Panasonic Ending In-House TV Production, But Will Still Sell OLED TVs in 2022 - YouTube
Channel: HDTVTest
[0]
when news first broke this week that panasonic is聽
ending its in-house tv production my heart sank聽聽
[6]
i was like oh no i don't really want to write a聽
similar article to the one i wrote back in 2013聽聽
[12]
when panasonic ended its plasma tv manufacturing聽
nor do i want to make a similar video to when oppo聽聽
[19]
pulled out from the 4k blu-ray market so i quickly聽
and frantically fired an email across to my聽聽
[25]
contacts at panasonic and asked them two questions聽
one are they outsourcing their tv production to聽聽
[33]
tcl which is obviously one of the biggest tv聽
manufacturing company in the world and secondly聽聽
[39]
whether we will see new panasonic oled tvs in 2022聽
and the reason why i specifically asked these two聽聽
[47]
questions is because back in may earlier this year聽
a nikkei report from japan has linked panasonic to聽聽
[54]
tcl in the sense that panasonic is seriously聽
considering ending its in-house tv production聽聽
[61]
and outsourcing its tv manufacturing to a third聽
party and that third party happened to be tcl聽聽
[68]
now tcl is well known for being one of the biggest聽
tv makers in the world but they do not make oled聽聽
[75]
tvs which is why i was worried for a moment there聽
that you know if let's say tcl took over the聽聽
[82]
manufacturing of tvs from panasonic then we won't聽
see a panasonic ole anymore because currently tcl聽聽
[89]
i don't think has oled on their books in terms聽
of tv manufacturing they are doing some r d in聽聽
[95]
printed oled but you know that is going to be聽
a few years away maybe in 2025 before it goes聽聽
[102]
online so from that point of view hopefully you聽
can understand my two questions to panasonic and聽聽
[108]
the answer that i received from them is extremely聽
reassuring so first of all they said that they聽聽
[113]
cannot disclose the partner they have actually聽
outsourced the tv manufacturing to because of聽聽
[119]
reasons but reassuringly i note in their statement聽
that the partner will still be producing oled tvs聽聽
[128]
as well so that is very reassuring and this聽
leads on to the answer to the second question聽聽
[132]
panasonic will still carry on with the oled tv聽
business and we will still see new panasonic聽聽
[139]
oleds you know in 2022 and in fact they are聽
planning to make an appearance at ces 3022 already聽聽
[146]
so that is extremely reassuring to me and i'm very聽
happy and i think the phrase of the day as far聽聽
[152]
as panasonic is concerned is that you know it is聽
business as usual so it is only the manufacturing聽聽
[158]
of the tvs that have been outsourced to a third聽
party and the in-house development in terms of聽聽
[166]
the r d it will still be performed by japan and聽
also at their base in germany and together they聽聽
[173]
hope to be more competitive in the tv market聽
and maybe even become profitable because you can聽聽
[180]
understand how cutthroat the tv market is聽
especially with aggressive pricing from east聽聽
[186]
asia so i'm very happy that panasonic is still聽
in the game you know we can still buy panasonic聽聽
[192]
tvs and i think you know for those of you who are聽
not familiar with panasonic tvs especially in the聽聽
[198]
states because you know panasonic no longer sell聽
televisions in the states and therefore panasonic聽聽
[203]
tvs do not actually get as much coverage from聽
youtube channels you know across the pond and so聽聽
[209]
it falls to me your friendly neighborhood youtuber聽
with a mancunian accent to try and tell you why i聽聽
[216]
really rate panasonic tvs especially they are oled聽
tvs so i think you know compared with other oled聽聽
[223]
brands on the market they have the best out of the聽
box accuracy not only in terms of color accuracy聽聽
[229]
but also in terms of the neo-black gamma tracking聽
so in turtle one i've mentioned this before but聽聽
[236]
lg oleds tend to crush some shadow detail because聽
they darken their near-black gamma to try and hide聽聽
[244]
some of the neo-black prominence overshoot issues聽
that have been present on wrgb oleds since 2018聽聽
[252]
and also sony oleds tend to brighten the nearby聽
gamma some of you prefer it you know because聽聽
[258]
maybe you claim that it is brighter you don't聽
get as much artifacts and it is cleaner and less聽聽
[272]
are are the best out of the box really you know聽
in terms of the gamma tracking and in terms of the聽聽
[277]
correct delineation of shadow detail both in terms聽
of the clarity and also in terms of the luminance聽聽
[284]
so it is not too bright it is not too dark聽
you get just the right amount of shadow detail聽聽
[288]
and some of you without having the benefit聽
of looking at a reference monitor may prefer聽聽
[295]
shadow detail to be brighter but again i stress聽
that not all shadow detail are meant to be seen聽聽
[300]
so we always need to refer to a reference monitor聽
to see how much shadow detail exactly needs to be聽聽
[307]
visible and that is where i think you know out聽
of the box especially panasonic has an advantage聽聽
[312]
over its rivals in the oled tv market and i'm聽
always struck by just how cinematic the image聽聽
[320]
look even before calibration obviously calibration聽
can improve it and bring it to the next level but聽聽
[326]
even before calibration i think the internal 3d聽
lut that they have actually put into these tvs聽聽
[331]
you know it's just superb and the colors just look聽
so natural with like truly realistic skin tones聽聽
[339]
and they've partnered with some of the leading聽
colorists in the world including stefan sonnenfeld聽聽
[345]
and you know mike sowa and other prominent聽
calories over the years to try and tune the聽聽
[351]
colors to a truly cinematic level and i think that聽
even though many other tvs obviously you know you聽聽
[359]
can calibrate them to reach a similar level but聽
out of the box i don't think you know you can beat聽聽
[364]
the naturalness of a panasonic oled and of course聽
i think you know panasonic engineers when i look聽聽
[370]
at the picture menu i am always struck by just聽
how much attention to detail they have actually聽聽
[375]
put into their tvs and you know the finesse and聽
the engineering that they've actually put in there聽聽
[382]
it's just you know mind-blowing to me i've聽
never seen so many settings before there聽聽
[386]
are more settings there than in microsoft聽
flight simulator and that's saying something聽聽
[391]
and for a video enthusiast i think you know the聽
fact that panasonic is still around producing high聽聽
[397]
quality televisions especially oled televisions聽
you know it is always very heartwarming to me and聽聽
[404]
i need to obviously talk about their led lcds聽
because i think some of you asked me whether聽聽
[409]
it is worth buying panasonic led lcds i think聽
that drastically at this moment in time i don't聽聽
[415]
think many of the tv brands who are invested in聽
oled will be willing to invest much effort into聽聽
[423]
led lcds because you know it is just not cost聽
effective especially with the prices of oled聽聽
[429]
panels from lg display coming down after they聽
ramp up their production in guangzhou factory聽聽
[434]
so i've said this before and i'll say this again聽
when you try to make an led lcd that is you know聽聽
[441]
competitive in picture quality to all that and聽
bear in mind that oled has superior viewing angles聽聽
[446]
superior contrast superior colors in terms of the聽
vibrance because of the self-emissive properties聽聽
[454]
of its you know oled pixels then i think it聽
is very hard for an led lcd to compete without聽聽
[461]
substantial number of local dimming zones and when聽
you increase the number of local dimming zones聽聽
[467]
you know the costs just go up and if you try to聽
put in a quantum dot enhancement film or some sort聽聽
[474]
of quantum dot technology to boost the wide color聽
gamut again the cost would go up at the end of the聽聽
[479]
day you might as well just buy an oled panel of聽
lg display and you know make more profit that way聽聽
[486]
and you know the more full aerial dimming zones聽
that you put in you know the thickness will go up聽聽
[491]
the heat will go up and the power consumption聽
will go up and at the end of the day i think聽聽
[497]
you know the oled solution is just very elegant聽
in the sense that from the tv manufacturer point聽聽
[504]
of view they can just buy the panels either聽
open sell or you know in a finished product聽聽
[510]
and then you know sell it you know at a profit and聽
we have to bear in mind that all these companies聽聽
[515]
they are in this game to make money you know not聽
many people not many manufacturers are like me聽聽
[520]
you know truly altruistic you know um聽
giving free advice on youtube and stuff聽聽
[525]
and of course you know i will have to reserve聽
judgement until i get next year's tvs in from聽聽
[533]
panasonic and see whether there is similar picture聽
quality or there's a drop in picture quality or聽聽
[538]
even build quality but until then even now if聽
you ask me will i still recommend panasonic tvs聽聽
[545]
yes definitely i would still recommend panasonic聽
tvs for the reasons i've mentioned earlier and聽聽
[552]
if you ask me will i buy a panasonic tv yes in聽
the heartbeat you know if they make a bigger size聽聽
[558]
oled and i think you know with this outsourcing to聽
a third party maybe there's a slight chance even聽聽
[565]
that you know we may see 77-inch oled tvs from聽
panasonic but you know i don't think you know聽聽
[571]
the chances are high but you know we can always聽
hope we can always hope and this year panasonic聽聽
[576]
oled actually faced the stiffest competition聽
it has ever faced you know in the form of the聽聽
[581]
new evo panels from lg g1 and also the sony a90j聽
and i'm pleased to say that we will be holding a聽聽
[591]
shootout event but you know it won't be a public聽
event because of the pandemic we couldn't really聽聽
[597]
secure a venue to hold it in a public manner聽
but besides myself there may be a couple of聽聽
[604]
other calibrators who will vote on these tvs which聽
will be masked so it will be a blinded shootout so聽聽
[613]
that we don't let any brand buyers creep into our聽
judgment and provisionally currently there will be聽聽
[619]
the panasonic jz2000 that will be the sony a 90j聽
that will be the lg g1 there will be the samsung聽聽
[626]
qn95aao and we generally hope that we can receive聽
stock of the philips oled plus naturally six聽聽
[633]
in time to complete the shootout lineup but聽
hopefully you know it will be an interesting event聽聽
[638]
and you will find it helpful we also hope to get聽
our hands on a reference broadcast monitor to help聽聽
[644]
us judge color accuracy and also shadow detailing聽
on these tvs participating in the shootout聽聽
[650]
the date has provisionally been聽
set on sunday the 14th of november聽聽
[655]
and i'm really excited about this year's lineup聽
and may the best tv win in the meantime if you聽聽
