How to Frame and Pour a Small Concrete Slab | DIY - YouTube

Channel: unknown

[4]
okay I am moving forward with my dust
[6]
collection I want to house it outside of
[9]
my shop in a like a little lean-to
[11]
building so the first thing that I'm
[12]
going to be doing is pouring a concrete
[14]
small little foundation for it I've
[17]
never done anything like this before but
[18]
I have try to gather as much information
[20]
on the subject as possible so now not
[23]
the point where I'm just going to jump
[24]
in and take it on so let's get going
[28]
this is the area that I'll be working
[30]
with so I started by cutting down the
[32]
tree that was in my way and then
[33]
removing the existing slab I made some
[38]
steaks from scraps and then marked off
[40]
the area that I wanted to slap to be I
[42]
ended up making mine sixty by four feet
[44]
I tried to excavate using a shovel
[47]
quickly realized it wasn't going to work
[48]
so then I moved to a grubbing hoe and
[51]
what I would do is just rough up the
[52]
surface a little bit then come back with
[55]
the shovel and remove all of the dirt I
[57]
loosened up then repeat the process soon
[63]
a ledge is formed and then it's really
[65]
easy to come back and just chip away
[66]
with a grubbing hoe a buddy stopped by
[70]
wanting to drink a beer and I asked him
[72]
how he felt about digging a hole instead
[74]
this definitely went a lot faster with
[77]
two people overall I was aiming for six
[83]
inches the next morning I grabbed some
[86]
two by fours and cut them to size using
[88]
my circular saw then I put them in place
[90]
and screwed them together definitely
[92]
making sure that they were level before
[94]
moving forward now I didn't see the
[100]
sense on buying stakes so I just made my
[102]
own with subscripts and cutting a
[104]
45-degree angle I would set them about
[107]
every two feet and then just hammer them
[109]
in about two inches into the ground
[111]
checking for level several times along
[113]
the way I used a total of five bags of
[118]
all purpose sand I would cut open all
[120]
the bags and then pour them out and then
[121]
just use my hands really to spread it
[124]
all around trying to make it as level as
[125]
possible
[131]
next I grabbed a water hose and what the
[133]
whole thing down before moving on to the
[135]
rebar I chose to purchase links of rebar
[138]
so that I wouldn't have to cut any so
[140]
I'm using two pieces to overlap to make
[142]
up the length needed then I just grabbed
[144]
some baling wire and tied all six joints
[147]
together I first formed a loop and then
[151]
put that loop underneath the joint then
[153]
I would feed the loosen through the loop
[155]
grab it with my pliers at the very base
[157]
and form a twist about two or three I
[160]
cut the loose ends off with the side
[162]
cutters and hammered the ends down I
[169]
sent it the rebar where I wanted it and
[172]
then use some rebar highchairs to
[174]
elevate it these hold up the rebar so
[178]
that it'll actually be in the center of
[179]
the slab instead of that at the very
[181]
bottom and now to add concrete
[194]
I got a system down where I would add
[196]
roughly two gallons of water then add
[198]
two bags of concrete I'd let that mix
[201]
just for a few seconds and I didn't a
[203]
few more cups of water and then a third
[205]
bag of concrete I would watch the
[207]
mixture to make sure that the ratio was
[209]
good while I was refilling my bucket for
[212]
the next round now I'm not that strong
[214]
and these bags are heavy so it split it
[217]
down the middle on the top side of the
[218]
bag then just hold it in place while
[220]
it's slowly poured out the cement would
[226]
kind of stick to the bottom of the mixer
[228]
so I grabbed his scrap and just kind of
[230]
scraped it off every once in a while
[231]
after a few minutes of letting it mix I
[233]
would just pour it into place it would
[236]
have been easier if I would have put
[238]
plywood around the perimeter so I could
[240]
pour it from multiple points but I
[242]
didn't so I always poured it from over
[244]
here and then I just grabbed a hoe or
[247]
rake and shoved it around I was close to
[253]
the end when my husband and buddy showed
[255]
up and they were pretty impressed it
[259]
took 20 sacks of concrete total and I
[261]
would be mixing three bags in each batch
[263]
it's a very fast-moving process and once
[266]
you get started it's just kind of a
[267]
go-go-go sort of thing
[271]
I should have done this earlier but I
[283]
grabbed a sawzall and cut off all of
[285]
those pegs flush so that we could come
[288]
back and screed it which is moving a 2x4
[291]
across the top and a sawing motion and
[293]
the still send all of the voids as well
[296]
as smoothes out the surface he did
[298]
either three or four passes total while
[302]
this is drying I want to talk to you
[304]
about this video sponsor lynda.com/diy
[307]
nearing platform with over 3000 video
[310]
courses if you go to lynda.com slash
[312]
April then you'll receive a free 10-day
[314]
trial there are courses not just classes
[316]
but entire courses on subjects like
[319]
business photography design just to name
[322]
a few
[322]
now I'm a youtuber and so of course I'm
[325]
a big advocate of free information
[326]
however sometimes when you want to learn
[328]
something very specific it can be
[330]
difficult to find a YouTube channel that
[332]
covers the subject very thoroughly and
[334]
accurately you don't have to worry about
[336]
that with Lynda because all classes are
[338]
taught by professionals at the end of
[340]
the day you just never want to stop
[342]
learning and lynda.com is a great
[344]
resource where you pay one flat fee and
[346]
get access to thousands of videos so
[349]
again go to lynda.com slash April
[352]
everything I read said wait until the
[355]
surface lost its Sheen before you come
[357]
back and trial however I waited a little
[359]
bit too long and if there wasn't enough
[362]
moisture to make the surface smooth any
[364]
longer but I still did it and I also
[366]
came back with a hand edger to round
[369]
over the edges after letting it sit for
[371]
a day I came back and removed the forms
[373]
you can use a hammer to kind of loosen
[375]
them up so I definitely waited too long
[380]
to come back and trawl the surface so
[382]
the surface of this is not nice and
[384]
smooth like I wish it was but women
[386]
learn for my first experience with
[388]
concrete I think that it went alright
[390]
and the slab is definitely going to do
[392]
exactly what I needed to do now check
[394]
out Welker news.com if you do want more
[396]
details on the
[398]
and also in the description of the video
[400]
I have left you links to the different
[401]
items that I use during this project so
[404]
check that out as well and that's it I'm
[406]
gonna rest up and hopefully in a few
[408]
days go ahead and get started on my
[410]
lean-to that will go on this on this
[412]
slob so stay tuned and I will see you
[415]
soon
[419]
well how you doing dad everything's dead
[425]
it hurts to just push this oh yeah
