485]
these candles
[486]
you know online or wherever now also
[489]
touching on insurance i see a lot of
[491]
people putting different things in their
[493]
candles be aware of what you put in your
[495]
candle i like to say any
[496]
decoration that you put in your candle
[498]
is just another liability so
[500]
be aware so on my candles these are just
[504]
wax
[504]
strawberries i've seen people put all
[506]
sorts of
[507]
different things like plastic straws
[509]
i've seen people put metal spoons in the
[512]
candles and i know that
[514]
you may instruct the customer you have
[516]
to take the thing out before you burn it
[518]
but again a lot of people don't read
[520]
they may leave it in there
[522]
they don't know the risk of leaving it
[524]
in there so
[525]
be aware that when you put stuff like
[527]
that into the candle
[529]
that's just kind of another liability
[531]
putting herbs and crystals into a candle
[534]
you can do that but you have to purchase
[536]
additional insurance
[537]
i know i have seen a ton of people with
[540]
urban crystal candles and that's fine
[542]
but make sure
[543]
that of course you are testing the
[544]
candle making sure
[546]
it burns safely and purchasing
[548]
additional insurance to cover
[551]
you know the herbs and crystals in the
[552]
candle so
[554]
running this candle business i just know
[556]
that people
[557]
do not trim their wick as they should so
[560]
when you're testing your candle just
[562]
test it
[562]
as if you know burn it for several hours
[565]
at a time
[566]
or you know test it to make sure that
[568]
even if the candle stays lit for eight
[570]
to ten hours
[571]
that it's not going to totally engulf
[573]
inflame and i know that it's not your
[575]
responsibility
[576]
even though we do put the warnings we do
[578]
tell people do not burn these candles
[579]
for more than four hours
[581]
trim the wick just in case they do abuse
[584]
the candle
[585]
make sure that you are testing the
[586]
candles to to make sure it doesn't go
[588]
too crazy
[590]
i know people will still have lots of
[591]
soot on their walls you'll see
[593]
you'll walk into places and there's like
[595]
a big like line of soot where the candle
[597]
was
[600]
you can't really prevent this from
[602]
happening you can just try
[604]
your hardest to make sure the candle
[606]
burns nice and slow
[608]
so i know you can't once you hand this
[610]
over to somebody
[611]
it's up to them to light the candle
[613]
appropriately
[614]
and burn it for four hours but in
[616]
reality a lot of people don't
[618]
do that so try your hardest to make sure
[619]
the candle is safe
[621]
so another thing when you are you know
[623]
mixing
[624]
your candle up if you see a pool of oil
[626]
on top of the candle or a pool of
[628]
you know droplets of oil after the
[631]
candle has
[632]
you know rested that's fragrance oil and
[634]
that it can be flammable
[636]
i think i saw a comment on a youtube
[638]
video where someone said they had like
[639]
these pools of oil
[641]
but they really like scent throw so they
[643]
didn't mind the pools of oil
[645]
you do know the pools of oil are
[646]
flammable so that is why
[648]
the bottles have flash points on them
[651]
the flash points have nothing to do with
[653]
you mixing the candle at a certain
[655]
temperature
[656]
the flash points are the temperature
[657]
that oil catches on fire so if the flash
[660]
point let me pull something here
[662]
so for example the flash point on this
[664]
peach nectar candle is 212 so at 212
[667]
degrees
[668]
this oil standalone can catch on fire so
[671]
that's pretty much what the flash point
[673]
is so imagine if you have a double wick
[676]
candle
[676]
and you have mixed the candle wrong to
[678]
where there's a pool of oil
[680]
on top and your candle reaches 250
[683]
degrees
[684]
or you know with that pool of oil on top
[686]
then that can potentially
[688]
that oil can catch on fire so that is
[690]
what the flash point is
[692]
when you're making the candle just make
[694]
sure that everything's incorporated and
[696]
there's no
[697]
oils leaking out of the candle that
[699]
means there's too much oil you need to
[701]
dial it back or
[702]
add some type of additive to your wax so
[705]
that you don't get pools of oil
[707]
on the candle okay so
[710]
that was kind of my little thing that i
[713]
wanted to say
[714]
hopefully it helped you guys out there
[716]
if you were wondering how you can safely
[718]
start your candle business
[719]
i would just hate for you know someone
[721]
to start a candle business who's very
[723]
happy very excited they see all the
[725]
candle videos they see everyone's
[726]
creations
[727]
and then you don't get all of the
[729]
information that you need
[730]
to safely start your candle business so
[732]
i hope that helped you out if you have
[734]
any questions about anything i said
[737]
please leave a comment down below and
[739]
i'll try to get to it
[740]
but thank you guys for tuning in and i
[742]
will see you guys
[743]
on the next one bye
